Nurse Coach Salary in 2026: RN Pay vs Coaching Income

Nurse Coach Salary in 2026: RN Pay vs Coaching Income

No source publishes a nurse coach salary on its own. A nurse coach is a registered nurse first, so the closest benchmark is the RN figure: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $97,550 a year for registered nurses in May 2025, or $46.90 an hour. That's an adjacent occupation, not coaching pay. A nurse coach who goes independent prices like other health coaches, and Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report puts health and wellness coaching at $75 to $200 a session and $300 to $700 a month for ongoing coaching.

So the real question for most nurses isn't "what does a nurse coach earn" but "what would I need to charge, and how many clients would I need, to replace or add to an RN salary." This guide works through both versions of the job, employed and self-employed, with the arithmetic for each.

If you start a private practice, one thing you can hand off: Coachful's team builds your nurse coaching website and first program page for free on every plan.

Notice the gap. The health coaching salary band sits below the RN median, which tells you something important: a nurse who becomes a coach isn't moving into a higher-paid job by default. The coaching skills add value to nursing work, and a nurse's clinical background can support a higher coaching price, but the market price of coaching itself is lower than the market price of nursing.

Employed nurse coaches are paid as nurses

Plenty of nursing work already uses coaching skills: patient education, care coordination, chronic condition programs, employee health. When an employer pays you as a registered nurse to coach, the RN pay scale is your benchmark, and the BLS breaks it down by setting.

Work setting (registered nurses, adjacent occupation)Median pay, May 2025
Government, excluding education and hospitals$110,780
Hospitals (state, local and private)$100,220
Ambulatory healthcare services$91,230
Nursing and residential care facilities$84,300
Educational services$78,620

BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, registered nurses. About 3,465,400 jobs in 2025, with 6 percent projected growth from 2025 to 2035.

The BLS also states plainly that registered nurses must be licensed, by the state they work in. That license is what makes the role a nursing role, and it's why employers can pay RN rates for coaching-heavy work. We couldn't find a published figure for RN roles with "coach" in the title, so we haven't quoted one. Ask the employer how the role is classified before you compare offers.

Self-employed nurse coaches: what it takes to replace an RN salary

For a nurse leaving a staff job to coach privately, the target is usually the salary they're giving up. Here's how many monthly coaching clients, kept all year, it takes to reach the RN median at three prices inside the report's range.

Yearly revenueClients at $300 a monthClients at $450 a monthClients at $700 a month
$68,940 (RN lowest 10 percent threshold)20139
$97,550 (RN median)281912
$137,470 (RN highest 10 percent threshold)392617

Our arithmetic: target divided by twelve monthly fees, rounded up, revenue before costs and tax. Prices from the $300 to $700 monthly range in Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report.

Then add what the salary came with. An RN job may include employer health insurance, retirement contributions, paid leave and the employer's half of Social Security and Medicare. A self-employed coach pays the IRS's full 15.3% self-employment tax on net earnings and buys everything else. Replacing $97,550 of salary takes meaningfully more than $97,550 of revenue.

The capacity check: the ICF Global Coaching Study 2025, as compiled in the report, puts the average coach practitioner at 12.4 clients. Twelve clients at $700 a month is a realistic full-time practice for a specialist. Twenty-eight at $300 is a lot of people to coach well, which is the case for pricing near the top of the range and picking a narrow focus.

The hourly comparison, done properly

$150 a session looks like three times the RN median hourly wage of $46.90. It isn't, once you count the unpaid hours. If each paid session needs another 45 minutes of preparation, notes, messages and marketing, a $150 session pays about $86 an hour. At $100 a session, it's about $57. Still above the RN median, but the gap is narrower than the headline price suggests, and it only holds if the calendar is full.

The hybrid route most nurses can test first

You don't have to choose on day one. A nurse who keeps a part-time or per-diem nursing role and coaches privately on set days gets a floor of RN income and a ceiling set by the practice. As an illustration: six private clients at $450 a month adds $32,400 a year in revenue, before costs and tax, for perhaps a day or a day and a half of coaching a week.

The hybrid also solves the hardest part of starting, which is the first year. Across all of coaching, the report puts first-year coaches at $20,000 to $30,000 (PayScale and practitioner reports). Building to a full practice while you still have a nursing paycheck is less romantic than quitting, and much more likely to work. If you want to work backwards from the income you need, how to set a coaching revenue target walks through the steps.

What lets a nurse coach charge more

  • Clinical credibility in a specific area. A nurse who spent years in cardiac rehab, diabetes education or oncology can coach people living with those conditions on habits and self-management, and clients can see why that background matters. Keep it coaching: your state's rules on nursing practice still apply when you use the title "nurse."
  • A specialty with less competition. The report flags women's health as underserved and growing, with low saturation. Perimenopause, fertility and postpartum recovery are examples of focused areas a nursing background suits.
  • Board certification. The American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation offers the Nurse Coach Board Certified (NC-BC) credential, which requires an unrestricted US RN license, nursing practice experience, 60 contact hours of nurse coaching education and 60 hours of supervised coaching. The 2026 report doesn't measure what it adds to pay. Our guide on how to become a nurse coach covers the requirements.
  • Programs instead of sessions. A three-month program at $900 to $2,000, the report's range for health coaching, sells an outcome rather than an hour. Our breakdown of what health coaches charge has the package shapes, and health coach certification covers the NBHWC route, which is also open to nurses.
  • Employer and clinic contracts. Workplace health programs pay from a budget. Across coaching, the report puts organization-level retainers at $3,000 to $10,000 a month.

Costs a nurse coach carries that a staff RN doesn't

  • Insurance. An employer's malpractice cover typically applies to the work you do for that employer, not to a private practice. Ask an insurer about a policy that fits both your nursing license and your coaching work.
  • License and certification renewals. Keep your RN license current if you use the title, plus any coaching credential.
  • Tax and benefits. The full 15.3 percent self-employment tax, plus your own health insurance and retirement savings.
  • Privacy obligations. If you'll coach under a clinic's license or receive patient records, check what that clinic requires of your tools before you choose them.
  • Software, payment processing and the unpaid hours of marketing and admin.

Running a nurse coaching practice on Coachful

A Coachful membership includes what an independent health coaching practice runs on:

  • Programs with weekly goals, daily habits with reminders and morning, evening or weekly check-ins, in a client app on iPhone and Android.
  • Intake forms and coaching agreements for e-signature before the first session, so your scope as a coach is written down and signed.
  • Coaching flows and journeys for onboarding and between-session support.
  • Payments to your own Stripe or Razorpay account with a 0% Coachful platform fee, as monthly subscriptions, payment plans or one-time programs.

An important limit for nurses: Coachful is not HIPAA-certified. It is GDPR-ready with full data export. If you'll handle protected health information or coach under a healthcare provider's license, confirm what's required before you choose any tool. The Coachful page for health coaches shows the setup.

Frequently asked questions

How much do nurse coaches make?

No source measures nurse coaches separately. Employed nurse coaches are usually paid as registered nurses, whose BLS median was $97,550 in May 2025. Self-employed nurse coaches earn clients times price, using health coaching rates of $75 to $200 a session or $300 to $700 a month, before costs and tax.

Do nurse coaches make more than regular nurses?

Not automatically. The market price of health coaching, $52,000 to $77,000 a year in the 2026 report's salary data, sits below the RN median. A nurse coach earns more than staff nursing pay only with a full practice at the upper end of coaching prices, or a mix of nursing work and private clients.

How many clients does a nurse coach need to replace an RN salary?

To reach $97,550 of revenue, about 12 clients at $700 a month, 19 at $450 or 28 at $300, kept all year. Replacing the salary fully takes more, because a self-employed coach pays the full 15.3 percent self-employment tax and buys their own benefits.

Can I be a nurse coach part time?

Yes, and it's often the safer start. Keeping a part-time or per-diem nursing role while you build a coaching practice gives you RN income as a floor. Six private clients at $450 a month adds about $32,400 a year in revenue.

Does NC-BC certification increase a nurse coach's salary?

No published data measures it. The NC-BC from the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation is a board certification for RNs, and it can help with employers and clinics that want a recognized credential, but its effect on pay hasn't been studied in the sources we use.

Is Coachful HIPAA compliant for nurse coaches?

No. Coachful is not HIPAA-certified; it is GDPR-ready with full data export. If your coaching involves protected health information or happens under a clinic's license, check the requirements before you use any coaching platform.

Will Coachful build my nurse coaching website for free?

Yes. Coachful's team builds nurse coaching websites, program pages and first offers for free on every plan, inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. Coachful is a paid membership; the build costs nothing extra.
