Skool vs Thinkific for Coaches: 2026 Pricing and Features

Skool vs Thinkific for Coaches: 2026 Pricing and Features

Skool vs Thinkific comes down to what you sell. Skool is a community with a classroom attached: one group, one feed, a course area and a calendar, at $9 or $99 a month plus a transaction fee on every sale (as listed in October 2026). Thinkific is a course school with communities attached: polished course building, quizzes, certificates and memberships, from $109 a month on its Start plan. If your offer is a paid community, Skool is simpler. If your offer is a library of courses, Thinkific is deeper. If your offer is coaching (1:1 sessions, agreements, programs with habits and check-ins), neither was built for it, and that is where a coaching platform fits better.

We make Coachful, a coaching platform, so we have a stake in this comparison. We have kept the vendor facts to what Skool and Thinkific publish on their own pricing and help pages, dated October 2026, and we say plainly where each of them beats us.

What is the short answer by use case?

Pick Skool for a paid community with light courses, Thinkific for a course business, and a coaching platform for client work that runs on sessions and programs. Here is the breakdown by the kind of coach asking the question.

  • You run a paid community or mastermind with a few courses inside: Skool. It puts the feed, classroom and calendar in one place, members get gamified levels and leaderboards, and pricing is two plans.
  • You sell several self-paced courses, certificates or a membership library: Thinkific. Unlimited courses, quizzes, certificates, bundles, payment plans and a custom domain are on its entry plan.
  • You coach clients 1:1 or in small groups and sell packages: neither fits well. Skool has no 1:1 client records, intake forms, habits or check-ins. Thinkific has no built-in 1:1 scheduling and no per-client plans. A coaching platform such as Coachful covers booking, payments, agreements and program delivery in one login.
  • You want a branded website and email funnels: Thinkific gets you a custom domain site; Skool has no custom-domain website, funnels or email automation. Coachful includes a website builder, funnels and email sequences.
  • You are just testing an idea on a small budget: Skool Hobby at $9 a month is the cheapest entry, but its 10% + 30¢ fee on every sale gets expensive quickly once money comes in.

How do Skool and Thinkific compare side by side?

The table compares the three platforms on the things coaches ask about most. Our ranking criteria, stated up front: one login for the whole client journey, delivery between sessions, total stack cost, and setup effort (including whether someone will build it for you).

The quick read: Skool and Thinkific each do one thing well and treat coaching as a side product. If your income comes from clients rather than course buyers, keep reading the feature sections before you commit to either. Our Coachful vs Skool comparison and Thinkific alternative page go deeper on each.

How much do Skool and Thinkific cost in 2026?

Skool costs $9 a month (Hobby) or $99 a month (Pro); Thinkific's public plans start at $109 a month (Start), with Grow at $219 and Expand at $499, as listed in October 2026. The plan price is only half the story, because Skool takes a cut of every sale and Thinkific charges for the branded app separately.

Skool pricing details

Skool lists two plans with the same features. The difference is the fee: Hobby charges 10% + 30¢ on every transaction, Pro charges 2.9% + 30¢ on transactions up to $899 and 3.9% + 30¢ above $900. Skool's help center states these fees are non-refundable, and payouts go out weekly on Wednesdays in your local currency. Payments run only through Skool Payments, so you cannot plug in your own Stripe account. Yearly billing is advertised as "2 months free", and each community is a separate subscription, so a coach running a free lead community and a paid client community pays twice. The "Try for free" buttons do not state a trial length or card requirement on the pricing page today. Our Skool pricing breakdown walks through more scenarios.

Thinkific pricing details

Thinkific raised prices by about 10% on August 13, 2026: Start went from $99 to $109 a month and Grow from $199 to $219. A new Expand plan sits at $499, and the cheaper Basic plan is no longer on the public pricing page. Paying yearly saves 25%. There is a 30-day free trial on every self-serve plan. Thinkific charges no transaction fee when you use Thinkific Payments, at a processing rate it describes as in line with other processors at 2.9%; if you connect Stripe or PayPal instead, an extra per-plan gateway fee applies. The branded mobile app is a $199 a month add-on (included only on select Plus contracts). More detail is in our Thinkific pricing guide.

What does a year actually cost? A worked example

Here is an illustrative example, not a quote: a coach who sells $1,000 a month ($12,000 a year) through 40 transactions of $300 each.

  • Skool Hobby: $108 in plan fees plus 10% of $12,000 ($1,200) plus 40 × 30¢ ($12) = about $1,320 a year.
  • Skool Pro: $1,188 in plan fees plus 2.9% of $12,000 ($348) plus $12 = about $1,548 a year. Pro beats Hobby once monthly sales pass roughly $1,270, because the fee gap is 7.1 points.
  • Thinkific Start: $1,308 in plan fees plus about 2.9% processing on Thinkific Payments ($348) = about $1,656 a year, before any per-transaction fixed fee, and before the $199 a month app add-on if you want a branded app.

Then add whatever you pay for the tools neither covers for coaching: a scheduler, an e-signature tool, an email platform and, for Skool, a website. That stack cost is the number to compare against a coaching platform with a flat subscription and no platform fee on sales (current plans: Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients).

Which is better for community: Skool or Thinkific?

Skool. Community is the product, and it shows: the feed sits at the center of the group, members earn points and levels, and leaderboards reward people who post and help others. That gamification is the main reason coaches pick Skool, and it is a real strength for masterminds and peer groups where engagement is the point.

Skool also has a public discovery side, so a group can be found by people browsing for communities, which some coaches use as a free acquisition channel. Thinkific does not document anything comparable on its pricing page.

Thinkific's community is solid but secondary. The Start plan includes one community with up to 10 spaces and 5 live community events; Grow raises that to 3 communities and 20 spaces. It works well as a discussion area attached to courses, less well as the main reason people pay you.

Where both stop: neither gives you private 1:1 spaces per client tied to a coaching record, and neither creates cohort groups automatically when someone enrolls in a program. If you want community to support coaching rather than replace it, see our guide on hosting client masterminds without Skool and the group coaching software page.

Which is better for courses?

Thinkific, clearly. Its entry plan includes unlimited courses, digital downloads, quizzes, certificates, bundles, upsells, payment plans, memberships and live cohorts with Zoom. Grow adds exams and question banks, B2B sales with invoicing, and an API with webhooks. Plus adds an AI teaching assistant, SSO, SCORM and learning paths on custom contracts.

Thinkific's homepage in October 2026.

Skool's classroom is simpler: you can host unlimited courses and videos, which suits a community where lessons support discussion. If you need assessments, certificates or a large catalog with bundles, Skool will feel thin. If you need a handful of modules for members, it is enough.

For coaches, the deciding question is whether a course is your product or a support tool for your clients. If it is a support tool, you want lessons delivered inside the same place clients do their homework and see their sessions, which neither platform does. Our Thinkific review and Skool review cover each course area in more detail.

Can you run 1:1 coaching on Skool or Thinkific?

Only with extra tools. Skool has a group calendar for events and live calls, but no 1:1 booking pages, client records, intake forms, habits or check-ins. Thinkific sells coaching and webinar products, but it has no built-in 1:1 scheduling; coaching relies on external booking links.

In practice, a coach on either platform ends up running a separate scheduler, a separate e-signature tool for coaching agreements, and a spreadsheet or notes app for client progress. That is the stack many coaches are trying to get away from.

Here is what the same job looks like on a coaching platform. In Coachful, booking pages handle availability rules, buffers, minimum notice and time-zone detection, with two-way Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook sync, built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet and Teams links, and intake questions on booking. Paid sessions and session credits are built in. This short walkthrough shows the scheduling side:

Coachful's sessions calendar with demo 1:1 coaching, accountability calls and group sessions color-coded for September 2026.

Coaching agreements are another gap. Neither Skool nor Thinkific sends a contract for e-signature before the first call. In Coachful, the agreement goes out before the first session and is stored on the client record. See coaching contracts and scheduling software for how that works.

How do payments and fees compare?

Thinkific gives you more payment options; Skool gives you fewer, with a fee on every sale. On Skool, every payment runs through Skool Payments, and both plans carry a per-transaction fee. On Thinkific, you can use Thinkific Payments with no Thinkific transaction fee, or connect Stripe or PayPal and pay an additional gateway fee.

Thinkific also supports bundles, upsells and payment plans on Start, and B2B invoicing from Grow. Skool's model is simpler: members pay a subscription or one-time price to join the group or unlock a course.

For coaches who sell packages, payment plans and add-ons, there is a third model: connect your own Stripe or Razorpay account and pay only processing. Coachful supports one-time payments, subscriptions, payment plans, order bumps, coupons, refunds, Apple Pay and Google Pay, Stripe Tax, an invoice per transaction and manual invoices, with a 0% Coachful platform fee since August 2026. Coachful does not support PayPal, which matters if your buyers expect it. Read more on coaching payment software.

Which one looks like you?

Coachful builds your coaching website from a few answers, in a design chosen for your niche, with programs, booking and payments ready behind it.

Build your platform

Which gives you a better website, email and marketing setup?

Thinkific, of the two. It includes a custom domain on Start, so your school can live on your own web address. Skool gives you a custom URL inside Skool, but no custom-domain website, no funnels, no email automation and no public API, so most Skool coaches pair it with a separate site and email tool.

Neither is a marketing suite. If your sales process depends on a lead magnet, an email sequence and a booking call, you will need extra tools with both. Coachful includes a section-based website builder with a blog, custom domain, SEO settings, 30 designed homepage templates and an import option, plus booking, application, lead-magnet and checkout funnels with pixel and UTM tracking, and email broadcasts and multi-step sequences with triggers, delays, branching and A/B splits. What is the client experience like on each platform?

On Skool, a client joins a group and lands in a feed. That is great for belonging and terrible for "what should I do this week?", because there is no private plan, no habit tracker and no place where their sessions, notes and documents live. On Thinkific, a client logs into a school and sees courses, certificates and any community spaces. The branded mobile app costs $199 a month extra.

Both experiences are built around content and conversation, not around an individual client's progress. For course buyers and community members, that is fine. For coaching clients, the gaps show up between sessions: no daily check-ins, no habits, no goals with progress bars, no reminders tied to their program.

A coaching platform flips the default. In Coachful, the client opens one branded home (on the web and in the Coachful app under your branding) and sees their next session, pre-session tasks, programs, progress and documents. Daily tasks, habits, morning and evening check-ins and streaks keep them moving between calls, and you see a status for each client (thriving, active, quiet or at risk) so you know who needs a nudge.

What about data export, support and reviews?

Exporting is limited on both. Skool lets you export members to CSV (name, email, join date and membership answers), but posts, DMs and course progress are not exportable, according to our earlier profile of the platform. Thinkific exports students and your email list to CSV, while course content has to be downloaded manually. If you might switch later, plan for that now; our guides on migrating from Skool and migrating from Thinkific cover the steps.

Public reviews are rough for both. On Trustpilot, Skool showed 1.6 from 54 reviews and Thinkific showed 1.8 from 868 reviews on October 25, 2026. Unhappy buyers are often more likely to post than happy ones, so treat these as a prompt to read recent reviews yourself rather than a verdict. Skool was not listed on G2 or Capterra in our earlier profile. Thinkific offers phone and priority chat support from the Grow plan.

For comparison, Coachful offers a full client data export as a ZIP (roster, notes, check-ins, goals, habits, sessions and form responses) plus course export, and shows 4.5 on Trustpilot from 21 reviews, also a small sample.

Which should you pick for your kind of coaching?

Match the platform to how you earn. Here is how the three line up for common coaching models.

Is there a third option that beats both for coaches?

Yes, if your business is coaching rather than courses or community alone. Coachful puts booking, payments, agreements, program delivery, courses, community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant into one subscription, with one login for you and one branded app for your clients.

What Coachful is, who it is for, and how to start

What it is: a coaching platform built for coaches who deliver programs, not just sessions, for solo coaches growing into a small team, and for coaches replacing 4 to 6 separate tools. What it does: multi-week programs with weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, morning and evening check-ins and streaks; booking with calendar sync and reminders; payments through your own Stripe or Razorpay account; e-signed coaching agreements; courses with drip and completion tracking; a community with group chat, DMs, video events and automatic cohort groups; a website, funnels and email sequences. What it does not do: it is not HIPAA-certified, has no PayPal and no permanent free plan, is not a course marketplace, and the client app ships under the Coachful listing with your branding rather than under your own App Store account. How to start: take a free trial, and ask the team to build your setup for you through the free white-glove service.

Programs and between-session delivery are where Coachful pulls furthest ahead of both. A client enrolled in a 12-week program gets weekly goals and daily tasks, checks in each morning and evening, and joins a cohort group created automatically on enrollment. Coachful's courses sit inside the same client home, so lessons are part of the program rather than a separate login.

Michelle, the built-in AI assistant, works from your live practice data: it builds programs, drafts emails and content, summarizes recorded sessions and briefs you before each session. Questions and planning are included in your Coachful membership; confirmed builds and changes use AI credits. There is also ICF credential tracking that counts hours and distinct clients against ACC, PCC and MCC thresholds. See the AI coaching assistant and ICF hour tracking pages.

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, a coach can choose "We'll build it for you · FREE" and describe what they want: a website, funnel, offer page, program, course outline, email sequence, form, lead quiz and more, with up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files. The Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours, and does not invent credentials, testimonials or prices; gaps are left for you to fill. One recent example: a somatic coach leaving Kajabi had their homepage and About page rebuilt and the contact form connected. Another: a business mentor for beauty professionals got a 12-week mentorship sales page, a free start-up-guide funnel and rewritten follow-up emails. The service does not cover recording videos, logo design or ad management. Read more about the free white-glove service.

Pick Skool over Coachful if...

Your product is the community itself, you want gamified levels and leaderboards as the engine, you hope to be found through Skool's discovery listing, and you do not need 1:1 booking, agreements or client records. Skool's two-plan pricing is also easier to explain to yourself, as long as the fee on sales fits your margins.

Pick Thinkific over Coachful if...

You sell a large course catalog to thousands of students, need certificates, exams and question banks, sell to companies with B2B invoicing, or need SCORM and SSO on a Plus contract. Thinkific is a deeper course platform; Coachful's courses are built to support coaching, not to run a training academy. You should also look elsewhere if you need PayPal, a HIPAA-compliant system for clinical records, or an app under your own App Store account.

Frequently asked questions

Is Skool or Thinkific better for coaches?

It depends on what you sell. Skool is better for a paid community with a few courses; Thinkific is better for a course catalog. For 1:1 or program-based coaching, neither has built-in 1:1 booking, client records, habits or check-ins, so a coaching platform is usually the better fit.

Is Skool cheaper than Thinkific?

On plan price, yes: Skool is $9 or $99 a month, Thinkific Start is $109 a month, as listed in October 2026. But Skool takes 10% + 30¢ per sale on Hobby and 2.9% + 30¢ (3.9% above $900) on Pro, so total cost depends on your sales volume. Run your own numbers using the worked example above.

Does Thinkific have a community like Skool?

Yes, but it is secondary. Thinkific Start includes one community with 10 spaces and 5 live community events; Grow raises that to 3 communities. It lacks Skool's gamified levels and leaderboards and has no public discovery listing.

Can I book 1:1 sessions in Skool or Thinkific?

Not natively. Skool has a group calendar for events, and Thinkific's coaching products rely on external booking links. Most coaches add a separate scheduler, which means another login and another bill.

Can I use my own Stripe account with Skool?

No. Skool processes payments only through Skool Payments, with weekly Wednesday payouts. Thinkific lets you connect Stripe or PayPal, with an extra gateway fee, or use Thinkific Payments with no Thinkific transaction fee.

Does Skool or Thinkific have a free trial?

Thinkific offers a 30-day free trial on every self-serve plan. Skool shows "Try for free" buttons, but its pricing page and help FAQ do not state a trial length or card requirement today. Neither has a permanent free plan.

Can I move from Skool or Thinkific to another platform later?

Yes, with some manual work. Skool exports members to CSV but not posts, DMs or course progress; Thinkific exports students and emails to CSV, while course content is downloaded manually. Coachful imports clients, programs and content for you during onboarding.

What is Coachful's free white-glove service?

It is a done-for-you build available on every plan. You describe what you need (a website, funnel, program, course outline, email sequence and more), attach references, and the Coachful team builds it in your account, usually within about 24 hours. It does not include video recording, logo design or ad management.

Is Coachful HIPAA-compliant?

No. Coachful is not HIPAA-certified and does not sign a BAA, so it is not for clinical record-keeping or insurance billing. Health coaches who also provide clinical care should keep those records in a clinical system.

Which is best for a fitness or health coach?

Neither Skool nor Thinkific tracks workouts, nutrition or check-ins per client. Coachful's Fitness & Nutrition pack adds a workout builder, nutrition targets, meal plans, progress photos and weekly check-ins. Coaching is not medical treatment, so refer clients with medical red flags to a doctor; see our Skool alternatives for fitness coaches.
