Recovery Coach Salary: What You Can Earn in 2026

Recovery Coach Salary: What You Can Earn in 2026

A recovery coach salary in 2026 depends almost entirely on whether someone else employs you. No public data source we could verify in November 2026 publishes a reliable figure for the exact title "recovery coach", so the honest benchmarks are adjacent ones: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median for substance abuse, behavioral disorder and mental health counselors at $59,350 a year (May 2025), and our 2026 Coaching Business Report, citing PayScale, ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor, puts health and wellness coaching, the nearest coaching category, at $52,000 to $77,000 a year. Employed peer recovery roles usually pay below the licensed-counselor figure; independent recovery coaches set their own rates, and their income is clients multiplied by price, minus costs.

That split shapes everything below. Peer recovery specialists in treatment centers, hospitals and state programs earn a wage with benefits, a supervisor and a caseload they did not choose. Independent sober and recovery coaches earn whatever their practice brings in, which can be far more or far less. Most independents run that practice on one platform; we make Coachful, a coaching platform that puts booking, payments, agreements, daily check-ins, programs and a branded client app under one login, and this guide shows where it fits once you go private.

If you are still deciding whether to enter the field at all, start with how to become a recovery coach or, for the private sober-coaching route, how to become a sobriety coach. For the broader picture across niches, see life coach salary and health coach salary. This page stays on recovery work.

How much does a recovery coach make in 2026?

Expect employed peer recovery work to pay a modest hourly wage, and expect independent practice income to range from a side income to a full professional salary depending on client count and price. The table shows every figure we could stand behind, what each one actually measures and when it was published or seen.

Two cautions apply to every row. First, salary sites mix job titles: "recovery coach" listings include peer specialists at nonprofits, sober companions at private agencies and staff at recovery residences, which pay very differently. Second, a self-employed hourly rate is not an hourly wage. Out of it come unbooked hours, software, insurance, marketing and both halves of payroll tax. To get a figure for your own area, search current postings on job boards and your state's workforce site for "peer recovery specialist" and read the posted ranges; that tells you more than any national average.

Where do recovery coaches work, and what does each path pay?

Employed recovery coaches work where public or insurance funding pays for peer support; independent coaches work where clients or families pay privately. Each setting asks for different credentials and trades income ceiling for stability.

SettingTypical roleHow pay worksWhat it demands
Treatment centers (inpatient and outpatient)Peer recovery specialist on a clinical teamHourly wage or salary, often with benefitsState peer certification, supervision, documentation, set shifts
Hospitals and emergency departmentsPeer recovery coach who meets patients after an overdose or admissionHourly wage, sometimes on-call payCertification, background check, comfort with crisis settings
Recovery community organizations and nonprofitsRecovery coach, group facilitator, outreach workerGrant-funded wage; budgets can change year to yearLived experience, peer certification, community ties
State and county programs, drug courts, reentry servicesPeer specialist attached to a programPublic pay scale or contractor rateState certification that matches the program's funding rules
Recovery residences and sober livingHouse manager or resident coachWage, sometimes with housingHouse rules enforcement, evenings and weekends
Independent practicePrivate recovery, sober or family recovery coachYour own fees: packages, monthly retainers, groupsMarketing, sales, a clear scope, insurance, a business setup

Employed roles give you training hours, supervision and a steady wage, and many states fund peer support through public programs, which usually requires certification and a qualifying employer. The ceiling is the pay scale. Independent practice has no ceiling and no floor: in the first year, many coaches earn less than they would in a peer role, and an established practice with retainers and groups can earn more.

Many coaches do both. A few years in peer work builds supervised experience, referral relationships and a sense of which clients you serve best. Then a private practice starts on evenings and weekends and takes over when it covers the bills.

What do independent recovery coaches charge?

The rates dataset we publish has no figure specific to recovery coaching, so set your price from the structure of your offer instead of borrowing a number. The nearest category, health and wellness coaching, runs $75 to $200 an hour according to PayScale and community estimates in our 2026 Coaching Business Report; treat that as context, not as a recovery rate.

Recovery clients rarely buy single hours. They buy support across the hardest months: early sobriety, the return home from treatment, the first holidays, the first relapse scare. Price that support as a period of time with a defined level of contact. Here is how to build a price in five steps.

  1. Decide the income you need. Write the yearly net figure that covers your living costs and savings, then add taxes and business costs to get the gross target.
  2. Count real capacity. Recovery coaching often involves between-session texts and urgent calls. If a client takes two hours a week including messages, 15 clients is 30 hours, which is close to full for one person.
  3. Divide target by capacity. A gross target of $70,000 across 15 clients for 46 working weeks is about $101 per client per week, or roughly $390 per client per month spread over 12 months.
  4. Define what the price includes. Weekly calls, daily check-ins, message response times, family sessions, crisis protocol. A clear inclusion list prevents "just one more call" from eating your margin.
  5. Test it on real prospects. Quote the price on discovery calls for a month. If nearly everyone says yes, it is likely too low; if nobody does, the offer or the audience needs work before the price does.

Common package shapes in recovery coaching are a 90-day early-recovery package, an ongoing monthly retainer with weekly calls and daily check-ins, a family recovery package for parents or partners, and a transition package for people leaving residential treatment. For more on structuring them, see coaching packages.

How much can a recovery coaching practice earn? The math at three sizes

Net income for an independent recovery coach is active clients times weekly price times working weeks, minus costs. The table below is illustrative: the prices and client counts are examples to show the arithmetic, not survey data or a promise of results.

Practice size (illustrative)Active clientsPrice per client per weekWorking weeksGross per yearBusiness costsNet before income tax
Side practice5$7546$17,250$2,500$14,750
Growing practice12$10046$55,200$5,000$50,200
Full practice18 one-to-one plus a 10-person group at $40 a week$120 (one-to-one)46$117,760$10,000$107,760

Check the full-practice row: 18 clients at $120 for 46 weeks is $99,360, and a 10-person group at $40 each for 46 weeks adds $18,400, for $117,760. The group is where the jump comes from. One-to-one work alone tops out around the number of people you can hold in your week.

In the U.S., self-employed coaches also pay self-employment tax of 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare) once net earnings reach $400, according to the IRS, and generally make estimated tax payments if they expect to owe $1,000 or more. Rules vary with your situation, so check with an accountant.

Compare the growing-practice net with an employed peer role in your state before you decide to go private. The independent path often pays more only after the first year, and only if the client count holds.

What does it cost to run an independent recovery coaching practice?

Running costs for a solo recovery coach are modest: practice software, professional liability insurance, certification and continuing education, and marketing. The figures in the last column are example budgets for planning, not quotes.

CostWhat it coversWhat drives the priceExample yearly budget

Professional liability insuranceClaims of errors, negligence or malpractice in servicesScope of services, state, coverage limitsGet quotes; varies widely
Certification and continuing educationState peer certification, recovery coach training, renewalsYour state's board and training sponsorVaries by state; some programs are subsidized
MarketingDomain, printed materials, local events, optional adsHow much you rely on paid reach vs referrals$500 to $3,000 as an example range
Supervision or peer consultationA mentor or group to review hard casesPrivate supervisor vs free peer groupOptional; often free through a peer network

The SBA lists professional liability insurance as cover for "businesses that provide services to customers", protecting against loss from "malpractice, errors, and negligence" (SBA business insurance guide). For recovery work, ask the insurer directly whether peer recovery coaching falls inside the policy's definition of covered services.

Software is usually the cost where coaches overspend without noticing: a scheduler, a payment tool, an e-signature tool, a course host, a community app and an email tool can each be a separate monthly bill. One membership that covers the whole client journey keeps the cost line short. For a ranked view of options, see the best platform for recovery coaches.

What raises a recovery coach's income?

Income rises when the same hours serve more people or when each client stays longer. Six levers do most of the work.

  • Specialize. "Recovery coach" is broad. Alcohol-free professionals, people leaving residential treatment, parents of a child in recovery, and people in recovery returning to work are each a smaller audience with a clearer problem and a higher willingness to pay.
  • Sell packages, not hours. A 90-day early-recovery package with weekly calls and daily check-ins prices the support, not the clock. Clients also commit to the whole period, which suits recovery better than session-by-session booking.
  • Add group programs. Our 2026 Coaching Business Report lists group coaching programs at $500 to $3,000 per participant across coaching niches (community estimates). A recovery group of 8 to 12 at a lower price than one-to-one can match a day of individual sessions in a single evening.
  • Win organizational contracts. Employers, recovery residences, sober-living operators and some treatment programs buy aftercare or alumni coaching for a group. The same report lists corporate or B2B retainers at $3,000 to $10,000 a month across niches; recovery contracts are often smaller, and each depends on what the organization can fund.
  • Offer digital products. A short course on the first 30 days, a workbook for family members or a relapse-prevention planning guide sells while you sleep and gives prospects a low-cost first step.
  • Keep clients longer. A monthly retainer after the first package often adds months of income per client. Alumni memberships fit recovery well; the report lists memberships at $47 to $197 a month (community estimates).

Do certifications change how much a recovery coach earns?

For employed peer roles, yes: state peer certification is often the condition of the job and of the funding behind it. For private practice, certification changes trust and referrals more than it changes the fee directly.

SAMHSA's National Model Standards for Peer Support Certification recommend 40 to 60 hours of training and treat lived experience as an essential part of the peer role. When SAMHSA reviewed state programs, 22 of 55 peer certifications required supervised work experience, ranging from under 200 hours to 2,000; it recommends states that require it ask for no more than 120. The standards also recognize three types of peer certification (mental health, substance use and family peer) and recommend against tying certification to one recovery pathway, including abstinence-only rules.

Credentials you will see named in job postings and on coach websites include state certified peer recovery specialist titles (the name differs by state), CCAR's Recovery Coach Academy, which takes five days, and general coach training aligned with the International Coaching Federation. Each state runs its own board, exam and fees, with no automatic reciprocity, so check your board before paying for anything.

Where certification does move private income: it opens organizational contracts, makes referral partners like therapists and treatment centers comfortable sending clients, and protects you from using a title your state restricts. For the full comparison of programs, read is recovery coach certification worth it?

If you also pursue an ICF credential, Coachful counts your coaching hours and distinct clients against ACC, PCC and MCC thresholds and exports an ICF client coaching log with paid and pro bono hours (ICF hour tracking).

What is the scope line, and why does it matter for pay?

Recovery coaching is not treatment. A recovery coach offers peer support, planning, accountability and connection to resources; diagnosis, withdrawal management, medication decisions and therapy belong to licensed clinicians and medical providers.

Refer immediately when a client describes withdrawal symptoms, a recent overdose, thoughts of suicide or self-harm, a co-occurring mental health crisis, or a situation where someone is in danger. In the U.S., the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline takes calls and texts at 988. Write your crisis protocol into your coaching agreement so clients know what you will do.

The scope line matters for income in two ways. It keeps you insurable, and it is what makes clinicians willing to refer to you. A coach who stays in lane becomes the person a therapist calls when a client needs daily support between sessions; a coach who drifts into treatment loses those referrals. Evidence for peer recovery support is real but mixed: a systematic review of peer recovery support services and recovery coaching found tentative positive results, including reduced substance use and better treatment retention, alongside many null findings and weak study designs. Market your support honestly and never promise sobriety outcomes.

One more practical point. Coachful is not HIPAA-certified and offers no BAA. If you work under a clinical program or keep clinical records, those records belong in the program's clinical system; use coaching software for coaching.

What does a 12-month plan from first client to full practice look like?

A realistic first year moves from a handful of clients to a practice with packages, a group and referral partners. The months below are a planning template, not a guarantee; many coaches take longer, especially while employed.

  1. Month 1: set the base. Choose your niche, check your state's title rules, set up a sole proprietorship or LLC, get insurance quotes, and write a coaching agreement with your scope and crisis protocol. Read how to start a recovery coaching business for the full setup.
  2. Month 2: build one offer. One 90-day package with a clear inclusion list, a booking page for free discovery calls, and a simple website. Ask Coachful's team to build the site and funnel if you would rather spend the time on outreach.
  3. Month 3: first three clients. Tell your recovery network, former colleagues and two or three therapists what you offer. Price at your target; a discount for the first clients is fine if it is written down with an end date.
  4. Months 4 to 5: daily structure. Add morning and evening check-ins, habits and weekly goals to your package so clients feel support between calls. Track who goes quiet.
  5. Month 6: review the numbers. Compare revenue with the growing-practice row above. Raise the price for new clients if most discovery calls convert.
  6. Months 7 to 8: add a retainer. Offer a monthly continuation to clients finishing the 90 days. This is usually the cheapest income growth you will find.
  7. Month 9: launch a group. Run an 8-week cohort for one audience, such as family members or people leaving treatment, with a group chat and weekly video call.
  8. Month 10: referral partners. Meet treatment centers, recovery residences and therapists. Bring a one-page description of what you do and what you refer out.
  9. Month 11: a digital product. Turn the material you repeat most into a short course or workbook as a low-cost entry point.
  10. Month 12: decide. If the practice covers your living costs for three consecutive months, plan the step away from employment. If not, keep the peer role and grow on the side another year.

How does an independent recovery practice run in Coachful?

Coachful is a coaching platform: one subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant, with one login for the coach and one branded app for the client. It is built for coaches who deliver programs, not just sessions, and for solo coaches replacing four to six separate tools. Here is the practice from the earlier sections, inside it.

Offers and payments. Each package, retainer or group program is an offer with its own checkout, sold through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account: one-time payments, subscriptions for retainers, payment plans for longer packages, coupons and refunds, with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Coachful charges a 0% platform fee, so only your processor's fees apply, and an invoice is created for every transaction. More on coaching payment software.

Agreements before the first call. Coaching agreements with e-signature go out before the first session and are stored on the client record, which is where your scope statement and crisis protocol belong (coaching contracts).

The Agreements tab, where coaching agreements are sent for e-signature and stored on the client record.

Booking. Booking pages have availability rules, buffers, minimum notice and time-zone detection, with two-way Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook calendar sync. Sessions run on built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links. Email reminders go out, plus SMS 24 hours before and WhatsApp 1 hour before once messaging is enabled, which helps with no-shows in early recovery. Paid sessions and session credits handle top-up calls, and intake questions can be asked at booking.

Programs and daily support. Multi-week programs carry weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, morning and evening check-ins, goals with progress bars and streaks. For recovery clients, that turns "call me if you need me" into a daily structure: a morning intention, an evening check-in, a meeting-attendance habit. The client record shows each person as thriving, active, quiet or at risk, so you see who has gone silent before a weekly call.

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. On every plan, you can ask the Coachful team to build your website, funnel, sales page, program, course outline, email sequence, intake form or link in bio inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours. From Create, choose "We'll build it for you", describe what you want, and attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files. Nothing gets invented: no fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and gaps are left for you to fill. Recent builds include a five-page sage-and-cream site for a menopause coach with every button leading to a free 20-minute consultation, and a year-long cohort program with an application form and a nine-day bootcamp funnel for a money coach. Read more about the free white-glove service.

The Create page with the We'll build it for you card, where you request the free white-glove build.

What Coachful does not do. It is not HIPAA-certified and offers no BAA, so it is not for clinical records or insurance billing. It has no PayPal and no permanent free plan, and it does not sync with Garmin, Fitbit, Whoop or Oura. If your recovery work is part of a clinical program that bills insurance, the program's clinical system holds the record.

How to start. Start a free trial, then request the white-glove build for your site or first offer. Current plans: Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients. Monthly plans cancel in one click, and your clients, programs and content are imported for you during onboarding. What mistakes keep recovery coaches underpaid?

Most income problems in recovery coaching come from pricing the clock instead of the support, and from unbounded availability.

  • Selling single sessions. Clients in early recovery need continuity. Per-session pricing invites gaps exactly when support matters most, and it makes income unpredictable.
  • Unlimited texting at a session price. If the package says "text any time", define response times and what counts as urgent, or the real hourly rate quietly halves.
  • Comparing yourself to a counselor's salary. The BLS counselor figure describes a licensed, employed role. Private income depends on client count, not on that number.
  • Using a restricted title. Some states restrict peer specialist titles to certified people. Check before printing a title on your website.
  • Drifting into treatment. Advice on medication, withdrawal or diagnosis puts clients at risk, endangers insurance and loses clinical referrals.
  • Making outcome or income promises. The FTC's Endorsement Guides require testimonials showing exceptional results to reflect what people generally achieve, or to make the expected results clear. "Sober in 30 days, guaranteed" is neither honest nor safe.
  • Paying for six tools. Separate bills for scheduling, payments, e-signatures, courses, community and email add up before the first client pays.
  • Never raising prices. Review your rate every six months for new clients, especially once referrals start arriving on their own.

Recovery coach salary FAQ

How much does a peer recovery specialist make?

We could not verify a current national figure for the exact title in November 2026, and posted ranges vary widely by state and employer. The nearest official benchmark is the BLS median of $59,350 a year (May 2025) for substance abuse, behavioral disorder and mental health counselors, a licensed occupation that usually pays more than peer roles. Check postings in your state for real ranges.

Can you make a full-time living as a private recovery coach?

Yes, if the client count holds. In the illustrative math above, 12 clients at $100 a week for 46 weeks grosses $55,200 before costs and taxes. Getting there usually takes a year or more of building referrals, and many coaches keep a peer role while they grow.

Do I need certification to charge clients as a recovery coach?

In most places, a private, self-employed recovery coach does not legally need certification, but employed peer roles and publicly funded services usually require state certification. Some states restrict certain titles. See our guide to recovery coach certification.

What should a recovery coach charge per month?

Work it out from your income target and capacity: divide your gross target by the number of clients you can support and the months you work. A $70,000 target across 15 clients is roughly $390 per client per month over 12 months. Then adjust for what the package includes and what your audience can pay.

Is recovery coaching paid by insurance?

Peer support is funded through public programs in many states, but that usually depends on certification and working through a qualifying organization. Private recovery coaching is typically paid by the client or family. Coachful is not built for insurance billing.

How is a recovery coach different from a sober companion?

A recovery coach usually works through scheduled calls, check-ins and between-session support. A sober companion typically spends extended, in-person time with a client, sometimes around the clock, and is priced very differently. Decide which you offer and say so clearly in your agreement.

What taxes does a self-employed recovery coach pay in the U.S.?

Income tax plus self-employment tax of 15.3% on net earnings once they reach $400, according to the IRS, usually paid through quarterly estimated payments if you expect to owe $1,000 or more. Check with an accountant, since deductions and state taxes vary.

What is Coachful's free white-glove service?

On every plan, the Coachful team builds things for you inside your own account, such as a website, funnel, sales page, program, email sequence or intake form, usually within about 24 hours. You describe what you want and attach references; nothing is invented, and gaps are left for you. It does not include recording videos, logo design or ad management.

Can I run recovery groups in Coachful?

Yes. Group programs get an automatic cohort group, a community feed, group chat and video events, and each member can have their own habits and check-ins. That lets one coach support a group without losing sight of individuals.

Which software do recovery coaches use?

Independent coaches typically need booking, payments, agreements, daily check-ins and a client app. Coachful covers all of these in one membership; for a ranked comparison, see best software for recovery coaches.
