Nutrition Coach Salary: What Nutrition Coaches Earn in 2026

There is no published nutrition coach salary figure. The closest data is for health and wellness coaches, who earn $52,000 to $77,000 a year according to PayScale, ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor data compiled in Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report, and charge $75 to $200 a session. The figure you'll often see quoted beside it, $76,400, is the May 2025 median for dietitians and nutritionists from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics: a licensed occupation next door, not a coach salary.
The gap between those two jobs explains most of what a nutrition coach can earn. A dietitian can bill for medical nutrition therapy; a coach sells habits, accountability and support with eating, and in some states may not sell individualized meal plans at all. Below: the numbers with their sources, what your certification costs to earn back, three ways nutrition coaches actually get paid, and the arithmetic for your own income.
And when you're ready to sell, Coachful's team will build your nutrition coaching website and program page for free on every plan, so the first money you make isn't spent on a web designer.
Why there's no clean nutrition coach salary number
"Nutrition coach" isn't a job title any government agency counts. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook covers dietitians and nutritionists, health education specialists and fitness trainers, but not nutrition coaches. Coachful's rates data, which compiles the ICF Global Coaching Study 2025 and the salary aggregators, has a figure for health and wellness coaching as a whole and none for nutrition on its own.
So any single "average nutrition coach salary" you find online is one of three things: a health coach figure relabeled, a dietitian figure borrowed, or job postings for roles that mix coaching with sales or fitness. None is wrong to look at. Each answers a different question, so label them before you plan around them.
| Figure | Amount | Source | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health and wellness coach, yearly | $52,000 to $77,000 | PayScale, ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor | The closest coaching figure; leans toward employed roles |
| Health and wellness coach, per session | $75 to $200 | PayScale and practitioner reports | A session price, not hourly pay |
| Dietitians and nutritionists (adjacent occupation) | $76,400 median, May 2025 | BLS | A licensed occupation, mostly employed; not a coach salary |
| Fitness trainers and instructors (adjacent occupation) | $47,160 median, May 2025 | BLS | The other neighbor many nutrition coaches come from |

Nutrition coach vs dietitian pay: the license is the difference
The BLS page for dietitians and nutritionists puts the median at $76,400 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent earning less than $49,090 and the highest 10 percent more than $103,720. There were about 86,300 jobs in 2025, and the BLS projects 8 percent growth from 2025 to 2035. Pay by work setting runs from $75,670 in nursing and residential care to $80,790 in outpatient care centers.
Those are wages for licensed clinical work. The same page says many states require dietitians and nutritionists to be licensed to practice, other states require only registration or certification to use certain titles, and a few have no regulations for the occupation. It tells readers to check with their state board. That patchwork is why two nutrition coaches in different states can legally sell different things.
Should you become a dietitian instead?
If the clinical salary is the goal, the coaching route won't get you there. The Commission on Dietetic Registration now requires a graduate degree to become eligible for the registered dietitian nutritionist exam, a rule that took effect on January 1, 2024, plus coursework and supervised practice through programs accredited by ACEND. That's years of study. A nutrition coach certificate takes weeks to months and leads to a different job: coaching healthy adults on eating habits, often alongside a dietitian rather than instead of one.
Many good nutrition coaches pick the coaching route on purpose, because they want to work on behavior rather than diagnosis. Just don't price yourself against the dietitian median, and don't call yourself a nutritionist unless your state allows it. Our guide on how to become a nutrition coach walks through where the line sits.
Earning back what your certification costs
Most nutrition coaches pay for a course before they earn anything, so the first income question is how long it takes to recover it. Prices below are as listed on each provider's site in October 2026, from our comparison of nutrition coach certifications; several were on sale.
| Course | Price as listed | Sessions at $75 to repay it | Three-month programs at $900 to repay it |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISSA Nutrition Coach | $629 | 9 | 1 |
| Precision Nutrition Level 1 | $799 list ($599 on sale) | 11 | 1 |
| AFPA Master Level Nutrition Coach | $1,899 | 26 | 3 |
| Precision Nutrition Level 2 (NBHWC-approved) | $4,788 general | 64 | 6 |
Our arithmetic: list price divided by $75 (the bottom of the health and wellness session band) or $900 (the bottom of the report's three-month program range), rounded up. Revenue before tax and other costs.
Tuition is rarely the cost that sinks a new practice. The slow part is finding the first ten paying clients, which is why the payback column in programs looks so much kinder than the one in single sessions. Sell a program early, even a small one.

Three ways nutrition coaches get paid
Nutrition coaching happens mostly between sessions: the weekly shop, the Thursday slump, the photo of dinner. That shapes the pricing models that work. The report observes these price ranges for health and wellness coaching and across coaching generally:
- One-to-one monthly coaching: two to four sessions a month plus messaging, $300 to $700 a month.
- Group programs: cohort-based programs at $500 to $3,000 per person, for 8 to 20 participants.
- Memberships or communities: $47 to $197 a month, usually a group call, resources and a community.
Here's what each one earns at a modest price inside those ranges. These are worked examples, not measured incomes.
| Model | Clients times rate | Yearly revenue | Where the work goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-to-one monthly | 10 clients × $400 × 12 months | $48,000 | Weekly calls, food log reviews, messages |
| Group program | 12 people × $500 × 3 cohorts a year | $18,000 | Six to eight group calls per cohort, a shared feed |
| Membership | 40 members × $47 × 12 months | $22,560 | One monthly call, recipes, a community |
| Mixed practice | 8 monthly clients at $400, 2 cohorts of 12 at $500, 30 members at $47 | $67,320 | About the workload of a full one-to-one practice |
The mixed practice lands inside the health and wellness salary band, short of the dietitian median, on eight one-to-one clients. It also has a property the others don't: no single cancellation hurts much. If you're deciding how to split your offers, how to structure three coaching packages covers the tier logic, and our breakdown of what health coaches charge has the program and monthly prices in more depth.

What your scope of practice does to your income
Scope isn't only a legal question for a nutrition coach. It decides what's on your price list.
- What you can sell almost anywhere: habit change, meal-planning skills taught as a process, grocery and cooking routines, accountability, and support around a plan the client's dietitian or doctor set.
- What depends on your state: individualized meal plans and nutrition advice for a specific person. Check your state's rules before you put either on a sales page.
- What belongs with a licensed professional: diets for diagnosed conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease, and anything that looks like treatment.
That last line can bring in work as well as send it out. A referral relationship with a local dietitian runs both ways, since their clients may want support on the habits side between appointments. The NBHWC's scope of practice for health coaches describes the coach as an "accountability partner, not director", which is a useful line for a nutrition coach to put in their agreement as well.

Taking the costs out
A self-employed nutrition coach has no employer paying half the payroll taxes, no paid leave and no free software. Before you compare your revenue with the BLS median, subtract the IRS's 15.3 percent self-employment tax on net earnings plus income tax, liability insurance, continuing education, payment processing and the tools you run the practice on. Our guide to the financial setup after your first payment covers accounts and tax, and how to set a coaching revenue target works backwards from take-home pay.
A nutrition coaching practice on Coachful
A Coachful membership includes what the three income models above need in one account:
- The Fitness & Nutrition power-up: nutrition targets up to calories and macros, meal plans, recipes, food lookup and private progress photos and measurements, for coaches whose training and state rules cover them. More on the Fitness & Nutrition page.
- Programs with weekly goals, daily habits with reminders and morning, evening or weekly check-ins, in a client app on iPhone and Android.
- Group programs that create a cohort group with a feed, group chat and group calls when clients enroll.
- Bundles and subscriptions for memberships, sold through your own Stripe or Razorpay account with a 0% Coachful platform fee.
Two honest limits: Coachful isn't HIPAA-certified (it is GDPR-ready with full data export), and it doesn't sync with wearables or Apple Health. See the Coachful page for health coaches, or compare options in our roundup of software for nutrition coaches.

Get your nutrition coaching site built for free

Click Fill in a form on the "Want us to build it for you?" card on the Website page, or choose We'll build it for you · FREE under Create. Tell the team which pages you need, what visitors should do next, and attach up to 10 files and 8 links: your logo, photos, a free recipe guide, the program outline.

The team replies by email with next steps, usually within about 24 hours, which is typical rather than guaranteed. A psychologist-turned-coach working on emotional eating recently got a new homepage with three clear paths (book a call, join the free community, enroll in the program) and a free-community funnel that delivers a guide. Nothing gets invented: no credentials you don't hold, which matters doubly in nutrition, and no testimonials or prices you haven't given. Frequently asked questions
How much does a nutrition coach make a year?
No source measures nutrition coaches on their own. The closest figure is health and wellness coaching at $52,000 to $77,000 a year, from PayScale, ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor data in Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report. A self-employed coach can earn well below or above that depending on price, client count and model.
How much do nutrition coaches charge per session?
Using the health and wellness data, most charge $75 to $200 a session, with practitioner estimates of $50 to $100 for newer coaches and $200 to $400 at the top. Most nutrition coaches sell monthly coaching or programs rather than single sessions; monthly coaching typically runs $300 to $700.
Do nutrition coaches make as much as dietitians?
Usually not. The BLS median for dietitians and nutritionists was $76,400 in May 2025, for licensed clinical work. Nutrition coaches can't bill for medical nutrition therapy, so their income depends on how many clients they keep at coaching prices.
Is a nutrition coach certification worth it financially?
It can pay for itself quickly. At the bottom of the price ranges, a $799 course is repaid by about 11 single sessions at $75 or one three-month program at $900, before tax. The harder part is getting the first clients, not the tuition.
Can a nutrition coach make $100,000?
Some do, usually with a narrow audience, programs or monthly coaching instead of single sessions, and a group offer. At $700 a month, $100,000 of revenue takes 12 clients all year. At $400 it takes 21, before costs and tax.
Can a nutrition coach write meal plans?
It depends on your state. The BLS notes that many states license dietitians and nutritionists, some regulate only titles, and a few have no rules. Check your state board before you sell individualized meal plans, and refer diets for medical conditions to a dietitian.
Will Coachful build my nutrition coaching website for free?
Yes. Coachful's team builds nutrition coaching websites, program pages and first offers for free on every plan, inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. Coachful is a paid membership; the build costs nothing extra.
