What makes a coaching question powerful

Open, short, and one at a time. The best questions start with "what" or "how", fit in a breath, and stop. "Why" questions invite justification; stacked questions invite the client to answer the easiest one. Then silence: the useful part of a powerful question is the ten seconds after it.

The other test is direction. A powerful question moves the client toward something they had not seen: a value they had not named, an option they had dismissed, a fear underneath the reason. It is not clever. It is precise.

How to use a coaching question bank without sounding like one

Read the category before a session, not during. Pick the two questions that fit this client and this topic, write them at the top of your session plan, and then coach. If you go blank mid-session, "what else?" and "say more about that" cover most gaps.

Inside Coachful, coaches keep their favourite questions in program notes and in the pre-session AI briefing, so the right questions show up next to the client's goals and last check-in.

Questions coaches ask

What are the most powerful coaching questions?

The ones that make the client stop and think, not the ones that sound impressive. Reliable ones: "What do you really want?", "What is stopping you?", "What would you do if you knew you could not fail?", "What are you assuming?", "What will you do, by when?". This bank has 200 sorted by session moment.

What questions should a life coach ask in the first session?

Start with "what would make this hour worth your time?" and "what do you want to leave with?", then move to goals: "what does done look like?" and "why now?". The opening and goals categories here cover the first session end to end.

What are good coaching questions for goal setting?

Questions that make the goal specific and owned: "How will you know you have achieved it?", "What will be different on a normal Tuesday?", "What is the number that would make this real?", "Which part of this goal is yours?". See the goals and vision category, and pair it with the SMART goal worksheet.

Are these coaching questions free to use with clients?

Yes, use them however you like. There is no signup. Favourites are stored only on your device.

How many coaching questions are in the bank?

Two hundred across eight categories, 25 each. They are written to be short enough to say in one breath and open enough to work across life, career, health, executive and business coaching.
