How to Start an ADHD Coaching Business: A 90-Day Plan

How to Start an ADHD Coaching Business: A 90-Day Plan

Here is how to start an ADHD coaching business in eight steps: pick one specific client, design two or three packages built around between-session support, price them from your own capacity math, set up a legal structure, insurance and a coaching agreement with a clear scope line, put booking, payments and delivery on one platform, publish a simple website, land your first 10 clients through referral partners and ADHD communities, then keep them with daily check-ins and a 30/60/90-day plan. Working part time, about 90 days is a realistic target.

This guide assumes you have already decided to coach and have (or are finishing) your training. If you are still at that stage, read how to become an ADHD coach and our overview of ADHD coach certification routes first. What follows is about building the business: who pays, what you sell, what it costs, which rules apply and how to get booked.

A note before we start: we make Coachful, a coaching platform, and we recommend it in the tech section below. Everything else in this guide (the legal steps, the pricing method, the client channels) works whichever software you choose.

What are the steps to start an ADHD coaching business, at a glance?

The checklist below covers every step in order with a realistic time estimate and the kind of cost involved. Times assume you are working on the business part time alongside a job or other commitments.

StepTime (part time)Typical cost
1. Choose one client type and the problem you solve1 week$0
2. Design 2 or 3 packages1 week$0
3. Run your pricing math1 to 2 days$0
4. Pick a business structure, get an EIN (US)1 to 2 weeks$0 for a sole proprietorship and EIN; state fees for an LLC
5. Insurance and coaching agreement1 to 2 weeksInsurance quote; optional attorney review
6. Set up booking, payments, programs and check-ins2 to 5 daysMonthly software subscription
7. Publish a website with one clear call to action1 to 7 daysDomain name; site included in some platforms
8. Find your first 10 clientsWeeks 4 to 12Mostly time

If you want a one-page version to keep beside you, our coaching business plan template has a filled-in example you can adapt to ADHD coaching.

Is ADHD coaching a viable niche for a business?

Yes, if you are specific about who you serve and honest about what coaching is. ADHD coaching sells to a group that feels the problem every day (missed deadlines, lost paperwork, half-finished projects) and that often already has a diagnosis and a treatment team but still needs practical, week-to-week support with planning and follow-through.

Who pays for ADHD coaching?

In practice, three groups pay:

  • Adults paying for themselves. Professionals, founders, freelancers and graduate students who want systems that fit how their attention works. This is the largest and simplest market to start with.
  • Parents of older students. Parents often pay for coaching for a college student. The student is the client; the parent is the payer. Your agreement should say what, if anything, you share with the payer.
  • Employers and organisations. Some companies fund coaching as a workplace support. This is a slower sale, better as a year-two channel.

Coaching is usually paid out of pocket rather than through health insurance, and clients will ask about this early. Our guide on whether ADHD coaching is covered by insurance explains the options clients sometimes use to pay less, so you can answer the question confidently on a discovery call.

How do you check demand before you build anything?

You do not need a market report. You need evidence that the specific people you want to serve will pay you. Three quick checks:

  1. Count real conversations. List 30 people in your network who fit your client profile or know someone who does. If you cannot reach 30, your niche is too narrow or you need a different channel.
  2. Listen in the communities. Read ADHD forums, subreddits and support group threads for a week and write down the exact words people use for their problem. Those words become your website copy.
  3. Offer a paid pilot. Offer three people a short pilot at a reduced, clearly temporary price. If nobody says yes, adjust the client or the offer before you spend money on branding.

For the evidence behind coaching itself, including what studies have and have not shown, read what the research says about ADHD coaching. Quote it carefully in your marketing: summarise what was studied, do not promise outcomes.

What is in scope, and when do you refer?

ADHD coaching is not treatment. A coach does not diagnose ADHD, does not advise on medication and does not treat anxiety, depression or other conditions. Coaching works on goals, planning, routines and follow-through, alongside whatever care the client already has.

Refer the client to a doctor, psychiatrist, psychologist or therapist when they suspect ADHD but have never been assessed, when they have questions about medication, when you notice signs of depression, anxiety, substance use or an eating disorder, or when progress stalls for reasons that look clinical rather than practical. If a client is at risk of harming themselves, direct them to local emergency services or a crisis line straight away. Put this scope line in your agreement, on your website and in your intake form. Our post on signs someone needs an ADHD coach and when to see a doctor is a useful page to send prospects who are unsure which they need.

Thinking of launching your coaching business?

Answer a few questions and Coachful builds it around you: your website, programs, booking and payments. Ready in minutes.

Build your platform

Who exactly is your client, and what do you sell them?

Pick one client and one problem, then design packages around the gap between sessions, because that gap is where ADHD clients usually struggle. A weekly call alone rarely changes a week; a weekly call plus a daily nudge and a visible habit tracker often does.

Write a one-sentence client definition

Use this format: "I help [specific person] who [specific situation] to [specific outcome] without [what they are tired of]." Two examples:

  • "I help newly diagnosed adults in their 30s and 40s build a weekly planning routine they actually keep, without another productivity app they abandon in a week."
  • "I help self-employed creatives with ADHD get invoices, admin and client deadlines under control, without a rigid system that fights how they work."

Narrow beats broad here. "Adults with ADHD" is a population; "freelance designers with ADHD who keep missing invoices" is a client you can find, speak to and help.

Three example packages

These are structures, not price recommendations. Use the pricing math in the next section to set your own numbers.

  1. 12-week foundations (1:1). A 60-minute kickoff, then a weekly 45-minute call, a weekly planning goal, daily tasks, morning and evening check-ins, and two or three habits with streaks. Message support between calls within set hours. Paid in full or in three monthly instalments.
  2. Ongoing momentum (monthly 1:1). For graduates of the 12-week program: two calls a month, the same daily check-ins and habit tracking, and a monthly review. Monthly subscription, cancel with notice.
  3. Body-doubling and accountability group. Weekly group planning call, two or three co-working sessions a week, a private community feed and a weekly check-in. Lower price, higher volume, and a natural first step for people not ready for 1:1.

The Offers page in a demo account: four offers, three live, each with its own cover photo and price.

Our page on coaching packages shows how to set these up as offers with payment plans, and how to coach someone with ADHD covers the session methods and scripts that go inside them.

How should you price ADHD coaching?

Price from your revenue goal and your real capacity, not from what others charge. ADHD coaching often includes daily between-session touchpoints, so count that time, and be honest about how many clients you can hold well.

The table below walks through the method with illustrative example numbers. They are not market rates or a recommendation; replace every figure with your own.

StepExample (illustrative)How to work it out
Year-one revenue goal$60,000Living costs, business expenses, tax reserve and savings, added up
Weeks you will actually coach4452 minus holidays, sick days and admin or marketing weeks
Revenue needed per coaching weekabout $1,36460,000 ÷ 44
1:1 client slots you can hold well12Each slot = one weekly call plus reviewing daily check-ins
Revenue needed per client per weekabout $1141,364 ÷ 12
Monthly 1:1 package priceabout $455114 × 4, then round to a clean number
Same goal with only 8 clientsabout $680 a month1,364 ÷ 8 × 4: fewer slots means a higher price or a group offer

Three adjustments matter for this niche:

  • Price the package, not the hour. Clients buy a result and a structure. If you sell hours, the daily check-ins you review look like free extras.
  • Use payment plans and subscriptions. Many ADHD clients find a single large payment hard to commit to. A three-instalment plan or a monthly subscription lowers the barrier without lowering your price.
  • Set a clear missed-session policy. Missed or late sessions happen more often in this niche. Decide your rule (for example, one free reschedule per month with 24 hours' notice) and put it in the agreement before the first call, so it is a policy, not a negotiation.

Remember that taxes come out of revenue. In the US, self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare) on net self-employment earnings, and you owe it once those earnings reach $400 or more, according to the IRS self-employment tax page. Build a tax reserve into your goal before you divide it by clients.

What legal setup does an ADHD coaching business need?

At minimum: a business structure, a tax ID where relevant, professional liability insurance, a written coaching agreement and a plan for client data. The details vary by country and state, so treat the points below as a checklist to take to an accountant or attorney, not as legal advice.

Business structure

The US Small Business Administration describes the main options in its business structure guide. A sole proprietorship is automatic if you do business without registering another structure, but there is no separate entity, so you can be held personally liable for business debts; the SBA calls it "a good choice for low-risk businesses and owners who want to test their business idea." An LLC protects owners from personal liability "in most instances," and its profits can pass through to you, though LLC members still pay self-employment tax. An S corp is a tax election filed with the IRS on Form 2553, and an LLC can be taxed as one. Many coaches start as sole proprietors and form an LLC once revenue is steady; ask an accountant which fits your situation.

EIN and taxes (US)

  • EIN: the IRS issues an employer identification number online "in minutes for free," and "You never have to pay a fee for an EIN" (IRS EIN page). If you are forming an LLC, register with your state first, then apply.
  • Schedule C: as a sole proprietor you report business income or loss on Schedule C (Form 1040).
  • Estimated taxes: you generally must make quarterly estimated payments if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file (IRS estimated taxes). For 2026 the due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027 (Form 1040-ES (2026)). Set a calendar reminder for each one now.

Licenses and insurance

The SBA notes that "most small businesses need a combination of licenses and permits from both federal and state agencies," and that requirements depend on your activity and location (SBA licenses and permits). Check your Secretary of State and city or county websites for a general business license.

For insurance, the SBA describes professional liability insurance as cover for "businesses that provide services to customers" that "protects against financial loss as a result of malpractice, errors, and negligence" (SBA business insurance). Get two or three quotes and tell the insurer you coach clients with ADHD, so the policy matches the work. The SBA also notes that the liability protection an LLC gives you "has limits," which is one reason coaches carry insurance as well as an entity.

Your coaching agreement

Your agreement does more legal work than anything else here. For ADHD coaching, make sure it covers:

  • A plain scope line: coaching is not therapy, diagnosis or medical advice, and the client stays responsible for their own care.
  • Referral and emergency terms: when you will suggest professional help, and that you are not a crisis service.
  • Session, rescheduling and missed-session rules, plus your between-session message hours.
  • Payment terms, payment plans, refunds and cancellation.
  • Confidentiality and its limits, and what you share with a parent or employer who pays.
  • How client data is stored and how long you keep it.

Send it for e-signature before the first call, not after. Our page on coaching contracts shows how that works in practice.

Marketing rules: testimonials, claims and email

Three US rules are worth knowing before you publish a sales page:

  • Testimonials must be real and typical. The FTC's Endorsement Guides say endorsements "must be honest and not misleading," and testimonials showing exceptional results need proof they reflect what people generally achieve, or the ad must make clear what results are generally expected. The Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, in effect since October 21, 2024, prohibits fake reviews and lets courts impose civil penalties for knowing violations.
  • Avoid outcome promises. "Finally finish what you start" is a hope; "Guaranteed to fix your procrastination" is a claim you cannot back. In 2021 the FTC warned more than 1,100 businesses, including some in "investment and business coaching," about false or misleading earnings claims (FTC press release). That notice is about money-making claims, but the same caution applies to any result you promise.
  • Email follows CAN-SPAM. Use accurate sender details and honest subject lines, include a valid physical postal address and a clear opt-out, and honour opt-outs within 10 business days (FTC CAN-SPAM guide).

Client data

ADHD clients will tell you about diagnoses, medication and relationships. Collect only what you need for coaching, store it in one secure place rather than scattered across email, notes apps and spreadsheets, and say in your privacy policy how long you keep it. If you work inside a clinical practice, bill health insurance or need a signed business associate agreement, you need a system built for HIPAA. Coachful is not HIPAA-certified and is not meant for clinical record-keeping; it is GDPR-ready, which matters if you coach clients in the EU or UK. When the rules for your situation are unclear, check with an attorney.

What tech stack does an ADHD coaching business need?

You need booking with reminders, payments, an agreement with e-signature, a way to deliver programs with daily check-ins and habits, a client-facing app or portal, a website and email. You can assemble these from five separate tools or run them from one platform; for ADHD coaching, one place is easier for you and much easier for your clients.

The reason is practical. Every extra login is another place an ADHD client can forget to check. If their session link is in one email, the worksheet in another tool and the habit tracker in a third app, your support depends on their working memory, which is exactly what they hired you to help with.

Coachful as the home for the whole practice

Coachful is a coaching platform: one subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant, with one login for the coach and one branded app for the client. It is built for coaches who deliver programs rather than just sessions, solo coaches growing into a small team, and coaches replacing four to six separate tools. It does not offer HIPAA certification, PayPal, a permanent free plan, or a client app under your own App Store account (clients use the Coachful app with your branding). To start, take a free trial and ask the team to build your setup for you through the white-glove service described below. Current plans: (Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients).

Here is what each part replaces for an ADHD practice:

  • Scheduling tool: booking pages with availability rules, buffers, minimum notice and time-zone detection; two-way Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook calendar sync; built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links; email reminders plus SMS 24 hours before and WhatsApp one hour before once messaging is enabled. For clients who lose track of time, the one-hour WhatsApp reminder matters.
  • Payments and invoicing tool: payments through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account, with one-time payments, subscriptions, payment plans, coupons, refunds, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and an invoice per transaction. Coachful charges a 0% platform fee; you pay only Stripe or Razorpay processing.
  • Contract tool: coaching agreements with e-signature sent before the first call and stored on the client record.
  • Habit and check-in app: multi-week programs with weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, morning and evening check-ins, goals with progress bars, and streaks.
  • Client notes spreadsheet: a client record holding goals, check-ins, habits, notes, intake answers, payments and sessions, with a status of thriving, active, quiet or at risk, so you can see who has gone silent.
  • Community app: a community feed, group chat, direct messages and video events, with cohort groups created automatically when someone enrols in a program. Useful for body-doubling sessions.
  • Website builder and email tool: a section-based website builder with blog and custom domain, booking and lead-magnet funnels, and email broadcasts and sequences.

Michelle, the built-in AI assistant, works from your live practice data: she can draft program content and emails, brief you before a session and summarise recorded sessions. Asking questions and planning are included in your membership; confirmed builds and changes use AI credits. If you are working toward an ICF credential, Coachful also counts your coaching hours and distinct clients against ACC, PCC and MCC thresholds (see ICF hour tracking).

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, choose "We'll build it for you · FREE" and describe what you want: a website, a funnel, a sales page, a program, a course outline, a check-in flow, an email sequence or a form. You can attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files such as logos, photos and copy. The Coachful team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours. Nothing gets invented: no fake credentials, testimonials or prices; any gaps are left for you to fill. It does not include recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing. As one example, a menopause and midlife health coach starting from nothing received a five-page site in sage and cream with every button leading to a free 20-minute consultation. How do you set up your website, booking and payments?

Keep the website small: a homepage, an About page, a Work With Me page with your packages, and a Contact or booking page, all pointing to one action, which is booking a free discovery call. You can always add a blog later.

Website

Write the homepage in your clients' own words, the ones you collected from the communities. Lead with the problem and the outcome, show your scope line near the bottom, and repeat the same "book a call" button on every section. In Coachful you can start from one of 30 designed homepage templates, import an existing site, or ask the team to build the site for you from your notes.

The Sanctuary homepage template, one of the designed templates in Coachful's website builder.

ADHD-friendly design is also good design: short sections, clear headings, one button per screen, no autoplaying video, and a booking page that works in two taps on a phone. More detail is on our coaching website page.

Booking

Create one free 20 to 30 minute discovery call type and one session type per package. Add intake questions to the discovery booking (what they want help with, whether they have a diagnosis, whether they are working with a clinician, how they heard about you). Turn on buffers between calls so you are not rushing from one client to the next, and set minimum notice so nobody books you for ten minutes from now.

Payments

Connect your Stripe account (or Razorpay if you are in India) and create each package as an offer: the 12-week program with a pay-in-full and a three-instalment option, the monthly program as a subscription, and the group as a lower-priced subscription. Each transaction gets its own invoice, so you are not chasing paperwork. See coaching payment software for the full list of payment options.

How do you get your first 10 ADHD coaching clients?

Through people who already trust you and people who already serve your client: your own network, referral partners in the ADHD care world, and communities where your client asks for help. Paid ads come later, once you know which message converts.

The channels that fit this niche

  1. Your network. Message the 30 people on your demand list. Most first clients come from someone who knows you or knows someone who does.
  2. Clinician referral partners. Psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and ADHD-focused clinics often have patients who need practical support between appointments. Offer a short call to explain your scope, your referral-back process and how you handle clients who need clinical care.
  3. Campus disability and student support offices. If you coach students, these offices are a direct line to your client, and the payer is often a parent.
  4. ADHD communities and support groups. Answer questions helpfully for weeks before you mention coaching. Follow each group's rules on self-promotion.
  5. A free monthly workshop. A 45-minute session such as "ADHD-friendly weekly planning" gives people a taste of how you work. End with an invitation to a discovery call.
  6. Content in your clients' words. Short posts that answer one question each ("Why my to-do list never works, and what to do instead") on the one platform where your client spends time.

Three scripts you can adapt

To someone in your network: "Hi Sam, I've started an ADHD coaching practice, focused on [client] who want [outcome]. I'm taking three pilot clients this month. Do you know anyone who's been talking about this? I'd be grateful for an introduction."

To a clinician: "Hello Dr. Lee, I'm an ADHD coach working with adults on planning, routines and follow-through. I don't diagnose or advise on medication, and I refer back whenever something looks clinical. Could I have 15 minutes to explain how I work, in case it's useful for patients who want practical support between appointments?"

After a workshop: "Thanks for coming tonight. If you'd like help putting the weekly planning routine into practice, I have four discovery call slots next week. Here's the booking link. It's a free 20-minute call, and there's no pressure to sign up."

Run discovery calls that convert

Keep the call to 20 or 30 minutes: what they want to change, what they have tried, what gets in the way, then a description of the package that fits. If they are a fit, send the offer link and agreement the same day, while the motivation is fresh. If they are not, refer them on. Track every call so you can see your conversion rate after the first 10.

How do you deliver ADHD coaching so clients stay?

Retention in ADHD coaching comes from the days between sessions. Clients who see their progress daily, get a gentle prompt at the right time and feel noticed when they go quiet tend to stay; clients who only hear from you once a week tend to drift.

Build the program once, then reuse it

Turn your 12-week foundations package into a program: a weekly goal for each week, a few daily tasks, two or three habits, and a morning and evening check-in. The morning check-in asks for today's one priority; the evening check-in asks what got done and what got in the way. Every new client gets the same structure, adjusted to them.

Habits with streaks give clients a visible record that they are doing better than they feel. Keep habit lists short; two habits kept beat six habits abandoned.

Watch for the quiet client

Missed check-ins are often the first sign a client is struggling, and they are easy to miss across a full caseload. Coachful's client record marks each client as thriving, active, quiet or at risk, so a weekly scan of your client list shows who needs a short "How's this week going?" message before they disappear.

Add community and between-session support

Group body-doubling sessions, a community feed for wins and a cohort group for each program give clients somewhere to go between calls. If you want to offer more, the AI Coach feature lets selected clients chat with an AI version of you that you configure, for questions between sessions. Keep your scope line in mind: set it up for planning and accountability, not for anything clinical.

How much does it cost to start an ADHD coaching business?

A lean launch can cost little more than your software, insurance and a domain; a comfortable launch adds an LLC, an attorney review of your agreement and an accountant. Your training is the largest cost for most new coaches and is covered in our certification guide, so it is left out here.

The non-software figures below are illustrative examples, not quotes. Get real prices for your state and situation.

What mistakes do new ADHD coaches make?

Most early mistakes come from building too much before talking to clients, or from blurring the line between coaching and treatment.

  • Serving "everyone with ADHD." A broad niche makes your marketing vague and your referrals harder. Pick one client and widen later.
  • Selling sessions without between-session support. A weekly call alone often fails ADHD clients in the six days in between. Build check-ins and habits into every package.
  • Using too many tools. Each extra app is another thing your clients must remember to open. One login for them is part of the service.
  • Drifting into clinical territory. Do not comment on medication or diagnose. Keep your scope line visible and refer early.
  • No missed-session policy. Without a written rule, every missed session becomes an awkward negotiation and a lost hour.
  • Underpricing to compensate for nerves. Run the capacity math. If the number feels high, add a group offer instead of cutting your 1:1 price.
  • Testimonials that overpromise. Use real words from real clients, with permission, and avoid presenting exceptional results as typical.
  • Forgetting quarterly taxes. Put the four estimated tax dates in your calendar on day one.

For a broader list of what to think through before launching, see things to know before becoming an ADHD coach and our general guide on how to start a coaching business.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a certification to start an ADHD coaching business?

Coaching is generally not a licensed profession, but training and a credential make you safer and more credible, and referral partners such as clinicians often ask about them. Our guides on becoming an ADHD coach and ADHD coach certification compare the routes. Check whether your state or country has any rules for your title or services.

Should I start as a sole proprietor or form an LLC?

The SBA describes a sole proprietorship as a good choice for testing a business idea, while an LLC protects you from personal liability in most instances. Many coaches start as sole proprietors and form an LLC once revenue is steady. An accountant or attorney can tell you which fits your state and income.

Can I coach clients who haven't been diagnosed with ADHD?

You can coach people on planning and follow-through whether or not they have a diagnosis, but you should not suggest or confirm a diagnosis yourself. If a client suspects ADHD, encourage them to seek an assessment from a qualified clinician, and say so in your intake process.

How many clients do I need to make ADHD coaching a full-time income?

It depends on your revenue goal, your prices and how many clients you can hold well. Divide your yearly goal by the weeks you will coach and then by your client capacity to find the price you need, as in the pricing table above. If the result feels too high, add a group offer.

How do I handle clients who keep missing sessions?

Write a clear rescheduling and missed-session rule into your agreement before the first call, and send automatic reminders by email, SMS and WhatsApp. When someone misses repeatedly, raise it as a coaching topic, since it is often the very pattern they came to work on.

Is Coachful HIPAA-compliant?

No. Coachful is not HIPAA-certified and does not sign business associate agreements, so it is not suitable for clinical record-keeping or insurance billing. It is GDPR-ready and works well for coaching, which is not treatment. If you also work in a clinical role, keep clinical records in a system built for that.

What is Coachful's free white-glove service?

It is a free build service on every plan: you describe what you need (a website, funnel, program, check-in flow, email sequence or form), attach up to 8 links and 10 files, and the Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. It does not invent credentials, testimonials or prices, and it does not include video recording, logo design, ads or ongoing marketing. See the white-glove service guide.

Can I accept PayPal for ADHD coaching packages?

Not in Coachful, which takes payments through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account, including Apple Pay and Google Pay. If PayPal is essential for your audience, check that before choosing a platform.

Do I need a website before I get my first client?

No. Your first clients will probably come from your network and referral partners, and a booking link with a payment step is enough to start. A simple website helps once you contact clinicians and run workshops, because people will look you up.

How long does it take to start an ADHD coaching business?

About 90 days part time is realistic: around 30 days for decisions and setup, 30 for your first pilot clients and 30 to reach full price and a repeatable process. Setup can be faster if someone builds your website and programs for you.

Ready to open your ADHD coaching practice?

Start with the client and the offer, run the pricing math, get the legal basics in place, then put booking, payments, agreements and daily check-ins in one place your clients can actually keep track of. Coachful gives you that in one membership, and the team will build your website, funnel or first program for free so you can spend your first 30 days talking to clients instead of wiring tools together. Current plans: (Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients).
