Life Coaching Business Plan (Free Template + Filled Example)

Life Coaching Business Plan (Free Template + Filled Example)

A life coaching business plan is a one-page working document that answers six questions: who you coach, what changes for them, what you sell at which price, how many clients that takes to hit your income goal, where those clients come from, and what you will have done in the next 90 days. Below you will find the decisions to settle first, a free copyable template written for life coaches, a filled example for a fictional coach, and a plain look at where each part of the plan lives once real clients arrive.

We make Coachful, the coaching platform this blog belongs to, so the last third of this article shows how the plan turns into a working practice there: offers, intake questions on booking, a coaching agreement signed before the first call, check-ins and habits between sessions, invoices, and the numbers you review each week, all stored on each client record. The template itself works in any document tool. If you want a broader, niche-neutral version, our coaching business plan template covers that, and the coach business plan guide goes deeper on the reasoning behind each section. This page stays specific to life coaching.

What decisions should you make before filling in a life coaching business plan?

Make seven decisions first: who you coach, the change you promise, the format, the price, the income target, the first acquisition channel and the hours you can give. Every line of the template depends on these, and leaving them open is why most coaching plans read like wish lists.

Life coaching is the easiest coaching niche to enter and the hardest to sell, because "a better life" is not something a buyer can picture. The decisions below force the plan into something a stranger could repeat back to you after one conversation.

DecisionThe question to answerA weak answerA usable answer
Who you coachWhich person, at which moment of life, already knows they want help?"Anyone who feels stuck""Parents in the first year after their youngest leaves home"
The change you promiseWhat is visibly different after 12 weeks?"Clarity and confidence""A written plan for the next five years and two habits already running"
Format1:1, group, or a mix?"Whatever the client prefers""12-week 1:1 package first; a small group cohort once 8 clients have finished"
PriceWhat does the core package cost, and what does that work out to per session?"I'll see what people pay""[Package price] for 12 weeks, about [per-session equivalent] per session"
Income targetWhat gross revenue do you need in 12 months, and how many active clients is that?"Six figures""[Target] gross, which needs [number] active clients at my price"
First channelWhere do your people already gather and talk about this transition?"Social media""Two local parent networks and a weekly LinkedIn post"
HoursHow many hours a week can you coach and sell, honestly?"Full time, eventually""15 hours: 8 coaching, 5 marketing, 2 admin"

If the first two rows feel hard, spend an hour with the wheel of life tool on yourself and three past conversations with people you have helped informally. The area of life where you were most useful is usually the niche. Our guide on how to start a life coaching business walks through narrowing a niche in more detail.

What does the free life coaching business plan template look like?

It is eleven short sections that fit on one or two pages. Copy everything below into a document, replace each [bracketed] field, and delete any prompt once you have answered it. Write in plain sentences; if a section takes more than five lines, you have not decided yet.

    • One thing to stop, one thing to keep, one thing to try next week.
Work out your price with the session rate calculator

Section five is where most life coaching plans fall apart, so it helps to start from evidence instead of a round number. PayScale's coaching salary data, as summarised in our rates research, puts life coaching at roughly $75 to $200 an hour, and community estimates put new life coaches at $50 to $100 per session and experienced coaches at $100 to $200. Our own small sample of 18 published life coach session rates clustered between $100 and $250, with outliers from $50 to $980. Treat these as ranges to position against, not as what you will earn.

Why does each section of the template matter?

Each section answers a question a prospect, a partner or your future self will ask. The table shows what each one is for and the mistake to watch for when you fill it in.

SectionWhy it mattersWhat to watch for
1. Who I coachDecides every word on your website and where you spend marketing hours.Demographics without a life moment. "Women 35 to 50" is a segment; "women in the year after a divorce is final" is a niche.
2. The changeGives the buyer something to picture and you something to measure.Feelings only. Add one output and one behaviour a client could show a friend.
3. Scope and referralProtects clients and you; life coaching clients bring mental health topics often. No named referral resources. Fill them in before the first client, not during a hard session.
4. Offer ladderLets people say yes at the level they trust you today.Five offers at launch. Start with one core offer and one free entry point.
5. Pricing mathTurns an income wish into a client count you can plan around.Hourly thinking. Clients buy a 12-week change, not 8 hours.
6. AcquisitionMost new life coaches fail on clients, not coaching skill.Channels picked because they are popular rather than because your niche is there.
7. Client journeyShows where the agreement, intake and check-ins happen before you improvise them.Delivery that only exists in sessions. The change happens between calls.
8. Tools and costsGives a break-even number and stops tool sprawl.Six subscriptions before the first client.
9. Legal and moneyRegistration, tax and insurance vary by country and state.Copying another country's rules. Check with an accountant or attorney locally.
10. 90-day milestonesMakes the plan a schedule rather than a vision.Milestones you cannot control, such as "go viral". Use activity and conversion counts.
11. Weekly numbersTells you which part of the plan is broken.Only tracking revenue, which lags the problem by weeks.

The U.S. Small Business Administration's guide to writing a business plan describes a longer traditional plan and a lean one-page format. For a solo life coach who is not raising money, the lean format above is enough; a bank or partner may ask for the longer version.

What must life coaches add that a generic plan leaves out?

Four things: a written scope of practice with referral triggers, a plan for sensitive information, the agreement terms clients sign, and the local legal and tax setup. Generic business plan templates skip all four because they were written for shops and agencies, not for people who hear about grief, divorce and panic attacks on Tuesday afternoons.

Scope of practice and when to refer

Life coaching is not therapy, counselling or treatment. Write that sentence in your plan, on your website and in your agreement. Then list the topics that mean you pause coaching and refer: talk of self-harm or suicide, low mood that has lasted weeks and affects daily functioning, trauma symptoms, substance dependence, disordered eating, and any sign of abuse or danger at home. Keep a local crisis number in your plan. The ICF Code of Ethics asks coaches to be clear about the nature and limits of coaching and to refer to other professionals when that serves the client, which is a sound standard even if you hold no credential.

Sensitive information

Clients will tell you about health, relationships, money and family. Decide where notes live, who can read them, and how long you keep them. If you coach people in the EU or UK, data protection law applies to that information. Coaching platforms are not clinical record systems: Coachful, for example, is not HIPAA-certified, so a coach who is also a licensed clinician should keep clinical records in a clinical system and keep coaching notes separate.

The agreement

Your plan should name the terms your coaching agreement covers: what coaching is and is not, confidentiality and its limits, session length, rescheduling and cancellation, payment and refunds, and how either side ends the engagement. Our coaching contracts page shows how agreements are sent and signed before the first call.

Registration, tax and insurance

How you register a coaching business, which taxes you pay and when, and whether you need a licence differ by country, state and sometimes city. In the U.S., the IRS Self-Employed Individuals Tax Center explains self-employment tax and estimated payments. Elsewhere, start with your national tax authority. Check with an accountant or attorney before you take the first payment, and ask an insurance broker about professional liability cover for coaches.

What does a filled life coaching business plan look like?

Here is the template completed for a fictional coach. This is an example. The person, prices and targets are illustrative, chosen to show the math working; the per-session figure sits inside the published ranges quoted above.

EXAMPLE: Life coaching business plan for "Jordan Hale, Next Chapter Coaching"
Plan date: 1 November 2026 · Review date: 1 February 2027

  1. Who I coach. Parents aged 45 to 60 in the first 18 months after their youngest child has left home. In their words: "The house is quiet and I don't know what I'm for any more." Not for: couples wanting joint sessions, anyone in crisis, anyone looking for grief therapy.
  2. The change. In 12 weeks, a client goes from drifting through quiet evenings to running a chosen 90-day project. They leave with a written two-page plan for the next five years and a Sunday planning ritual done at least 10 weeks in a row. Method: values sort, then one 90-day experiment, then a review.
  3. Scope and referral. Coaching only. Jordan refers out for persistent low mood, any mention of self-harm, heavy drinking, or relationship abuse. Referral list: the national crisis line, a directory of local licensed therapists, and a reminder to see their own GP. Jordan follows the ICF Code of Ethics.
  4. Offer ladder. Free: a 20-minute "Quiet House" call and a printable life audit. First step: one 90-minute Next Chapter session at $250. Core: "Next Chapter 12", 8 sessions over 12 weeks plus daily and weekly check-ins, at $1,200 or 3 payments of $400. Continuity: $180 a month for one session plus check-ins. Later: an 8-person cohort, only after 10 clients have finished the core package.
  5. Pricing math. See the table below.
  6. Acquisition. Channel one: a monthly talk at two public libraries and a post in three local parent groups each September and January, when children leave. Channel two: a weekly LinkedIn post and a weekly email to the life audit list. Commitment: 5 personal invitations, 1 post, 1 email and 1 referral ask every week.
  7. Journey. Prospects book the free call from the website and answer four intake questions. Clients sign the agreement and pay before session one. Morning check-ins on weekdays, one weekly reflection, two habits tracked. Week 12: review session, testimonial request, continuity offer.
  8. Tools. One practice platform for booking, payments, agreements, check-ins, website and email. Card processing fees as listed by the processor. Insurance and accounting quoted locally.
  9. Legal and money. Registered as a sole proprietor by 15 November. Separate bank account by 15 November. Tax set-aside percentage agreed with an accountant on 20 November. Liability insurance renewed each November. Notes stored only inside the practice platform; deleted 3 years after the engagement ends unless the client asks sooner.
  10. Milestones. Days 1 to 30: offer page live, agreement reviewed by a lawyer, 20 conversations, 6 consults. Days 31 to 60: 4 paying clients, life audit lead magnet live, first library talk. Days 61 to 90: 8 active clients, 2 testimonials, pricing reviewed.
  11. Weekly numbers. Invitations sent, consults booked and held, clients signed, active clients, check-in completion rate, revenue collected.
StepExample inputResult
12-month gross revenue goal$60,000 (example)$5,000 a month
Core package value per client per month$1,200 over 3 months$400 a month (about $150 per session)
Active clients needed$5,000 ÷ $40013 active clients (12.5 rounded up)
New clients per month13 ÷ 3-month average stayAbout 4 to 5 new clients a month
Consults per monthPlanning on 1 in 3 consults converting (example)About 13 consult calls a month
Coaching hours per week13 clients × 8 sessions over 12 weeksAbout 9 session hours a week, plus check-in review

The table shows why Jordan's continuity offer matters: every client who stays on after week 12 lowers the number of new clients needed each month. It also shows the hours are realistic at 15 a week only once the practice is full, which is why the first 90 days are mostly selling. You can change the inputs in the session rate calculator to test your own numbers before you commit to a price.

Want the client-facing side too? Our life plan template is the kind of worksheet Jordan's clients complete in weeks one to three, and life coaching worksheets has more to put inside the core package.

Which one looks like you?

Coachful builds your coaching website from a few answers, in a design chosen for your niche, with programs, booking and payments ready behind it.

How should you write, share and store your plan and the client documents it creates?

The plan itself can live in any document. What changes the result is where its moving parts live: the offers, intake answers, signed agreements, check-ins and invoices that the plan describes. The table compares the common choices; vendor prices are as listed in October 2026.

If you are still choosing, the question that matters for a life coach is not which tool can store a PDF. It is whether the agreement, the intake answers and the weekly check-ins end up on the same client record you open before each session. When they do, you notice a client going quiet in week five rather than in week eleven. Our coaching forms and questionnaires page covers the intake side in more detail.

How does the plan turn into a working practice in Coachful?

Each section of the template maps to one place in Coachful, so the plan becomes the setup checklist. Coachful is a coaching platform: one subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant, with one login for you and one branded app for your client. It is built for coaches who deliver programs, not just sessions, and for solo coaches who are replacing four to six tools. It is not HIPAA-certified, does not support PayPal and has no permanent free plan. You can start with a free trial, and the team will build your first website, funnel or program for you at no charge.

Here is the order a life coach would set it up in, following the plan section by section. More on how Coachful fits this niche is on the Coachful for life coaches page.

Step 1: Turn the offer ladder into offers

Each rung of section four becomes an offer: the free call, the single session, the 12-week core package and the monthly continuity plan. Payments go through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account, with one-time payments, subscriptions or payment plans, and Coachful charges a 0% platform fee, so only your processor's fees apply. A payment plan is how Jordan's "3 payments" option works in practice. Our coaching packages page shows more ways to structure them.

Coachful Offers page showing three live offer cards with cover photos
The Offers page with demo offers: each rung of your offer ladder becomes one card with its own price and status.

Step 2: Build the acquisition path from section six

A lead-magnet funnel delivers the free worksheet, and a booking funnel sends people to the free call. Funnels support pixels and UTM tracking, so you can see whether the library talks or the LinkedIn posts bring people in. New leads land in Prospects with the form or resource they came from. The coaching funnel software page has the details.

The demo Prospects table: 22 leads with the form or resource they came from and their stage.

Step 3: Add intake questions to the booking page

Booking pages take availability rules, buffers, minimum notice and time-zone detection, and sync both ways with Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook calendars. Add your three to five intake questions to the free call so you arrive knowing the client's transition and goal. Intakes then tracks how many calls you held and how many converted, which is the consult-to-client rate from section five. Here is a short walkthrough of the Intakes screen:

Intakes with demo data: 10 intake calls, 3 upcoming, 2 converted and a 40% conversion rate.

Step 4: Send the agreement before the first call

The coaching agreement from section nine goes out with e-signature before session one and is stored on the client record. If a client signed elsewhere, you can drop the signed PDF onto their Agreements tab so everything stays in one place.

Coachful Agreements tab on a client record with a file drop area for a signed PDF
The Agreements tab on a client record, here empty, with a drop area for an already signed PDF.

Step 5: Schedule sessions and set up between-session work

Sessions run on built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links, with email reminders, plus SMS 24 hours and WhatsApp 1 hour before once messaging is enabled. The 12-week package becomes a program with weekly goals, daily tasks, habits and morning and evening check-ins. This is where section seven of the plan actually happens.

Step 6: See what the client sees

Clients use the coach's branding inside the Coachful app. They see their program and its current week, their habits with streaks, their goals with progress bars and their upcoming sessions. For Jordan's clients, the Sunday planning ritual would be one of these habit cards.

Here is the programs walkthrough, showing how a multi-week program is built and delivered:

Step 7: Invoices and the Friday numbers

Every transaction gets an invoice, and you can create manual invoices too. The Analytics tab shows revenue collected, client activity, funnels, retention and email, which covers most of the weekly numbers in section eleven. Each client's status shows as thriving, active, quiet or at risk, so a client drifting off the plan is visible before they cancel. Michelle, the built-in AI assistant, works from that live practice data and can brief you before each session.

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, choose "We'll build it for you" and describe what you need: a website, a funnel, an offer or sales page, a program, a form or worksheet, an email sequence. You can attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files, and the Coachful team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours. Nothing gets invented: no fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and gaps are left for you to fill. One recent build: a leadership coach with a Squarespace renewal days away got one clean homepage with a repeated "talk with me" button. For a life coach with a finished plan, handing over sections one, two and four is enough for the team to draft the site and the core offer page. Read more about the free white-glove service.

What are the most common mistakes in a life coaching business plan?

The common mistakes are a niche without a life moment, prices set by guesswork, too many offers, and a plan that never gets reviewed. Each one is easy to spot on paper.

  • Coaching "anyone who wants more from life". If your niche fits on a mug, nobody will recognise themselves in it. Name the transition.
  • Pricing by the hour. Hourly pricing invites comparison with therapists and tutors. Price the 12-week change and show the per-session equivalent only to yourself.
  • Five offers on day one. One core offer with one free entry point is easier to sell and easier to improve. Add rungs once the core package has finished clients.
  • No referral list. Writing it during a session where a client mentions self-harm is too late.
  • Acquisition as "post on Instagram". Pick places where your specific people already talk about this transition, and commit to a weekly number of personal invitations.
  • Tool sprawl before clients. Separate booking, payments, e-signature, email, website and course tools add cost and scatter client information. Count the monthly total in section eight.
  • A revenue goal with no client count. Until section five says how many active clients and consults per month, the goal is a wish.
  • Never reviewing it. Put the 90-day review date on your calendar and change whatever the Friday numbers say is broken.

For the client-side version of this kind of planning, see our coaching plan template and coaching action plan template.

Is this template legal, financial or medical advice?

No. This template and the example are general information to help you organise your thinking. They are not legal, tax, financial or medical advice. Laws on business registration, consumer contracts, refunds, data protection and taxes vary by country, state and city. Have a local attorney review your coaching agreement and refund terms before you use them, ask an accountant to set your tax set-aside and structure, and if you plan to work with clients who have health conditions, have a clinician review your referral triggers. Rates quoted here come from aggregated sources and small samples and do not predict what you will earn.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a life coaching business plan be?

One to two pages is enough for a solo life coach who is not seeking a loan or investors. The goal is a document you will reread every week. If a bank or partner asks for a full plan, expand the same eleven sections with a market analysis and financial projections.

What should a life coach charge in their first year?

Published data gives ranges, not a correct answer: PayScale's coaching data puts life coaching around $75 to $200 an hour, and community estimates put new coaches at $50 to $100 per session. Start from your revenue goal and the number of clients you can realistically serve, then check the result sits inside those ranges. Selling a 12-week package rather than single sessions makes the price easier to justify.

How many clients does a life coach need to make a full-time income?

It depends entirely on your price and income goal. In the example above, a $60,000 goal and a $1,200 three-month package need about 13 active clients and roughly 13 consult calls a month. Run your own numbers through section five of the template.

Do I need a certification to start a life coaching business?

Life coaching is not a licensed profession in most places, so a certification is usually not legally required. Many buyers and some employers look for credentials such as the ICF's ACC or PCC, and training improves your coaching. Check your own country's rules, and never present coaching as therapy.

Should my plan include group coaching from the start?

Usually not. Groups are easier to fill once you have finished 1:1 clients, testimonials and a tested method. Put the group cohort on your offer ladder as a later rung with a clear trigger, such as ten completed core clients.

What is the best niche for a life coaching business plan?

The best niche is a life transition you understand well and whose people you can reach directly. Examples include the year after divorce, returning to work after caregiving, or the first year after children leave home. Our guides to starting a life purpose coaching business and a teen life coaching business show two niches worked through.

Where should I keep client agreements and intake answers?

Keep them on the same client record you open before every session, rather than scattered across email and file folders. In Coachful, intake answers from booking and signed agreements are stored on the client record alongside check-ins, habits, notes and payments. Clinical records, if you are also a licensed clinician, belong in a clinical system.

What is Coachful's free white-glove service?

It is a build service included on every Coachful plan: you describe a website, funnel, offer page, program, form or email sequence, attach references, and the Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. It does not include recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing, and nothing is invented, so prices and credentials stay yours to add.

How much does Coachful cost?

Coachful uses flat monthly plans; lower plans cap the number of clients, and Pro is unlimited (current plans: Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients).
