How to Become a Life Coach in Australia: 2026 Business Guide

How to Become a Life Coach in Australia: 2026 Business Guide

Here is how to become a life coach in Australia, in order: choose who you coach and what change you help them make, get training that fits your goals (the title "life coach" is not regulated, so no licence is required), register a free ABN, start as a sole trader unless an accountant advises otherwise, check whether you need to register for GST, take out professional indemnity insurance, put a coaching agreement and privacy policy in place, then build one offer, one booking page and one way to get paid. The rest is finding your first ten clients and keeping them long enough to see results.

This guide assumes you have already decided to coach. It covers the business side: the checklist, packages, pricing maths, legal setup with official sources, the tools, a 30/60/90-day plan and what it costs to start. If you are still deciding whether coaching is for you, read how to become a life coach first.

What are the steps to becoming a life coach in Australia, at a glance?

There are ten steps, and most people can complete the setup in four to eight weeks while still working another job. Training takes longer, but you can run it in parallel with the business setup. Times and costs below are typical ranges and examples, not quotes.

The sister guide on how to start a coaching business in Australia covers the same registrations for every coaching niche. This article goes deeper on what is specific to life coaching: the scope line, packages that sell when the outcome is hard to measure, and how to find clients for a broad discipline.

Is life coaching a viable business in Australia?

Yes, if you narrow it. Life coaching is the easiest coaching niche to enter and the hardest to sell, because "a better life" is not something people search for or budget for. A specific change is: a career pivot at 40, rebuilding after divorce, getting unstuck after a redundancy, returning to work after parental leave.

Who actually pays for life coaching?

Three groups pay. Individuals pay out of pocket, usually at a moment of change, and they buy when they can picture the result. Employers sometimes fund coaching for staff, especially around leadership, return to work or wellbeing, and they want an invoice, an agreement and a clear scope. Organisations such as community groups and associations occasionally hire coaches for workshops or group programs. Most new life coaches start with individuals and add employer-funded work once they have a track record.

Thinking of launching your coaching business?

Answer a few questions and Coachful builds it around you: your website, programs, booking and payments. Ready in minutes.

Build your platform

Do you need a qualification to be a life coach in Australia?

No. Life coaching is not a licensed or regulated profession in Australia, so anyone can use the title. That freedom cuts both ways: buyers cannot tell a trained coach from an untrained one, so credentials, a clear process and visible results do the work that a licence does in other fields. See how to become a life coach without certification for the trade-offs.

Which training routes are open to you?

You have three main routes. The first is a program accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), which leads toward the ACC, PCC and MCC credentials. Each level needs a set number of coaching hours and clients: the ACC threshold is 100 hours and 8 clients, and the PCC threshold is 500 hours. The full path is in how to become a certified life coach. The second is a nationally recognised course. If a provider claims its course is nationally recognised, look it up on training.gov.au, the national register of accredited training, before you enrol. The third is a non-accredited course plus supervised practice. It is cheaper, but you will lean harder on testimonials and case studies.

Costs vary enormously by provider and format. How much does it cost to become a life coach breaks down what you pay for, and how long it takes sets out realistic timelines.

Where does life coaching stop and therapy start?

Coaching is not therapy, counselling or medical treatment. A life coach works with people who are functioning and want to move forward; a psychologist, counsellor or GP treats mental health conditions. Write your scope into your agreement and your website. Refer a client on, and pause coaching if needed, when they disclose thoughts of self-harm, symptoms of depression, anxiety or trauma that are getting in the way of daily life, substance dependence, an eating disorder, or family violence. Keep a short referral list: their GP, a psychologist you can name, and crisis lines. If your niche touches trauma or recovery, read how to become a trauma coach for a deeper treatment of scope.

How do you define your client and your offer?

Write one sentence: "I help [specific person] go from [current situation] to [result] in [timeframe]." If you cannot fill every bracket, you are not ready to build a website yet. "I help women in their 40s who were made redundant go from shaken to a confident next move within 90 days" sells. "I help people live their best life" does not.

Test the sentence on five people who match the description. If they say "that is me" or "I know someone like that", you have a niche. If they nod politely, adjust it. A free tool like the Wheel of Life is a useful conversation starter in these early calls and works well later as a lead magnet.

Three example packages

Sell packages, not single sessions. A package commits the client to enough time to see change, gives you predictable income and makes your price about an outcome rather than an hour. These three are examples to adapt, not a formula.

  • Clarity Sprint (entry offer). Four 60-minute sessions over six weeks, a values and priorities workbook, and messaging between sessions. For people who know something has to change but not what.
  • 90-Day Reset (core offer). Six sessions over 12 weeks, a program with weekly goals, daily habits and a short morning check-in, plus a mid-point review. This is where most of your revenue should come from.
  • Group cohort (scale offer). An eight-week program for 8 to 12 people with a weekly group call, a private community and the same habits and check-ins. Lower price per person, higher revenue per hour of your time. Add it once you have run the core offer several times.

Our guide to coaching packages has more structures.

How should you price life coaching in Australia?

Price from your income target and your real capacity, not from a guess at the market. Work out what you need to earn, how many client hours you can deliver in a sustainable week, and what that means per package. Then sanity-check it against what people in your niche are already paying.

The table below is illustrative only: the figures are examples in Australian dollars to show the maths, not market rates. Replace them with your own numbers.

LineExample figure (illustrative)How to work it out
Income target before tax$90,000 a yearYour personal number, including super you pay yourself
Business costs$8,000 a yearSoftware, insurance, training, accountant, card fees
Revenue needed$98,000 a yearIncome target plus costs
Working weeks4452 minus holidays, sick days and admin weeks
Revenue per weekAbout $2,230Revenue needed divided by working weeks
90-Day Reset price$1,800Your core package price
New core clients needed per yearAbout 55Revenue needed divided by package price
Active clients at any timeAbout 1555 clients times 12 weeks, divided by 44 working weeks
GST (if registered)Add 10% to Australian clients$1,800 becomes $1,980 including GST

Two lessons come out of this maths. First, single sessions rarely add up: you would need far more bookings per week, plus the time to sell each one. Second, about 15 active clients is a manageable 1:1 load, but finding 55 new clients a year is a lot of selling. A group cohort or a renewal offer for finished clients cuts that number sharply. Decide early whether your prices include GST, and say so on your website and invoices.

What legal and tax setup does a life coach need in Australia?

You need an ABN, a business structure, a GST decision, professional indemnity insurance, a coaching agreement and a privacy policy. None of it is hard, but the details depend on your situation, so check them with a registered tax agent, accountant or lawyer.

ABN

An Australian Business Number identifies your business to the ATO and to clients, and you quote it on invoices. According to business.gov.au, it is free to register for an ABN through the Australian Business Register. Ignore paid "ABN registration" services that charge for the same form.

Sole trader or company?

Most new life coaches start as a sole trader. It is cheap and simple, and business income goes on your personal tax return. The trade-off is that you are personally liable for business debts. A company separates the business from you but costs more to set up and run: ASIC fees, a separate tax return, director duties and a director ID. It starts to make sense when income is higher or the risk is greater. If you trade under any name other than your own personal name, you need to register a business name with ASIC. Your accountant can tell you when it is worth switching structure.

GST

You must register for GST once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 a year, or is expected to. You can also register voluntarily below that. Once registered, you add 10% GST to Australian clients' prices, issue tax invoices and lodge activity statements. The ATO explains the rules on registering for GST. Services to clients overseas may be treated differently, so ask your tax agent if you coach internationally. In the pricing example above, 55 clients at $1,800 crosses the threshold, so a full-time practice should plan for GST from the start.

Insurance

Professional indemnity insurance covers claims that your coaching caused a client a loss. It is not compulsory for most coaches, but it is the cover most relevant to coaching, and corporate clients often ask for a certificate before they sign. Public liability matters if you see clients in person or run workshops. Ask a broker for two or three quotes and read the exclusions, especially if your niche touches health, relationships or money.

Coaching agreement

Every client signs an agreement before the first session. It should cover what you deliver, the fee and payment terms, cancellation and rescheduling, confidentiality and its limits, the scope line (coaching is not therapy, with your referral commitment), how you store notes, and how either side can end the arrangement. Australian Consumer Law applies to your services, so do not promise outcomes you cannot control, and do not write terms that try to exclude consumer guarantees. A template is fine to start, but have a lawyer review it once. Our page on coaching contracts explains how e-signed agreements fit into onboarding.

Coachful Agreements tab with a drop area for a signed PDF
The Agreements tab on a client record, where signed coaching agreements are stored.

Privacy and client data

The Privacy Act covers some small businesses but not most. The OAIC says that a small business is one with an annual turnover of $3 million or less, and that most are not covered, though some are. Businesses that provide a health service and hold health information are among the exceptions, so if your life coaching drifts into wellbeing or health, check the OAIC guidance carefully. Even if you are exempt, publish a privacy policy, collect only what you need and keep session notes somewhere secure rather than in a shared drive or email threads. Clients share personal things in coaching, and corporate buyers will ask how you handle data.

For email marketing, get consent before you add people to a list, identify yourself and include a working unsubscribe link in every message, as Australia's spam rules require. Check the details with the ACMA or your lawyer.

What tech stack does a new life coach need?

You need six things: a website, a booking page, payments, agreements, a way to deliver your program between sessions, and email. You can stitch these together from separate tools or run them from one platform. We make Coachful, so weigh our view accordingly, but we recommend one platform as the home for a new life coaching practice: one login, one client record and one bill. For a wider comparison, see the best coaching software in Australia.

Selection criteria, in one line: one login for the whole client journey, delivery between sessions (habits, check-ins, programs), total monthly stack cost and setup effort.

ToolWhat it coversMonthly cost (USD, as listed in October 2026)What it does not cover

A typical stitched stack for a life coach is a booking tool, a contracts and invoicing tool, an email tool and a website builder, with program delivery done in shared documents or a messaging app. That is four logins for you and three or four for the client, and nothing that shows you which clients are drifting.

What Coachful is, and who it is for

Coachful is a coaching platform. One subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant called Michelle. You get one login, and your clients get one app branded as your practice. It is built for coaches who deliver programs rather than just sessions, for solo coaches who expect to grow into a small team, and for coaches replacing four to six separate tools. Payments run through your own Stripe account with a 0% Coachful platform fee, so you pay only Stripe's processing, and Stripe Tax is available if you register for GST.

What it does not do: it is not HIPAA-certified and not built for clinical records, so if you also practise as a counsellor or psychologist, clinical notes belong in a clinical system. It does not take PayPal and there is no permanent free plan, though you can start with a free trial. The client app runs under the Coachful listing with your branding, not under your own App Store account.

Current plans: (Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients). Lower plans cap the number of clients, Pro is unlimited, and monthly plans cancel in one click.

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, choose "We'll build it for you", describe what you need and attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files such as your logo, photos and copy. The Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours: a website, a discovery-call funnel, a sales page, a 90-day program, a course outline, an email sequence or a form. Nothing gets invented. There are no fake credentials, testimonials or prices; gaps are left for you to fill. It does not cover video recording, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing. One recent build was for a leadership coach whose Squarespace renewal was days away: one clean homepage with a repeated "talk with me" button. Another was for a menopause and midlife health coach starting from nothing, who got a five-page site in sage and cream where every button leads to a free 20-minute consultation. More in our write-up of the free white-glove service.

How do you set up your website, booking and payments?

Your website needs four pages and one job: get the right people onto a discovery call. Home (who you help and the result), Work With Me (your packages), About (why you, with your training), and Contact or Book. Add a privacy policy page. Skip the blog until you have clients.

In Coachful, the section-based builder includes 30 designed homepage templates, a custom domain, SEO settings and an Import website option if you already have a site. Hearth is one of the templates aimed at life coaches. If you would rather compare general website builders, see the best website builder in Australia.

Set up your booking page with sensible rules: a free 20 to 30 minute discovery call type, a paid session type for existing clients, buffers between calls and a minimum notice period. Coachful detects the visitor's time zone, which matters if you coach clients in Perth and Brisbane from Sydney, or clients overseas. It syncs both ways with Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook calendars, and creates built-in video or Zoom, Meet or Teams links automatically. Add two or three intake questions to the discovery call booking so you arrive prepared.

For payments, connect your own Stripe account. You can then sell one-off packages, subscriptions and payment plans, accept Apple Pay and Google Pay, offer coupons and issue refunds. An invoice is generated per transaction, and you can send manual invoices for employer-funded clients. If you need a standalone invoicing tool for other work, the best invoicing software in Australia compares the options. The order of operations on a new client is: discovery call, proposal, agreement signed, payment taken, welcome flow starts. With one platform, that is one link for the client.

Which one looks like you?

Coachful builds your coaching website from a few answers, in a design chosen for your niche, with programs, booking and payments ready behind it.

Build your platform

How do you find your first 10 life coaching clients?

Your first ten clients will almost certainly come from people who already know you or know someone who knows you. Content and ads come later. The job in month one is conversations, not followers.

Channels that work for new life coaches

  • Your warm network. Write a short personal message (not a broadcast) to 30 to 50 people telling them what you now do and who you help. Ask who they know, not whether they want to buy.
  • Practice clients turned paying clients. If you coached people at a reduced rate or pro bono during training, ask for a testimonial and offer them a paid continuation.
  • LinkedIn. Strong for career change, return to work and redundancy niches. Post twice a week about the problem you solve, and comment thoughtfully on posts by people in your niche.
  • Instagram or Facebook groups. Better for relationship, midlife and personal reinvention niches. Answer questions generously, follow the group rules and never pitch in comments.
  • Local partnerships. Outplacement firms, HR consultants, divorce lawyers, financial planners, gyms and community centres all meet people in transition. Offer a free workshop for their clients.
  • Talks and workshops. Libraries, coworking spaces and professional associations often welcome a free 45-minute session. Collect emails with a simple worksheet.

Scripts you can adapt

Warm network message: "Hi Sam, I have finished my coach training and I am now working with people who have been made redundant and want to work out their next move. If anyone in your world is in that spot, I would be grateful for an intro. I offer a free 30-minute call to see if it is a fit."

Discovery call close: "Based on what you have told me, the 90-Day Reset is the right fit. It is six sessions over 12 weeks, with daily habits and check-ins between calls so the work does not stop when we hang up. The investment is [price]. Would you like to start, or is there anything you need to think through first?"

Follow-up after "I need to think about it": "Thanks for the call on Tuesday. You mentioned [their goal]. If it helps, here is the outline of the program again. Happy to answer any questions, and no pressure either way."

Track every lead somewhere. A prospects list that shows where each person came from tells you, after a month, which channel is worth your time.

Coachful prospects table listing leads with their source and stage
The prospects list with demo leads, where each one came from and their stage.

Be careful with claims. Do not promise a result you cannot guarantee, and do not post client results without consent and context. Australian Consumer Law prohibits misleading or deceptive conduct, and testimonials count.

How do you deliver results and keep clients?

Life coaching clients stay when they feel progress between sessions, not only during them. A one-hour call every two weeks leaves 335 hours where the client is on their own. What happens in those hours decides whether they renew or refer.

A tablet showing a client's coaching journey and a phone showing a habit tracker on a cafe table
The client's My Coaching page with a 90-day journey on the tablet and the habit tracker on the phone, with demo data.

Programs, not just sessions

Turn your core package into a program: a weekly goal, two or three daily habits, and short tasks that build on each session. In Coachful, multi-week programs carry weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, goals with progress bars and streaks into the client's branded app. There are more than 40 ready-made program templates if you would rather adapt one than start from blank.

Check-ins

A 30-second morning or evening check-in (energy, mood, one win, one obstacle) gives you a running picture of each client. Coachful's client list marks each person as thriving, active, quiet or at risk, so you notice the client who has gone silent in week five before they quietly drop out. Michelle, the AI assistant, can brief you on a client before each session using their check-ins and notes.

Community

A small community turns individual clients into a group that encourages each other. Coachful creates a cohort group automatically when someone enrols in a program, with a feed, group chat and video events. Even 1:1 clients often value a monthly group Q&A.

Client community feed with a live Q&A and coach posts

Renewals and referrals

Plan the end of every package from the start. In the second-last session, review progress against the goals you set in session one and offer a lighter continuation (for example, monthly sessions with ongoing check-ins). Ask for a referral when the client is happiest, which is usually right after a breakthrough, not at the end.

If you are working toward an ICF credential, log your hours from day one. Coachful counts coaching hours and distinct clients against ACC, PCC and MCC thresholds and exports an ICF client coaching log with paid and pro bono hours. More on ICF hour tracking.

What does a 30/60/90-day launch plan look like?

Ninety days is enough to go from registered business to a handful of paying clients if you protect the time. This plan assumes about 10 to 15 hours a week alongside other work.

PhaseFocusDone when
Days 1 to 30ABN, structure, insurance quotes, agreement and privacy policy; niche sentence tested on 5 people; core package writtenYou can take a payment legally and explain your offer in one sentence
Days 31 to 60Website, booking page and payments live; program built with habits and check-ins; 30 to 50 warm messages sent; 10 discovery calls booked3 paying clients or a clear reason why not
Days 61 to 90One content channel twice a week; one partnership or workshop; testimonials from first clients; review pricing6 to 10 paying clients and a list of warm leads

If you reach day 60 with fewer than ten discovery calls, the problem is reach, not your offer. If you have plenty of calls but few sign-ups, look at your niche sentence, your price and how you close.

How much does it cost to start a life coaching business in Australia?

Outside training, a lean start costs mostly time: the ABN is free, a sole trader structure costs nothing to set up, and one platform can replace several subscriptions. A comfortable start adds a company, a lawyer-reviewed agreement and more marketing. The figures below are categories and examples rather than quotes; get your own prices for insurance and professional services.

The biggest line for most people is training, which is a choice rather than a requirement. The biggest hidden cost is time spent stitching tools together, which is why we suggest one platform and the free build service to get the website and program set up quickly.

What mistakes do new life coaches in Australia make?

  • Staying general. "Life coach" alone does not sell. Pick a transition and a person.
  • Selling single sessions. They are harder to sell, harder to get results with and harder to build an income on.
  • Copying US advice. American guides talk about LLCs, EINs and state licences. In Australia you deal with an ABN, ASIC, the ATO, the OAIC and Australian Consumer Law.
  • Forgetting GST. If your plan gets you past $75,000 a year, set prices that still work after GST, and register on time.
  • Drifting into therapy. Know your scope, write it down and refer early.
  • Overbuilding before selling. A blog, three lead magnets and a course before your first client is procrastination. Four pages and a booking link are enough.
  • Too many tools. Five subscriptions and five logins cost money and attention. Start with one home for the practice.
  • No system between sessions. Clients who only hear from you on call days drift, and drifting clients do not renew.

If you are starting with no coaching background at all, how to become a life coach with no experience covers the first steps in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licence to be a life coach in Australia?

No. Life coaching is not a licensed or regulated profession in Australia, so no licence or registration is needed to use the title. You still need normal business registrations, such as an ABN, and you must follow Australian Consumer Law and, where it applies, the Privacy Act.

Is an ICF credential recognised in Australia?

The ICF is an international body, and its ACC, PCC and MCC credentials are used by coaches in Australia as they are elsewhere. It is not a legal requirement, but corporate buyers often look for it. The ACC needs 100 coaching hours and 8 clients, so start logging hours early.

Are there nationally recognised life coaching courses?

Some providers advertise nationally recognised coaching qualifications. Before you enrol, search the course code on training.gov.au, the national register, to confirm it is current and see which providers are approved to deliver it. A course that is not on the register can still be good training, but it is not nationally recognised.

Do life coaches need an ABN?

If you are running coaching as a business, yes. An ABN identifies your business on invoices and to the ATO, and registering through the Australian Business Register is free. Avoid paid services that charge you to fill in the same form.

When does a life coach need to register for GST?

Once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 a year, or you expect it to. You can register voluntarily before that. Once registered, add 10% to prices for Australian clients and lodge activity statements; ask a tax agent about overseas clients.

Do life coaches need insurance in Australia?

It is not compulsory for most coaches, but professional indemnity insurance is the most relevant cover and many corporate clients require it. Add public liability if you meet clients in person or run workshops. Compare a few broker quotes and check the exclusions for your niche.

Can I be a life coach part-time while working another job?

Yes, and most people start that way. Early-morning, evening and weekend sessions suit many clients, and a program with check-ins between sessions keeps clients moving without extra calls. Check your employment contract for any conflict-of-interest or outside-work clauses.

What is Coachful's free white-glove service?

Every Coachful plan includes a free build service. You describe what you want (a website, funnel, program, course outline, email sequence or form), attach references and files, and the Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. They do not invent credentials, testimonials or prices, and the service does not include video recording, logo design or ad management.

Can I use Coachful with Australian clients and GST?

Yes. Payments run through your own Stripe account, and Stripe Tax is available for tax handling. Coachful charges a 0% platform fee, so you pay only Stripe's processing. Ask your tax agent how to set GST up for your situation.

How long does it take to get the first paying client?

It depends mostly on how many conversations you start. Messaging your warm network and booking discovery calls in the first month is the fastest route; waiting for a new website to bring traffic is the slowest. The 30/60/90-day plan above sets realistic checkpoints.

Ready to build your life coaching practice?

Register your ABN, write your niche sentence, and set up one place where clients book, sign, pay and do the work between sessions. Start a free trial of Coachful and ask the team to build your website and first program for free, so your setup weeks go into conversations rather than configuration.
