Best App for Online Courses: 10 Options Ranked

The best app for online courses is the one your students actually open on a Tuesday night, not the one with the longest feature list. If you sell a course as part of a coaching offer, the deciding question is simple: does the app give students their next lesson, a small daily action, a place to talk with the group and a reason to come back tomorrow, all under your name? Most course apps handle the lesson. Far fewer handle everything that happens between lessons.
Our pick is Coachful's client app. We make Coachful, so weigh that, but the reasoning is specific: students get courses with drip and completion tracking, habits, morning and evening check-ins, goals with progress bars, a community feed, group chat and direct messages in one app on iPhone and Android, with your branding inside the Coachful app. The coach runs all of it, plus booking, payments and contracts, from one login. Below you will find a five-question checklist, a table that maps your answers to a pick, ten ranked apps, costs at 5, 15 and 40 clients, and the red flags that make switching painful later.
What do students actually do in a course app each week?
Students use a course app for short, repeated visits: open the next lesson, finish a small task, check in, read what the group is saying and see whether they are on track. Long study sessions mostly happen on a laptop; the phone is for the five-minute moments in between.
That pattern matters because of how people learn and forget. The spacing effect describes how material reviewed across several sessions sticks better than material crammed in one, and the forgetting curve describes how quickly new information fades without review. A course app that only stores videos does nothing about either. One that nudges students back for a small action every day works with both.
Here is what a typical student of a coach-led course does across a week:
- Opens one or two lessons. Usually short videos or written lessons released on a schedule, not the whole course at once.
- Does a daily action. A habit to tick off, a journaling prompt or a quick check-in about energy, mood or progress.
- Talks to the group. Posts a win, asks a question under the coach's latest post, replies in a cohort chat.
- Messages the coach. A quick private question that does not need a call.
- Joins or books something live. A group call, a Q&A, or a 1:1 session if the offer includes one.
- Checks progress. How many lessons are done, how the streak looks, how close the goal is.
If your course is a self-paced video library with no coaching, a pure course app covers most of this list. If your course is part of a program where you want people to change behaviour, you need the daily action, the group and the progress view in the same place as the lessons. That split drives every recommendation below. For the broader view of platforms that mix courses with coaching, see our comparison of platforms that combine courses and 1:1 coaching.

Which five questions should you answer before choosing a course app?
Answer these five about your own practice. Each answer narrows the list quickly, and together they point at one or two apps.
- Is the course the product, or part of a coaching program? A standalone course library needs strong lesson delivery. A course inside a program needs habits, check-ins, goals and 1:1 contact alongside the lessons.
- Do students need a daily action between lessons? If yes, look for habits, check-ins and streaks inside the student app, not in a separate tool.
- How much does the group matter? Some courses live or die by the community: cohort chat, a feed, live events. Others barely use it.
- How branded must the app feel? Options range from the vendor's own app with your content inside, to your branding inside a shared app, to your own App Store listing, which usually costs extra or needs a custom plan.
- Do you also sell 1:1 sessions, contracts or payment plans? If yes, check whether the back office that books and bills those clients is the same system that feeds the student app, or whether you will be stitching two tools together.
Which app fits your answers?
Use this table as a shortcut. Find the row that sounds most like your practice, then read that app's section below.
| Start with | If your answers look like this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Coachful | Course inside a coaching program, daily actions matter, the group matters, 1:1 sessions too | Lessons, habits, check-ins, goals, community, messages and booking in one client app, run from one coach login |
| Kajabi | Large catalogue of courses and digital products, branding matters, budget is generous | Branded app on Growth and Pro plans per its September 2026 profile; strong product and email tools |
| Circle or Mighty Networks | Community is the product; courses sit inside it | Community-first apps with courses, events and live streams |
| Teachable | Self-paced course library, low budget, no daily coaching | Student apps on every plan at a low entry price |
| Practice Better | Wellness or nutrition practice with protocols and journaling | Client portal on web, iOS and Android built for practitioners |
| CoachAccountable | Accountability-heavy coaching, mostly 1:1, phone app not essential | Deep action plans and metrics, but no native mobile app |
| Thinkific | Course-first educator who wants live cohorts and a paid branded app later | Solid course authoring; own-brand app is a paid add-on |
| Skool | Simple paid community with a classroom, gamified | Inexpensive entry, one app for feed, classroom and calendar |
| ABC Trainerize | Your course is a workout program | Fitness client app with workouts, habits and nutrition |
How did we rank these 10 course apps?
We ranked by the student's experience on their phone, then by what it takes the coach to run it. We did not test these apps hands-on; the comparisons below rest on what each vendor documents and what public reviewers report, with vendor prices as listed in October 2026 unless we say otherwise.
The client-experience criteria: lesson and program access, daily habits and check-ins, community, messaging, reminders, progress tracking, how branded the app feels, and iPhone and Android availability. The coach-side criteria: whether the back office connects to the app with one login, how much of the stack it replaces, total monthly cost, and setup effort.
Ranking criteria in one line: one login for the whole client journey, delivery between sessions, total stack cost, and setup effort (including whether someone builds it for you).
| App | Rank | Best for | Native student app | Starting price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coachful | 1 | Courses delivered inside coaching programs | iPhone and Android, coach's branding inside the Coachful app | Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients |
| Kajabi | 2 | Knowledge businesses with many products | Yes, on Growth and Pro (September 2026 profile) | $179/mo ($143/mo annual) |
| Circle | 3 | Community-led courses | Circle-branded app on all plans (September 2026 profile) | $89/mo billed annually |
| Mighty Networks | 4 | Communities with courses and livestreams | Mighty-branded member apps | $95/mo ($79/mo annual) |
| Teachable | 5 | Low-cost self-paced courses | iOS and Android student apps on all plans | $39/mo ($29/mo annual) |
| Practice Better | 6 | Wellness and nutrition practices | Web, iOS and Android portal (September 2026 profile) | $0 (3 clients) |
| CoachAccountable | 7 | Accountability-heavy 1:1 coaching | No native app (older profile) | $20/mo (2 active clients) |
| Thinkific | 8 | Course-first educators | Thinkific-branded app on Start and above (September 2026 profile); own-brand app $199/mo add-on | $109/mo ($82/mo annual) |
| Skool | 9 | Simple paid communities | Skool app on iOS and Android, not white-label (September 2026 profile) | $9/mo plus 10% + 30¢ per sale |
| ABC Trainerize | 10 | Fitness programs | Client app on iOS and Android | $0 (1 client) |
Several of these tools have no native student app at all. CoachAccountable is the one in this top ten; Paperbell and Satori, which we left out, also run in the mobile browser only according to their older profiles. A browser portal can work, but students cannot add it to their routine the way they do an installed app.
1. Coachful: why is it the best app for online courses inside coaching programs?
Coachful puts the course, the daily practice and the group in one client app, and connects it to the coach's booking, payments and client records behind a single login. For a coach whose course is part of a program, that removes the gap where students usually drift away: between the lesson and the next session.

What the student sees on their phone
Students install the Coachful app on iPhone or Android and find your brand inside it: your programs, your courses, your community. Courses are built from modules and lessons, with drip release and completion tracking, so students see the next lesson rather than the whole library at once. Next to the courses sit downloads, videos, books, AI tools and events, all delivered into the client's branded home and app.

The coaching hub shows the next session, the program they are enrolled in, sessions, progress and documents. Programs run over multiple weeks with weekly goals, daily tasks and habits, so a lesson can be paired with an action for that day.

Between lessons: habits, check-ins and streaks
This is where Coachful separates from pure course apps. Students tick off habits, answer morning and evening check-ins, and watch goals fill a progress bar while streaks build. On the coach side, each client record collects those check-ins, habits, goals and notes, and labels each client as thriving, active, quiet or at risk. A student who stops opening lessons shows up as quiet before they ask for a refund.

Here is a short walkthrough of how check-ins are set up and what clients answer:
The group: feed, cohort chat and live events
Every student has a community feed, group chat and direct messages, plus video events for live Q&As. When someone enrols in a program, Coachful creates the cohort group automatically, so a new intake lands in a room with their peers without the coach building it by hand. Group calls and webinars run from the same place. Selected clients can also chat with an AI Coach, an AI version of the coach that the coach configures, between sessions.

Reminders and live sessions
Booking pages handle availability rules, buffers, minimum notice and time-zone detection, with two-way Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook calendar sync. Sessions get built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links. Students receive email reminders, plus SMS 24 hours before and WhatsApp one hour before once messaging is enabled. Session credits and paid sessions let you sell a course with a few calls attached.
What the coach runs behind the app
The course builder sits next to more than 40 ready-to-film program templates and 48 course templates with quizzes. Payments go through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account, with one-time payments, subscriptions, payment plans, order bumps, coupons, Apple Pay and Google Pay; Coachful takes no platform fee on top of Stripe or Razorpay processing (since August 2026). Coaching agreements are signed before the first call and stored on the client record. A section-based website builder, funnels and email sequences cover selling the course, and Michelle, the built-in AI assistant, can build programs, draft emails and summarize recorded sessions. Questions and planning with Michelle are included in your Coachful membership; confirmed builds and changes use AI credits.

If you want the coach-side detail, our page on the online course platform for coaches covers the builder, and group coaching software covers cohorts and calls.
Where it falls short
Be clear on the limits. The client app ships under the Coachful listing with your branding inside it; it is not your own App Store account. Coachful is not a course marketplace, so it will not bring you buyers. It does not sync with Garmin, Fitbit, Whoop or Oura, and it is not HIPAA-certified, so clinical records belong elsewhere. There is no PayPal and no permanent free plan, and there are no third-party plugins.
Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, a coach can ask the Coachful team to build a course outline and written material, a program, a website, a funnel, an email sequence and more, attaching up to 8 reference links and 10 files. The team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours, and leaves gaps for you rather than inventing credentials, testimonials or prices. Recording your videos is not part of it. For example, a real-estate and money coach had a year-long cohort program built with an application form, an eight-page site and a free nine-day bootcamp funnel. Read more about the free white-glove service.

Coachful in short. Coachful is a coaching platform where one subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, programs with habits and check-ins, courses, community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant. It is built for coaches who deliver programs rather than single sessions, including solo coaches growing into a small team and coaches replacing four to six tools. It is not a course marketplace, not HIPAA-certified, and does not give you your own App Store listing. To start, take a free trial and request the free white-glove build; clients, programs and content are imported for you during onboarding. Current plans: Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients.
2. Kajabi: is it worth the price for a branded course app?
Kajabi suits course creators with many digital products who want a polished branded app and can afford a higher plan. According to its September 2026 profile, the customer app and the branded app come on the Growth and Pro plans, not Basic.

As listed in October 2026, Basic costs $179/month ($143/month annual) with 5 products and 2,500 contacts; Growth is $249/month ($199/month annual) with 50 products and 25,000 contacts; Pro is $499/month ($399/month annual). Inside the app, students reach their courses, community and coaching products. Kajabi is strong at selling: websites, funnels and email are built in.
The gap for coaches is the daily layer. Kajabi has no habit tracking or daily client check-ins; coaching is organised as products and communities, not per-client plans. Payment costs also deserve a look: Kajabi Payments in the US runs 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic down to 2.7% + $0.30 on Pro, and using another processor (other than PayPal) adds a Kajabi fee of 0.5% to 2%. Trustpilot showed 3.4 from 2,347 reviews when seen in October 2026. Our guide to delivering online courses walks through the course-delivery setup on any platform.
Pick it over Coachful if you sell a large catalogue of standalone courses and digital products to a big email list, want your own branded app experience, and do not need daily habits or check-ins.
3. Circle: does a community-first app work for courses?
Yes, when the community is the main event. Circle gives members a Circle-branded app on iOS and Android on all plans, per its September 2026 profile, with courses, events, live streams and paid memberships sitting inside spaces.

Professional is listed at $89/month billed annually, Business at $199/month billed annually and Scale at $419/month billed annually; monthly prices were not shown in our October 2026 data. A white-label app needs the custom-priced Circle Plus. Circle also takes a fee on payments: 2% on Professional, 1% on Business and Scale, 0.5% on Circle Plus, on top of Stripe processing. A 14-day trial with no card is available on the three main plans.
Students get a lively feed and course spaces, but Circle has no 1:1 scheduling or client back office, and no per-client habits, check-ins or coaching plans. If you coach individuals, you will run that part in another tool. Trustpilot showed 4.1 from 129 reviews in October 2026.
Pick it over Coachful if your course is really a membership community with hundreds of active members, and individual coaching plans are not part of the offer.
4. Mighty Networks: what do members get in the app?
Members get Mighty-branded apps with community, courses and events together, and livestreaming included on every plan with listed limits. Your own branded apps require Mighty Pro, which is custom-priced; third parties cite figures around $17K or more per year, according to its September 2026 profile.

Launch is $95/month ($79/month annual) with 3 hosts and 20 hours of livestreaming a month for up to 100 attendees. Scale is $215/month ($179/month annual) with 30 hours and 200 attendees. Mighty takes a platform fee on sales of 2% on Launch, 1% on Scale and 0.5% on Growth and Mighty Pro, plus Stripe processing. There is a 14-day trial with no card.
The student experience is social first: a feed, course content and live sessions in one app. Like Circle, it lacks 1:1 scheduling, invoicing and contracts, and has no per-client habits, check-ins or private coaching plans. Trustpilot showed 3.3 from 219 reviews in October 2026.
Pick it over Coachful if you run a large network where livestreams and member-to-member connection matter more than individual progress, and you are willing to pay the platform fee on sales.
5. Teachable: the cheapest way to put a course on a phone?
For a plain self-paced course, close to it. Teachable's pricing page lists iOS and Android student apps on every plan, starting at $39/month ($29/month annual) on Starter, when we checked it for this article.
The plan details matter. Starter allows 5 products and charges a 7.5% transaction fee. Builder at $89/month ($69/month annual) gives 10 products with 0% transaction fee. Growth at $189/month ($139/month annual) gives 50 products and removes Teachable branding. Its September 2026 profile notes active-student caps (100 on Starter, 1,000 on Builder) and no white-label app, and lists Teachable Communities on all plans. There is a 7-day trial and a 30-day guarantee on new plans.
The student app is built for watching lessons. We found no habits, daily check-ins or goal tracking in Teachable's plan list, so coaching between lessons happens somewhere else. For the selling side, our playbook on selling online courses applies regardless of platform.
Pick it over Coachful if you sell one or two self-paced courses with no coaching attached and want the lowest possible entry price.
6. Practice Better: a practitioner portal that doubles as a course app
Practice Better is a practice-management tool for wellness and nutrition practitioners, and its client portal runs on web, iOS and Android. Per its September 2026 profile, clients use it for booking, messaging, forms, programs, protocols, documents and invoices, plus journaling with barcode and photo entries.

Pricing as listed in October 2026: Sprout is $0 for 3 clients; Starter $35/month ($25/month annual) for 10 clients; Professional $69/month ($59/month annual) for 300 clients; Plus $99/month ($89/month annual) for unlimited clients. The catch for course creators: evergreen programs, portal branding, a custom URL and SMS start on Plus. Below the Team plan, each account has one practitioner. Free trials run 14 days on most paid plans and 30 days on Team.
Students get a capable practitioner app, but it is built around charting, protocols and telehealth rather than a course with community. Its older profile notes no website builder or funnel pages. Trustpilot showed 3.8 from 87 reviews in October 2026.
Pick it over Coachful if you run a nutrition or wellness practice that needs charting and telehealth, and your course is a supporting resource rather than the main product.
7. CoachAccountable: strong accountability, no native app
CoachAccountable has no native mobile app, according to its older profile, and reviewers wish for a dedicated client app. Students use it in the mobile browser. What it does have is depth on accountability: action plans, metrics, worksheets, courses, invoicing and agreements.

Pricing scales by active clients, as listed in October 2026: $20/month for 2, $40 for 5, $70 for 10, $120 for 20, $250 for 50 and $400 for 100. That gets expensive for large group programs where many students count as active. A 30-day trial with no card and no limits is available, and Trustpilot showed 4.8 from 47 reviews in October 2026, which says a lot about how its existing users feel.
For course creators, the weak point is the experience on the phone and the lack of selling tools: its older profile notes no landing pages, website or marketing automation. If you are weighing a move, our list of CoachAccountable alternatives covers the options.
Pick it over Coachful if your coaching is mostly 1:1 with detailed action plans and metrics, your client count is small, and your clients are happy working in a browser.
8. Thinkific: good course tools, but the branded app costs extra
Thinkific is a course-first platform with strong authoring. On its pricing page when we checked it for this article, Start costs $109/month ($82/month annual) and includes unlimited courses, video lessons, student discussions, live cohorts and coaching, unlimited Zoom sessions, bookable calendars, attendance tracking, and quizzes, assignments and certificates.
Grow is $219/month ($164/month annual) and Expand $499/month ($374/month annual). The fully branded mobile app is a $199/month add-on, included on select Plus plans. Its September 2026 profile notes a Thinkific-branded student app on Start and above at no extra cost, a 30-day trial, 0% platform fee on paid plans, and a 10% price rise applied to existing customers at renewal from August 2026.
For students, the course experience is solid. For coaches, the branded app can cost more than the plan, and Thinkific has no habits or daily check-ins. Email automation typically runs through connected tools. If you are turning your method into a course, read how to turn a coaching framework into an online course before choosing a platform.
Pick it over Coachful if course authoring depth (assignments, certificates, live cohorts) is your priority, you will run scheduling and email marketing elsewhere, and a branded app is not urgent.
9. Skool: is a gamified community enough of a course app?
For a simple paid group, it can be. Skool's app on iOS and Android, per its September 2026 profile, covers the feed, classroom, calendar, DMs and push notifications, but it is not white-label: students install Skool, not your brand.

As listed in October 2026, Hobby costs $9/month ($7.50/month annual) and Pro $99/month ($82.50/month annual), both with unlimited members, courses, videos and live calls. Payments go only through Skool Payments: Hobby charges 10% + 30¢ on every transaction; Pro charges 2.9% + 30¢ up to $899 and 3.9% + 30¢ above $900. Leaderboards add a game layer that some groups love.
There are no 1:1 client records, intake forms, habits or check-ins, and no custom-domain website, funnels or email automation. Trustpilot showed 1.6 from 54 reviews in October 2026. If Skool already feels limiting, see Skool alternatives with courses and coaching.
Pick it over Coachful if you want the cheapest way to run a paid community with a classroom, your students are fine with Skool's own app, and you do not offer individual coaching.
10. ABC Trainerize: only if your course is a training plan
Trainerize is a fitness client app with workouts, habits, nutrition tracking and messaging on iOS and Android. It has no course builder, so it only fits course creators whose "course" is really a workout program.

Pricing as listed in October 2026 is by client seats: Basic $0 for 1 client, Grow $10/month for 2, and Pro from $25/month ($23/month annual) for 5 clients, with Pro tiers at 15, 30, 50, 75, 100 and 200 clients whose prices were not in our data. A custom-branded app is a $169 one-time fee on Pro 30 and above, per its September 2026 profile. Scheduling, selling products, payments, video and advanced nutrition are separate paid add-ons below Studio. A 30-day trial with unlimited clients and no card is available. Trustpilot showed 3.1 from 100 reviews in October 2026.
Fitness coaches comparing options should also read the best course platforms for online fitness coaches.
Pick it over Coachful if you coach in-person and online training clients, need workout programming with client workout tracking, and do not sell lesson-based courses.
How do the student experiences compare feature by feature?

| App | Lessons and drip | Habits and daily check-ins | Community | 1:1 booking | Branding in the app | iPhone and Android |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coachful | Yes, with completion tracking | Yes, plus goals and streaks | Feed, group chat, DMs, events | Yes | Coach's branding inside the Coachful app | Yes |
| Kajabi | Yes | No | Yes | Coaching products | Branded app on Growth and Pro | Growth and Pro |
| Circle | Yes | No | Yes, core strength | No | White-label on Circle Plus only | Yes |
| Mighty Networks | Yes | No | Yes, core strength | No | Own apps on Mighty Pro only | Yes |
| Teachable | Yes | Not in plan list | Teachable Communities | Simple coaching product | No white-label app | Yes |
| Practice Better | Programs (evergreen on Plus) | Journaling and protocols | Not in our data | Yes | Portal branding on Plus | Yes |
| CoachAccountable | Yes | Action plans and metrics | Not in our data | Yes | Not applicable | No native app |
| Thinkific | Yes | No | Communities | Bookable calendars | $199/mo add-on | Yes |
| Skool | Classroom | No | Yes, gamified | No | Not white-label | Yes |
| ABC Trainerize | No course builder | Habits | Not in our data | Paid add-on | $169 one-time on Pro 30+ | Yes |
What does a day in a student's Coachful app look like?
Here is an illustrative example, not a customer story: a student called Maya is in week three of a 12-week confidence program that includes a short course, daily habits and two group calls a month.
- 7:10 am. Maya opens the app and answers her morning check-in: how she slept, her energy, and the one thing she wants to do today.
- 7:15 am. Her week-three lesson has unlocked on the drip schedule. She watches the eight-minute video on the bus and marks it complete.
- 12:30 pm. The lesson's daily task is to speak up once in a meeting. She does it and ticks the habit; her streak moves to nine days.
- 1:00 pm. She posts in her cohort's group chat, which was created automatically when she enrolled. Two classmates reply.
- 6:00 pm. She has a quick question about the exercise and sends her coach a direct message instead of waiting for the next call.
- 8:30 pm. The evening check-in asks how the day went. Her goal progress bar shows week three of twelve.
- Thursday. She gets an email reminder for the group call, then a WhatsApp reminder an hour before, and joins through the video link.
On the coach's side, the same day shows up on Maya's client record: the check-ins, the habit, the lesson completion and the message, with her status marked active. A different student who skipped three check-ins would appear as quiet, which is the cue to reach out. For more on structuring programs like this, see how to run coaching programs with digital courses.
What does each course app cost at 5, 15 and 40 clients?
Costs diverge sharply once you count clients, platform fees and add-ons. The table shows the cheapest listed monthly plan that gives students an app at each size, as listed in October 2026 or on pricing pages we checked for this article. Payment processing fees are extra for every tool.
| App | 5 clients | 15 clients | 40 clients | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coachful | Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients | Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients | Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients | No platform fee; only Stripe or Razorpay processing |
| Kajabi | $249 (Growth, for the app) | $249 | $249 | 0.5% to 2% extra fee on non-Kajabi processors |
| Circle | $89 billed annually | $89 billed annually | $89 billed annually | 2% fee on payments; white-label app only on Circle Plus |
| Mighty Networks | $95 | $95 | $95 | 2% platform fee on Launch |
| Teachable | $39 (Starter) | $39 | $39 | 7.5% fee on Starter; $89 Builder removes it |
| Practice Better | $35 (Starter) | $69 (Professional) | $69 | Branding and evergreen programs need Plus at $99 |
| CoachAccountable | $40 | $120 | $250 | No native app; priced per active client |
| Thinkific | $109 (Start) | $109 | $109 | Branded app adds $199/mo |
| Skool | $9 + 10% + 30¢ per sale | $9 + 10% + 30¢ | $99 Pro may be cheaper | Payments only through Skool Payments |
| ABC Trainerize | $25 (Pro 5) | Price not in our data | Price not in our data | Payments, scheduling and video are add-ons |
Two examples show how the totals move. A coach selling a course plus coaching to 40 clients through Kajabi Growth pays the plan, plus scheduling, contracts and habit tracking elsewhere if the course needs them. A coach on Teachable Starter selling $10,000 of courses in a month (an illustrative figure) pays the 7.5% fee on that revenue, which is worth comparing against the higher plan. When you price your own offer, our guide on packaging coaching with digital courses shows how to build tiers.
What red flags and switching costs should you watch for?
The expensive mistakes are rarely the monthly fee. They are the fees, caps and lock-in that show up once students are inside the app.
- Branded app as a paid upgrade. Several tools put your own branding behind a custom plan or an add-on: Circle Plus, Mighty Pro, Thinkific's $199/month add-on. Price the branded version, not the entry plan.
- Platform fees on every sale. Skool, Circle, Mighty Networks, Teachable Starter and Kajabi (on third-party processors) each take a cut. On a growing course, a percentage beats a flat fee only for a while.
- Caps that bite at launch. Teachable's active-student caps, Kajabi Basic's 2,500 contacts and per-client tiers at CoachAccountable and Trainerize can force an upgrade the week a launch works.
- No native app. A mobile browser portal means no app icon on the student's home screen. Ask how students get back in on day ten.
- The daily layer lives elsewhere. If the course app has no habits or check-ins, you end up adding a second app, and students now juggle two logins.
- Exports you cannot use. Before committing, check what you can take with you. Trainerize's older profile notes an incomplete client export (no messages, photos or attachments). Coachful exports full client data as a ZIP (roster, notes, check-ins, goals, habits, sessions, form responses) and exports courses.
- Re-onboarding students. Switching means every student installs a new app and logs in again. Plan the move between cohorts, and send one clear email with the new install steps. With Coachful, clients, programs and content are imported for you during onboarding.
Marketing the course after you switch is its own job; our playbook for marketing online courses covers the steps.
Which app should you choose for your online course?
Choose by what happens between lessons. If your course is part of a coaching program and you want students doing something every day, Coachful is the best app for online courses on this list: lessons, habits, check-ins, community, messages and booking in one client app on iPhone and Android, with your branding inside the Coachful app and one login for you.
If your course is the whole product and the community carries it, Circle or Mighty Networks fit, as long as you accept the platform fees and the vendor-branded app. If you sell many standalone products to a large list, Kajabi's Growth plan is the polished option. For a single self-paced course on a small budget, Teachable gets students onto their phones cheaply. CoachAccountable, Practice Better, Thinkific, Skool and Trainerize each suit a narrower case described above.
Whichever you pick, test it the way a student would: install the app, open a lesson on a weak connection, find the group, and see how many taps it takes to check in. For a wider look at coach-facing tools, see the best coaching apps for online coaches or compare plans on the plans page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best app for online courses if I also coach clients 1:1?
Coachful, because the same client app holds the course, the daily habits and check-ins, the community and session booking, and the coach runs it all from one login. Course-only apps like Teachable or Thinkific handle lessons well but leave the coaching layer to other tools.
Can I have my own app in the App Store?
Some platforms offer it at extra cost: Thinkific as a $199/month add-on, Mighty Networks on Mighty Pro, Circle on Circle Plus. Coachful's client app is on iPhone and Android under the Coachful listing with your branding inside it; it is not your own App Store account.
Which course apps have no native mobile app?
In this list, CoachAccountable has no native mobile app according to its older profile. Paperbell and Satori, which we did not rank, also run in the mobile browser only according to their older profiles.
Do students need a separate app for habits and check-ins?
Only if the course app lacks them. Kajabi, Circle, Mighty Networks, Thinkific, Teachable (by its plan list) and Skool do not offer per-student habits or daily check-ins, so coaches using them often add another tool. Coachful includes habits, morning and evening check-ins, goals and streaks in the same app as the lessons.
What is Coachful's free white-glove service?
It is a build service included on every plan: you describe what you want, such as a course outline and written lessons, a program, a website or a funnel, and attach links and files. The Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours, without inventing credentials, testimonials or prices. It does not include recording videos, logo design or ad management.
Which course app is cheapest?
Skool's Hobby plan has the lowest listed monthly fee at $9, but it charges 10% + 30¢ on every sale. Teachable Starter is $39/month with a 7.5% fee. Check the cost table above against your expected revenue, because percentage fees often outweigh a lower subscription.
Can I sell my course and take payments inside the same app?
With Coachful, payments run through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account, including subscriptions, payment plans, coupons, Apple Pay and Google Pay, with no platform fee on top of processing. Skool requires Skool Payments, and Kajabi adds a fee if you use a processor other than Kajabi Payments or PayPal.
Does Coachful sync with fitness wearables?
No. Coachful does not sync with Garmin, Fitbit, Whoop or Oura, and Apple Health sync is not publicly available. If your course depends on wearable data, a fitness-specific app may suit you better.
How hard is it to move students to a new course app?
The main cost is re-onboarding: every student installs a new app and logs in. Move between cohorts where possible, export your data first, and send one clear set of install steps. Coachful imports clients, programs and content for you during onboarding.
