Do Group Coaching Sessions Count Toward ICF Hours? The 15-Person Rule
Do group coaching sessions count toward ICF hours? Yes, with two conditions that trip up more coaches than any other rule in the credentialing process. The group has to be 15 people or fewer, and the time counts once. A 90-minute session with ten people is 1.5 hours in your log, not 15. Coaches who multiply by participants are the ones who get an awkward email from the ICF after they apply.

The 15-person rule
The ICF's experience requirements page puts it in one sentence: "Only groups of 15 or fewer will count, unless a co-coach is present. If a co-coach is present, then the coaching time will be split between the coaches."
So there are three cases.
- Fifteen or fewer, one coach. The full session time counts for you.
- Any size, two coaches. The session time is split between you. A two-hour session co-coached is one hour each, whatever the group size.
- More than fifteen, one coach. Does not count.
The co-coach clause is the one people miss. It is not a bonus that lets a large group count in full; it is a split. Two coaches running a 20-person cohort for 90 minutes each log 45 minutes.
Time counts once, not per person
The single most expensive misunderstanding in ICF logs. An hour of coaching is an hour of your time, however many people were in the room. The ICF's requirement is a count of your coaching experience, not of client-hours delivered. Ten people for an hour is one hour. The same session, logged as ten, is a false claim, and it is the kind of thing an audit finds because the arithmetic does not survive contact with a calendar.
What the ICF means by group coaching
The candidate guide's glossary defines it as "coaching a group of individuals who have similar goals or interests, serving each to move forward in their progress, where the coach and other group members offer support and inspiration on individual abilities and potential."
That definition matters at the edges. A cohort programme where you coach members through their individual goals is group coaching. A mastermind where you facilitate and the members coach each other is group coaching. A workshop where you present a framework to a room and take questions is closer to teaching, and the more of the session you spend presenting, the weaker the claim that it was coaching. If a session was mostly you talking, be honest about it in the log or leave it out.
How clients are counted for a group
The credential minimums include a client count as well as an hour count: 8 clients for the ACC, 25 for the PCC, 35 for the MCC. Each member of a group you coach is a client you coached, so a cohort of nine adds nine to your distinct client count, provided you can name them. The ICF's own log template asks whether each entry was individual or group and expects client names and contact details either way.
That last point is the constraint. In an audit the ICF asks you to produce client contact details so the hours can be verified. For a group, that means the members, or for a programme run through an organisation, an authorised person at the organisation who can confirm the hours. A group whose members you could not contact is a group whose hours you may not be able to defend.
How to log a group session
- One row per group, or per programme cohort. Name it so you know what it was: "Cohort 4, nine people, spring 2026."
- Session time once. Ninety minutes is 1.5 hours in the hours column.
- Paid or pro bono, in the correct column. A paid programme is paid hours.
- Contact. The organisation's sponsor if there is one; otherwise keep a member list with consent to store it, somewhere you can find it.
- Co-coach. If there was one, halve the time and note their name.

The panel does not know whether the programme was paid or whether a co-coach was present, so those two facts go in the log. Three group situations, worked through
A six-week programme, ten members, one 90-minute call a week, paid. Six calls at 1.5 hours is 9 paid hours and 10 distinct clients. Good for both bars.
A mastermind of six, two-hour monthly sessions, co-coached, members pay. Each session is 2 hours split two ways: 1 paid hour for you per session, 12 over a year, 6 clients.
A free 20-person workshop, solo. Over 15, no co-coach: it does not count. Run it with a co-coach and it counts, split. Cap it at 15 and it counts in full as pro bono.
