How to Start a Career Coaching Business in 2026

Here is how to start a career coaching business: pick one type of job seeker you understand better than most people, turn what you do for them into two or three fixed packages, price those packages from your income goal and capacity, set up a simple legal and tax structure, put booking, payments, agreements and delivery in one place, and then go and get your first ten clients through people who already know your work. With a few protected evenings a week, all of this fits into 60 to 90 days, even while you are still employed.
This guide assumes you have already decided to coach. If you are still weighing whether to become a career coach at all, start with what career coaching is and what it costs. Everything below is about building the business around the coaching: the offer, the numbers, the paperwork, the tools and the first clients. We make Coachful, a coaching platform, so we show how it fits, and we are clear about what it does not do.
What are the steps to start a career coaching business?
There are ten steps, and only two of them (the client and the offer) need real thinking. The rest is setup you can finish in a few evenings each. The times and costs below are typical ranges for a solo coach in the US; your state, insurance quote and tools will change them.
| Step | What you produce | Time | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Choose your client | One sentence describing who you help and the moment they hire you | 1 week | $0 |
| 2. Design the offer | Two or three packages with outcomes, sessions and length | 1 week | $0 |
| 3. Set prices | A price per package backed by income and capacity math | 1 to 2 days | $0 |
| 4. Pick a structure | Sole proprietorship or LLC, plus a free EIN if you need one | 1 to 2 weeks | $0 to your state's filing fee |
| 5. Insurance and agreement | Professional liability quote, a coaching agreement template | 1 week | Quote-dependent |
| 6. Business bank account | A separate account for coaching income and costs | 1 day | Often $0 |
| 7. Tech stack | Booking, payments, contracts, delivery and website in place | 1 to 2 weeks | One platform subscription plus card processing |
| 8. Website and intake | A short site, an intake form and a booking link | 1 week | Included with most platforms |
| 9. First 10 clients | Direct outreach, referral asks and a weekly content habit | 4 to 8 weeks | $0 if you skip ads |
| 10. Delivery and retention | A program with weekly goals, check-ins and an alumni option | Ongoing | Your time |
For a general version of this plan that is not career-specific, see how to start a coaching business in 2026.
Is career coaching a viable business?
Yes, with one caveat: career coaching is usually bought at a moment of urgency (a layoff, a stalled promotion, a job offer to negotiate), which supports a strong per-session price but rarely a long engagement. The business works when you plan for short engagements and a steady flow of new clients, and fails when you price and market it like open-ended life coaching.
Who actually pays for career coaching?
Three groups pay, and they buy differently:
- Individuals paying out of pocket. Laid-off professionals, people stuck mid-career, career changers, new graduates (often with a parent paying) and people preparing for a big interview or salary negotiation. They decide fast and want a clear end point.
- Employers. Some companies pay for coaching for staff they are promoting, or for people they are letting go as part of a severance package. These deals are slower, involve HR or procurement, and usually need an invoice rather than a checkout page.
- Institutions. University alumni offices, professional associations and bootcamps sometimes contract coaches for workshops or a fixed number of sessions.
Starting with individuals is usually simpler because the sale is quicker; employer work is easier to win once you have results to point to.
How do you check demand in your niche?
Rather than relying on a market-size headline, check demand directly for your chosen client. Count how many people in your network changed jobs or were laid off in the last year. Search LinkedIn for posts in your target industry asking for resume, interview or career-change help. Ask five people who fit your client profile whether they have ever paid for career help, what they paid and what they wish they had got. If you can find twenty such people in a week, the niche is viable.
Rate data also shows people pay. PayScale's 2025 coaching data and community reports put career coaching at roughly $100 to $250 an hour, and a 2026 sample of 35 coach rates published on Career Contessa ranged from $99 to $280 per session. Treat these as a market check, not a target.
Scope and credentials
Career coaching covers clarity, positioning, job search strategy, interviews, negotiation and the first months in a new role. It is not therapy, legal advice or job placement. Decide now where your edges are and write them into your agreement:
- Mental health. A layoff can bring real distress. Coaching is not treatment; if a client shows signs of depression, anxiety that stops them functioning, or talks about self-harm, pause the coaching conversation and refer them to a licensed professional or local crisis line.
- Legal questions. Severance terms, non-competes and discrimination claims belong with an employment attorney. You can help a client prepare questions; do not interpret the contract.
- Placement. If you promise to place clients in jobs or take fees from employers for hires, some states may treat you as an employment agency with its own rules. Check with an attorney before you sell anything that looks like placement.
Credentials such as the ICF's ACC or PCC are voluntary, but some corporate buyers ask for them. If you are working toward one, start logging hours from your first client. Coachful's ICF credential tracking counts coaching hours and distinct clients against ACC, PCC and MCC thresholds and exports an ICF client coaching log with paid and pro bono hours (how ICF hour tracking works).
Who is your client, and what will you sell them?
Your client is one specific job seeker at one specific moment, and your offer is the shortest path from that moment to a result they can name. "I help people with their careers" is not a client; "I help mid-level marketing managers who were laid off get a comparable or better role within a quarter" is.
A useful formula: [role or seniority] + [industry or background] + [trigger moment] + [result]. Some workable examples:
- Teachers moving into instructional design or corporate training.
- Engineers moving into their first people-manager role.
- Senior professionals over 50 returning to the job market after a layoff.
- New graduates in a specific field who need their first offer.
- Lawyers leaving practice for in-house or non-legal roles (see the legal career coaching framework).
Pick the one where your own background gives you credibility. A former recruiter, HR partner or hiring manager in an industry has an advantage selling to job seekers in that industry, because they know how the decision gets made on the other side of the table.
Three example career coaching packages
Build packages around outcomes and a clear end date. Here are three that suit most career niches. The session counts and lengths follow a common shape for career coaching; the content is yours to adjust.
- Single strategy session (one 50-minute call). For a specific problem: an interview next week, an offer to negotiate, a resume that is not getting callbacks. Includes prep from an intake form and a written summary. This is your easiest first sale.
- Job search sprint (four sessions over four to six weeks). Positioning, resume and LinkedIn review, a target company list, an outreach plan and interview practice. The client gets weekly tasks between sessions.
- Career transition program (eight sessions over three months). For career changers: values and strengths work, options research, informational interviews, a transition story, interviews and negotiation. This is where a structured program with check-ins pays off. Our guide to creating a career coaching program walks through the weekly structure, and the career transition framework gives you the stages.
You can add a fourth package later: a "first 90 days" add-on for clients who land the job and want support settling into it. That is your main retention lever, covered further down.

How should you price career coaching packages?
Price from your income goal and your realistic capacity, then check the result against market rates. Do not copy a competitor's price, because their costs, client load and reputation are different from yours.
Work it out in four steps:
- Set a gross annual revenue goal that covers your target income, taxes and business costs. Self-employed people in the US pay self-employment tax on top of income tax, so leave room.
- Estimate how many paid coaching hours you can actually deliver per week. Expect it to be well below 40, because marketing, admin and prep take real time.
- Decide how many clients of each package you can serve at once.
- Price each package so the mix you can realistically sell reaches the goal.
The table below is an illustrative example, not a recommendation. The prices sit inside the published rate ranges mentioned above (PayScale 2025 and the Career Contessa 2026 sample).
| Example package | Example price | Sessions | Effective hourly (incl. prep) | Example sales per year | Example revenue |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single strategy session | $200 | 1 x 50 min | About $133 (1.5 h with prep) | 40 | $8,000 |
| Job search sprint | $800 | 4 x 50 min | About $133 (6 h total) | 25 | $20,000 |
| Career transition program | $2,000 | 8 x 50 min | About $143 (14 h total) | 15 | $30,000 |
| Example total | 80 clients | $58,000 |
Two things stand out in this example. First, 80 clients a year is a lot of selling for a new coach, which is why the client acquisition section matters more than the price. Second, the effective hourly rate barely changes across packages, so the longer program is not about earning more per hour; it is about fewer sales conversations per dollar. If you want more on structuring packages, see coaching packages.
Once you have a number, test it. Quote it to the first five prospects. If all five say yes immediately, it is probably low. If none do, check the offer and the fit before you cut the price.
What legal setup does a career coaching business need?
You need a business structure, a way to handle tax, insurance that fits a service business, a written coaching agreement, honest marketing claims and a plan for client data. None of this is complicated, but rules vary by state and country, so check the specifics with an accountant or attorney.
Business structure
The SBA describes a sole proprietorship as automatic if you do business without registering another structure, with no separate entity, so you can be held personally liable for business debts. It calls it "a good choice for low-risk businesses and owners who want to test their business idea." An LLC protects owners from personal liability "in most instances," and profits can pass through without corporate tax, though LLC members pay self-employment tax. An S corp is a tax election filed with the IRS on Form 2553, and an LLC can be taxed as one (SBA: choose a business structure).
Many career coaches start as sole proprietors and form an LLC once they have steady income or start signing employer contracts. The SBA also notes that most businesses need some combination of federal, state and local licenses or permits, which depend on your activity and location, so check your Secretary of State and city websites (SBA: licenses and permits).
EIN and taxes
- EIN. The IRS issues an EIN online "in minutes for free," and "You never have to pay a fee for an EIN." If you form an LLC, do that with the state first (IRS: get an EIN).
- Self-employment tax. The rate is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare), and you must file Schedule SE if net self-employment earnings are $400 or more (IRS: self-employment tax). For 2026, the Social Security portion applies up to $184,500 of combined earnings (Form 1040-ES 2026).
- Estimated taxes. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file, you generally need to pay quarterly (IRS: estimated taxes). The 2026 due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027.
- Schedule C. Sole proprietors report coaching income and costs on Schedule C (IRS: about Schedule C). For what counts as a deductible cost, see is coaching tax deductible.
A simple habit: move a fixed share of every payment into a separate tax savings account the day it lands. Your accountant can tell you the right share for your situation.
Insurance
The SBA lists professional liability insurance for "Businesses that provide services to customers," protecting "against financial loss as a result of malpractice, errors, and negligence." It also notes that an LLC or corporation can protect personal property from lawsuits, "However, that protection has limits" (SBA: business insurance). Career advice can go wrong (a client follows your negotiation script and loses an offer), so get a professional liability quote before you take paid clients.
Coaching agreement
Your agreement should cover what is included, session length and number, the package end date, rescheduling and cancellation, refunds, confidentiality and its limits, and the scope lines above: no guaranteed job, no legal or mental health advice. Coachful sends coaching agreements with e-signature before the first call and stores them on the client record (coaching contracts).

Marketing claims and testimonials
Career coaches are tempted to advertise outcomes such as "land a job in 30 days" or "add $20k to your salary." Be careful. The FTC's Endorsement Guides say testimonials showing exceptional results need proof that they are what people generally achieve, or the ad must make clear the generally expected results; paid or related endorsers must be disclosed (FTC: Endorsement Guides). Since October 21, 2024, the Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule prohibits fake testimonials and lets courts impose civil penalties for knowing violations (FTC: reviews and testimonials rule). The FTC's own consumer advice says "If it promises guaranteed income, large returns, or a 'proven system,' it's likely a scam" (FTC consumer advice). Describe what you do and what clients typically experience, never guarantee a job or salary.
Email and data
If you send a newsletter or nurture emails, CAN-SPAM requires accurate headers, honest subject lines, a valid postal address and a working opt-out honored within 10 business days (FTC: CAN-SPAM guide). Client files for career coaching include resumes, salary history and sometimes details about a dismissal, so keep them in one secure place rather than scattered across email and shared drives, and publish a privacy policy on your site.
What tech stack does a career coaching business need?
A career coaching business needs six things: booking, payments, agreements, a place to deliver the work between sessions, a website with an intake path, and email. You can buy each one separately or run them all from one platform.
The separate-tool route is common. A typical setup might be Calendly for booking, HoneyBook for contracts and invoices, Kit for email, and Kajabi or Skool for courses and community. The trouble is that a career client's story ends up in four places: their intake answers in one tool, their resume drafts in email, their sessions in a calendar and their payments somewhere else. Here is what that costs, using prices as listed in October 2026:
| Tool | What it covers | Entry price (as listed in October 2026) | What it does not cover |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coachful | Booking, payments, agreements, programs with habits and check-ins, courses, community, website, funnels, email, AI assistant | Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients | No PayPal, not HIPAA-certified, no Salesforce or HubSpot integration |
| Calendly | Booking pages and reminders | Free plan (one event type); Standard $10/mo per seat billed annually | Client records, programs, contracts, invoicing |
| HoneyBook | Contracts, invoices, client portal | Starter $29/mo billed annually; scheduler starts on Essentials ($59/mo) | Programs, courses, habits, check-ins, community |
| Kit | Email newsletters and sequences | Free up to 10,000 subscribers; Creator from $39/mo for automations | Scheduling, client records, courses |
| Kajabi | Courses, community, website, funnels, email | Basic $179/mo ($143/mo billed annually) | Habit tracking, daily check-ins, per-client plans |
| Skool | Community and classroom | Hobby $9/mo plus 10% + 30¢ per transaction | Custom-domain website, funnels, 1:1 client records |
At those listed prices (annual billing where shown), Calendly Standard, HoneyBook Starter, Kit Creator and Kajabi Basic together come to about $221 a month before card processing, and you still have no daily check-ins or habit tracking for clients. What is Coachful, and who is it for?

Coachful is a coaching platform. One subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant, with one login for the coach and one branded app for the client. It is built for coaches who deliver programs rather than just sessions, solo coaches growing into a small team, and coaches replacing four to six tools. The company is based in Tallinn, Estonia, and has a Trustpilot rating of 4.5 from 21 reviews.
For a career coach, the parts that matter most are:
- Booking with availability rules, buffers, minimum notice, time-zone detection, intake questions on the booking form, and two-way Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook calendar sync. Video is built in, or Zoom, Meet and Teams links are created automatically.
- Payments through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account: one-time, subscriptions, payment plans, coupons and refunds, with a 0% Coachful platform fee since August 2026, so you pay only Stripe or Razorpay processing. You also get an invoice per transaction plus manual invoices, which matters for employer-paid work.
- Agreements with e-signature, sent before the first call.
- Programs with weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, morning and evening check-ins, goals with progress bars and streaks. This is where a job search sprint becomes a weekly rhythm instead of four disconnected calls.
- Client records holding goals, check-ins, habits, notes, intake answers, tags, payments and sessions, with a status of thriving, active, quiet or at risk, and an AI briefing per client before each session.
- Website, funnels and email: a section-based site with a blog and custom domain, booking and lead-magnet funnels, and email sequences with triggers and delays.
- Michelle, the built-in AI assistant, which works from your live practice data to draft programs, emails and content, summarize recorded sessions and brief you before calls. Questions and planning are included in your Coachful membership; confirmed builds and changes use AI credits. For more on AI in this niche, see AI tools for career coaches.
What Coachful does not do. It is not HIPAA-certified and is not for clinical record-keeping or insurance billing. It does not take PayPal and has no permanent free plan. The client app ships under the Coachful listing with your branding, not under your own App Store account. There is no multi-stage sales deal board for large teams and no Salesforce or HubSpot integration, which matters if you plan to sell to enterprise HR teams with their own CRM. The affiliate feature tracks links, clicks, conversions and revenue, but payouts are recorded manually.
How to start. Start a free trial, then ask the team to build your setup for you at no charge. Current plans: (Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients). Lower plans cap the number of clients, Pro is unlimited, and monthly plans cancel in one click. More detail on the career coaching setup is on the Coachful for career coaches page.
This onboarding walkthrough covers getting started in the platform:
The free white-glove build
Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. On every plan, you can ask the Coachful team to build parts of your business inside your own account. From Create > We'll build it for you · FREE, or the "Want us to build it for you?" card on the Website, Funnels and Programs pages, you describe what you want: a website, a funnel, a sales page, a program, a course outline, an intake form, an email sequence, a link-in-bio page and more. You can attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files such as your logo, photos, brand guide or existing copy. The team builds it in your account, usually within about 24 hours.

Nothing gets invented: the team will not add fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and leaves gaps for you to fill. It does not cover recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing. A recent example: a leadership coach with a Squarespace renewal days away asked for one clean homepage with a repeated "talk with me" button and got exactly that. For a new career coach, a sensible first request is a short site with a free consultation button, plus a job search sprint program built from your outline. Read more about the free white-glove service.
How do you set up your website, booking and payments?
Keep the website short and point every page at one action: booking a free consultation. A career coaching site needs a homepage, an About page that explains your hiring-side experience, a Work With Me page listing your packages, a contact or booking page and a privacy policy. That is enough to launch.

What goes on each page:
- Homepage. Name your client and their moment in the headline ("For engineers stepping into their first manager role"), then three short blocks: the problem, how you work, the next step. Repeat the booking button.
- About. Your career history as it relates to the client. Recruiters and hiring managers should say so plainly; it is your strongest credential.
- Work With Me. Each package with its outcome, sessions, length and price. Hiding prices tends to fill your calendar with people who cannot afford you.
- Booking. A free 20 to 30 minute consultation with three or four intake questions. The career coaching intake questions guide has prompts you can borrow.
Coachful's website builder includes 30 designed homepage templates, a blog, a custom domain and SEO settings, plus an Import website option if you already have a site (coach website builder).

For booking, set availability rules that protect your energy: a buffer after each session for notes, a minimum notice period so nobody books you an hour ahead, and a cap on consultations per day. Turn on reminders. Coachful sends email reminders, plus SMS 24 hours before and WhatsApp one hour before once messaging is enabled (scheduling software).

For payments, connect your own Stripe account and decide on payment plans before your first sales call. A career transition program is easier to buy as three monthly payments than one lump sum, especially for someone between jobs. Employers will usually want an invoice, so make sure you can issue one manually (coaching payment software).

How do you get your first 10 career coaching clients?
Your first ten clients will almost certainly come from people who already know you, not from search traffic or ads. Plan for direct conversations and referrals, and treat content as a slower channel that pays off from month three onward.
Channels that work for career coaches
- Your former colleagues. People you worked with know your judgment. Many of them will change jobs this year, and they know others who are changing.
- Recruiters and HR contacts. They meet candidates who need help they cannot give. A recruiter who sends you two referrals a quarter is worth more than a month of posting.
- Alumni networks. University and bootcamp alumni groups, and former-employee groups for large companies, are full of people mid-transition.
- Professional associations in your target industry. Offer a free talk on interviewing or negotiation for members.
- LinkedIn. Post twice a week about the specific problems your client faces. Write for one person, not the algorithm.
- A small group pilot. A four-week job search group at a reduced rate gets several clients through your process at once and produces honest feedback. See how to launch a group career coaching pilot.
Three scripts you can adapt
Warm outreach to a former colleague:
Hi Sam, I have started a career coaching practice focused on [client, for example engineers moving into management]. I am taking on a handful of clients this month. Do you know anyone who is going through that right now? Happy to give them a free 30-minute call, no pitch if it is not a fit.
Referral ask to a recruiter or HR contact:
Hi Jordan, you probably meet strong candidates who are not quite ready: weak resume, nervous interviewer, no story for a career change. That is exactly who I work with. If one comes to mind, I would be glad to help them, and I will let you know when they are ready to interview.
LinkedIn post that invites a conversation:
Three things I saw this month from [client type] who were not getting interviews: [specific pattern 1], [pattern 2], [pattern 3]. If you are seeing the same thing, I have two consultation spots open next week. Comment or message me "review" and I will send the link.
Track every conversation. Coachful's Intakes page shows intake calls, upcoming calls, conversions and your conversion rate, and the Prospects page holds leads with their source and stage, so you know which channel is working (coaching CRM).

This walkthrough covers the Intakes area:
Running the consultation
Use the free call to understand the situation, not to coach. Ask what is happening, what they have tried, what the deadline is and what a good result would look like. Then recommend one package, say the price and the start date, and stop talking. Send the agreement and payment link the same day. A career coaching intake questionnaire sent before the call saves you ten minutes of basic questions.

As soon as the first few consultations come in, set up a simple lead magnet (a resume checklist, an interview question bank, a salary negotiation worksheet) on a funnel page that feeds your email list. Coachful includes booking, application, lead-magnet and checkout funnels with pixel and UTM tracking (coaching funnel software).
How do you deliver results and keep clients after they land the job?
Deliver career coaching as a weekly program with tasks between sessions, not as a string of calls. Clients make progress on a job search in the days between sessions, sending outreach, rewriting their story, practicing answers, so that is where your structure needs to be.
A simple structure for the job search sprint:
- Week 1, clarity and target. Goal: a written target role and list of 20 companies. Daily task: research two companies.
- Week 2, story and materials. Goal: a resume and LinkedIn profile that match the target. Daily task: one paragraph of the transition story.
- Week 3, outreach. Goal: ten conversations requested. Habit: five outreach messages a day.
- Week 4, interviews. Goal: two practice interviews done. Habit: rehearse one answer aloud every morning.
Morning and evening check-ins give you a running picture of energy and progress, which matters in a job search where rejection piles up. If a client goes quiet, reach out before the next session rather than after. Ideas for session exercises are in 12 career coaching activities and 24 career coaching questions.

In Coachful, programs carry weekly goals, daily tasks, habits and check-ins into the client's branded app, and a cohort group is created automatically when clients enroll in a group program, so a job search cohort gets its own community space (coaching program software, group coaching software).
Retention in a short-engagement niche
Because career clients leave when they get the job, retention means designing what comes next:
- First 90 days add-on. Two or three sessions after the start date to help the client build relationships, set early goals and avoid common new-role mistakes.
- Alumni community. A low-cost or included community where past clients share openings and help each other. It also becomes a referral source.
- Annual review session. A yearly check on career direction and compensation, booked when the engagement ends.
- Referral ask at the win. The day a client accepts an offer is the day to ask who else they know who is looking.
If you coach clients through plateaus as well as job changes, mid-career plateau coaching strategies gives you a longer-engagement offer to add.

What does a 30/60/90-day launch plan look like?
A realistic plan gets you set up in the first month, selling in the second and refining in the third. If you are still employed, this works on evenings and weekends as long as you protect two or three blocks a week.
| Phase | Focus | Key actions | Done when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 30 | Foundations | Write your client sentence; design three packages; set prices; choose sole proprietorship or LLC; get an insurance quote; open a business bank account; set up booking, payments and your agreement; publish a short site | Someone could find you, book a call, sign and pay without emailing you |
| Days 31 to 60 | First clients | Message 50 people you know; ask five recruiters or HR contacts for referrals; post on LinkedIn twice a week; run consultations; launch a small group pilot | Three to five paying clients and a list of every conversation |
| Days 61 to 90 | Refine and repeat | Review intake answers and objections; adjust offer and price; add a lead magnet and email sequence; collect honest feedback and permission to quote it; add the first-90-days add-on | Ten clients served or in progress, and a repeatable weekly marketing routine |

How much does it cost to start a career coaching business?
A lean launch costs very little beyond your platform subscription, card processing and insurance; a comfortable launch adds a certification, a professional photo shoot and some paid help. The table shows the shape of each budget. Where a figure depends on your quote or state, it says so; dollar figures marked "example" are illustrative allowances, not quotes.
| Item | Lean launch | Comfortable launch |
|---|---|---|
| Coachful (booking, payments, agreements, programs, website, email) | Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients | Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients |
| Card processing | Stripe's standard rate per transaction | Stripe's standard rate per transaction |
| Business structure | Sole proprietorship (no filing) | LLC at your state's filing fee |
| EIN | $0 (IRS) | $0 (IRS) |
| Professional liability insurance | Quote-dependent | Quote-dependent, possibly higher limits |
| Coaching agreement | Your own template reviewed once | Example: $500 to $1,500 for an attorney-drafted agreement |
| Domain name | Example: about $15 a year | Example: about $15 a year |
| Photos | Phone photos in good light | Example: $300 to $800 for a professional shoot |
| Coach training or credential | None at launch | Program-dependent |
| Accountant | Self-prepared with a bookkeeping app | Example: a few hundred dollars for year-one setup and filing |

What mistakes should new career coaches avoid?
The most common mistakes are about focus and claims, not tools:
- Serving everyone. "Career coaching for professionals" gives no one a reason to choose you. Pick one client and one moment.
- Selling hours instead of outcomes. An open-ended hourly rate makes clients count minutes. Fixed packages with an end point sell faster.
- Guaranteeing jobs or salaries. You do not control hiring decisions, and outcome guarantees invite FTC trouble and refund disputes.
- Coaching on the free call. Give the prospect clarity about the next step, not the whole plan.
- Doing resume writing without saying so. If you rewrite documents, price it as a deliverable. Otherwise it quietly doubles your hours.
- No plan for after the offer. Without a first-90-days option or alumni community, every client is a one-off.
- Stitching together too many tools. Five subscriptions and three logins eat the evenings you should spend on outreach.
- Ignoring taxes until April. Set aside money from every payment and diary the quarterly estimated tax dates.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a certification to start a career coaching business?
Coaching credentials such as the ICF's ACC or PCC are voluntary, and many career coaches start on the strength of recruiting, HR or hiring-manager experience. Some employers and institutions prefer credentialed coaches, so a certification can help with corporate work later. Check your state and city for general business licenses either way.
How long does it take to start a career coaching business?
Following the plan above, you can be set up and taking bookings within 30 days and aim for your first few paying clients by day 60. Reaching a full practice takes longer and depends mostly on how consistently you do outreach.
Should I form an LLC or stay a sole proprietor?
The SBA describes a sole proprietorship as a good choice for low-risk businesses testing an idea, and an LLC as protecting owners from personal liability in most instances. Many career coaches start as sole proprietors and form an LLC once income is steady or they sign employer contracts. Check with an accountant or attorney for your state.
How much should I charge as a new career coach?
Work from your income goal and capacity, then compare with market data: PayScale's 2025 data and community reports put career coaching at roughly $100 to $250 an hour. Price packages rather than hours, and test your price on your first five prospects before changing it.
Can I promise clients they will get a job?
No. You do not control hiring, and the FTC requires that results shown in testimonials reflect what people generally achieve or that the expected results are made clear. Describe your process and what clients typically work on instead.
Can I start career coaching while still employed?
Yes, if your employment contract allows outside work and you avoid conflicts of interest, such as coaching candidates applying to your employer. Evening and weekend sessions suit many job seekers, who are often employed too.
What software do I need to start?
You need booking, payments, agreements, a way to deliver work between sessions, a website and email. You can buy these separately or use one platform. Coachful covers all of them with one login and a branded client app, and is not suitable if you need PayPal, HIPAA compliance or a Salesforce integration.
What is Coachful's free white-glove service?
It is a build service included on every Coachful plan. You describe what you need, such as a website, funnel, program or email sequence, attach up to 8 links and 10 files, and the team builds it in your account, usually within about 24 hours. It does not include video recording, logo design, ads or ongoing marketing.
How do I get career coaching clients without paid ads?
Start with former colleagues, recruiters and HR contacts, alumni groups and professional associations, then add two LinkedIn posts a week about your client's specific problems. A small group pilot can bring in several clients at once and gives you honest feedback early.
Do I need to track coaching hours?
Only if you plan to apply for an ICF credential, but it is far easier to log from day one than to reconstruct later. Coachful counts hours and distinct clients against ACC, PCC and MCC thresholds and exports an ICF client coaching log.
Ready to build your career coaching business?
The order matters more than the tools: client, offer, price, paperwork, then setup, then outreach. If you want booking, payments, agreements, programs, your website and email in one place, start a free trial of Coachful and ask the team to build your site and first program for you.
