Career Coach Salary in 2026: Rates, Pay and Client Math

The typical career coach salary in 2026 is $49,000 to $72,000 a year, based on PayScale, ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor data compiled in Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report. Most career coaches charge $100 to $250 a session. For comparison, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $64,330 in May 2025 for school and career counselors and advisors, a related but different occupation that usually requires a master's degree.
Career coaching has an income quirk the other niches don't. Clients hire you in a hurry and leave the moment they land the job, which is the point. So a career coach's income depends less on the rate and more on how many new clients start each month. This guide covers the numbers with their sources, the employed and self-employed versions of the job, and the new-clients-times-package arithmetic that decides what you'll actually earn.

The report's one-line explanation of where career coaching sits: it is "bought at a moment of urgency, which supports a high single-session price but rarely a long engagement." It rates the niche as medium on income, saturation and difficulty to enter, and pairs it with people coming from HR, recruiting or career services.

Employed or self-employed: two different career coach salaries
Career coaches are paid in two broad ways.
- Employed. A university career center, an outplacement firm, a workforce program or a company's HR team pays a salary to help people find work. The employer brings the clients. Roles like these are what the $49,000 to $72,000 band mostly captures.
- Self-employed. You sell sessions and packages directly to job seekers and career changers, or occasionally to employers. Income is revenue minus costs and tax, and it swings with the job market and your marketing.
The BLS draws its own line between the two kinds of work. Its school and career counselors page says "career coaches work with people who have already entered the workforce," and that they also advise on entering a new occupation or resolving workplace issues. It also notes that some states require licensure for career counselors, and that career counselors in private practice may also need a license, so check your state before you call yourself a counselor rather than a coach.
Here's what the BLS reports for that adjacent occupation by work setting. It's a benchmark for employed career-services pay, not a coach salary.
| Work setting (adjacent occupation) | Median pay, May 2025 |
|---|---|
| Local elementary and secondary schools | $77,800 |
| Private elementary and secondary schools | $62,190 |
| State and local colleges and universities | $58,870 |
| Private colleges and universities | $58,720 |
| Private other educational services | $57,480 |
BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, school and career counselors and advisors, fetched October 2026. About 389,500 jobs in 2025, 3 percent projected growth from 2025 to 2035; lowest 10 percent under $45,020, highest 10 percent over $104,770.
The career coach's real income question: new clients a month
Most career clients buy a short package, get the offer and stop. That's success, but it means a career coach rebuilds a large share of the client list every quarter. The report's observed packages make the sum concrete: a four-session job search sprint over four to six weeks at $500 to $1,000, and an eight-session, three-month career transition package at $1,200 to $2,500.
| New clients a month | On a $750 job search sprint | On an $1,800 transition package | Clients in coaching at once (transition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | $18,000 a year | $43,200 a year | About 6 |
| 4 | $36,000 a year | $86,400 a year | About 12 |
| 6 | $54,000 a year | $129,600 a year | About 18 |
Our arithmetic: new clients a month × 12 × package price, revenue before costs and tax. Package prices sit inside the ranges in Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report. Clients at once assumes each transition package runs three months.
Two readings of that table. First, the sprint alone struggles to reach the salary band: you'd need about five or six new clients every month. Second, the transition package reaches the middle of the band at three new clients a month, and four new clients a month takes you past the top of it, with about twelve people in coaching at once. The ICF Global Coaching Study 2025, as compiled in the report, puts the average coach at 12.4 clients, so that's a full but normal load.
Working backwards from the band: $49,000 on an $1,800 package is 28 packages a year, a little over two a month. $72,000 is 40 packages, a bit over three a month.

Career coach pay by experience
The report's practitioner estimates for career coaching put newer coaches at $75 to $150 an hour, experienced coaches at $150 to $300 and the top of the niche at $300 to $600. These are estimates, not study findings. The marketplace sample above, where single sessions ran $99 to $280, sits in the newer-to-experienced range.
Across all coaching, income builds slowly: the report puts first-year coaches at $20,000 to $30,000 and those with one to four years at $40,000 to $65,000 (PayScale, ZipRecruiter and practitioner reports). For career coaches, the step change usually comes from a specialty the market pays for: executives between roles, engineers moving into management, people returning to work, a single industry you know from the inside.
Five ways career coaches raise their income
- Sell the transition package, not the session. A single CV review at $150 earns $150. The same client in an eight-session package earns roughly ten times that and usually gets further.
- Add a follow-on. A "first 90 days in the new role" package turns a finished job search into a second sale, to a client who now has a salary.
- Run a group. A cohort of job seekers working through the same search plan shares one weekly call. Our group career coaching pilot plan walks through a first run.
- Sell to employers. Outplacement and internal mobility programs are paid from a budget, not a household. Across coaching, the report puts organization-level retainers at $3,000 to $10,000 a month.
- Build a lead source that doesn't stop. Because clients leave on success, a career coach needs a steady flow of new ones: a free scorecard or checklist, an email sequence and a booking link. Our guide to lead magnets for career coaches has five examples.

From revenue to take-home pay
A self-employed career coach pays the IRS's 15.3% self-employment tax on net earnings, for Social Security and Medicare, plus income tax. Add software, insurance, any credential renewals, payment processing and the unpaid hours: discovery calls, CV markups done between sessions, LinkedIn reviews and follow-up emails. A $1,800 package that takes twelve hours of your time, including the work between calls, pays $150 an hour before costs, which is still a solid rate. One that takes twenty hours pays $90.
That last calculation is worth running on your own packages. Our guide to setting a coaching revenue target works from take-home pay back to packages, and how much career coaches charge covers pricing CV reviews, interview prep and LinkedIn work.

Do certifications raise a career coach's pay?
The 2026 report doesn't break out pay by career coaching credential. Across all coaching, the ICF Global Coaching Study 2025 as compiled in the report puts ICF ACC holders at $63,000 a year on average, 21 percent more than coaches without a credential, and PCC holders at $78,000. Career-services credentials from the National Career Development Association or the Center for Credentialing & Education are built for a different kind of work: career services of the sort done in schools, colleges and workforce programs. Our comparison of career coach certifications sets out which body certifies what, and how to become a career coach covers the full route.

Frequently asked questions
How much do career coaches make a year?
Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report puts career coaches at $49,000 to $72,000 a year, from PayScale, ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor data. Those sources lean toward employed roles. A self-employed coach's income depends mostly on how many new clients start each month and which package they buy.
How much do career coaches charge per hour?
Most charge $100 to $250 a session, based on PayScale data and practitioner reports. Among 35 career coaches on the Career Contessa marketplace in 2026, a single session cost $99 to $280. Practitioner estimates put the top of the niche at $300 to $600.
What is the BLS salary for career coaches?
The BLS doesn't publish one. Its closest occupation, school and career counselors and advisors, had a median of $64,330 in May 2025, mostly in schools and colleges, with a master's degree as the typical entry education. Use it as a benchmark for employed career-services pay, not as coach income.
How many clients does a career coach need to make $70,000?
About 39 three-month transition packages a year at $1,800, or a little over three new clients a month. On a $750 job search sprint alone, it would take about eight new clients a month, which is why most career coaches lead with a longer package.
Can a career coach make six figures?
Some do, usually with a specialty that pays, such as executives between roles, a longer transition package, a group program or employer contracts. At $2,500 per package, $100,000 of revenue is 40 clients a year, before costs and tax.
Is career coaching a good business?
The report rates it as medium on income and medium on saturation, which is a reasonable middle ground. The challenge is client turnover: clients leave when they succeed, so the business needs a lead source that never stops. Coaches with HR, recruiting or career services backgrounds tend to have an easier start.
Will Coachful build my career coaching website for free?
Yes. Coachful's team builds career coaching websites, offer pages and lead funnels for free on every plan, inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. Coachful is a paid membership; the build costs nothing extra.
