How to Start a High Performance Coaching Business in 90 Days

How to Start a High Performance Coaching Business in 90 Days

Here is how to start a high performance coaching business in about 90 days: choose one client type you can reach (founders, executives, sales leaders or athletes), package your coaching into two or three outcome-based offers, price them from the hours they take, set up a simple legal structure with a written coaching agreement, run everything from one platform, and spend most of your first month in direct conversations with people who already know you. The rest of this guide gives you the numbers, scripts, tables and checklists for each step.

This article assumes you have already decided to coach. If you are still weighing the field itself, our guide to mental performance coaching covers the skills and evidence base, and the general 10-step plan for starting a coaching business covers the basics for any niche. Here we focus on what is different when your promise is sustained high performance: higher-stakes clients, corporate buyers, measurable habits and a clear line between coaching and clinical care.

What are the steps, at a glance?

There are ten steps, and most coaches can finish them in 90 days while working part time. The costs below are typical ranges or examples; replace them with your own quotes.

StepTimeTypical cost
1. Pick one client type and one core outcome3 to 5 days$0
2. Validate demand with 15 to 20 conversations2 weeks$0
3. Design two or three offers3 days$0
4. Set prices from delivery hours and a revenue target1 day$0
5. Choose a structure, get an EIN, open a business bank account1 to 2 weeks$0 for a sole proprietorship and EIN; state fees for an LLC
6. Insurance and a written coaching agreement1 weekQuote-based insurance; optional attorney review
7. Set up your platform: booking, payments, contracts, programs, website2 to 7 daysPlatform subscription (see the cost table below)
8. Publish a one-page site and a booking funnel1 to 3 daysDomain name, about $15 a year as an example
9. Land your first 10 clients4 to 10 weeksMostly your time
10. Build a delivery and review rhythm that keeps clientsOngoingIncluded in your platform

Is high performance coaching a viable niche?

Yes, if you sell a specific, observable change to people or companies that already pay for performance. High performance coaching sits between executive coaching, mental performance work and habit coaching, so the buyers are real; the risk is sounding generic ("I help you be your best") in a crowded field.

Who actually pays?

  • Founders and owner-operators who pay personally because their output is the business. They want focus, decision quality and energy across long weeks.
  • Executives and senior managers, often paid for by an employer's development budget. The buyer may be HR or a department head, not the person being coached. See our pages for executive coaches and business coaches.
  • Sales leaders and quota carriers, where performance is already measured weekly and coaching ties directly to numbers the company tracks.
  • Athletes and coaches of athletes, from serious amateurs to professionals, who pay for preparation, routines and pressure management. Our guide to starting a mental performance coaching business goes deeper on this group.
  • Teams through corporate retainers, which are covered in how to structure a performance-based corporate coaching retainer.

Thinking of launching your coaching business?

Answer a few questions and Coachful builds it around you: your website, programs, booking and payments. Ready in minutes.

Build your platform

How do you check demand without a market report?

We are not quoting a market-size figure here, because most of the published ones come from companies selling to coaches. You get better evidence in two weeks of direct work:

  1. Twenty problem conversations. Ask people in your target group what slows their performance down, what they have already tried, and what they spent on it. If at least five describe the same problem in similar words and have paid for help before, you have a niche.
  2. A budget line check. For corporate buyers, ask whether coaching comes from a learning and development budget, a leadership program or a manager's discretionary spend. Each has a different approval path.
  3. A small paid test. Offer a four-week pilot to three people at a reduced, clearly stated price. Paid pilots tell you far more than compliments do.

Do you need a credential, and what is out of scope?

In the US there is generally no federal license for coaching itself, but the SBA notes that most small businesses need some combination of federal, state and local licenses and permits, depending on activity and location, so check your Secretary of State and local government sites (SBA: Apply for licenses and permits). Credentials such as ICF's ACC, PCC and MCC are optional but help with corporate buyers who ask about training and ethics standards. Several commercial programs sell "high performance" certifications; judge them on their supervised practice and ethics content rather than the title.

Scope line: high performance coaching is not therapy, medical care or treatment. It does not diagnose or treat burnout, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, eating disorders or substance use. If a client describes persistent low mood, panic, thoughts of self-harm, disordered eating or physical symptoms, pause the performance agenda and refer them to a licensed mental health professional or physician. Put this line in your agreement and repeat it in your first session.

How do you define the client and the offer?

Write one sentence that names the person, the situation and the measurable change, then build two or three packages around it. A good example: "I help first-time founders running a team of 5 to 30 people protect four hours of deep work a day and make faster decisions, without working weekends."

That sentence tells you what to track (deep work hours, decision turnaround, weekend hours), where to find clients (founder communities, accelerators, investors) and what the program should contain. Our guide to high-ticket coaching offer creation walks through the full brief.

Three example packages

These are illustrative structures, not market rates. Adjust names, length and contents to your client.

  • Performance Partnership (1:1, 6 months). Two 60-minute calls a month, a personal performance plan with weekly goals and daily habits, morning and evening check-ins, async messaging on weekdays, and a quarterly scorecard review.
  • Performance Sprint (group, 12 weeks). A cohort of 6 to 10 people, a weekly 90-minute group call, a shared program with modules on energy, focus, recovery and decision-making, a cohort community and individual habit tracking.
  • Team Performance Retainer (corporate, quarterly). A kickoff workshop, monthly group sessions for a leadership team, 1:1 sessions for a set number of leaders and an anonymized progress report for the sponsor.

The Offers page in Coachful with demo packages, each with its own cover image and price.

Keep the menu short. Two offers (one 1:1, one group or corporate) are easier to sell than five, and you can add a lower-priced course later once you know which questions clients ask most. Our page on coaching packages shows how they are built and sold inside one account.

How should you price high performance coaching?

Price from three numbers: your revenue target, the hours each offer really takes, and how many clients you can serve well. Then check that the result is something your buyer can approve. The table below uses example prices only to show the math; it is not a rate survey.

Offer (example)Example priceYour hours per monthEffective hourly rateNeeded for $10,000 a month
Performance Partnership, 1:1$1,200 per client per monthAbout 4 per client (2 calls, prep, async replies)About $3009 clients (about 36 hours)
Performance Sprint, group of 8$1,500 per person for 12 weeks ($500 a month)About 10 per cohort (4 group calls, prep, community)About $4002.5 cohorts running at once (about 25 hours)
Team Performance Retainer$4,000 per team per monthAbout 12 per teamAbout $3332.5 teams (about 30 hours)

All figures are before payment processing fees, software, insurance and tax. Two things to notice. First, groups and teams give you more revenue per hour but take longer to fill, so most new coaches start with 1:1 clients and add a cohort once they have five or six. Second, if your effective hourly rate falls below what you would charge for a single session, the package is underpriced or overloaded with calls.

On tax, plan for self-employment tax of 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare), which applies once net self-employment earnings reach $400 (IRS: Self-employment tax). For 2026, the Social Security part applies to combined wages and self-employment earnings up to $184,500 (IRS Form 1040-ES, 2026). Many coaches move a fixed share of every payment into a separate tax account; ask an accountant what share fits your situation.

For the selling side, see how to sell high-ticket coaching packages clearly and the seven-stage high-ticket coaching sales script.

What legal setup do you need?

At minimum: a business structure, a tax ID, a separate bank account, professional liability insurance, a signed coaching agreement for every client, honest marketing claims and a plan for client data. Rules vary by state and country, so check with an accountant or attorney before you rely on any of this.

Entity and tax ID

The SBA describes a sole proprietorship as automatic if you do business without registering another structure, and "a good choice for low-risk businesses and owners who want to test their business idea", with the trade-off that you can be held personally liable for business debts. An LLC protects owners from personal liability "in most instances", and its members still pay self-employment tax. An LLC can also elect S corporation taxation by filing Form 2553 with the IRS (SBA: Choose a business structure).

An EIN is free: the IRS issues it online "in minutes for free" and says "You never have to pay a fee for an EIN." If you form an LLC, register it with your state first, then apply (IRS: Get an EIN). Sole proprietors report business income on Schedule C (IRS: About Schedule C).

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in tax when you file, you generally need to make estimated payments during the year (IRS: Estimated taxes). For 2026 tax, the due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027.

Insurance

The SBA lists professional liability insurance for "Businesses that provide services to customers"; it "protects against financial loss as a result of malpractice, errors, and negligence." It also notes that the protection an LLC gives your personal assets "has limits" (SBA: Get business insurance). Get two or three quotes for professional liability, and ask whether coaching that touches stress, sleep or exercise changes the cover.

Coaching agreement

Your agreement should cover scope (including the scope line above), session count and length, between-session contact, confidentiality and its limits, payment terms and payment plans, cancellation and rescheduling, refunds, the fact that results are not guaranteed, and how either side ends the engagement. For corporate work, add who the sponsor is, what the sponsor sees (usually themes and attendance, not session content) and who owns any assessment data.

Send the agreement before the first call and do not start until it is signed. Our coaching contracts page shows how e-signature and storage work in Coachful.

Marketing claims and testimonials

High performance marketing leans on transformation stories, which is exactly where the FTC looks. In 2021 the FTC sent a Notice of Penalty Offenses on money-making claims to more than 1,100 businesses, including business coaching, warning that it is deceptive to misrepresent earnings as typical or to show results without clear context such as the time and effort involved and the share of participants who achieved them (FTC: Penalty Offenses Concerning Money-Making Opportunities). The FTC's consumer advice puts it plainly: "If it promises guaranteed income, large returns, or a 'proven system,' it's likely a scam" (FTC Consumer Advice).

For testimonials, endorsements "must be honest and not misleading", material connections must be disclosed, and exceptional results need proof that they are typical or a clear statement of what people generally achieve (FTC Endorsement Guides). Since October 21, 2024, the Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule also bans fake testimonials and incentives tied to positive sentiment (FTC: Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule). In practice: describe process and typical outcomes, never promise income, promotions or podium finishes, and get written permission for any client story.

Email and client data

Marketing email falls under CAN-SPAM: accurate headers, honest subject lines, a valid physical postal address, and an opt-out you honor within 10 business days (FTC: CAN-SPAM compliance guide). If you coach clients in the EU or UK, GDPR applies to the personal data you hold about them. Keep session notes factual and minimal, store them in one place rather than across apps and inboxes, and do not keep clinical records: if a client needs clinical care, that belongs with their clinician.

What tech stack do you need, and why make Coachful the home?

You need booking, payments, agreements, a place to deliver programs and track habits, a website with a booking funnel, and email. You can stitch five or six tools together, or run it all from one platform. We make Coachful, so weigh our view accordingly; the table shows what each approach involves, using vendor prices as listed in October 2026.

What Coachful is, in short: Coachful is a coaching platform where one subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant, with one login for the coach and one branded app for the client. It is built for coaches who deliver programs rather than single sessions, solo coaches growing into a small team, and coaches replacing four to six tools. It does not sync wearables, is not HIPAA-certified, does not support PayPal, and the client app ships under the Coachful listing with your branding rather than under your own App Store account. To start, take a free trial and request the free white-glove build described below. Current plans: (Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients).

Payments run through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account, with a 0% Coachful platform fee since August 2026, so you pay only the processor's fees. Michelle, the built-in AI assistant, works from your live practice data: it can build a program draft, write emails, summarize recorded sessions and brief you before each call (AI coaching assistant). Questions and planning are included in your Coachful membership; confirmed builds and changes use AI credits. If you are working toward an ICF credential, ICF hour tracking counts your hours and distinct clients against ACC, PCC and MCC thresholds.

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, choose "We'll build it for you · FREE", describe what you want (a website, a booking funnel, a sales page for your Performance Partnership, a 12-week program, an email sequence), attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files such as your logo, photos and existing copy, and the Coachful team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours. Nothing gets invented: no fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and gaps are left for you to fill. It does not include recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing. Recent anonymized builds include a business mentor for beauty professionals who got a 12-week mentorship sales page, a free start-up-guide funnel and rewritten follow-up emails, and a leadership coach with a website renewal days away who got one clean homepage with a repeated "talk with me" button. More examples are in our white-glove service guide.

How do you set up your website, booking and payments?

Publish a short site with one job: getting the right person onto a discovery call. Five pages are enough: Home, About, Work With Me, Results (process and typical outcomes, not income promises) and Contact, plus a privacy policy.

Coachful's section-based website builder includes 30 designed homepage templates, a blog, a custom domain and SEO settings, plus an Import website option if you already have a site (coach website builder). Booking, application, lead-magnet and checkout funnels track pixels and UTM parameters, so you can see which channel produced each call.

For booking, set availability rules, buffers between calls and a minimum notice period so you never take a call cold. Clients see times in their own time zone, calendars sync both ways with Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook, and each booking gets built-in video or an auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams link. Add intake questions to the discovery call booking (role, team size, the one performance problem they want solved, what they have tried), so every call starts with context. Email reminders are standard, with SMS 24 hours before and WhatsApp 1 hour before once messaging is enabled.

A demo September 2026 sessions calendar with 1:1 coaching, morning accountability calls and weekly group sessions.

For payments, sell the Performance Partnership as a monthly subscription or a payment plan, the Sprint as a one-time payment or plan, and add coupons or order bumps (for example, an extra review session) where they help. Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported, Stripe Tax can handle sales tax, and each transaction gets an invoice; corporate clients with their own billing process can be sent a manual invoice. See coaching payment software for the details.

Which one looks like you?

Coachful builds your coaching website from a few answers, in a design chosen for your niche, with programs, booking and payments ready behind it.

Build your platform

How do you land your first 10 clients?

Through direct, personal conversations with people who already trust you, then through small group workshops and referral partners. Ads and content come later, once you know which message converts.

Channels that fit high performance coaching

  • Your warm list. Write down 50 people from past jobs, teams, clubs and programs who fit or know someone who fits. For many new coaches, early clients come from this list or one introduction away from it.
  • Workshops inside companies and communities. Offer a 45-minute session on one topic (for example "protecting deep work in a team of 20") to a founder group, an accelerator cohort, a sales team or a sports club. End with an invitation to a short call.
  • LinkedIn with specific breakdowns. Post how a weekly planning routine or a pre-meeting reset works, step by step. Specific methods attract the right people; vague motivation attracts no one.
  • Referral partners. Executive recruiters, fractional CFOs, physiotherapists, strength coaches and therapists who see clients needing performance work but do not offer it. Agree on how you refer back when something is outside your scope.
  • Guest spots on niche podcasts and newsletters read by founders, sales leaders or athletes.

Scripts you can adapt

Warm outreach: "Hi Sam, I've started a coaching practice for founders who want to protect deep work and make decisions faster without working weekends. I'm taking on three pilot clients this month at a reduced rate in exchange for honest feedback. Do you know anyone running a 5 to 30 person team who's stretched thin? Happy to explain more if useful."

After a workshop: "Thanks for joining today's session on deep work. You mentioned meetings eating your mornings. If you'd like, book a 30-minute call and we'll map your week and see whether coaching makes sense. If it doesn't, you'll still leave with a plan."

Referral partner: "I work with sales leaders on routines, focus and recovery during heavy quarters. I don't do therapy or medical work, and I refer those clients out. If you see people who need the performance side, I'd be glad to talk, and I'll send clients your way when they need what you do."

Track every conversation as a prospect so nothing slips. In Coachful, discovery calls land on the Intakes page with upcoming calls and conversions, and leads from forms land on a Prospects board.

The Intakes page tracks discovery calls, upcoming bookings and conversions (demo data).

On the call itself, ask more than you talk, summarize their problem in their words, explain the offer and price plainly, and let them decide without pressure. Closing high-ticket coaching clients and eight common coaching objections cover the conversation in detail.

How do you deliver results and keep clients?

Clients renew when they can see progress between sessions, so design the week, not just the call. A high performance program usually combines a weekly goal, a small number of daily habits, short check-ins and a monthly or quarterly review against a scorecard.

A weekly rhythm that works

  • Monday: the client sets three weekly priorities in their program.
  • Daily: a 60-second morning check-in (energy 1 to 10, sleep hours, today's one priority) and an evening check-in (did the priority happen, what got in the way).
  • Habits: two to four, chosen with the client, such as a deep work block, a shutdown routine, a training session or a screen-off time.
  • Sessions: review the check-in trend first, then work on the obstacle the data shows.
  • Quarterly: a formal review of the scorecard and goals, with a renewal conversation. Our quarterly coaching performance review templates give you the format.

Coachful's programs are built around this loop: multi-week programs with weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, morning and evening check-ins, goals with progress bars and streaks (coaching program software). More than 40 ready-to-film program templates give you a starting structure. This short walkthrough shows how check-ins are set up:

On the client side, habits and tasks roll up into each goal, so a founder can see that their deep work streak and their decision log both feed the goal they set in week one.

On the coach side, every client record holds goals, check-ins, habits, notes, intake answers, payments and sessions, with a status of thriving, active, quiet or at risk. "Quiet" is your early warning: a client who stops checking in is often drifting toward cancelling. Reach out that week, not at renewal time. Preventing avoidable churn in high-ticket coaching covers the full approach.

For groups, Coachful creates a cohort group automatically when someone enrolls in a program, with a community feed, group chat and video events (group coaching software). Peer accountability can suit performance clients, many of whom respond well to a visible standard.

What does a 30/60/90-day launch plan look like?

Days 1 to 30 are for validation and setup, days 31 to 60 for your first paying clients, and days 61 to 90 for a repeatable system and your first group offer.

PhaseFocusKey actionsDone when
Days 1 to 30Validate and set upWrite the one-sentence niche; hold 20 problem conversations; choose a structure and get an EIN; get insurance quotes; draft the agreement; request your website and booking funnel through the white-glove buildSite live, agreement ready, 3 pilot clients agreed
Days 31 to 60First paying clientsRun pilots on a real program with check-ins; reach out to the full warm list of 50; deliver one workshop; sign two referral partners; collect written feedback with permission5 paying 1:1 clients and a weekly pipeline of 3 or more calls

These targets are examples. If you only reach three paying clients by day 60, the usual fix is more conversations, not a new website.

How much does it cost to start?

A lean launch can cost little beyond software and insurance; a more comfortable one adds an LLC, legal review and some professional branding. Figures other than the official $0 items are examples to replace with your own quotes. Our line-by-line coaching startup budget goes further.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Selling "peak performance" to everyone. Pick one client type. You can widen later.
  • Promising outcomes you cannot control. Revenue, promotions and race times depend on more than coaching, and FTC guidance treats unsupported earnings claims as deceptive.
  • Drifting into clinical territory. Burnout and anxiety come up often in this niche. Refer out and document that you did.
  • All calls, no between-session structure. Without check-ins and habits, clients forget the plan by Wednesday.
  • Too many tools. Every extra login is a place where a client stops engaging.
  • Underpricing pilots forever. Set an end date for pilot pricing in writing.
  • Skipping the agreement because the first clients are friends.
  • Waiting for a perfect website before talking to anyone.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a certification to start a high performance coaching business?

Coaching itself is generally not a licensed profession in the US, though you still need any business licenses your state or city requires. A recognized credential such as an ICF credential helps with corporate buyers and gives you an ethics framework. Many coaches start while completing training and track their hours as they go.

Is high performance coaching the same as therapy?

No. Coaching works with functioning people on goals, routines and decisions; it does not diagnose or treat mental health or medical conditions. If a client shows signs of depression, anxiety, burnout, disordered eating or substance problems, refer them to a licensed professional. State this in your agreement.

How much should I charge?

Start from your revenue target and the hours each offer takes, as in the pricing table above, then test the price in real sales conversations. Raise it when you are consistently full or when most prospects accept without hesitation. The example prices in this article illustrate the math and are not market rates.

Should I form an LLC right away?

Not necessarily. The SBA describes a sole proprietorship as a reasonable way to test a low-risk business idea, while an LLC adds liability protection in most instances. Many coaches start as sole proprietors with insurance and form an LLC once revenue is steady; check with an accountant or attorney for your state.

How long does it take to get the first clients?

It depends mostly on how many conversations you have. Direct outreach to a warm list and workshops create conversations quickly, while content alone takes longer to build trust. Treat the 90-day plan as a target, not a promise.

Can I run group programs and corporate work from the same platform?

Yes. In Coachful, 1:1 programs, cohort programs with automatic cohort groups and team engagements all live in one account, and team plans add coach seats if you bring on associates. Corporate sponsors can be invoiced manually where they need it.

What is Coachful's free white-glove service?

It is a build service included on every plan. You describe what you need, such as a website, funnel, sales page, program or email sequence, attach references and files, and the Coachful team builds it in your account, usually within about 24 hours. It leaves gaps for you rather than inventing credentials, testimonials or prices, and does not cover video recording, logos or ads.

What does Coachful not do?

It does not sync with Garmin, Fitbit, Whoop or Oura, is not HIPAA-certified and is not meant for clinical records or insurance billing, and it does not accept PayPal. There is no permanent free plan, though there is a free trial. The client app carries your branding inside the Coachful app rather than appearing as your own App Store listing.

Can I share client results in my marketing?

Yes, with written permission and honest context. FTC guidance says testimonials must reflect real experiences, connections must be disclosed, and exceptional results need to be shown as exceptional or backed by evidence that they are typical. Avoid income or outcome guarantees.

Ready to build your high performance coaching business?

Pick your client, write your one-sentence promise and book your first ten conversations this week. While you do that, let the platform side get built for you: start a free trial, request your website, booking funnel and first program through the free white-glove build, and launch with one login for you and one branded app for your clients. Compare plans on the plans page.
