How to Start a Meditation Coaching Business: A 90-Day Plan

How to Start a Meditation Coaching Business: A 90-Day Plan

To start a meditation coaching business, choose one kind of client you can help, turn your teaching into a 6 to 12 week program with a clear outcome, price it from an income target, register the business and insure it, then put booking, payments, agreements and daily practice tracking in one place. Your first 10 clients will come from conversations and referral partners, not ads. This guide on how to start a meditation coaching business covers each of those steps with tables, worked example prices, outreach scripts and a 90-day launch plan.

It is written for people who already meditate seriously, may already teach, and have decided to coach. The question here is not whether you should, but how to build a practice that pays and keeps clients sitting after week three. We make Coachful, the coaching platform used for the setup examples, so read the software sections with that in mind.

What are the steps, at a glance?

There are eight steps, and most new meditation coaches can finish the first six in four to six weeks. Times below are planning estimates, and costs are the ones you control directly.

If you want the general version of this plan for any coaching niche, How to Start a Coaching Business in 2026 covers it. This article stays specific to meditation.

Is meditation coaching a viable business?

Yes, if you sell a change in someone's life and the accountability to get there, rather than access to meditations. Guided audio is abundant and cheap. What people struggle to find is a person who helps them build a daily practice that survives a busy month.

The demand side is real. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, citing the National Health Interview Survey, the share of U.S. adults who practiced meditation more than doubled between 2002 and 2022, from 7.5 to 17.3 percent, and meditation was the most popular of the seven complementary approaches measured in 2022, ahead of yoga at 15.8 percent (NCCIH, Meditation and Mindfulness: Effectiveness and Safety). Millions of people have tried it. A smaller group wants help making it stick, and that group is your market.

Who actually pays for meditation coaching?

  • Stalled practitioners. People who have used apps for months, keep breaking the streak, and want a person to answer to.
  • Professionals under pressure. Managers, founders, clinicians and lawyers who want steadier attention and better recovery from stress, and who already pay for other forms of professional development.
  • Employers and teams. People teams and wellbeing leads who buy short group programs for staff.
  • Studios, retreats and practitioners. Yoga studios, retreat hosts and other wellness professionals who want a meditation program they can offer their own clients.

Thinking of launching your coaching business?

Answer a few questions and Coachful builds it around you: your website, programs, booking and payments. Ready in minutes.

Build your platform

Where does coaching stop and treatment start?

Meditation coaching is not mental health treatment, and your business should say so on the website, in the agreement and on the intake form. Meditation is not risk-free for everyone: NCCIH describes a 2020 review of 83 studies with 6,703 participants that concluded about 8 percent of participants had a negative effect from practicing meditation, similar to the rate reported for psychological therapies, with anxiety and depression the most commonly reported effects. NCCIH also advises people not to use meditation to replace conventional care or to postpone seeing a health care provider (NCCIH).

A workable scope line for your materials: "I teach meditation and coach you to build a consistent practice. I do not diagnose or treat any medical or mental health condition, and coaching is not a substitute for care from a licensed professional." Then decide in advance when you refer out: active trauma symptoms, thoughts of self-harm, a current eating disorder, psychosis or mania, or any client whose distress rises as practice deepens. Keep two or three local therapists' names ready, and pause the coaching while they get support.

Do you need a credential?

Coaching is largely unregulated, so there is no single credential every meditation coach must hold, but you still need to check state, county and city licence rules for your activity and location (SBA, Apply for licenses and permits). Clients will ask anyway: NCCIH tells consumers to ask about an instructor's training and experience. List your teacher training, retreat hours and any coach training plainly on your About page. If you are also pursuing an ICF credential, track your coaching hours from day one, because back-filling a log is painful. Related niches with overlapping clients are covered in how to start a wellness coaching business and how to start a health coaching business.

Who is your client and what will you sell them?

Pick one client and one outcome before you write a single web page. "Meditation for everyone" sells to no one; "a 10-minute daily practice for managers who lie awake replaying meetings" sells, because the reader recognises themselves.

Use this sentence and fill it in: I help [specific person] go from [current state] to [observable change] in [weeks], through [how you deliver]. Three examples:

  • I help new team leads go from reactive, scattered days to a steady 15-minute morning practice and a pause-before-responding habit in 6 weeks, through weekly 1:1 calls and daily check-ins.
  • I help people who have quit meditation apps three times go from occasional sits to 30 consecutive days of practice in 8 weeks, through a small group cohort.
  • I help small teams go from no shared wellbeing practice to a five-minute team sit before weekly meetings in 4 weeks, through live group sessions and a practice tracker.

What packages work for meditation coaching?

Two or three packages are enough: one 1:1 program, one group program, and an ongoing continuation option for graduates. Here is how they can look:

  1. Daily Sit Foundations (1:1, 6 weeks). Six 45-minute calls, a written practice plan, a daily meditation habit with a streak, a short morning check-in (sleep, mood, intention) and an evening check-in (did you sit, what got in the way), plus a small audio library you record.
  2. Steady Mind Circle (group, 8 weeks, up to 12 people). A weekly 75-minute live group sit with teaching and Q&A, a private group chat, the same habit and check-in structure, and a short course with one lesson per week.
  3. Practice Continuation (monthly). Two 30-minute calls a month, continued check-ins and community access, for anyone who finished either program.

For teams, sell the group program to an employer as a fixed-fee series rather than per head, and keep it short. Notice that every package has a daily element. That is the difference between a coach and a class, and it is also what drives renewals. For more on package design, see coaching packages and the comparison in 10 coaching business models compared.

Coachful offers page with three live offer cards and their demo prices
The Offers page with demo offers; each card is a package a client can buy.

How should you price meditation coaching?

Start from the income you need, divide it across a realistic mix of packages, and check that the hourly result covers your unpaid time. Do not start from what a drop-in meditation class costs, because you are not selling a class.

The table below is an illustrative example, not market data. The prices and client numbers are invented to show the method; replace them with your own.

Package (example)Example priceVolume in a yearRevenueDelivery hours
Daily Sit Foundations, 1:1, 6 weeks$90030 clients$27,000195 (6 calls of 45 min plus about 2 h admin each)
Steady Mind Circle, group, 8 weeks$350 per seat4 cohorts of 12 (48 seats)$16,80056 (10 h live plus 4 h prep per cohort)
Team series, 4 sessions$2,400 per team4 teams$9,60032 (4 h live plus 4 h prep per team)
Practice Continuation, monthly$120 per month8 clients on average, 12 months$11,52096 (1 h per client per month)
Total (example)$64,920379 hours, about $171 per delivery hour

Three things the example shows. First, the group program brings in about 26 percent of revenue for under 15 percent of the delivery hours, so plan it from the start. Second, $171 per delivery hour is not your take-home: you also spend unpaid hours on marketing, content and admin, and you pay processing fees, software, insurance and tax. Third, US self-employment tax alone is 15.3 percent (12.4 percent Social Security plus 2.9 percent Medicare) on net earnings, and it applies once net earnings from self-employment reach $400 (IRS, Self-employment tax).

If the number you need requires more 1:1 clients than you have hours for, raise the price, shift weight to groups, or lengthen programs. For a fuller budget, see how much it costs to start a coaching business and the one-page coaching business plan template.

What legal setup does a meditation coaching business need?

In the US you need a business structure, an EIN if you form an entity or want one for banking, any local licences, professional liability insurance, a written coaching agreement, a plan for client data and a tax routine. Rules differ by state and country, so check the specifics with an accountant or attorney.

Structure and EIN

A sole proprietorship is automatic if you do business without registering another structure. The SBA calls it "a good choice for low-risk businesses and owners who want to test their business idea," but you can be held personally liable for business debts. An LLC protects owners from personal liability "in most instances"; profits can pass through without corporate tax, and members still pay self-employment tax. An S corp is a tax election filed with the IRS on Form 2553, and an LLC can be taxed as one (SBA, Choose a business structure).

The IRS issues an EIN online "in minutes for free," and you never have to pay a fee for one. Form your LLC with the state first, then apply (IRS, Get an employer identification number). As a sole proprietor you report income on Schedule C.

Insurance

Professional liability insurance is the one to price first. The SBA describes it as cover for "Businesses that provide services to customers" that "protects against financial loss as a result of malpractice, errors, and negligence," and notes that the liability protection of an LLC or corporation "has limits" (SBA, Get business insurance). If you teach in person, ask the insurer about general liability too, and ask any studio you rent from what cover they require.

Your coaching agreement

Send the agreement before the first call and get it signed. For meditation coaching, include:

  • The scope line above, and a statement that the client stays responsible for their own health care.
  • A referral clause: you may pause or end coaching and suggest professional support if it appears needed.
  • A health disclosure prompt: the client agrees to tell you about conditions that could affect practice (for example, trauma history or a current mental health diagnosis), without you giving medical advice about them.
  • Program length, payment terms, refunds, rescheduling and no-show policy.
  • Consent for recording calls, if you record them.
  • Confidentiality and its limits.

See coaching contracts for how e-signature fits into onboarding.

Client data

Your intake form will collect sensitive information about stress, sleep and mental health. Collect only what you need for coaching, store it in one place, and know how to export or delete it on request. If you work with clients in the EU or UK, GDPR applies to you; if you work inside a US clinical setting or bill insurance, HIPAA questions come up and you need a compliant system and legal advice. Coachful is GDPR-ready but is not HIPAA-certified and does not sign BAAs, so it is not the tool for clinical record-keeping or insurance billing.

Taxes and marketing rules

  • Estimated tax. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file, you generally need to make estimated payments (IRS, Estimated taxes). The remaining 2026 payment is due January 15, 2027 (IRS Form 1040-ES (2026)).
  • Testimonials. Endorsements "must be honest and not misleading," a paid or personal connection must be disclosed, and exceptional results need proof that they are what people generally achieve (FTC, Endorsement Guides). Since October 21, 2024, fake reviews and testimonials can bring civil penalties under the Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule (FTC). In practice: do not promise that meditation will cure anxiety or insomnia, and do not quote a client's best week as typical.
  • Your newsletter. Commercial email needs a valid physical postal address and a working opt-out honored within 10 business days (FTC, CAN-SPAM Act compliance guide).

What software do you need to run a meditation coaching business?

You need booking, payments, agreements, a place to deliver programs with daily habits and check-ins, somewhere to host audio and lessons, a group space, a website and email. You can assemble that from five or six tools, or run it from one platform. The table compares the two approaches; third-party prices are as listed in October 2026.

ToolJob in a meditation practiceListed price
CoachfulBooking, payments, agreements, programs with habits and check-ins, courses and audio, community, website, funnels and email, under one loginLite: $29/month for up to 5 clients
Calendly (Standard)Booking pages only$10 per seat per month, billed annually
HoneyBook (Starter)Contracts and invoices; scheduler starts on Essentials$29 per month billed annually; Essentials $59 per month
Kit (Creator)Newsletter and email sequencesFrom $39 per month for up to 1,000 subscribers
Skool (Hobby)Community and course classroom$9 per month plus 10% + 30¢ per transaction
Stan Store (Creator)Link-in-bio storefront$29 per month
Kajabi (Basic)Courses, community, website and email in place of the three rows above$179 per month ($143 billed annually)

The separate stack in rows two to six adds up to about $116 a month at listed prices (some billed annually), before Skool's transaction fees, and none of those tools tracks a client's daily practice or morning check-in. That gap matters more for meditation than for most niches, because the product is the daily sit. A walkthrough of every piece is in online coaching business software.

How do you set up the practice in Coachful?

Set up Coachful as the home for the whole client journey: the client books, signs, pays and then practices inside one branded app, while you see every client's practice data in one place. Here is the setup in the order you would do it for a meditation practice.

What Coachful is, in brief. Coachful is a coaching platform where one subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant, with one login for the coach and one branded app for the client. It suits coaches who deliver programs rather than single sessions, solo coaches who may grow into a small team, and anyone replacing four to six tools. It does not do clinical record-keeping, it is not HIPAA-certified, it does not take PayPal, and the client app runs under the Coachful listing with your branding rather than under your own App Store account. To start, open a free trial, then ask the team to build your site or first program through the free white-glove build.

1. Build the daily practice program

Programs run for multiple weeks with weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, morning and evening check-ins, goals with progress bars, and streaks. For Daily Sit Foundations, that means one habit ("sit for 10 minutes"), a morning check-in asking about sleep and intention, an evening check-in asking whether they sat and what got in the way, and a weekly goal such as "add a two-minute pause before your first meeting."

Check-ins live in the coaching flows library, where Welcome, Daily and Weekly flows and multi-week Journeys sit side by side. This short walkthrough shows how check-ins are set up:

If you would rather adapt than start blank, there are more than 40 ready-to-film program templates and journey templates to edit. Michelle, the built-in AI assistant, can also draft a program from your description; questions and planning are included in your Coachful membership, and confirmed builds use AI credits.

Build your platform

2. Add audio, lessons and the group space

Courses support modules, lessons, drip release and completion tracking, and downloads, videos and other resources are delivered into the client's branded home and app. Record your guided sits once and attach them to the week they belong to. When someone enrolls in the Steady Mind Circle, a cohort group is created automatically, with a community feed, group chat, direct messages and video events for the weekly live sit. More on that in group coaching software.

3. Agreements, intake and ICF hours

Coaching agreements with e-signature go out before the first call and are stored on the client record. Intake questions on the booking page capture practice history and the health disclosure your agreement asks for. If you are working toward an ICF credential, Coachful counts coaching hours and distinct clients against ACC, PCC and MCC thresholds and exports an ICF client coaching log (ICF hour tracking).

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, choose "We'll build it for you" and describe what you want: a website, a funnel, a sales page, a program, a course outline, an email sequence, a link-in-bio page and more. You can attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files such as your logo, photos and existing copy. The Coachful team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours. Nothing is invented: no fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and gaps are left for you to fill. It does not include recording your meditations, logo design or ad management. Recent builds include a five-page site in sage and cream for a menopause and midlife health coach starting from nothing, with every button leading to a 20-minute consultation, and a homepage and About page rebuilt for a somatic coach leaving Kajabi, with the contact form connected. Details are in the white-glove service guide.

How do you set up your website, booking and payments?

Your website needs four pages: a homepage that names your client and outcome, an About page with your training, a Work With Me page with your packages, and a contact or booking page. Add the scope line in the footer and on the Work With Me page.

Coachful's section-based website builder includes a blog, custom domain, SEO settings and 30 designed homepage templates, with an Import website option if you already have a site. Calm wellness templates suit meditation well; Sanctuary is one of them. If you are not comfortable building pages, starting a coaching business when you are not tech-savvy walks through the alternatives, and the coach website builder page shows the editor.

Booking. Booking pages support availability rules, buffers, minimum notice and time-zone detection, with two-way Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook calendar sync. Calls can use built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links. Email reminders are standard, and SMS (24 hours before) and WhatsApp (1 hour before) reminders work once messaging is enabled. Keep your intro call at 20 to 30 minutes and ask three intake questions: what they have tried, what gets in the way, and any health considerations you should know about. See scheduling software for the details.

Payments. Clients pay through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account: one-time, subscriptions, payment plans, coupons and refunds, with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Use a subscription for Practice Continuation and offer a two- or three-part payment plan on the 1:1 program. Coachful charges a 0% platform fee on these payments (since August 2026), so you pay only Stripe or Razorpay processing. Every transaction gets an invoice, and you can create manual invoices for team contracts. PayPal is not supported.

How do you get your first 10 meditation coaching clients?

Talk to people directly, run one recurring live sit as your front door, and build two or three referral partnerships. Ten clients usually takes 30 to 50 real conversations, so plan for volume, not polish.

Channel 1: your warm list

Write down 50 people who know you meditate. Send a personal message, not a broadcast:

"Hi Sam, I'm starting a 6-week coaching program for people who want a daily meditation practice that actually sticks, mostly busy managers. I'm taking five people at a founding price. Do you know anyone who keeps restarting their practice and would want help? Happy to talk with them for 20 minutes."

Asking for referrals rather than asking them to buy keeps it comfortable, and people often answer for themselves.

Channel 2: a monthly live group sit

Host a 30-minute online sit with ten minutes of teaching, once a month, open to anyone who registers. At the end, invite people who want to build a daily practice to book an intro call. The registration list becomes your email list. In Coachful, a lead-magnet funnel handles registration, and an email sequence sends reminders and a follow-up.

The Funnels page with demo webinar, lead magnet and program launch funnels.

Channel 3: studios and wellness practitioners

Yoga studio owners, massage therapists, health coaches and therapists all meet people who need a steady practice but do not teach it themselves. Offer a referral relationship that runs both ways, and be explicit that you send clinical concerns to them:

"Hi Priya, I coach people to build a daily meditation practice over six weeks. Some of your clients probably ask how to keep going between classes. I'd like to offer your members a monthly live sit at no cost to the studio, and when I see clients who need more than coaching, I refer them to professionals I trust. Could we talk for 15 minutes next week?"

Channel 4: one team pilot

Ask people in your network who work in HR or lead teams. Offer a single pilot session for one team, then propose the four-session series. Lead with the practical outcome ("a five-minute reset before weekly meetings") rather than wellbeing language.

Track every conversation

Log each lead and intro call so you can see what converts. Coachful's Prospects and Intakes pages track leads by stage and intake calls with a conversion rate. Review the numbers monthly using these six KPIs.

The Intakes page with demo numbers: 10 intakes, 3 upcoming, 2 converted.

How do you keep meditation clients practicing and renewing?

Retention comes from daily contact with the practice, not from more calls. Clients who sit most days and hear from you between sessions finish the program and ask what is next; clients who only see you weekly drift by week three.

  • Daily habit and streak. One habit, one duration, visible every day. Raise the duration only after two clean weeks.
  • Morning and evening check-ins. Short questions, under a minute to answer. Read them before each call so the session starts from real data.
  • Watch for drift. Each client record shows a status of thriving, active, quiet or at risk. Message a "quiet" client the same day with something small: "Two minutes today counts."
  • Pre-session briefings. Michelle briefs you before each session from the client's check-ins, habits and notes, and can summarize recorded sessions.
  • Between-session support. You can configure an AI Coach, an AI version of you that selected clients chat with between sessions. Set it to answer practice questions only, and to point anything clinical back to you and to professional care.
  • Community. For group clients, the cohort feed and weekly live sit carry much of the motivation. Post one short prompt a day.
  • Offer continuation in week 5. Before the program ends, show the client their streak and check-in history and offer the monthly continuation.

Here is how program delivery looks in a short walkthrough:

What does a 30/60/90-day launch plan look like?

Spend the first month building, the second selling, and the third delivering and refining. The plan assumes 10 to 15 hours a week.

How much does it cost to start a meditation coaching business?

A lean start can cost little beyond software, insurance and a decent microphone; a comfortable start adds an entity, legal review and a small marketing budget. Equipment and marketing figures below are example budgets, not quotes.

What mistakes do new meditation coaches make?

  • Selling meditations instead of change. Clients can get guided audio anywhere. Sell the habit, the accountability and the outcome.
  • Pricing per session. Per-session pricing invites cancellations and makes progress feel optional. Sell programs with a start and an end.
  • No scope line or referral plan. Decide in advance what is outside coaching and who you refer to. Write it into the agreement.
  • Health claims in marketing. "Cure your anxiety in 6 weeks" is a claim you cannot support, and the FTC's endorsement rules apply to testimonials that imply it.
  • A broad niche. "Mindfulness for everyone" gives people no reason to choose you this month.
  • Nothing between sessions. If clients only hear from you weekly, practice collapses by week three.
  • Weeks spent on tools. Configuring six apps before you have a client delays the only thing that matters, which is conversations.
  • Intro calls with no next step. End every intro call with a clear offer, a start date and a link to the agreement and payment.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a certification to be a meditation coach?

Coaching is largely unregulated, so there is no single required credential, but check state and local licence rules for your activity. Clients are advised by NCCIH to ask about an instructor's training and experience, so state yours clearly. A teacher training plus coach training is a strong combination.

Is meditation coaching the same as therapy?

No. Meditation coaching teaches practice and supports habit change; it does not diagnose or treat any condition. Put a scope line in your agreement and website, and refer clients to licensed professionals when symptoms are clinical or worsen with practice.

How much should I charge for meditation coaching?

Work backwards from your income target across a mix of 1:1, group and monthly continuation packages, then check the hourly figure covers unpaid marketing and admin time. The example in this article reaches about $65,000 in revenue from 379 delivery hours, but the prices in it are illustrative, not market rates.

Do I need an LLC to start?

No. A sole proprietorship is automatic, and the SBA describes it as a reasonable choice for low-risk businesses testing an idea, though it leaves you personally liable for business debts. An LLC adds liability protection in most instances. Check with an accountant or attorney for your state.

Can I run a meditation coaching business alongside a job?

Yes. Group programs and evening or early-morning live sits fit around a job, and daily check-ins run without you being online. Check your employment contract for outside-work clauses before you start.

What is Coachful's free white-glove build?

It is a service on every plan: you describe what you want built, such as a website, funnel, program or email sequence, attach references, and the Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. It does not include recording your meditations, logo design or ad management.

Can clients track a daily meditation habit in Coachful?

Yes. Programs include habits with streaks, daily tasks and morning and evening check-ins, and clients see them in your branded app. You see completion and check-in data on each client record.

Is Coachful HIPAA-compliant?

No. Coachful is GDPR-ready but not HIPAA-certified and does not sign a BAA, so it is not suitable for clinical record-keeping or insurance billing. For coaching outside clinical settings, keep intake questions limited to what coaching needs.

Can I take PayPal payments?

Not in Coachful. Payments run through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account, with cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, subscriptions and payment plans.

How long does it take to get the first clients?

The plan above aims for 3 to 5 founding clients between days 31 and 60, from 20 to 30 intro calls. Your timeline depends on how many conversations you start each week, which is the number to track.

Where should you start this week?

Write your client sentence, draft the Daily Sit Foundations program, and send ten warm messages before you touch any software. When you are ready to set up, open a Coachful trial, request a white-glove build of your website or first program, and spend your own time on conversations. If you want to compare platforms first, see our comparison pages, or read how other coaches in adjacent niches set up on the mindset coaches and spiritual coaches pages.
