Life Coach Certification in Canada: Programs, Rules, Costs

Life coach certification in Canada is voluntary. We found no province or territory that licenses life coaching or protects the title "coach", so anyone can practise, and certification is a way to build skill and earn trust rather than a legal requirement. The credential Canadian clients and employers recognize most is the same one used worldwide, the International Coaching Federation's ACC, PCC or MCC. What Canada does regulate is the work next door: psychotherapy in Ontario and Quebec, counselling therapy in Nova Scotia, and psychology everywhere.
That gives you a clear sequence: know the provincial lines, pick a training program that leads to an ICF credential (Canadian-based or online), budget for the costs beyond tuition, and set up the business side, including GST/HST once you pass the small-supplier threshold. This guide covers each step, with Canadian and Canada-friendly programs checked on their own websites in October 2026. When you're ready to launch, Coachful's team builds your coaching website for free on every plan.
Is life coaching regulated in Canada?
No. Professions are regulated provincially in Canada, and the regulated mental health professions sit right next to coaching. These are the lines we could confirm on official sources:
| Province | What's regulated nearby | What it means for a life coach |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario regulates registered psychotherapists under the Psychotherapy Act, 2007. Only registrants of certain regulated colleges may use the title "psychotherapist", and unregulated providers can't perform the controlled act of psychotherapy. | Don't treat serious disorders of thought, mood, emotional regulation, perception or memory, and don't call yourself a psychotherapist |
| Quebec | No one may practise psychotherapy or use the title psychothérapeute without a psychotherapist permit, unless they're a psychologist or physician competent in it. | Quebec's regulation lists coaching aimed at developing the potential of a person who is in neither distress nor suffering among interventions that are not psychotherapy |
| Nova Scotia | The Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists regulates registered counselling therapists. | Avoid counselling titles and clinical counselling work |
| Every province and territory | Psychologists must be licensed by the regulator in their province or territory. | Don't call yourself a psychologist; "coach" is the honest word for coaching |
Sources: the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario's page on unregulated practitioners; the Ordre des psychologues du Québec on the psychotherapy provisions of Bill 21; section 6 of Quebec's Règlement sur le permis de psychothérapeute; the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists; and the Canadian Psychological Association on licensure, all read in October 2026. This is a map, not legal advice.
Quebec's wording is the clearest statement anywhere in Canada of what coaching is: work on personal or professional fulfilment with someone who isn't in distress or suffering. Build your intake around it. If a client's distress is driving the sessions, refer. Our guide to whether you need a license to be a life coach covers the same lines for other countries, and life coach qualifications covers the rest of what clients check.
The ICF in Canada
ICF credentials work the same way in Canada as anywhere: an ICF-accredited program, logged coaching hours, mentor coaching and an exam.
| ICF credential | Coach training | Coaching experience | Clients |
|---|---|---|---|
| ACC | 60+ hours | 100+ hours, 75 paid | 8+ |
| PCC | 125+ hours | 500+ hours, 450 paid | 25+ |
| MCC | 200+ hours | 2,500+ hours, 2,250 paid | 35+ |
Source: ICF experience requirements. Each credential also needs 10 hours of mentor coaching.
Local ICF chapters are where Canadian coaches meet, find mentor coaches and pick up continuing education. ICF Toronto describes itself as "among the largest chapters in the world with over 1400 members," and ICF Québec is the "Chapitre québécois" of the federation, working in French. The ICF's chapter map lists the rest.

Notes on each
- UBC. A university certificate at ICF Level 2, aimed at organizational coaching, so it suits coaches who expect to work with employers. Its handbook describes 8 hours of group and team mentor coaching and 10 hours of one-to-one mentor coaching as part of the accredited education.
- International Coach Academy. An online school that publishes Canadian-dollar prices, which removes exchange-rate guesswork. It's at the 125-hour Level 2 minimum and mostly self-directed.
- Erickson. Founded in Vancouver in 1980 by Marilyn Atkinson, according to its own history page, and still running in-person courses there. Prices are in US dollars; the pricing page says other currencies and payment plans are supported.
- Adler. Toronto-based, priced in Canadian dollars per part. Parts 1 to 5 come to about CDN $11,385 plus HST by our sum; the final exam's fee isn't listed. Its own credential is the Adler Certified Associate Coach (ACAC). Ask which ICF level the program holds.
- Coaching Out of the Box. An all-live ACC route with mentor coaching and the evaluation included; a separate track continues to Level 2.
- Certified Coaches Federation. Names no outside accreditor on the pages we read. A six-week certificate won't count toward an ICF credential on its own.
Plenty of Canadians also train with US and international schools online. Our comparisons of life coach certification programs, ICF-accredited coaching programs and online life coach certification cover them; confirm any program in the ICF's education search before you pay.

What it costs beyond tuition
- Exchange rates. Many programs price in US dollars, so the Canadian cost moves with the exchange rate. Check whether your card charges a foreign-transaction fee.
- Sales tax on tuition. Some Canadian providers list prices "+ HST".
- Mentor coaching, if it isn't included. All three ICF credentials need 10 hours.
- ICF application and exam fees, paid to the ICF and listed on its credentialing pages. Our guide to ICF certification sets out the current fees.
- Insurance. Not legally required for most coaches, but common. See our seven checks before you buy life coach insurance.
- Your time. 100 coaching hours for the ACC takes most people months.
Our guide to what it costs to become a life coach adds up the rest.
Running a coaching business in Canada
- GST/HST. The Canada Revenue Agency's small-supplier rule means you generally don't have to register while your taxable revenue stays at or under $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Once you exceed it, registration becomes mandatory and you start charging GST/HST; you can register voluntarily before that.
- Keep records from day one: invoices, payments and expenses, so tax time is a report rather than a search.
- Write your scope into the agreement. Especially in Ontario and Quebec, state that coaching isn't psychotherapy and say when you'll refer. Our coaching agreement template is a starting point.
- Offer French if you can. In Quebec, and for many clients elsewhere, coaching in French is a real differentiator.

What Canadian life coaches earn
Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report doesn't publish Canada-only figures. Its North American band for all coaching is $80,000 to $120,000 a year (ICF 2025 and PayScale, in US dollars), pulled up by employer-paid executive work. For life coaching specifically, the report gives $47,000 to $72,000 a year and session rates of $75 to $200, from US-centred salary sources. Treat both as rough guides and build your own estimate from your rate and client numbers. Our guides to life coach salary and how much life coaches charge show how, and coachingrates.com has the full dataset.
Where Coachful fits once you're certified
Coachful isn't a training program or a certification body, and it doesn't certify anyone. It's the platform you run your practice on while you log hours and after you graduate. A Coachful membership includes:
- ICF hour tracking. Completed sessions count toward the ACC, PCC and MCC thresholds in hours and distinct clients, and you can export an ICF client coaching log with paid and pro bono hours. See ICF hour tracking and how to track coaching hours.
- Booking across time zones, with automatic time-zone detection, two-way Google, Apple and Outlook calendar sync, and reminders.
- Payments to your own Stripe or Razorpay account with a 0% Coachful platform fee, with invoices for every transaction.
- Agreements and intake that keep your scope in writing before the first session.

The free build. On every plan, Coachful's team builds your coaching website, first offer page and first program inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. Choose We'll build it for you · FREE under Create, or Fill in a form on the Website page, and tell the team who you coach, where, and in which languages. Frequently asked questions
Is life coaching regulated in Canada?
No. We found no province or territory that licenses life coaching. What's regulated is nearby work: psychotherapy in Ontario and Quebec, counselling therapy in Nova Scotia and psychology everywhere. Quebec's psychotherapy regulation lists coaching for people who aren't in distress among interventions that are not psychotherapy.
Do I need a certification to be a life coach in Canada?
No, it's voluntary. Certification builds skill and trust, and employers and coaching platforms often ask for an ICF credential. Individual clients care just as much about your experience with their situation.
Which life coach certification is recognized in Canada?
The International Coaching Federation's ACC, PCC and MCC are the most widely recognized, in Canada as elsewhere. Choose a training program the ICF accredits, ideally at the level that matches the credential you want: Level 1 for the ACC, Level 2 for the PCC.
How much does life coach certification cost in Canada?
Among the programs we checked in October 2026, International Coach Academy's Level 2 program listed CAD $10,135 paid in full, and Adler's parts are CDN $1,995 to $2,900 each plus HST. Some providers price in US dollars, such as Coaching Out of the Box at USD $4,895 for its Level 1 program.
Can a life coach call themselves a therapist in Ontario?
No. In Ontario only registrants of certain regulated colleges may use the title "psychotherapist", and unregulated providers can't perform the controlled act of psychotherapy. In Quebec, the psychotherapist title requires a permit. Use "coach" and describe what you do.
Do life coaches in Canada charge GST/HST?
Once your taxable revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, you're no longer a small supplier and must register and charge GST/HST, according to the Canada Revenue Agency. You can register voluntarily before that. Check the rules for your province with an accountant.
Are there ICF chapters in Canada?
Yes. ICF Toronto says it has more than 1,400 members, and ICF Québec serves coaches in French. The ICF's chapter map lists chapters by location.
Will Coachful build my coaching website for free?
Yes. Coachful's team builds your website, first offer page and first program for free on every plan, usually within about 24 hours. Coachful itself is a paid membership with a free trial; the build costs nothing extra.
