How to Start a Mindset Coaching Business: A 90-Day Plan

How to Start a Mindset Coaching Business: A 90-Day Plan

Here is how to start a mindset coaching business: choose one type of client and one pattern you help them change, package that work into a 12-week offer with a clear outcome, set your price from an income target and your real capacity, register the business and protect it with an agreement and insurance, put booking, payments, programs and email in one place, then sign your first 10 clients through conversations rather than ads. The plan below spreads that work across 90 days, with tables you can copy.

This guide assumes you have already decided to coach. If you are still weighing training, credentials and what the work involves, read how to become a mindset coach first, and what mindset coaching is if you want the methods and evidence. Here we build the business around your coaching. We make Coachful, the coaching platform we recommend as the home for it, and we say plainly where it fits and where it does not.

What are the steps to start a mindset coaching business?

There are eight steps, and most of them cost time rather than money. The order matters: decide who you serve and what you sell before you build a website, because the offer shapes every page, form and email you set up later.

StepTimeTypical cost
1. Pick one client and one pattern you help them change1 week$0
2. Design 2 or 3 offers with a clear outcome1 week$0
3. Set prices from your income target and capacity1 to 2 days$0
4. Choose a business structure and get an EIN (US)1 to 2 weeksEIN is free from the IRS; state LLC fees vary
5. Coaching agreement, insurance and privacy policy1 to 2 weeksInsurance is quote-based; attorney review is optional but wise
6. Set up your platform: website, booking, payments, programs, email2 to 7 daysOne monthly software membership (see the cost table below)
7. Sign your first 10 clients4 to 10 weeksMostly your time
8. Deliver, measure progress, ask for renewals and referralsOngoingCard processing fees per payment

If you are starting from zero in another niche as well, our general guide to starting a coaching business covers the same skeleton. Everything below is specific to mindset work.

Is mindset coaching a viable business niche?

Yes, if you can name who pays and what changes for them. "Mindset" on its own is too broad to sell; "helping new managers stop freezing before they speak up in leadership meetings" is something a specific person can recognise, budget for and say yes to.

Who actually pays for mindset coaching?

  • Professionals paying from their own pocket. People stuck on confidence, imposter feelings, procrastination or a career move they keep postponing. They pay when the cost of staying stuck is concrete: a missed promotion, a business they have not launched.
  • Founders and freelancers. Money mindset, pricing fear, visibility and consistency. This group overlaps with business coaching, so be clear you work on the internal side. Our money mindset coaching framework shows what that work can look like.
  • Employers and team leads. Some buy coaching for managers or run workshops on resilience and growth mindset. Sales cycles are longer, but one contract can fund several months.
  • Athletes, performers and students. Performance pressure, focus and recovery from setbacks, often paid for by the person or a parent.

How do you check demand before you build anything?

We are not going to quote a market-size figure we cannot verify. A better test is your own evidence, gathered in two weeks:

  1. Write down 30 people who match your client description and whom you could message today.
  2. Ask 10 of them for a 20-minute conversation about the problem (not your offer). Note the exact words they use.
  3. Look for the same problem in public places: questions in professional communities, comments under posts, podcast episode titles in your niche.
  4. At the end of each conversation, describe your planned program in two sentences and ask, "If this existed next month, would you want details?"

If at least three people say yes and ask about price, the niche is worth building. If nobody does, change the client or the pattern before you spend money.

Thinking of launching your coaching business?

Answer a few questions and Coachful builds it around you: your website, programs, booking and payments. Ready in minutes.

Build your platform

What is in scope, and when do you refer?

Mindset coaching works with goals, beliefs, habits and behaviour for people who are functioning well enough to act on what you discuss. It is not therapy or medical treatment, and it is not a substitute for care for depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, eating disorders, addiction or any other mental health condition.

Put a scope line in three places: your website, your intake form and your coaching agreement. For example: "Coaching is not therapy, counselling or medical care. If you are receiving mental health treatment, please tell me and keep working with your provider." Then decide in advance when you refer out: persistent low mood that disrupts daily life, panic attacks, trauma memories surfacing in sessions, self-harm or thoughts of suicide, or dependence on alcohol or drugs. Keep a short list of licensed professionals and local crisis lines (in the US, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) so you are never searching in the moment.

There is no single coaching licence to apply for, and ICF credentials are voluntary. Training still matters for the quality of your work and for client trust; the how to become a mindset coach guide covers that side so we will not repeat it here.

Who is your client, and what will you sell them?

Write one sentence: I help [specific person] go from [pattern] to [observable outcome] in [time frame]. Then build two or three offers around it, each a different depth of the same promise.

Some examples of sentences that sell, because a reader can picture themselves in them:

  • "I help first-time managers go from second-guessing every decision to leading their weekly meeting with a plan, in 12 weeks."
  • "I help freelancers who undercharge raise their rates and send the proposal without rewriting it five times, in 8 weeks."
  • "I help women returning to work after a career break rebuild confidence and land interviews, in 90 days."

Your method sits underneath the sentence. Many mindset coaches combine belief work with practical exercises; see our pieces on growth mindset interventions, fixed to growth mindset exercises and somatic mindset coaching techniques for material you can turn into program weeks.

Three example packages

  1. Signature 1:1 program (12 weeks). Six or twelve video sessions, a short daily check-in, two or three habits (for example a morning thought record and an evening win log), weekly goals and messaging between sessions. This is your main offer and should carry most of your income.
  2. Group cohort (8 weeks). One live group call a week, a short course module before each call, a private community for the cohort and the same daily check-in. Lower price per person, more people, less of your time per client.
  3. Entry offer. A 90-minute "pattern reset" session with a written plan afterwards, or a self-paced mini course with one call. Its job is to let people experience your coaching and move into the signature program, not to fund the business on its own.
Coachful Offers page with three live offer cards and their prices
The Offers page in a Coachful demo account, with three live offers such as a monthly 1:1 offer and a 90-Day Transformation (demo data).

Name offers by outcome rather than format. "Lead Without Second-Guessing" sells better than "12-Week Coaching Package", and our page on building coaching packages has more structures to borrow.

How should you price mindset coaching?

Price from your numbers, not from a guess about what others charge. Start with the monthly income you need, decide how many client hours you can deliver well each week, then work out what each offer must cost to hit the target. Check your result against what comparable coaches in your niche list publicly before you commit.

The table below uses example figures only. They are not market rates; they show how the math works for a target of $6,000 a month in gross revenue.

Offer mix (illustrative)Example priceClients needed for $6,000/monthExample weekly delivery time
1:1 signature program only$600/month for 3 months10 active clientsAbout 10 call hours plus prep and messaging
Group cohort only$480 per 8-week cohort ($240/month)25 members2 call hours plus community time
Hybrid: 1:1 plus group6 x $600 + 10 x $24016 clientsAbout 8 call hours plus community time
Entry sessions only$150 per session40 sessions a monthAbout 15 hours of calls plus constant selling

The last row is why entry offers should feed a program rather than be the business: 40 new people a month is a marketing job, not a coaching practice. The hybrid row usually gives the best balance of income, time and client results.

Then subtract what comes off the top:

  • Card processing fees on every payment (your processor's published rates).
  • Software and insurance, covered in the cost table further down.
  • Self-employment tax (US). The IRS sets self-employment tax at 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare), due once net earnings from self-employment reach $400. For 2026, the Social Security part applies up to $184,500 of earnings, per Form 1040-ES (2026).
  • Income tax, which depends on your situation. Check with an accountant before you set prices so you know your real take-home.

Offer a payment plan on the signature program (for example, three monthly payments) and price the plan slightly above paying in full. A plan makes a bigger commitment possible for the client without lowering your rate.

What legal setup does a mindset coaching business need?

At minimum: a business structure, a tax ID if you are in the US, any local licences, professional liability insurance, a written coaching agreement, a privacy policy and honest marketing. None of it is complicated, but skipping it turns a small problem into an expensive one. The US sources below are official; outside the US, ask a local accountant or attorney for the equivalents.

Business structure

The SBA describes a sole proprietorship as automatic if you do business without registering another structure, and "a good choice for low-risk businesses and owners who want to test their business idea." The trade-off is personal liability for business debts. An LLC protects owners from personal liability "in most instances", and profits can pass through to you, though LLC members still pay self-employment tax. An S corp is a tax election (Form 2553) that some coaches make later, once profits are steady. A common path is to start as a sole proprietor and form an LLC once clients are paying; ask an accountant which fits you.

EIN and taxes

  • EIN. The IRS issues an employer identification number online "in minutes for free"; you never pay a fee for one. If you form an LLC, do that with your state first.
  • Schedule C. Sole proprietors report business profit or loss on Schedule C (Form 1040).
  • Estimated taxes. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file, you generally need to make estimated tax payments. The last payment for 2026 is due January 15, 2027, and it is not required if you file your 2026 return by February 1, 2027 and pay the full balance.

Licences and permits

The SBA notes that "most small businesses need a combination of licenses and permits" and that requirements depend on your activity and location. Check your Secretary of State and city or county sites for a general business licence or home-business rules, using the SBA's licences and permits guidance as a starting point.

Insurance

Of the six common types the SBA lists, professional liability insurance is the one to price first: it is meant for businesses that provide services and "protects against financial loss as a result of malpractice, errors, and negligence." Ask insurers specifically about coaching, and tell them you work with mindset and confidence topics so the policy matches your scope. The SBA also notes that an LLC's protection of personal property "has limits", which is why insurance and an entity are not either-or.

Coaching agreement

Your agreement should cover the scope line from earlier, confidentiality and its limits (for example, risk of harm), session length and rescheduling, cancellation and refund terms, payment plans, what happens if the client misses payments, recording of sessions, and the fact that results are not guaranteed. Have it signed before the first call. Our page on coaching contracts walks through e-signature and storage.

Coachful Agreements tab with a drop area for signed PDFs
The Agreements tab on a client record, empty in this demo, with a drop area for a signed PDF.

Data and privacy

Mindset clients share personal material. Collect only what you need, keep notes factual, and publish a privacy policy that says what you store and why. If you coach anyone in the EU or UK, GDPR applies to you; check the details with an attorney. Do not keep clinical records: if a conversation turns into treatment, that is the moment to refer.

Marketing rules

The FTC's Endorsement Guides say testimonials must be honest and must reflect the endorser's real opinion, and that exceptional results need proof they are typical, or a clear statement of what people generally achieve. The Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, in effect since October 21, 2024, bans fake reviews and incentives tied to positive sentiment. If you coach money mindset or business confidence, be especially careful with income promises: the FTC's Notice of Penalty Offenses on money-making opportunities was sent to businesses including business coaching, and it treats misrepresented or untypical earnings claims as deceptive. Finally, every marketing email needs a working unsubscribe link and your physical postal address under CAN-SPAM, with opt-outs honoured within 10 business days.

What tech stack do you need, and why make Coachful the home?

You need seven jobs covered: a website, booking, payments and invoices, agreements, program delivery between sessions, email, and a place for group clients to talk. Mindset coaching makes the fifth job the most important, because change happens in the days between calls, not in the call itself.

What Coachful is. Coachful is a coaching platform. One subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant, with one login for the coach and one branded app for the client. It is built for coaches who deliver programs, not just sessions, for solo coaches growing into a small team, and for coaches replacing four to six tools. It does not do everything: it is not HIPAA-certified and offers no BAA, so it is not for clinical record-keeping or insurance billing; it does not take PayPal; the client app ships under the Coachful listing with your branding rather than under your own App Store account; and there is no permanent free plan. To start, sign up for a free trial and request the free white-glove build described below.

What the pieces do for a mindset practice

  • Programs. Multi-week programs with weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, morning and evening check-ins, goals with progress bars and streaks. This is where a thought record or win log lives.
  • Client records. Goals, check-ins, habits, notes, intake answers, tags, payments and sessions on one page, with a status of thriving, active, quiet or at risk, so you notice a client drifting before they cancel.
  • Michelle, the built-in AI assistant. Works from your live practice data: builds programs, drafts emails and content, summarises recorded sessions and briefs you before each session. It can also give you private feedback on your own coaching against ICF Core Competencies 3 to 8. Questions and planning are included in your Coachful membership; confirmed builds and changes use AI credits. See the AI coaching assistant page.
  • AI Coach. An AI version of you that selected clients can chat with between sessions, configured by you.
  • ICF hour tracking. Counts coaching hours and distinct clients against ACC, PCC and MCC thresholds and exports an ICF client coaching log. Useful if you plan to apply for a credential; see ICF hour tracking.

Here is a short walkthrough of how programs are built and delivered:

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. On every plan, you can ask the Coachful team to build things for you inside your own account. From Create, choose "We'll build it for you", describe what you want (a website, a funnel, a sales page, a program, a course outline and written material, an email sequence, a lead quiz, a form or worksheet, and more), and attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files such as your logo, photos and existing copy. The team usually delivers within about 24 hours. Nothing is invented: no fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and gaps are left for you to fill. It does not include recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing. One recent example: a menopause and midlife health coach starting from nothing got a five-page site in sage and cream with every button leading to a free 20-minute consultation. Another: a leadership coach with a Squarespace renewal days away got one clean homepage with a repeated "talk with me" button. Read more about the white-glove build service.

How do you set up your website, booking and payments?

Build the smallest site that turns a stranger into a booked discovery call, connect booking with intake questions, and take payment the moment someone says yes. You can do all three in a weekend, or have the white-glove team draft them.

Which one looks like you?

Coachful builds your coaching website from a few answers, in a design chosen for your niche, with programs, booking and payments ready behind it.

Build your platform

Website: five pages are enough

  1. Home. Your one-sentence promise, who it is for, three signs the reader is in the right place, and one button: "Book a free 20-minute call".
  2. About. Why you coach this pattern, your training, and your scope line.
  3. Work With Me. Your two or three offers with outcomes, format and price or "from" price.
  4. Results. Leave this empty until you have real, permitted client words. Never write placeholder testimonials.
  5. Contact, plus a privacy policy.

Coachful's section-based website builder includes a blog, custom domain, SEO settings, 30 designed homepage templates and an Import website option if you already have a site. Templates like Hearth suit the warm, personal tone most mindset coaches want. More on the coaching website page.

Booking

Create one free discovery call type (20 to 30 minutes) and one paid session type. Set availability rules, buffers between calls and a minimum notice period, and let time-zone detection handle clients in other regions. Add three intake questions to the discovery booking: what they want to change, what they have already tried, and what makes now the right time. Coachful syncs two ways with Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook calendars, creates a built-in video room or a Zoom, Meet or Teams link automatically, and sends email reminders, plus SMS 24 hours before and WhatsApp 1 hour before once messaging is enabled.

Payments

Connect your own Stripe (or Razorpay) account. You can sell one-time payments, subscriptions and payment plans, add order bumps and coupons, issue refunds, accept Apple Pay and Google Pay, and use Stripe Tax. Every transaction produces an invoice, and you can send manual invoices too. Coachful takes no platform fee on your sales (since August 2026); you pay only Stripe or Razorpay processing. Agreements with e-signature go out before the first call and are stored on the client record.

How do you get your first 10 mindset coaching clients?

Through direct conversations with people who already know you or already gather in one place. Ads and SEO are slow and expensive when you have no proof yet, so aim your first 60 days at a list of 50 names, two or three workshops and a handful of referral partners.

Channels that suit mindset coaching

  • Your warm list. Write 50 names: former colleagues, classmates, people from courses and communities. You are not asking them to buy; you are asking who they know.
  • One free workshop a month. A 45-minute live session on one pattern ("Quiet your inner critic before review season", "Raise your rates without the guilt"). Pitch it to coworking spaces, professional associations, alumni groups and employee resource groups. End with an invitation to a discovery call.
  • Posts about one pattern, three times a week. On the platform where your client already reads (LinkedIn for managers and professionals, Instagram for many personal-growth audiences). Describe the pattern in their words from your demand interviews.
  • A lead magnet that starts the work. A five-day challenge or a short self-assessment, delivered by email with a booking link at the end. Coachful's funnels cover booking, application, lead-magnet and checkout flows with pixel and UTM tracking.
  • Podcast and newsletter guest spots. Small shows in your client's industry are easier to get onto and send better-fit listeners.
  • Referral partners. Career coaches, business coaches, HR leads, yoga and movement studios, and therapists whose clients want forward-focused work after therapy. Agree how you will refer back when something is outside your scope.

Scripts you can adapt

Warm message: "Hi Sam, I've started a coaching practice for first-time managers who second-guess themselves in meetings. I'm taking on a few clients this quarter. Do you know anyone in their first year of managing who might want a 20-minute call to talk it through? No pressure either way."

After a workshop: "Thanks for coming to today's session. You mentioned your inner critic gets loudest before one-to-ones. If you'd like to map out what would change that in the next 12 weeks, here's a link to book a free 20-minute call."

Closing a discovery call: "Based on what you've told me, the 12-week program fits: we'd work on X and Y, with a short check-in each morning. It's [price], or three monthly payments. Would you like to start, or is there anything you'd need to know first?"

Track every conversation. Coachful's Intakes page shows total discovery calls, upcoming calls, conversions and your conversion rate, so you can see whether the problem is getting calls or closing them.

Coachful Intakes page with total intakes, upcoming calls, conversions and conversion rate
The Intakes page tracking discovery calls: 10 intakes, 3 upcoming, 2 converted and a 40% conversion rate in this demo.

When clients finish, ask for honest feedback and permission to quote it. Do not offer discounts in exchange for positive reviews; the FTC's rule on reviews covers exactly that.

How do you deliver mindset coaching so clients stay?

Give clients something small to do every day and make it visible to both of you. A weekly call alone leaves six days for old patterns to win; a two-minute morning check-in and an evening reflection keep the work alive and give you real data for the next session.

A delivery rhythm that works for most mindset programs

  • Week 0: welcome flow, signed agreement, intake form, first goal set together.
  • Daily: morning check-in (energy, one intention) and evening check-in (one win, one thought you noticed). One or two habits tracked, such as a five-minute journal or a reframe practice.
  • Weekly: a goal for the week, a short lesson or worksheet, and a session or group call.
  • Every four weeks: a progress review against the outcome in your one-sentence promise.
  • Week 10: the renewal conversation, before the program ends rather than after.

In Coachful these pieces sit in the client's branded home and app: programs with weekly goals and daily tasks, habits with streaks, morning and evening check-ins, and goals with progress bars. You see it all on the client record, along with the thriving, active, quiet or at-risk status. See coaching program software for how programs are built.

Community for group clients

Cohort clients stay longer when they know each other. When someone enrols in a program, Coachful creates a cohort group automatically; add a community feed, group chat, direct messages and live video events for Q&A calls. See group coaching software for group-specific setup.

What does a 30/60/90-day launch plan look like?

Spend the first month on decisions and setup, the second on conversations, and the third on delivery and refinement. Each phase has one output you can check.

DaysFocusActionsOutput to check
1 to 30Decide and set up10 demand interviews; write the one-sentence promise; design 2 or 3 offers; set prices; choose structure and get an EIN; agreement, insurance quotes, privacy policy; build site, booking, payments and the first programA live site with a bookable discovery call and a signed-ready agreement
31 to 60ConversationsMessage the 50-name list; run one workshop; post three times a week; launch a lead magnet; contact five referral partnersAt least 15 discovery calls held and your first 3 to 5 paying clients
61 to 90Deliver and refineRun the program with daily check-ins; second workshop; open a small group cohort; ask early clients for feedback; review conversion rate and adjust the offer or price10 paying clients across 1:1 and group, and a written list of what to change

The targets are examples to aim at, not a forecast. If you reach day 60 with no paying clients, go back to the niche sentence: the problem is almost always that the client or the outcome is too vague.

How much does it cost to start a mindset coaching business?

A lean start can run on one software membership, an EIN that costs nothing and an insurance policy; a comfortable start adds an LLC, an attorney-reviewed agreement and bookkeeping help. The table uses example allowances for items that depend on quotes; replace them with your own numbers. For a full line-by-line budget across niches, see how much it costs to start a coaching business.

Leave training out of your launch budget if you are already trained. If you are not, that cost belongs in the decision covered by the how-to-become guide, not in your business setup.

What mistakes should new mindset coaches avoid?

  • Selling "mindset" instead of an outcome. Nobody searches for a mindset; they search for a way out of a specific situation.
  • Drifting into therapy. If sessions keep returning to past trauma or symptoms, refer. A clear scope line protects your client and you.
  • Selling single sessions. Belief change takes repetition. Programs with daily practice get better results and steadier income.
  • Building for weeks before talking to anyone. A simple site and ten conversations beat a perfect funnel with no traffic.
  • Income promises. Especially in money-mindset work. Describe what clients do, not what they will earn, unless you have documented, typical results.
  • Too many tools. Each extra login is a place a client drops off. Keep the whole client journey in one place.
  • No renewal plan. Decide what happens after week 12 before you sell week 1: a lighter monthly continuation, a group, or a graduation.
  • Ignoring tax from day one. Set aside a share of every payment for tax and check estimated payment rules with an accountant.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a certification to start a mindset coaching business?

There is no single coaching licence, and ICF credentials are voluntary. Training improves your coaching and helps clients trust you, so most coaches complete a program before or while launching. Check your state and city for general business licence rules.

How long does it take to start a mindset coaching business?

Setup takes two to four weeks if you keep it lean: offer, prices, structure, agreement and a simple site. Signing clients takes longer. The plan above aims for 10 paying clients by day 90, but that is a target, not a promise.

Should I form an LLC before my first client?

Not necessarily. The SBA describes a sole proprietorship as suited to low-risk businesses testing an idea, while an LLC adds liability protection. Many coaches start as a sole proprietor with insurance and form an LLC once revenue is steady; ask an accountant or attorney about your situation.

What should a mindset coaching agreement include?

A scope line stating coaching is not therapy, confidentiality and its limits, session and rescheduling rules, payment and refund terms, recording consent and no guarantee of results. Send it for e-signature before the first call and keep it on the client record.

How do I price mindset coaching when I'm new?

Start from your income target and weekly capacity, then work out the price each offer needs. Compare the result with what similar coaches list publicly and adjust. Offer a payment plan rather than lowering your rate.

Can I run a mindset coaching business entirely online?

Yes. Video sessions, online booking, card payments, e-signed agreements, programs with daily check-ins and a client community can all run online. Coachful includes built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links.

Is Coachful suitable if I also see therapy clients?

Not for the therapy side. Coachful is not HIPAA-certified and does not sign a BAA, so it is not meant for clinical records or insurance billing. Use it for coaching clients and keep clinical work in a system built for it.

What is Coachful's white-glove build service?

It is a free service on every plan: you describe what you want built, such as a website, funnel, program or email sequence, attach references and files, and the Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. Nothing is invented, and it does not cover videos, logo design, ads or ongoing marketing.

How much does Coachful cost?

Coachful has flat monthly plans; lower plans cap the number of clients, Pro is unlimited, and team plans add coach seats (current plans: Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients). Monthly plans cancel in one click, and there is a free trial.

How do I find my first mindset coaching clients without ads?

Start with a list of 50 people you know, run a free monthly workshop on one pattern, post about that pattern where your clients read, and build three to five referral partners. Track every discovery call so you know whether to fix your reach or your offer.
