Business Coach Salary in 2026: Retainers, Rates and Pay

The typical business coach salary in 2026 is $80,000 to $110,000 a year, according to the ICF Global Coaching Study 2025, PayScale and ZipRecruiter as compiled in Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report. Business coaches typically charge $150 to $400 an hour, and when Coachful collected the published rates of 60 business coaches, most sat in that same range. The nearest government figure is for an adjacent occupation, management analysts, whose median pay was $101,860 in May 2025 according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Business coaching pays more than most coaching niches for one plain reason: the client is a business, and the fee can be argued against its revenue. But "salary" fits it badly. Most business coaches are self-employed, and their income is a count of retainers and programs, not a pay grade. This guide gives the figures with their sources, then works out how many clients at what price add up to each one.
One early cost to skip: Coachful's team builds your business coaching website, sales page and lead funnel for free on every plan.

Why business coaches out-earn most niches
The report's explanation is that business coaching is "priced against the client's own revenue, which gives the fee an obvious return to argue from." A founder doing $400,000 a year can weigh a $4,000 engagement against one extra client or one fixed leak in the funnel. A household weighing a life coach has no such sum to run.
It rates business coaching as high on income and high on saturation, with a medium barrier to entry, summed up as "crowded, but the buyer has a budget." In plain terms: there are a lot of business coaches, the ones who earn well can show what their clients gained, and the report pairs the niche with people from sales, marketing or entrepreneurship backgrounds.
Who the client is changes the shape of the work. Coaching bought by an individual owner has a sales cycle of one to three weeks in the report's comparison, and renewal likelihood of 35 to 50 percent. Coaching bought by a company has a sales cycle of one to six months and renewal likelihood of 55 to 65 percent. Small-business coaching usually sits in the first column, which is why repeat business takes deliberate work.
How the fee gets justified
Because the buyer has a revenue line, a business coach can do the sum with them. Take a 90-day accelerator at $3,000, inside the report's $3,000 to $6,000 range, sold to a bookkeeper whose average client is worth $2,000 a year. The engagement pays for itself if it helps her win two more clients, or keep two she'd otherwise lose. Showing that calculation on the discovery call is fair, as long as you don't promise the outcome. It's the report's point about the niche in practice: the fee has an obvious return to argue from.
The BLS job closest to business coaching
The BLS doesn't track business coaches. The nearest occupation is management analysts, often called management consultants, who advise organizations on how to improve. The figures below describe that adjacent job, not coaching.
| Management analysts (adjacent occupation) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Median pay, May 2025 | $101,860 ($48.97 an hour) |
| Lowest 10 percent / highest 10 percent | Under $60,640 / over $171,640 |
| Jobs, 2025 | About 1,077,100 |
| Self-employed share | 14% |
| Projected growth, 2025 to 2035 | 10%, much faster than average |
| Typical entry education | Bachelor's degree |

The comparison is useful because many business coaches come from consulting, and many sell something between the two. A consultant is paid to find the answer; a coach is paid to help the owner find and carry it out. Clients pay for both, but if you drift into doing the work for them, you've become a consultant charging coaching rates. Our explainer on what business coaching is draws that line, and how to price consulting services covers the other side of it.

Retainers times clients: what a business coaching practice earns
Most of a business coach's income comes from retainers and fixed-length programs. The report observes monthly retainers of two to four sessions plus on-call access at $1,500 to $4,000 a month. Here's what different client counts produce at three points in that range. These are worked examples, not measured incomes.
| Retainer clients | At $1,500 a month | At $2,500 a month | At $4,000 a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | $54,000 | $90,000 | $144,000 |
| 5 | $90,000 | $150,000 | $240,000 |
| 8 | $144,000 | $240,000 | $384,000 |
Our arithmetic: clients × monthly fee × 12, with every client kept all year. Revenue before costs and tax.
Five clients at $1,500 already reaches the report's salary band, and that's the point of the table: business coaching doesn't need many clients. It needs the right ones, and it needs them to stay. Eight clients on four sessions a month is about 32 sessions a month, a manageable week. Keeping eight business owners for twelve months is the hard part, which is why the report's 35 to 50 percent renewal estimate for individually bought coaching deserves a place in your plan.
Run your own version: if half of your 90-day clients move onto a retainer, every two new program clients become one long-term client. That single ratio does more for annual income than a rate rise.

The three-tier structure behind six-figure practices
The report describes the structure most coaches earning above $100,000 use: three tiers, so the client chooses how much of you to buy.
| Tier | Length and calls | Support | Price range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | 3 months, 6 calls | Email only | $1,500 to $3,000 |
| Core | 3 to 6 months, 8 to 12 calls | Messaging included | $3,000 to $6,000+ |
| Premium | 6 months, weekly | Priority async access | $7,500 to $15,000+ |
From Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report (practitioner reports and the ICF Global Coaching Study 2025).
A worked year at prices inside those ranges: 12 entry clients at $2,000 ($24,000), 10 core clients at $4,500 ($45,000) and 4 premium clients at $9,000 ($36,000) is $105,000. Assuming 10 calls per core client and weekly calls for premium clients, that's about 276 calls a year, roughly six a week. Practitioner reports in the report also put packaged work at 40 to 60 percent more per hour than single sessions, an estimate rather than a measurement. Our guide to structuring three coaching packages covers how to set the gaps between tiers, and how much business coaches charge lists the package prices in detail.

Business coach pay by experience
The report's estimates for business coaching, from the ICF 2025 study and practitioner reports, put entry-level coaches at $100 to $200 an hour, experienced coaches at $200 to $400 and the top of the niche at $400 to $1,000 or more. The 60-coach sample of published rates fits that picture: a few at $75, a few at $1,000, most between $150 and $400.
Profession-wide, income climbs with years in practice: $40,000 to $65,000 between years one and four, $65,000 to $100,000 between years five and nine, and $90,000 to $180,000 between years ten and nineteen, as referrals take over from marketing (PayScale, ZipRecruiter, Salary.com and the ICF 2025 study). Those bands cover every niche; business coaching's rates start higher than most. The sibling guides to executive coach salary and career coach salary show the neighbors.
What comes off the top
Revenue isn't pay. A self-employed business coach pays the IRS's 15.3% self-employment tax on net earnings plus income tax, and covers insurance, software, payment processing, any paid frameworks or assessments, and the unpaid hours spent on discovery calls, proposals and content. Our guide to the financial setup after your first payment covers the accounts, and a cash reserve for slow months covers the gaps between retainers.

Frequently asked questions
How much do business coaches make a year?
Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report puts business coaches at $80,000 to $110,000 a year, from the ICF Global Coaching Study 2025, PayScale and ZipRecruiter. Most business coaches are self-employed, so actual income depends on how many retainer or program clients they keep and at what price.
How much do business coaches charge per hour?
Typically $150 to $400 an hour, from the ICF 2025 study and PayScale. In a sample of 60 business coaches' published rates collected by Coachful in 2026, prices ran from $75 to $1,000 a session, with most between $150 and $400.
How many clients does a business coach need to make $100,000?
About six retainer clients at $1,500 a month, or four at $2,500, kept for a full year. On a tiered model, around 26 clients a year across entry, core and premium packages can add up to $105,000. All of these are revenue before costs and tax.
Is a business coach paid more than a consultant?
Not usually. The BLS median for management analysts, the consulting occupation, was $101,860 in May 2025, close to the top of the business coaching band. The two jobs overlap, but a consultant is paid to deliver answers and a coach to help the owner find and act on them.
Do you need a degree to earn well as a business coach?
No license or degree is required to coach business owners. What raises income in the data is experience, a niche with a budget and a track record clients can check. The report pairs business coaching with sales, marketing and entrepreneurship backgrounds.
Why do some business coaches charge $1,000 an hour?
They sell a track record to clients with large revenue, so the fee is small against what's at stake. The report's estimate for the top of business coaching is $400 to $1,000 or more an hour, and the highest published rate in Coachful's 60-coach sample was $1,000 a session.
Will Coachful build my business coaching website for free?
Yes. Coachful's team builds business coaching websites, sales pages and funnels for free on every plan, inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. Coachful is a paid membership; the build costs nothing extra.
