How to Become a Burnout Coach: Build a Paying Practice

How to Become a Burnout Coach: Build a Paying Practice

If you want to learn how to become a burnout coach and earn a living from it, the path is shorter than most people expect, and less about certificates than about business basics. Pick a specific burned-out buyer, write a clear scope line (coaching, not treatment), package a fixed-length program, set a price from your income target, set up your business entity, insurance and agreement, put booking, payments and delivery in one place, then win your first ten clients through people who already know you. Most new coaches can do the setup in four to six weeks. Filling a practice takes longer.

This guide covers the business side. You have already decided to coach; here you will build the thing that pays you. You will find a checklist, example packages, pricing math, the legal setup with official sources, the tools, scripts for your first clients, a 30/60/90-day plan and a startup cost table.

What are the steps to become a burnout coach, at a glance?

There are ten steps, and most of them cost time rather than money. The table shows typical effort and cost; figures are examples to plan with, not quotes.

Is burnout coaching a viable niche?

Yes, if you sell to a defined buyer with a defined problem. Burnout has a recognised, work-specific definition, which makes it easier to market than vague "stress" coaching, and both individuals and employers pay for help with it.

The World Health Organization lists burn-out in ICD-11 as an "occupational phenomenon", not a medical condition, and defines it as "a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed," with three dimensions: energy depletion or exhaustion, increased mental distance from or cynicism about one's job, and reduced professional efficacy (World Health Organization). That definition is useful to you in two ways. It tells you burnout is about work, so your buyers are working people and their employers. It also gives you language that clients recognise in themselves.

Who actually pays a burnout coach?

  • Mid-career professionals paying privately. Managers, lawyers, consultants, nurses, teachers and founders who are still functioning but running on empty. They pay out of pocket and want a structured plan, not open-ended talk.
  • Employers and HR teams. Companies buy coaching for high performers or managers at risk of leaving. The sale is slower, the contracts are larger, and you will need an invoice and agreement process that looks professional.
  • Leaders and executives. Often paid by the company, sometimes privately. If this is your market, see the approach on our executive coaches page.
  • Founders and self-employed people. No HR department, no manager to set limits, and usually a strong reason to pay for help fast.

Thinking of launching your coaching business?

Answer a few questions and Coachful builds it around you: your website, programs, booking and payments. Ready in minutes.

Build your platform

What is in scope, and when do you refer?

Burnout coaching helps people change workload, boundaries, routines, energy habits and career decisions. It is not treatment. Put a scope line in your agreement and on your website, for example: "Coaching is not therapy, medical care or a substitute for either. If you have symptoms of depression, anxiety, or any physical health concern, please see a qualified clinician."

Refer out, and pause coaching if needed, when a client mentions thoughts of self-harm or suicide (in the US, they can call or text 988), persistent low mood or loss of interest that lasts weeks, panic attacks, heavy drinking or drug use to cope, chest pain, fainting, or major changes in sleep or weight that they have not discussed with a doctor. Many burned-out clients are already seeing a therapist or GP; coaching can work alongside that with the client's agreement. If you want depth on the coaching method itself, our burnout recovery coaching framework lays out the phases, and coaching clients through career burnout covers sessions in practice.

Do you need a certification to be a burnout coach?

No law requires one for coaching in most places, but buyers, especially employers, trust credentials. A general coach training program accredited by a professional body such as the ICF gives you core coaching skills; a burnout specialism then comes from your experience, reading and supervised practice. We have written the credential side up separately, so read how to become a certified life coach for the ICF path and how to become a life coach without certification if you are starting from experience. Clinicians (nurses, therapists, doctors) moving into coaching should check their licensing board's rules on what they may call coaching versus practice.

How do you define your burnout client and offer?

Name one buyer and one outcome. "I help burned-out people feel better" sells poorly; "I help mid-career nurses who are thinking about quitting rebuild a workload they can sustain in 12 weeks" tells the right person they are in the right place.

Answer four questions in writing:

  1. Who: role, career stage and situation (still working, on leave, just quit).
  2. What they are burned out from: caseload, managing people, running a business, caregiving on top of work.
  3. What they want instead: a sustainable week, a decision about staying or leaving, a return-to-work plan.
  4. What you will not do: diagnose, treat, or advise on medication.

Three example burnout coaching packages

These are illustrative structures, not market rates. Set your own numbers with the pricing math in the next section.

  • The Reset (6 weeks, 1:1). Six weekly 50-minute calls, a short daily evening check-in, three habits (for example, a hard stop time, a lunch break away from the desk, a wind-down routine) and a written "sustainable week" plan at the end. For people still working who need relief fast.
  • The Rebuild (12 weeks, 1:1). Weekly calls for the first six weeks, then every other week, plus weekly goals, daily habits, morning and evening check-ins and a stay-or-leave decision framework. For people deciding whether to change role, career or working pattern.
  • The Recovery Circle (8 weeks, group). A weekly group call of 6 to 10 people, a private community, a short course with one lesson per week and a monthly 1:1. Lower price per person, higher total income per hour of your time.

Employers often want a version of the Rebuild for named staff, billed by invoice. Keep the structure the same and change the paperwork. For more on packaging, see how coaching packages are built.

How much should a burnout coach charge?

Work backwards from the income you need, the hours you can coach without burning out yourself, and the costs you carry. Then check the result against what your buyer can pay.

The table below is an illustrative example with made-up numbers to show the method. Replace every figure with your own.

Line (illustrative example)FigureHow it is worked out
Take-home target for the year$60,000Your number
Add tax set-aside (example 30%)$85,700$60,000 / 0.70; your accountant sets the real rate
Add business costs (software, insurance, training)$90,000Round up by about $4,300 for costs
Working weeks4452 minus holidays, sickness and admin weeks
Revenue needed per weekAbout $2,045$90,000 / 44
Client sessions you can deliver well per week15Leaves time for marketing and admin
Implied value per sessionAbout $136$2,045 / 15
12-week Rebuild with 9 calls plus check-insAbout $1,225 minimum9 x $136; price higher for between-session support

Three adjustments matter. First, price programs, not hours: between-session check-ins and habit tracking are part of what clients pay for. Second, offer a payment plan for longer programs so the price is reachable. Third, if you sell to employers, quote per participant and add a line for reporting. For the full cost picture on the training side, see how much it costs to become a life coach.

What legal setup does a burnout coaching business need?

In the US you need a business structure, a tax ID if you form an entity, any required local licenses, professional liability insurance, a written coaching agreement and a plan for client data. Rules vary by state and country, so check with an accountant or attorney before you file.

Entity and tax

A sole proprietorship is automatic if you do business without registering another structure. The SBA describes it as "a good choice for low-risk businesses and owners who want to test their business idea," but notes you can be held personally liable for business debts. An LLC protects owners from personal liability "in most instances"; LLC members are still considered self-employed and pay self-employment tax (SBA: choose a business structure).

If you form an LLC, get an EIN from the IRS online after the state filing. The IRS says, "You never have to pay a fee for an EIN" (IRS: get an EIN). Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare) once net self-employment earnings reach $400 (IRS: self-employment tax), and you generally must pay estimated tax if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file (IRS: estimated taxes). For 2026 the quarterly dates are April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15, 2027. Your city or county may also require a general business license; the SBA says requirements depend on your activity and location (SBA: licenses and permits).

Insurance

Professional liability insurance is the one most coaches need. The SBA describes it as cover for "Businesses that provide services to customers" that "protects against financial loss as a result of malpractice, errors, and negligence." It also notes that an LLC protects personal property from lawsuits, "However, that protection has limits" (SBA: get business insurance). Burnout coaching sits close to mental health, so tell your insurer exactly what you do and get the scope in writing.

Coaching agreement

Your agreement should cover: what coaching is and is not, your referral policy and what happens if a client is in crisis, confidentiality and its limits, session length and rescheduling, payment terms and refunds, and how long you keep notes. For employer-paid clients, also state what the sponsor will and will not see. Have a local attorney review your template once. Coachful's coaching contracts let clients sign before the first call, and the signed agreement stays on their record.

Agreements tab with a file drop area for a signed PDF
The Agreements tab, where coaching agreements live on the client record; this demo shows the empty state with a drop area for a signed PDF.

Marketing claims and email

Do not promise outcomes like "beat burnout in 30 days." The FTC says endorsements "must be honest and not misleading," and testimonials showing exceptional results need proof that they are typical, or the ad must make clear what people generally achieve (FTC Endorsement Guides). If you send a newsletter, CAN-SPAM requires a valid postal address and an opt-out you honour within 10 business days (FTC CAN-SPAM guide).

Client data

Burnout clients tell you sensitive things. Keep notes factual and minimal, use software with proper logins rather than shared documents, and be clear in your agreement about what you store. Coachful is not HIPAA-certified and does not sign a BAA, so it is for coaching records, not clinical ones. If you are also a licensed clinician delivering treatment, keep clinical records in a clinical system.

What tech stack does a burnout coach need?

You need booking, payments, agreements, a place to deliver the program between sessions, a client record, a website and email. You can buy five or six tools for that, or run it from one. We make Coachful, and this is the setup we recommend: one login for you, one branded app for your client, and the between-session support that burnout clients need.

What Coachful is, who it is for and what it does not do

Coachful is a coaching platform. One membership covers booking, payments, contracts, programs with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant. It is built for coaches who deliver programs rather than single sessions, solo coaches who may grow into a small team, and anyone replacing four to six separate tools. It does not offer HIPAA certification, PayPal, a permanent free plan, or wearable sync (no Garmin, Fitbit, Whoop or Oura), and your client app is your branding inside the Coachful app rather than your own App Store listing. To start, take a free trial and ask for the free white-glove build described below.

Burnout coaching suits this setup because the work happens between calls. A client who is exhausted will not open three apps. A morning check-in, an evening check-in and three habits in one branded app is the kind of small, steady structure that keeps them engaged without adding load. Your dashboard flags clients as thriving, active, quiet or at risk, and a "quiet" client in a burnout program is often your early warning.

The short walkthrough below shows how check-ins are set up.

Current plans: (Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients). Lower plans cap the number of clients, Pro is unlimited, and monthly plans cancel in one click. If you expect a full practice of around 15 active clients, the plan that covers that is Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients.

The free white-glove build

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, choose "We'll build it for you · FREE", describe what you need (a website, a funnel, a sales page, a program, a course outline, an email sequence, a form) and attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files such as your logo, photos and existing copy. The Coachful team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours. Nothing gets invented: no fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and gaps are left for you to fill. It does not include recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing.

For a burnout coach starting from scratch, a sensible first request is: a five-page site, a 12-week Rebuild program with morning and evening check-ins, and a free consultation booking funnel. One recent build of this kind went to a menopause and midlife health coach starting from nothing, who got a five-page site in sage and cream with every button leading to a free 20-minute consultation. A leadership coach with a website renewal days away got one clean homepage with a repeated "talk with me" button. Read more in our white-glove service guide.

How should you set up your website, booking and payments?

Keep it to one path: a website that explains who you help, one button to book a free consultation, and a checkout for each package once someone says yes. Everything else can wait.

Website

Five pages are enough: Home, About, Work With Me, Contact and a Privacy Policy. Your homepage needs your buyer in the headline, three signs they are burned out in their own words, what changes after working with you, your scope line, and the booking button repeated. Coachful's website builder has 30 designed homepage templates, a blog, a custom domain and SEO settings; calmer wellness designs suit this niche.

Booking

Create two session types: a free 20 to 30 minute consultation and a paid session for existing clients. Add intake questions to the consultation (role, what has changed in the last six months, whether they are on leave, whether they are working with a clinician). Set buffers between calls and a sensible minimum notice. For a burnout coach, modelling a sustainable calendar is part of the brand: do not offer 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. availability. Booking pages detect time zones and send email reminders, with SMS and WhatsApp reminders once messaging is enabled.

Payments

Connect your own Stripe (or Razorpay) account. Offer pay in full and a payment plan for the 12-week program, and a per-participant invoice for employers. Coachful takes no platform fee on client payments; you pay only the processor's fees. Apple Pay, Google Pay, coupons, refunds and Stripe Tax are supported. PayPal is not. Which one looks like you?

Coachful builds your coaching website from a few answers, in a design chosen for your niche, with programs, booking and payments ready behind it.

Build your platform

How do you get your first 10 burnout coaching clients?

Start with people who already trust you, then go where your buyer gathers at work. Paid ads can wait until you know which message converts.

Channels that suit burnout coaching

  • Your former profession. If you were a nurse, teacher, lawyer or manager, your old network is your first market. They know the pressure and they know you.
  • LinkedIn posts. Write short, specific posts about workload, boundaries and the Sunday-night dread your buyer feels. One post a weekday for a month will tell you which themes land.
  • Professional associations and unions. Offer a free 45-minute talk on recognising early burnout signs at work. End with a link to book a consultation.
  • HR and people teams. Ask for a 20-minute call to learn how they handle burnout among managers. Listen first; propose a small pilot later.
  • Referral partners. Therapists, GPs and occupational health staff see people who need practical structure as well as treatment. Make it easy to refer and clear that you refer back.
  • A free resource. A one-page "sustainable week" worksheet or a short self-check quiz, delivered by email, then a three-email sequence that ends with the consultation link.

Scripts you can adapt

Message to your network: "I've started a coaching practice for [nurses / managers / founders] who are running on empty and want a way of working they can keep up. I'm taking on five founding clients at a reduced rate in exchange for honest feedback. Do you know anyone who's said 'I can't keep doing this' lately?"

Message to an HR lead: "I coach managers who are close to burning out, with a 12-week program focused on workload, boundaries and a return to steady performance. I'm not pitching today. Could I ask you three questions about how burnout shows up on your team?"

Consultation close: "From what you've told me, the Rebuild fits: twelve weeks, a short check-in each morning and evening, and a plan for [their goal] at the end. Would you like to start next week, and would pay in full or the three-part plan suit you better?"

Founding clients can give you testimonials later, but only honest ones, with any discount disclosed if it would affect how readers see the review, as the FTC guidance above explains. Track every lead in one place so none go cold; Coachful's Intakes page shows upcoming consultations and conversion rate.

Intakes page with total intakes, upcoming calls, conversions and a table of intake calls

If you post on Instagram, Coachful's Instagram automations can reply to a comment containing a keyword (for example "RESET") with a DM that holds your booking link or worksheet, and the person lands in the same lead records.

How do you deliver burnout coaching and keep clients?

Give clients a light, steady structure between sessions and watch for disengagement. Burnout recovery is mostly about what happens on Tuesday afternoon, not what is said on the call.

A program structure that works for burned-out clients

  • Weekly goal: one, small. "Leave work by 6 p.m. three days this week" beats a list.
  • Daily habits: two or three at most. Start with recovery habits (sleep window, a real lunch break, a walk) before performance habits.
  • Morning check-in: energy level and one intention, under a minute.
  • Evening check-in: what drained them, what helped, and a note to you if needed.
  • Session notes and a short summary: so the client sees their own progress.

In Coachful, multi-week programs carry weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, check-ins, goals with progress bars and streaks, and clients see it all in your branded app. Our program software page shows how programs are built, and more than 40 ready-to-film program templates give you a starting structure to rewrite in your own words.

Habit tracker cards showing progress toward 30-day targets
The client's habits view in demo data, with each habit's progress toward a 30-day target.

Watch for "quiet"

A burned-out client who stops checking in may be overwhelmed, may be getting worse, or may be fine and busy. Each client record shows check-ins, habits and a thriving, active, quiet or at-risk status. Make a rule: if a client goes quiet for three days, send a short, low-pressure message. If they report symptoms on your referral list, follow your referral policy.

Community and groups

For the Recovery Circle, cohort groups are created automatically when people enrol, with a community feed, group chat and video events. Peers who are burned out in the same way normalise each other's experience, which is something 1:1 coaching cannot do. See group coaching software.

Client community feed with a live Q&A and coach posts
The client community feed in demo data, with a live Q&A at the top and coach posts below.

Michelle, AI support and credentials

Michelle, Coachful's built-in AI assistant, works from your practice data: it can draft program content and emails, summarise recorded sessions and brief you before each call. If you are working toward an ICF credential, Coachful counts coaching hours and distinct clients against ACC, PCC and MCC thresholds and exports an ICF client coaching log (ICF hour tracking).

Retention

Plan the end of each program from week one. In the second-to-last session, review the progress data with the client and offer one next step: a monthly maintenance call, the group, or nothing. A monthly subscription for maintenance coaching is easy to set up and gives you steadier income. For your own capacity, read preventing coach burnout; a burnout coach running a burned-out practice is a hard sell.

What does a 30/60/90-day launch plan look like?

Build in the first month, sell in the second, refine in the third. The plan assumes 10 to 15 hours a week alongside other work.

How much does it cost to start a burnout coaching business?

A lean start can cost little beyond software, insurance and your time; a comfortable one adds training, legal review and design help. Figures for non-Coachful items are example budgets to plan with, not quotes; your state, insurer and choices will change them.

What mistakes do new burnout coaches make?

  • Selling to "anyone who is stressed." The broader the audience, the weaker every message. Pick a profession or situation.
  • Blurring coaching and therapy. No scope line, no referral policy, and clinical language on the website. It is a risk to clients and to you.
  • Selling single sessions. Burnout does not change in one hour. Sell programs with support between calls.
  • Too much homework. Burned-out clients drop out of programs that feel like another job. Two habits and a one-minute check-in beat a daily journal prompt.
  • Underpricing. Prices set to feel safe lead to a full calendar and a coach who burns out. Use the pricing math.
  • Promising results. "Recover in 30 days" invites complaints and FTC trouble. Describe the process and what clients typically work on.
  • A tool for every job. Five logins and three apps for the client adds the friction you are trying to remove from their life.
  • Skipping the employer market. Companies pay for this. One pilot with a team of managers can equal several private clients.

Burnout coach FAQ

Can I become a burnout coach without a certification?

Yes. In most places coaching is not a licensed profession, so no certificate is legally required. Employers and many private clients do look for accredited training, so a recognised coach training program helps you sell. Your burnout specialism then comes from experience, study and supervision.

Is a burnout coach the same as a therapist?

No. Coaching works on present-day changes to workload, boundaries, habits and decisions. It does not diagnose or treat depression, anxiety or other conditions. A good burnout coach has a written referral policy and works alongside clinicians when a client needs both.

Who hires burnout coaches?

Mid-career professionals paying privately, founders and self-employed people, and employers buying coaching for managers or high performers. Each buyer needs slightly different marketing and paperwork, so pick one to start.

How long should a burnout coaching program be?

Many coaches use 6 to 12 weeks: long enough to change routines and test them under real work pressure, short enough to commit to. A shorter reset suits people still working; a longer rebuild suits people deciding whether to change roles.

How should I price burnout coaching?

Start from your income target, tax set-aside, costs and the number of sessions you can deliver well each week, then price whole programs rather than hours. Offer a payment plan for longer programs and a per-participant rate for employers.

Do I need an LLC to start?

Not necessarily. A sole proprietorship is automatic and the SBA calls it a good choice for testing a low-risk business idea, but it leaves you personally liable. Many coaches form an LLC once they have paying clients. Check with an accountant or attorney for your state.

What is Coachful's free white-glove service?

It is a build service included on every plan. You describe what you need, such as a website, funnel, program or email sequence, attach links and files, and the Coachful team builds it in your account, usually within about 24 hours. It does not include video recording, logo design or ad management.

Can I use Coachful for clinical records?

No. Coachful is not HIPAA-certified and does not sign a BAA, so it is for coaching records only. Licensed clinicians who also provide treatment should keep clinical notes in a clinical system.

How do I find my first burnout coaching clients?

Start with your own professional network, then give talks to associations and teams, post on LinkedIn about your buyer's specific pressures, and build referral relationships with therapists and occupational health staff. A free worksheet with a short email sequence turns readers into consultations.

Can I run group burnout coaching?

Yes, and it often works well because peers normalise each other's experience. Keep groups small, pair the weekly call with a private community, and add an occasional 1:1. Screen applicants so anyone who needs clinical support is referred first.
