Online Fitness Coach Salary: What Online Trainers Earn

There is no official online fitness coach salary. The nearest government figure is for fitness trainers and instructors, whose median pay was $47,160 a year in May 2025, or $22.67 an hour, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's mostly gym, studio and club employees. An online fitness coach is usually self-employed, so their income is clients times monthly price. Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report has no fitness figure, but its health and wellness data puts app-based programs with a coach check-in at $17 to $149 a month and ongoing one-to-one coaching with sessions and messaging at $300 to $700 a month.
Those two prices produce very different businesses. A coach charging $49 a month needs a crowd; one charging $500 needs a handful of committed clients and the hours to serve them. This guide sets out the BLS benchmark with its caveats, how many online clients it takes to match it, what each online model earns per hour of your time, and what raises the number.
If you'd rather spend the setup week training clients, Coachful's team builds your fitness coaching website and program page for free on every plan.
What the BLS says fitness trainers earn
The BLS page for fitness trainers and instructors is the closest public data to online fitness coaching. Read it as an adjacent, mostly employed occupation, not as online coach income.
| Fitness trainers and instructors (adjacent occupation) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Median pay, May 2025 | $47,160 a year ($22.67 an hour) |
| Lowest 10 percent / highest 10 percent | Under $28,800 / over $83,100 |
| Jobs, 2025 | About 388,400 |
| Self-employed | About 15 percent |
| Projected growth, 2025 to 2035 | 7%, much faster than average |
| Fitness and recreational sports centers, median | $48,140 |
| Educational services, median | $45,350 |
| Civic and social organizations, median | $38,640 |
BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, fetched October 2026. Not a coach salary: these are wages for an adjacent occupation.
Two lines on that page matter for anyone going online. The BLS notes that many workers in the occupation have variable or part-time schedules, which drags the median down. And most trainers hold a certification in their area of fitness, which online clients expect just as gym managers do. Coachful's own rates data has no fitness-specific coach figure, so we haven't invented one.

Why online coaching income is a different number
A gym trainer and an online coach can have the same certification and very different pay mechanics.
- Employed trainer. The gym finds the clients and owns the equipment, and pays you a wage or a per-session rate, often for a schedule you don't fully control.
- Online coach. You find every client, keep the whole fee and pay for marketing, software and payment processing yourself. Your time per client is lower than in-person training, because you're not standing beside every set, so one coach can serve more people.
- Hybrid. In-person sessions for local clients plus online programs for everyone else. It's a sensible way to test online pricing before you rely on it.
Our guide on how to become an online fitness coach covers the certification and the models in full. Here we stay with the money.
How many online clients match a trainer's salary
Using three monthly price points from Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report, here's how many paying clients, kept all year, it takes to match the BLS median and the top 10 percent threshold.
| Yearly revenue to match | At $149 a month | At $300 a month | At $500 a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| $47,160 (BLS median) | 27 clients | 14 clients | 8 clients |
| $83,100 (BLS top 10 percent threshold) | 47 clients | 24 clients | 14 clients |
Our arithmetic: target divided by twelve monthly fees, rounded up, revenue before costs and tax. $149 is the top of the report's app-with-coach range; $300 and $500 sit inside its range for monthly one-to-one coaching.
That's revenue, and the BLS figure is a wage. To compare fairly, an online coach also has to cover the IRS's 15.3% self-employment tax on net earnings, insurance, software, payment fees and the months when a client pauses. Add a margin to the client counts before you plan around them.
Churn is the bigger variable. Online fitness clients often buy for a goal, a race or a wedding, and stop when it's done. If a quarter of your clients leave each quarter, keeping 14 on the books means finding three or four new ones every three months. For more on keeping a roster full, see how many clients make a full roster.

Income per hour of your time, by online model
Monthly price only tells half the story. What matters is revenue per hour of coach time, and that depends on the model. The figures below are illustrations: the prices sit inside the report's ranges, and the time per client is an assumption you should replace with your own.
| Model | Price (from the report's ranges) | Assumed coach time | Revenue per coach hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live one-to-one video sessions | $75 a session | One hour per session | About $75 |
| Monthly coaching with a custom program and weekly check-in | $300 a month | About one hour a week per client | About $69 |
| App-delivered program with a coach check-in | $49 a month | About 15 minutes a week per client | About $45 |
| Eight-week group program | $500 a person, 12 people | Three hours a week for eight weeks | About $250 |
Our arithmetic. Monthly prices divided by the assumed hours in an average month (4.33 weeks). Group: $6,000 divided by 24 hours. Prices from Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report: $75 to $200 a session and $300 to $700 a month for health and wellness coaching, $17 to $149 a month for app-based programs with a coach, and $500 to $3,000 per person for group programs of 8 to 20.
The group row is why so many online coaches add a cohort. It's also the hardest to fill, since twelve people have to start on the same date. The app row looks weak per hour, but it's the only one that scales past the number of hours in your week, if you can sell it to enough people. Our guide on pricing app-only and live-call tiers shows how to put two of these models side by side without one undercutting the other.

What raises an online fitness coach's income
- A specific client. "Strength for busy parents" or "first marathon in six months" is easier to sell at $300 a month than "online personal training." The person can picture the result and the timeline.
- A defined program, then a monthly continuation. A twelve-week program sells the goal; a monthly plan afterwards keeps the client training. Our guide on creating an online fitness coaching program covers the twelve weeks.
- A group alongside one-to-one. Even one cohort a quarter changes the per-hour figures above.
- Retention habits. Weekly check-ins, visible progress and a quick reply when a client misses a week do more for income than a rate rise.
- Staying in scope. Programming and coaching are a trainer's work. Medical rehab, diagnosis and individualized diets for medical conditions belong with licensed professionals, and pricing as if you provide them is a risk you don't need.

The costs that come out first
Before revenue becomes pay, take out the 15.3 percent self-employment tax plus income tax, liability insurance, certification renewal and continuing education, software, music or exercise-video licenses if you use them, and card processing. Then count the unpaid hours: writing programs, filming demos, reviewing logs and answering messages. Frequently asked questions
How much do online fitness coaches make?
No source measures online fitness coaches directly. The closest benchmark is the BLS median for fitness trainers and instructors, $47,160 in May 2025, which is mostly employed gym and studio staff. A self-employed online coach earns clients times price: 14 clients at $300 a month is about $50,400 a year before costs and tax.
How much do online personal trainers charge per month?
Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report puts app-based programs with a coach check-in at $17 to $149 a month and ongoing one-to-one coaching with sessions and messaging at $300 to $700 a month, from its health and wellness data. Where you sit depends on how much of your time the client gets.
How many clients does an online fitness coach need to make $100,000?
At $500 a month, 17 clients kept all year. At $300 a month, 28. At $149, 56. Those are revenue figures before tax and costs, and they assume nobody leaves, so most coaches plan for more clients or a group program on top.
Do online fitness coaches make more than gym trainers?
They can, because they keep the whole fee and can serve more clients per hour, but they also carry every cost and find every client. The BLS reports that the top 10 percent of trainers and instructors earn over $83,100, a level an online coach reaches at about 14 clients paying $500 a month.
Is online fitness coaching a good career?
The BLS projects 7 percent growth for fitness trainers and instructors from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, and about 15 percent are already self-employed. Online income depends on picking a specific client, keeping them past the first program and adding a group or app tier.
Should an online fitness coach charge per session or per month?
Per month suits most online models, because the work happens between sessions: programming, log reviews and check-ins. Per session suits live video training. At $75 a session, matching the BLS median takes about 629 paid sessions a year, roughly 14 a week, so many coaches pair a few live sessions with a monthly program instead.
Does certification affect what an online fitness coach earns?
The BLS notes that most fitness trainers hold a certification in their specialty, and online clients tend to expect one too. No public data isolates its effect on online income. In practice it decides who will hire you and protects you on scope; price is set more by your niche and results.
Will Coachful build my fitness coaching website for free?
Yes. Coachful's team builds fitness coaching websites, program pages and first offers for free on every plan, inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. Coachful is a paid membership; the build costs nothing extra. You record your own workout videos.
