Nutrition Coach Certification: Options, Costs and Limits

A nutrition coach certification is a course certificate, usually from a fitness or nutrition education company such as Precision Nutrition, NASM, ISSA, ACE or AFPA, that teaches you to coach healthy adults on eating habits. It isn't a license. None of the popular ones makes you a dietitian, and several say so on their own pages. ISSA's, for example: "This certification does not make you a registered dietitian or licensed nutritionist."
That matters more for nutrition than almost any other coaching niche, because nutrition advice is regulated in many places and, as several of these providers warn their own students, titles like "dietitian" and "nutritionist" are protected in many states. So the useful questions are what each certification teaches, how it's assessed, what it costs, and what it lets you do. This guide answers those for the main options, checked on each provider's site in October 2026, and shows the board-credential route if you want one.
Once you're certified, Coachful's team will build your nutrition coaching website for free on every plan, so you can spend the first month coaching instead of designing.
Nutrition coach, health coach, dietitian: who's who
| Title | What it takes | What it lets you do |
|---|---|---|
| Certified nutrition coach | A course and exam from a training company; weeks to months | Habit-based coaching for generally healthy clients; no medical nutrition therapy |
| National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) | An NBHWC-approved program, 50 sessions, an associate degree or 4,000 hours of work experience, a board exam | Behavior-change coaching; NBHWC's scope says coaches don't create meal plans or give nutrition consultation on their own |
| Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) | A master's or doctorate in nutrition or a related field, 36 semester credits of coursework, 1,000 hours of supervised practice, a 200-question exam | The Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists says it's an avenue to a license to practice nutrition in many states |
| Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) | A graduate degree (required since January 1, 2024), accredited coursework and supervised practice, the registration exam | Medical nutrition therapy, including for diagnosed conditions |

The certifications in more detail
Precision Nutrition Level 1
The best-known nutrition coaching course, built around habit-based coaching, with a new chapter on coaching clients using GLP-1 medications for 2026. It's self-paced, with more than 70 hours of material and a short exam after each chapter, and a 45-day money-back guarantee. PN's FAQ is candid that Level 1 "isn't 'accredited' by the national education boards"; it carries continuing education approvals instead, including 15 NBHWC CEs. Watch for PN's broad statement that the only restricted scope is medical nutrition therapy; state laws on nutrition advice vary, so check yours. Prices differed between PN pages when we checked.
NASM Certified Nutrition Coach
Self-paced and fully online, with five years of access, a 100-question open-book exam in 90 minutes and three attempts. NASM tells coaches to recognize when to refer to a registered dietitian for medical nutrition therapy. It's priced monthly, so ask for the total before you buy.
ISSA Nutrition Coach
ISSA's current program is called Nutrition Coach rather than Nutritionist. It lists 200 hours of coursework and practice, six months to finish and an open-book exam at home. Its page is the clearest on scope: it doesn't make you a dietitian or licensed nutritionist, and "scope of practice varies by state."
ACE Fitness Nutrition Specialist
A continuing education program for fitness professionals rather than a stand-alone certification: you get a certificate that never expires and 2.5 ACE continuing education credits. It covers which kinds of consultation are "best left to registered dieticians and other medical professionals."
AFPA nutrition certifications
AFPA's Master Level Nutrition Coach bundles four self-paced courses: holistic nutrition, health and wellness coaching, gut health and coaching for weight loss. It teaches you to tell activities inside a nutrition coach's scope from those outside it, including around weight management medications. Its Holistic Nutrition Coach course alone is $899.

If you want a board credential: NBHWC programs with a nutrition focus
None of the nutrition certificates above leads to a national board credential on its own. If you want one, the closest fit for a nutrition-minded coach is the NBC-HWC, through an NBHWC-approved program. These appear on the NBHWC's approved list and describe their approval on their own sites:
- Precision Nutrition Level 2 Master Health Coaching: 20 weeks, then 50 logged coaching sessions.
- IIN's Coaching Intensive Practicum: a 12-week course taken after IIN's Health Coach Training Program, at $2,195 base tuition.
- Functional Medicine Coaching Academy: 6 or 12 months online, $9,999.
- Institute of Transformational Nutrition: its Certified Transformational Nutrition Coach, about four months, price not published.
The board exam itself costs $400 plus a $100 application fee. Our guide to health coach certification covers the requirements and compares more approved programs.
What your state may require
Rules on who may give nutrition advice, and who may use which title, are set state by state in the US, and they differ. We're not going to summarize 50 states' laws here, and you shouldn't rely on a course provider's summary either. Three practical rules:
- Don't call yourself a dietitian or nutritionist unless you hold the credential or license your state requires. The Institute of Transformational Nutrition, for one, tells its graduates both are protected titles in many states.
- Stay out of medical nutrition therapy. Diets for diagnosed conditions, such as diabetes or kidney disease, belong with a registered dietitian or the clinician treating the client.
- Check your state's rules before you sell individualized meal plans. ISSA's own page says scope of practice varies by state; take it at its word.
Our guide on whether you need a license to be a coach covers the general principles.

Red flags on nutrition certification pages
- Monthly pricing with no total. Multiply it out before you compare.
- "Approved by" a board when the page means continuing education credits.
- Scope statements broader than the law. A course can't widen what your state allows.
- Clinical-sounding specialist add-ons sold to coaches without a clinical license.
- Countdown sales that never seem to end. Several of the prices above were "limited time."
Questions to ask before you buy a nutrition course
- What's the total price once a monthly plan ends, and is the exam included or extra?
- How is the exam run? Open-book, at-home exams are common here. That's fine for learning, but it tells a client less than a proctored exam does.
- Is there any observed coaching? Most nutrition courses teach content and coaching ideas but don't watch you coach. If you want feedback on your coaching itself, look at an NBHWC-approved program, which must include observed practice sessions with live faculty feedback.
- How long do you keep access, and how often is the material updated? NASM, for example, gives five years of access; PN added a GLP-1 chapter for 2026.
- What does renewal cost? NASM's nutrition coach credential renews every two years with continuing education units; ACE's specialist certificate never expires.
- What does the course say about scope? A good one tells you plainly when to refer to a registered dietitian or a doctor.

Where Coachful fits after you certify
Coachful doesn't train or certify nutrition coaches. It's the platform the practice runs on. A Coachful membership includes booking with payment, programs, habits, check-ins and a client app on iPhone and Android, and the optional Fitness & Nutrition power-up adds:
- Nutrition targets, up to calories and macros, for clients you enable it for.
- Meal plans, recipes and food lookup, to use within the scope your training and state allow.
- Private progress photos and measurements.
- A workout builder and exercise library, if you also train clients.
Coachful isn't HIPAA-certified; it's GDPR-ready with full data export. The Coachful page for health coaches shows the full setup.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best nutrition coach certification?
It depends on your goal. Precision Nutrition Level 1 is built around habit-based nutrition coaching; NASM, ISSA and ACE suit fitness professionals adding nutrition; and if you want a national board credential, Precision Nutrition Level 2 is NBHWC-approved and leads to the NBC-HWC exam.
Is a nutrition coach certification worth it?
It's worth it for the skills and for clients' trust, as long as you know its limits. It isn't a license and doesn't let you provide medical nutrition therapy. If you want to treat conditions with diet, you need a dietitian or nutrition specialist route.
Can a certified nutrition coach make meal plans?
It depends on your state's rules and your training. The NBHWC's scope of practice says health coaches don't create meal plans on their own, and ISSA tells its graduates scope varies by state. Check before you sell individualized plans.
How much does nutrition coach certification cost?
Among the options we checked, published prices ran from $347.50 on sale for ACE's Fitness Nutrition Specialist to $1,899 for AFPA's Master Level Nutrition Coach, as listed in October 2026. NBHWC-approved programs cost more: Precision Nutrition Level 2 was $2,699 early bird or $4,788.
Is Precision Nutrition accredited?
Precision Nutrition says Level 1 "isn't 'accredited' by the national education boards," though it carries continuing education approvals. Precision Nutrition Level 2 is an NBHWC-approved training program.
What's the difference between a nutrition coach and a dietitian?
A registered dietitian holds a graduate degree, has completed accredited supervised practice and passed a registration exam, and can provide medical nutrition therapy. A nutrition coach has completed a course and coaches healthy clients on habits.
Will Coachful build my nutrition coaching website?
Yes. Coachful's team builds your website, first offer page and first program for free on every plan, usually within about 24 hours. Coachful itself is a paid membership with a free trial; the build costs nothing extra.
