What Is Relationship Coaching? Who It Helps and Costs

What Is Relationship Coaching? Who It Helps and Costs

What is relationship coaching? It is coaching that helps you build the relationships you want, with a partner, a future partner, a co-parent or family, by setting clear goals and practicing specific skills such as how you raise a complaint, listen during a disagreement, repair after a fight or decide together. A relationship coach works with singles or couples, mostly on the present and the future, and gives you things to practice between sessions. Relationship coaching is not couples therapy: it does not diagnose or treat mental health problems, and it is the wrong choice when there is abuse or a crisis.

That difference shapes almost every decision you will make, so this guide spends time on it. You will also find the main kinds of relationship coaching, how sessions work, what a couples session looks like, what the research supports, what it costs, and how to choose a coach.

The kinds of relationship coaching

KindWho it is forTypical focus
Couples coachingPartners who want a better way of talking, deciding and staying closeRecurring arguments, communication, time together, big decisions such as moving or having children
Pre-commitment coachingCouples moving in together, engaged or newly marriedExpectations about money, chores, family and conflict, agreed in advance
Dating coachingSingle people who want a relationshipWhat they want, patterns in who they choose, profiles, first dates, confidence
Divorce and co-parenting coachingPeople separating or living as co-parentsDecisions, communication with an ex, the first year after; see divorce coaching
Family relationship coachingAdults working on relationships with parents, siblings or adult childrenBoundaries, difficult conversations, caring responsibilities

Some coaches do all five. Most are better at one or two, and it is worth asking which.

How relationship coaching works

A couples coaching engagement usually starts with a joint first session to agree what you both want, sometimes followed by a short individual conversation with each partner. The coach agrees two or three goals with you ("we can disagree about money without either of us leaving the room"), then each session works on one skill or situation. Between sessions you practice: a weekly check-in conversation, a new way of starting hard topics, a shared calendar habit, a written agreement on chores.

With singles, the work is similar but one-sided: what you want, what you keep repeating, and what to do differently on the next date or in the next conversation with your mother.

Two things a good coach settles in writing at the start: what the coaching covers and does not cover, and how they handle anything one partner tells them privately. The International Coaching Federation's Code of Ethics expects coaches to agree roles, responsibilities, confidentiality and financial arrangements before coaching begins (ICF Code of Ethics).

What a couples coaching session looks like

MinutesWhat happens
0 to 10How the week went: the practice you agreed, what worked, where it slipped
10 to 20Choosing today's topic: one live disagreement or situation
20 to 50Practicing it in the room: each person speaks, the other reflects back, the coach slows things down and points out what helps
50 to 60One practice for the week, and how you will know it worked

A short example of the practice part:

Partner A: You always say yes to your sister's plans without asking me.

Coach: Before B answers, can you say it as a request about next time?

Partner A: I'd like us to check with each other before we commit our weekend.

Coach: B, what did you hear A ask for?

Partner B: To check before saying yes. That's fair. I'd like to be able to say "let me check" without it feeling like a big deal.

The coach is teaching a skill, not judging who is right. Most of the change happens when the couple uses it at home on a Tuesday.

Relationship coach vs couples therapist vs marriage counselor

LicensingNone required; coaching is unregulatedLicensed. Marriage and family therapists are licensed in every US state, after a master's degree, supervised clinical hours and an exam
Can diagnose and treatNoYes, including depression, anxiety and trauma affecting the relationship
FocusGoals, skills and the futurePatterns, distress and healing, including the past
InsuranceNot covered as health careMay be covered by health insurance, depending on the plan; ask your insurer
Best forReasonably stable relationships that want to improve, or people preparing for oneHigh distress, betrayal, mental health conditions, or when coaching has not helped

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes marriage and family therapists as diagnosing and treating disorders in the context of relationships, and notes that every state requires them to be licensed (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). "Marriage counselor" is an everyday term, usually meaning one of these licensed professionals. For a fuller comparison, see our guide to life coach vs therapist.

See a licensed professional instead of a coach when...

  • There is violence, threats, control over money or movement, or you feel afraid of your partner. In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 800-799-7233, or text START to 88788 (listed by the US Office for Victims of Crime). Coaching is not the right tool while anyone in the relationship is unsafe; start with a domestic violence service.
  • One of you has depression, anxiety, an addiction or trauma that is driving the conflict.
  • Either of you has thoughts of self-harm. Call or text 988 in the US, or your local emergency number.
  • You have tried coaching and keep getting stuck in the same place.

Does relationship coaching work? What the research says

We could not find good-quality trials of relationship coaching under that name. The closest body of evidence is relationship education, structured programs that teach couples communication and conflict skills, which is close to what many relationship coaches do.

  • Relationship education helps on average. A meta-analysis of 117 studies of marriage and relationship education found effects on relationship quality of d = 0.30 to 0.36 and on communication skills of d = 0.43 to 0.45 in experimental studies, with moderate-dosage programs doing better than low-dosage ones (Hawkins and colleagues, 2008). The authors note that samples lacked racial, ethnic and economic diversity, and that outcomes such as relationship stability and aggression were rarely studied.
  • The coaching relationship matters. Across 27 samples and 3,563 coaching processes, the quality of the working alliance between coach and client was consistently linked to better outcomes (r = 0.41) (Graßmann, Schölmerich and Schermuly, 2020). In couples work, that means both partners need to trust the coach.

So relationship coaching is reasonable for skill-building in relationships that are basically safe and stable, and it is not a substitute for therapy when there is serious distress.

How much does relationship coaching cost?

Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report, compiled from PayScale, Glassdoor and practitioner reports, gives these relationship coaching rates in US dollars:

CoachTypical hourly rateSource
Typical relationship coach$100 to $200PayScale and practitioner reports
Newer coach$75 to $125Practitioner estimate
Experienced coach$125 to $250Practitioner estimate
Top of the niche$250 to $500Practitioner estimate

Q2 2026. The report notes that relationship sessions are often longer and emotionally heavier, so per-hour figures can understate what a session costs. More detail on coachingrates.com.

The report has no package prices specific to relationship coaching, so ask each coach how many sessions they usually work with couples for, and what a package includes (individual sessions, messaging, exercises). Our guide to whether a life coach is worth it has a simple way to weigh the cost against what you want to change.

How to choose a relationship coach

  • Who do you usually work with? Couples, singles, a particular stage of life, same-sex couples, co-parents.
  • What methods do you draw on, and where did you train? Many relationship coaches use ideas from research-based relationship education. Coach training and relationship-specific courses are both voluntary.
  • Do you ask about safety at home before working with a couple? A good coach screens for this.
  • What happens if one of us tells you something privately? Listen for a clear, written policy.
  • When would you refer us to a therapist? A coach who answers this easily understands their scope.
  • What will we practice between sessions? If the answer is "nothing", keep looking.

Red flags: guaranteed outcomes ("save your marriage in 30 days"), taking sides, encouraging you to keep secrets from your partner, or treating serious distress as a mindset problem.

Frequently asked questions

What is relationship coaching in simple terms?

Relationship coaching helps singles or couples set goals for their relationships and practice the skills to reach them, such as raising complaints, listening, repairing after arguments and making decisions together. It is future-focused, and it does not diagnose or treat mental health problems.

What does a relationship coach do?

A relationship coach agrees goals with you, works on one situation or skill per session, often by having you practice it in the room, and gives you something to try at home before the next session. With singles, they focus on patterns, choices and confidence.

Is relationship coaching the same as couples therapy?

No. Couples therapists are licensed clinicians who can diagnose and treat conditions affecting the relationship. Relationship coaches are unregulated and work on skills and goals in relationships that are basically safe and stable.

Does relationship coaching work?

There are few trials of relationship coaching by name. Relationship education programs, which teach similar skills, improved relationship quality and communication in a meta-analysis of 117 studies. Results depend a lot on the fit between the couple and the coach.

How much does a relationship coach cost?

Typical rates run $100 to $200 an hour, with newer coaches at $75 to $125 and the most experienced at $250 to $500, according to Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report. Couples sessions are often longer than individual ones.

When should we see a therapist instead of a relationship coach?

See a licensed therapist if there is any violence or fear, if depression, anxiety, addiction or trauma is driving the conflict, after a betrayal that feels unmanageable, or if coaching has not helped. If you are in danger, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

Can I see a relationship coach on my own?

Yes. Many people work with a relationship coach individually, to understand their patterns, prepare for a hard conversation, get back into dating, or decide whether to stay in a relationship.
