How Much Do Career Coaches Charge? 2026 Rates and Packages

How Much Do Career Coaches Charge? 2026 Rates and Packages

How much do career coaches charge? In 2026, most career coaches charge $100 to $250 for a one-hour session. Most also sell short packages: a four-session job search sprint typically costs $500 to $1,000, and a three-month career transition package $1,200 to $2,500. Those ranges come from Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report, which compiles PayScale salary data, practitioner reports and the published rates of 35 career coaches on the Career Contessa marketplace.

Career coaching prices behave differently from other coaching. People usually buy in a hurry, after a layoff, before an interview or during a job search that has dragged on, so a single session commands a solid price but long engagements are rarer. Below are the numbers by experience and package, what CV reviews and interview prep cost inside those packages, who pays, and how to set your own rate. If you're a career coach who wants the offer page and checkout built rather than built by you, Coachful's team does that for free on every plan.

A note on the evidence: no large public study measures what career coaches charge per session. Each range below names its source, and some are practitioner estimates rather than measurements.

How much do career coaches charge per session?

The typical career coach charges $100 to $250 for an hour-long session, according to PayScale data and practitioner reports compiled in the 2026 report. Experience moves the number a long way.

Career stageTypical hourly rateWhat usually explains it
Newer career coach$75 to $150A first niche, few client results to point to, sessions sold one at a time
Experienced career coach$150 to $300A defined audience (say, engineers moving into product), a repeatable package, referrals from past clients
Top of the niche$300 to $600Senior clients, a known track record in one industry, waiting lists or employer contracts

A second check comes from published prices. Among 35 career coaches listing public rates on the Career Contessa marketplace in 2026, a single session cost $99 to $280. That's one marketplace with its own positioning, so read it as a realistic picture of mid-market career coaching rather than the whole profession.

For comparison, the profession-wide average was $234 an hour in 2025, up from $214 in 2023, according to the ICF Global Coaching Study 2025 and PayScale as compiled in the report. That figure includes executive coaching billed to employers, which pulls it up. It's the wrong benchmark for a career coach selling to individuals.

How much do career coaching packages cost?

Most career coaching is sold as short packages built around a job search or a transition. These are the three package shapes the report observes in the market:

PackageSessions and lengthWhat's usually includedTypical pricePer session
Single session1 session of 50 minutesPrep from an intake form$99 to $280$99 to $280
Job search sprint4 sessions of 50 minutes over 4 to 6 weeksA CV review and a LinkedIn audit$500 to $1,000$125 to $250
Career transition8 sessions of 50 minutes over 3 monthsInterview prep and negotiation coaching$1,200 to $2,500$150 to about $310

Package shapes and price ranges observed in the market, from Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report (practitioner reports and published rates), Q2 2026. The per-session column is our arithmetic: price divided by sessions, before counting the CV and LinkedIn work.

Look at the per-session column. Inside a sprint or transition package, a career coach often earns as much per session as a single session, or more, while also doing CV and LinkedIn work. Practitioner reports put the premium for packaged coaching at 40 to 60 percent per hour across coaching niches. That's an estimate, but the logic holds: a package sells a result over a fixed period, not an hour of time.

What career coaches charge for CV reviews, interview prep and LinkedIn

This is where the data runs out, so we'll say so plainly: the 2026 report doesn't price CV reviews, mock interviews or LinkedIn audits as separate services. It records them as part of packages, with the CV review and LinkedIn audit inside the job search sprint and interview prep and negotiation coaching inside the transition package.

If you want to sell them separately, price them from your own rate rather than from a number you saw on someone's website:

  1. Time the work honestly. A CV review isn't the 20 minutes of reading. It's reading, rewriting suggestions, a call to walk through them and one round of follow-up. Add it up.
  2. Multiply by your hourly rate. If you charge $150 an hour and a CV review takes two and a half hours end to end, it's a $375 service.
  3. Decide whether you want to sell it at all. Many career coaches use a standalone CV review as a paid first step that leads into a sprint, and price it so the sprint is the obvious better deal.
  4. Keep the scope in writing. One rewrite round, one follow-up call, delivered within ten working days. Without scope, a CV review becomes a month of edits.

The same arithmetic applies to mock interviews (session time plus written feedback) and LinkedIn work (audit, rewrite, and a check-in after the client has posted for a few weeks).

Why career coaching is priced the way it is

The report sums up the niche as "bought at a moment of urgency, which supports a high single-session price but rarely a long engagement." It rates career coaching as medium on income, medium on saturation and medium on difficulty to enter, and describes it as urgency-driven with short engagements (ICF Global Coaching Study 2025 and practitioner reports, as compiled in the report).

Here's how career coaching compares with other niches on hourly rates:

NicheTypical hourly rateSources in the report
Life coaching$75 to $200PayScale, practitioner reports
Health and wellness$75 to $200PayScale, practitioner reports
Career coaching$100 to $250PayScale, practitioner reports
Leadership coaching$150 to $400ICF 2025, PayScale
Business coaching$150 to $400ICF 2025, PayScale
Executive coaching$200 to $500ICF 2025, PayScale

Career coaching sits just above life coaching and just below leadership work. We cover the neighbours in detail in what life coaches charge, what business coaches charge and executive coaching rates. The gap to leadership and executive coaching is mostly about who pays: once an employer funds the coaching, prices rise. A career coach who coaches new managers into their first leadership role is often pricing against a company's development budget, even when the sessions look much the same as career coaching.

On annual earnings, the report puts career coaches at $49,000 to $72,000 a year, from PayScale, ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor. Those aggregators lean toward employed and posted roles, so they under-represent self-employed coaches at both the bottom and the top.

Who pays for career coaching?

Two kinds of buyer pay for career coaching, and they pay very differently.

  • Individuals pay from their own pocket, usually in a transition: a career change, a layoff, a return to work, a first job or a promotion they're chasing. They decide quickly and care about results and testimonials more than credentials.
  • Organizations pay for their people: outplacement for departing staff, internal mobility, early-career programs, and universities and business schools that contract outside coaches. They move slowly and often ask for a credential.

Across the whole profession, nearly six in ten coaching clients are employer-sponsored, according to the ICF Global Coaching Study 2025 as cited in the report. The report's comparison of consumer and corporate coaching shows what that changes:

FactorPaid by the individualPaid by an organization
Average engagement fee$1,500 to $8,000$10,000 to $50,000+
Sales cycle1 to 3 weeks1 to 6 months
CredentialingPreferredOften mandatory
Decision-makerThe individualHR, L&D or the executive team
Renewal likelihood35 to 50%55 to 65%

If you want employer work, start early: a credential, a one-page proposal and a pilot take months to land. Our guide to pitching an employer-paid coaching pilot covers the first conversation, and these coaching proposal examples show what to send afterwards.

How should a career coach set their rate?

Start from the income you need and the packages you can realistically sell, then check the result against the ranges above. Here's a worked example for a career coach selling job search sprints and transition packages. The figures are illustrations inside the published ranges, not market data.

  1. Set a yearly target before tax and costs. Say $70,000.
  2. Choose a package mix. Twenty transition packages a year at $1,800 bring in $36,000. Forty sprints at $750 bring in $30,000. A handful of paid single sessions and CV reviews covers the rest.
  3. Count the hours. A transition package is eight 50-minute sessions plus prep, interview practice and negotiation support: call it 14 hours. A sprint is four sessions plus a CV review and LinkedIn audit: call it 8 hours. That mix is roughly 600 client hours a year, or about 13 a week across 46 working weeks.
  4. Check it's sellable. Sixty package clients a year is five a month. Can your audience, network and content produce that many paying clients? If not, raise the price or narrow the niche.
  5. Subtract costs. Software, insurance, training, payment processing and tax all come out of the total. Our startup budget for a coaching business lists them line by line.

The arithmetic shows why single sessions alone rarely work. At $150 a session, $70,000 needs more than 460 paid sessions a year, and a career client who lands a job stops booking.

Raise prices on purpose and for new clients first. How to raise package prices without losing trust walks through it, and a sliding scale with clear rules keeps places open for people between jobs.

How to price a job search package so it sells

  • Time-box it. "Four sessions over six weeks" sells better than "four sessions", because a job search feels endless and a deadline feels like progress.
  • List the deliverables. A rewritten CV, an updated LinkedIn profile, a target company list, two mock interviews with written feedback. Clients pay for things they can point to.
  • Decide what happens if they're hired early. Some coaches convert unused sessions into negotiation and first-90-days support. Put it in the agreement.
  • Never guarantee a job. Say what you do and what the client does. A guarantee invites refund disputes and isn't something any coach controls.
  • Offer instalments on the larger package. Someone who has just been laid off may not want $1,800 to leave their account at once. Our guide to payment plans for coaching shows how to schedule them.
  • Show a starting price. "From $750" on your website filters out people who can't afford you. This piece weighs showing prices before the discovery call.

Selling career coaching packages in Coachful

In Coachful, each package is an offer: one-time, recurring or split into a payment plan, with a coaching agreement sent for e-signature and a booking step behind it. The client pays at checkout, signs before the first session and books from your availability, and the payment lands on their client record next to their sessions.

  • Single sessions and CV reviews as paid session types, paid at booking, with intake questions attached so you can prepare.
  • Sprints and transition packages as offers that include the sessions, attached to a multi-week program with tasks and check-ins.
  • The job search itself in the Career Coaching power-up: a shared place for each client's connections, job applications and interviews, a LinkedIn content plan and a CV builder, with reminders for follow-ups and interviews and an overview of what's due across all your clients.
  • Payments to your own Stripe or Razorpay account, with cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay and a 0% Coachful platform fee.

Frequently asked questions

How much do career coaches charge per hour?

Most career coaches charge $100 to $250 an hour in 2026, based on PayScale data and practitioner reports compiled in Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report. Practitioner estimates put newer coaches at $75 to $150 and the top of the niche at $300 to $600. Among 35 coaches on the Career Contessa marketplace, a single session cost $99 to $280.

How much does a career coaching package cost?

A four-session job search sprint over four to six weeks, with a CV review and LinkedIn audit, typically costs $500 to $1,000. A three-month transition package of eight sessions with interview prep and negotiation coaching typically costs $1,200 to $2,500, according to the 2026 report.

How much do career coaches charge for a resume or CV review?

The 2026 report doesn't price CV reviews on their own; it records them inside job search packages that cost $500 to $1,000. To price one separately, time the full job (reading, suggestions, a walkthrough call and a follow-up) and multiply by your hourly rate.

Is a career coach worth the money?

It depends on what's at stake. For someone negotiating a new salary or changing fields, a few sessions can matter a lot; for someone who mainly needs a template CV, a cheaper service may do. Ask a coach what's included, how long it runs, and what they will and won't do, and never pay for a guaranteed job.

Do employers pay for career coaching?

Often. Outplacement firms, internal mobility programs, universities and business schools all hire career coaches. Across coaching as a whole, nearly six in ten clients are employer-sponsored, according to the ICF Global Coaching Study 2025 as cited in the report, and employer-paid engagements are larger but slower to win.

How much should a new career coach charge?

Practitioner estimates put newer career coaches at $75 to $150 an hour, but work it out from your own numbers: yearly target divided by the packages you can realistically sell. Most new career coaches do better with a time-boxed sprint than with single sessions, because job seekers stop booking once they're hired.

Can Coachful build my career coaching sales page for free?

Yes. The free build service covers offer and sales pages, websites, funnels and more, on every Coachful plan. Fill in the form from Create or the Website page, and the team replies with next steps, usually within about 24 hours. Payments then go to your own Stripe account with a 0% platform fee.

How much do career coaches make a year?

The 2026 report puts career coaches at $49,000 to $72,000 a year, from PayScale, ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor. Those figures lean toward employed roles, so self-employed coaches can earn well below or well above that band depending on niche, price and how many packages they sell.
