How to Start a Coaching Business on Instagram: A 90-Day Plan

How to Start a Coaching Business on Instagram: A 90-Day Plan

Here is how to start a coaching business on Instagram in practice: choose one specific client and one problem you solve for them, turn that into two or three clear offers, price them from a revenue target, register the business and get the basic paperwork in place, then give your profile one job. Your bio, link and content should all lead to a single next step, usually a short consultation call. The coaches who get clients from Instagram in their first 90 days usually aren't the ones with the biggest following. They run the most conversations, and every interested person has a clear path from a post to a paid, signed, booked client.

This guide assumes you have already decided to coach. It covers building the business around Instagram: offers, pricing math, legal setup, the software stack, booking and payments, DM scripts for your first 10 clients, delivery that keeps people renewing, a 30/60/90-day plan, a startup budget and the mistakes worth avoiding. If you want the general version first, read How to Start a Coaching Business in 2026: A 10-Step Plan.

What are the steps, at a glance?

There are ten steps, and most coaches can finish them within six to eight weeks of part-time work. The table shows a realistic time for each and what it usually costs. Costs marked "varies" depend on your state, country or the quotes you get.

Is Instagram a viable home for a coaching business?

Yes, for niches where the buyer is an individual who scrolls, saves and messages: fitness, nutrition, wellness, mindset, confidence, relationships, dating, career change, money habits and small-business coaching all fit. It is weaker for coaching bought by companies, where a manager or HR team signs the contract and LinkedIn or referrals usually matter more.

Before you commit, check three things.

Who pays. The person who reads your posts must be the person who can pay. A new mother looking for postpartum fitness pays for herself. A junior employee who wants leadership coaching often needs an employer to pay, which makes Instagram a slow route.

Demand you can see. Instagram does not hand out reliable public numbers for your niche, so build your own evidence. Spend a week collecting the questions people ask in comments under the big accounts in your space, in your own DMs and in your friends' Stories. If you can list 20 distinct, specific questions (for example "how do I stop snacking at 10 p.m. when I'm stressed" rather than "how do I eat better"), there is a market of people who know they have the problem. Check the paid offers other coaches in your niche sell from their bios too: that shows people already pay for this kind of help.

Scope and credentials. Check whether your state or country regulates the advice you plan to give, and whether your business needs local licenses and permits, which the SBA says vary by activity and location (SBA, Apply for licenses and permits). Health, fitness and nutrition coaches also have a scope line to respect. Coaching is not treatment: you do not diagnose, prescribe or treat medical or mental health conditions. Put that in your agreement and your bio links, and refer people to a doctor, registered dietitian or licensed therapist when they describe symptoms, an eating disorder, a medical condition or a crisis. A credential such as an ICF or NBHWC certification can help buyers trust you. If you are still deciding on training, the niche guides cover it: health coaching, nutrition coaching, relationship coaching and career coaching.

Thinking of launching your coaching business?

Answer a few questions and Coachful builds it around you: your website, programs, booking and payments. Ready in minutes.

Build your platform

Who exactly is your client, and what do you sell them?

Your client is one person you can describe in a sentence, and your offer is the result you help them reach in a fixed time. On Instagram this matters more than anywhere else, because a scroller decides in a second whether a post is "for me".

Use this template: I help [specific person] go from [current situation] to [result] in [time frame], without [the thing they fear or hate]. Example: "I help women in their 40s who sit at a desk all day get strong and pain-free in 12 weeks, without spending an hour a day in a gym." That sentence becomes your bio, your consultation pitch and the headline on your sales page.

Then build two or three offers. More than three confuses people who arrive from a single post.

Example package 1: the core 1:1 program

A 12-week program with a kickoff call, weekly or fortnightly calls, a personal plan, daily check-ins in an app and message support during working hours. This is where most of your revenue comes from at first, and where you learn what your clients really need.

Example package 2: a small group cohort

A six- or eight-week cohort of 8 to 15 people with one live group call a week, a shared program, a private community and accountability check-ins. It costs less per person than 1:1, and many of your Instagram followers can afford it sooner. It also grows revenue without adding a call for every new client.

Example package 3: an entry offer

A paid single session, a short self-paced course or a two-week challenge. Its job is to let people who aren't ready for 12 weeks try you without much risk. Keep it cheap and closely linked to the core program, and invite every buyer to a call at the end.

For a wider view of formats (retainers, memberships, VIP days, hybrid), see 10 Coaching Business Models Compared. If you want to write the plan down, the one-page coaching business plan template takes about an hour.

The Offers page in demo data: four offers, three live, with cover photos for In My Corner and 90-Day Transformation.

How should you price your offers?

Price from the income you need and the hours you can coach, not from what other accounts charge. Pick a monthly revenue target, decide how many client hours a week you can deliver well, and check which mix of offers reaches the target inside that limit.

The table below is an illustrative example only, not market data. It uses a made-up target of $6,000 a month in revenue to show the method. Swap in your own numbers.

Offer mix (example)Example priceClients needed for $6,000/monthLive coaching time per week (example)
1:1 program only$600 per month per client10About 10 hours of calls (weekly 1-hour sessions)
Group membership only$150 per month per member40About 1.5 hours of calls, plus community time
Mix: 1:1 plus group6 at $600 and 16 at $15022 in totalAbout 7.5 hours of calls, plus community time
Mix plus entry offerAbove, plus 10 sessions at $9022 ongoing, 10 trial buyersAbout 10 hours

Two adjustments turn revenue into take-home pay. First, subtract card processing fees and your monthly software and insurance costs. Second, put money aside for tax. In the US, self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare) on net self-employment earnings once they reach $400 a year, on top of income tax (IRS, Self-employment tax). For 2026, the Social Security part applies to combined earnings up to $184,500 (IRS Form 1040-ES (2026)). Ask an accountant what share to set aside, since it depends on your other income and your state.

A simple check before you publish a price: if ten people said yes this month, could you deliver all ten well? If not, the price is too low, or the offer needs a group format.

What legal setup do you need before taking money?

You need a business structure, a tax ID if you form an entity, any local licenses, insurance, a written coaching agreement, honest marketing and a plan for client data. None of this is hard, but do it before the first payment, not after.

Business structure

The SBA describes a sole proprietorship as automatic if you trade without registering anything else. It is "a good choice for low-risk businesses and owners who want to test their business idea", but you can be held personally liable for business debts. An LLC protects owners from personal liability "in most instances"; profits can pass through without corporate tax, but members pay self-employment tax. An S corp is a tax election filed on IRS Form 2553, and an LLC can choose it (SBA, Choose a business structure). Many new coaches start as sole proprietors and move to an LLC once income is steady. Ask an accountant or attorney which suits your state.

EIN and taxes

If you form an LLC or corporation, register it with your state first, then get an employer identification number. The IRS issues EINs online "in minutes for free", and "You never have to pay a fee for an EIN" (IRS, Get an EIN). Sole proprietors report business income on Schedule C. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file, you generally have to make estimated tax payments (IRS, Estimated taxes). The 2026 due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, then January 15, 2027.

Insurance

The SBA says professional liability insurance is for "Businesses that provide services to customers" and "protects against financial loss as a result of malpractice, errors, and negligence". It also notes that the protection an LLC gives your personal property "has limits" (SBA, Get business insurance). Get quotes for professional liability insurance, and general liability too if you meet clients in person or run outdoor sessions.

Coaching agreement

Your agreement should cover what is included, session length and cancellation rules, payment terms and refunds, the scope line (coaching is not therapy, medical or financial advice), confidentiality and its limits, and how either side ends the relationship. Have it signed before the first call. See coaching contracts for how this works in practice.

Instagram marketing rules: testimonials, results and income claims

On Instagram, your marketing is mostly testimonials, before-and-after posts and client wins. That is exactly the area the FTC watches. Endorsements "must be honest and not misleading". If a testimonial shows exceptional results, you need proof those results are what people generally achieve, or the post must make clear what people can usually expect. Any connection a viewer wouldn't expect (a friend, a family member, a free program in exchange for the review) must be disclosed clearly (FTC, Endorsement Guides). Since October 21, 2024, the Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule has also banned fake reviews and testimonials, and it bans offering incentives only for positive ones (FTC, Reviews and Testimonials Rule).

If you coach people on making money (business, sales, social media growth), take extra care. In 2021 the FTC sent a Notice of Penalty Offenses about money-making claims to more than 1,100 businesses, including "investment and business coaching". The Notice says it is deceptive to present earnings as typical, or to show earnings figures without clear context such as the effort involved and how many participants actually earned them (FTC, Money-making opportunities). The FTC's consumer advice puts it simply: "If it promises guaranteed income, large returns, or a 'proven system,' it's likely a scam" (FTC consumer advice). Don't write captions that sound like that.

Email and client data

If your lead magnet adds people to an email list, CAN-SPAM applies to your commercial emails: honest subject lines, a valid physical postal address, a clear way to unsubscribe, and opt-outs honored within 10 business days (FTC, CAN-SPAM guide). Keep client details out of comments and public replies. Move real coaching conversations off Instagram DMs and into a private client space. If you coach clients in the EU or UK, data protection law (GDPR) also applies, so check the details with an attorney.

Which tech stack do you need, and why should Coachful be the home?

You need one place for your website and link-in-bio page, booking, payments, contracts, programs, client check-ins, community and email. A coach building on Instagram can run all of it from Coachful with one login, instead of stitching together four to six tools that don't share client data. We make Coachful, so weigh our view accordingly. The facts below are what the product does.

A laptop showing a funnels list and a tablet showing a website page structure on a studio table.
Coachful's Funnels list on a laptop beside its website builder page structure on a tablet.

What Coachful is. A coaching platform where one subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant. The coach has one login, and clients get one app with the coach's branding. Who it is for: coaches who deliver programs, not just sessions; solo coaches growing into a small team; and coaches replacing a stack of separate tools. What it does not do: it is not HIPAA-certified and offers no BAA, so it is not for clinical record-keeping or insurance billing. It has no PayPal and no permanent free plan. The client app runs under the Coachful listing with your branding, not under your own App Store account. It does not sync with Garmin, Fitbit, Whoop or Oura. How to start: begin a free trial at coachful.co/setup, then request the free white-glove build described below. Current plans: (Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients).

Here is what each part replaces for an Instagram-first coach:

  • Link-in-bio page that sells replaces a separate link-in-bio storefront. Your one Instagram link can show offers, a free resource and a booking button.
  • Website builder with a blog, custom domain, SEO settings and 30 designed homepage templates replaces a separate site builder (coach website builder).
  • Funnels for booking, applications, lead magnets and checkout, with Meta Pixel and UTM tracking, so you can see which posts and campaigns bring leads (coaching funnel software).
  • Booking with availability rules, buffers, time-zone detection, two-way Google, Apple and Outlook calendar sync, and built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links (scheduling software).
  • Payments through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account: one-time, subscriptions, payment plans, coupons and Apple Pay or Google Pay. Coachful takes a 0% platform fee; you pay only Stripe or Razorpay processing (coaching payment software).
  • Agreements with e-signature, sent before the first call and stored on the client record.
  • Programs, habits and check-ins delivered in the client's branded app, plus courses and a community (group coaching software).
  • Email lists, broadcasts and sequences with triggers, delays and branching, so new leads from Instagram get a follow-up without you copying addresses by hand.
  • Michelle, the built-in AI assistant, drafts emails and content from your live practice data, which helps when you need caption ideas that match what clients actually ask. Questions and planning are included in your Coachful membership; confirmed builds and changes use AI credits (AI coaching assistant).

For comparison, here is what the same jobs cost when you assemble them from single-purpose tools. Vendor prices are as listed in October 2026.

A common Instagram starter stack is a link-in-bio storefront, a scheduler and an email tool. That adds up to three logins, three invoices, and client details copied by hand between them, and you still have no place to deliver the coaching itself. If you are not technical, How to Start a Coaching Business When You're Not Tech-Savvy goes through the setup in plain steps, and Online Coaching Business Software: Every Piece You Need lists each component.

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. On every plan you can open Create > We'll build it for you and describe what you want: a website, a funnel, an offer or sales page, a program, a course outline, an email sequence, a link in bio, a lead quiz and more. You can attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files such as your logo, photos, brand guide or existing copy. The Coachful team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours. Nothing gets invented: no fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and any gaps are left for you to fill. It does not include recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing. One recent build: a menopause and midlife health coach starting from nothing got a five-page site in sage and cream, with every button leading to a free 20-minute consultation. That is the setup an Instagram coach wants. Read more in Coachful's free white-glove service.

How do you set up the website, booking and payments?

Build the path in this order: one link in your bio, a page that explains the offer, a booking step with intake questions, a signed agreement and a payment. Each step should take a follower less than a minute.

The link in your bio

Put one link in your bio and make it a page you control, not a list of ten buttons. The top of that page should repeat your client sentence and offer one primary action ("Book a free 20-minute call") and one secondary action (a free guide or checklist). Lower down, list your offers. In Coachful, the link-in-bio page can sell directly, and funnels add pixel and UTM tracking, so you can tag links in Stories or Reels captions and see which ones bring bookings.

The website

A small site is enough: Home, About, Work With Me, Results and Contact, plus a privacy policy. Coachful's builder starts from designed templates, and you can import an existing site. Pick a template that matches the feel of your Instagram grid so people don't feel they've landed somewhere else.

This walkthrough shows how a funnel is put together in Coachful, from the opt-in page to the follow-up:

Booking with intake questions

Your consultation booking page should ask three to five intake questions: what they want to change, what they've tried, what's stopping them, and how soon they want results. These answers save the first ten minutes of the call and filter out people who are only curious. Coachful's booking pages detect time zones (useful when Instagram brings followers from several countries), enforce minimum notice and buffers, and send email reminders, plus SMS and WhatsApp reminders once messaging is enabled.

Contracts and payments

When someone says yes on the call, send one link that takes them through the agreement and payment. Connect your own Stripe account (or Razorpay where that fits better), set up a monthly subscription or a payment plan for the 12-week program, and add a coupon for your first few founding clients if you want. Each transaction creates an invoice, and you can send manual invoices too.

Build your platform

How do you get your first 10 clients from Instagram?

Your first 10 clients will come from conversations, not from going viral. Plan for roughly a week of setup, then daily posting and messaging, with the goal of booking several consultations a week. Here is the sequence that works without paid ads.

1. Make the profile do the selling

  • Name field: your name plus the outcome ("Dana | Strength for desk workers"), so people see what you do before they read the bio.
  • Bio: your client sentence, one line of proof (a credential or years of experience), and a call to action pointing to the link.
  • Three pinned posts: one about who you help and how, one client result shared with permission and honest context, and one that explains your offer and how to book.
  • Highlights: Start here, Results, FAQ, Work with me.
  • Professional account: switch to a creator or business account so you can see insights and add contact buttons.

2. Post content that starts conversations

Choose three content pillars tied to the 20 questions you collected: one teaching pillar (how to fix a specific problem), one belief-shifting pillar (why the usual advice fails), and one proof pillar (your process, client wins shared with permission, behind the scenes). End most posts with a prompt to reply or send a keyword in DMs, such as "Send me PLAN and I'll send you the checklist." Stories are where followers get to know you: polls, question boxes and quick check-ins bring replies you can answer personally. Read Instagram Lead Generation for Coaches: Seven Tactics and Examples for more formats.

3. Open real conversations in DMs

Every reply to a Story, every keyword message and every thoughtful comment is a chance to start a conversation. Keep it human and short. Here are three scripts to adapt.

When someone replies to a Story: "Thanks for answering! Can I ask what made you pick that one? Is it something you're dealing with right now?"

When someone sends a keyword: "Here's the checklist: [link]. Quick question so I can point you to the right part: what have you already tried for this?"

When they describe a real problem: "That's really common with the people I work with, and it's usually fixable. I run free 20-minute calls where we map out what would help in your situation. No pressure either way. Want the link?"

Never send cold pitches to people who haven't engaged with you. It is the fastest way to get your messages ignored or reported.

4. Use the people who already know you

Your first clients often come from your existing network. Post a "founding clients" announcement on your feed and Stories, message friends and former colleagues to ask who they know (not to sell to them), and offer a limited number of founding places at a lower price in exchange for honest feedback. If you later share their results, disclose the discount, as the FTC guidance above requires.

5. Borrow audiences

Go Live with, or co-write a post with, someone who serves the same people without competing: a physiotherapist for a fitness coach, a recruiter for a career coach, a financial planner for a money coach. Offer value to their audience first.

6. Track every lead in one place

Once a DM turns into a guide download or a booking, the person should land in your CRM with their source noted. In Coachful, leads from forms and lead magnets show up on the Prospects page with their stage, and intake calls appear on the Intakes page with your conversion rate.

The Intakes page in demo data: 10 intake calls, 3 upcoming, 2 converted, a 40% conversion rate.

7. Run consultations that end in a decision

A 20-minute call can follow a simple structure: where are you now, where do you want to be, what's in the way, what has it cost you so far, and here's how I'd help. Then name the price plainly and ask whether they want to start. If the answer is "not now", offer the entry product or add them to your email list. If they need a clinician rather than a coach, refer them.

Repeated reminders and follow-ups are where Instagram coaches lose leads. Coachful's Automations screen lists app, reminder and Instagram automation choices to switch on as your volume grows.

How do you deliver results and keep clients renewing?

Clients renew when they keep making progress between calls, not just during them. Give each program a weekly structure, daily actions, a quick check-in and a community, so a client who found you on Instagram has a reason to open your app every day, not just scroll past you.

  • Programs: build multi-week programs with weekly goals and daily tasks. Coachful has more than 40 ready-to-film program templates to start from.
  • Habits and streaks: two or three habits per client, tracked daily, with streaks they can see.
  • Morning and evening check-ins: short questions about energy, mood or wins that show you who is slipping before they go quiet.
  • Client status: Coachful marks each client as thriving, active, quiet or at risk, and Michelle briefs you before each session.
  • Community: a feed, group chat and video events. Cohort groups are created automatically when people enroll in a program, which suits the group package.

Ask for the renewal around week 9 of a 12-week program, not after the last call. Show the client their check-in history and habit streaks, ask what they want next, and offer a continuation (monthly 1:1, or a place in the group). To track whether this is working, 6 Coaching Business KPIs to Review Each Month lists the numbers to watch.

What does a 30/60/90-day launch plan look like?

The first 30 days are for setup and your first conversations, days 31 to 60 for consultations and founding clients, and days 61 to 90 for systems and your first group offer. Expect to adjust the plan as you go.

PeriodBusinessInstagramTarget by the end
Days 1 to 30Client sentence, offers, pricing, structure, EIN if needed, insurance quotes, agreement, website and booking liveProfile fixed, three pinned posts, Highlights, 3 to 4 posts and daily Stories a week, collect questionsBooking link live; 20 conversations started; first 3 consultations booked
Days 31 to 60Run consultations, onboard founding clients, deliver the program in an app, collect feedbackKeyword posts with a free guide, one collaboration or Live, honest client stories with permissionFirst 3 to 5 paying clients; email list started

How much does it cost to start a coaching business on Instagram?

A lean start can cost little beyond one software subscription, insurance and any state filing fees. A more comfortable start adds an LLC, better filming gear and some paid promotion. The table shows the categories. Where a figure depends on your location or on quotes, it says so rather than guessing.

What mistakes do new Instagram coaches make?

Most of them come down to treating followers as the goal instead of conversations and clients. Watch for these:

  1. Waiting for a big following. A few hundred engaged followers who see you as the answer to one problem can fill a practice. Start inviting people to calls from your first week.
  2. A vague niche. "I help people live their best life" doesn't stop anyone scrolling. Name the person and the result.
  3. Ten links in the bio. Give the profile one job and one main button.
  4. Coaching inside DMs. Free advice in long message threads uses your time and gives you no paid relationship. Answer one question, then invite them to a call.
  5. Income and results claims without context. Screenshots of a client's big month or a dramatic before-and-after need honest context about what people usually achieve, under the FTC guidance cited above.
  6. No agreement and no scope line. Especially in health, fitness and mindset niches, put in writing what coaching is and is not, and when you refer.
  7. Five tools that don't talk to each other. Leads get lost between the link-in-bio tool, the scheduler and the spreadsheet. Keep the whole client journey in one system.
  8. Forgetting the tax set-aside. Self-employment tax and quarterly estimated payments surprise many first-year coaches.
  9. Selling sessions instead of outcomes. "Four calls a month" is a cost. "Strong and pain-free in 12 weeks" is a result people pay for.
  10. Only Instagram. Your account could be restricted or reach could drop. Build an email list from day one so you can always contact your audience.

Frequently asked questions

How many followers do I need to start a coaching business on Instagram?

There is no minimum. Paid clients come from conversations, so a small account in a clear niche that talks with its followers every day can book consultations in its first month. Focus on replies, DMs and booked calls rather than follower count.

Should I use a personal or a professional Instagram account?

Switch to a professional (creator or business) account so you can see insights and add contact options. You can keep showing your personality. People hire coaches they feel they know, so a mix of teaching and real life usually works better than a purely corporate feed.

Do I need a website if I sell through Instagram?

You need at least one page you control behind your bio link: one that explains the offer, takes bookings and collects payment. A small website adds trust, ranks in search and keeps you reachable if anything happens to your account. In Coachful the link-in-bio page, site and funnels live in the same account.

Do I need an LLC before taking my first client?

No. The SBA notes that a sole proprietorship is automatic and suits owners testing a business idea, but it leaves you personally liable for business debts. Many coaches form an LLC once income is steady. Check with an accountant or attorney for your state.

Can I take payments through Instagram DMs?

You can send a payment link in a DM, but the payment itself should run through a proper checkout tied to a signed agreement and an invoice. Coachful uses your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account for one-time payments, subscriptions and payment plans. It does not support PayPal.

Can I post client results and testimonials?

Yes, with the client's permission and honest context. FTC guidance says testimonials must reflect real opinions, connections like a discount or free program must be disclosed, and exceptional results need context about what people generally achieve. Fake or incentivized positive-only reviews are banned under the Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule.

Is Coachful suitable for health or nutrition coaches on Instagram?

Yes for coaching: programs, habits, check-ins, and with the Fitness & Nutrition pack, workouts, nutrition targets, meal plans and progress photos. It is not HIPAA-certified and offers no BAA, so it is not for clinical record-keeping or insurance billing. See Coachful for health coaches and for fitness coaches.

What is Coachful's free white-glove service?

On every plan, you describe what you want built, such as a website, a funnel, a link-in-bio page, a program or an email sequence, and attach up to 8 links and 10 files. The Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours, without inventing credentials, testimonials or prices. It doesn't include video recording, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing.

How much should I charge as a new coach?

Work back from a monthly revenue target and the hours you can coach well, as in the illustrative pricing table above. Subtract processing fees and costs, set money aside for tax, and check that you could deliver well if ten people said yes this month.

How long does it take to get the first paying client from Instagram?

It depends on your niche, how clear your offer is and how many conversations you start. That's why the 90-day plan above sets its first target at 20 conversations and three consultations, not a sales figure. Coaches who invite people to calls from the first week usually get there sooner than those who wait to feel ready.

Ready to build the business behind your Instagram?

Instagram brings people to you, but the business is what happens after they click your link: a page that explains your offer, a booking step, a signed agreement, a payment and a program that keeps them making progress. Set that up once, in one place, and spend your daily time on content and conversations. If you are new, Coachful for new coaches explains how to begin, and the white-glove team can build your first site and funnel for you.
