How to Start an Image Consulting Business: A 2026 Plan

How to Start an Image Consulting Business: A 2026 Plan

Here is how to start an image consulting business in 2026: choose one client you can serve well (career changers, executives, new parents returning to work, people after a big life change), turn your skills into two or three fixed packages, price them from your target income backwards, register the business and buy professional liability cover, then put booking, payments, agreements and delivery on one platform so a client can find you, pay and start without a single email thread. After that, the work is getting your first ten clients through referral partners and visible proof, and keeping them with follow-up programs instead of one-off appointments.

This guide assumes you have already decided to do the work and want to build the business around it. It covers the offer, the numbers, the paperwork, the software, the first clients and a 90-day plan. We make Coachful, the coaching platform we recommend as the home for the business side, and we say so wherever it comes up.

What are the steps to start an image consulting business?

There are ten steps, and most people can complete the first eight in four to six weeks of part-time work. The table shows the order, a realistic time for each and whether it costs money up front.

If you want a broader version of this plan that applies to any coaching niche, read How to Start a Coaching Business in 2026: A 10-Step Plan. The rest of this article is specific to image work.

Is image consulting a viable business to start?

Yes, if you sell an outcome people already spend money chasing: looking credible in a new role, dressing a changed body, shopping less and wearing more, or presenting well on camera. People already pay stylists, personal shoppers, tailors and salon professionals for parts of this. Your business packages the whole result and stays with the client long enough for it to stick.

Who pays is the first question to settle, because it changes your price, your sales cycle and your marketing:

  • Individuals paying for themselves. Professionals stepping into leadership, people returning to work, people after divorce, weight change, pregnancy or a move. They decide quickly and pay by card.
  • Employers paying for staff. Presence workshops, new-manager onboarding, client-facing teams, interview preparation for graduates. Slower to close, higher fees, invoices instead of checkout. Our piece on employer-funded coaching and consulting scope covers how to keep fees and confidentiality clear when a company pays.
  • Partners who refer. Career coaches, headshot photographers, hair stylists, wedding planners and boutique owners meet your clients first. They do not pay you, but they fill your calendar.

On demand, we will not quote a market-size figure we cannot source. A more useful test costs nothing: list 30 people in your network who fit your chosen client, message ten of them about a free 20-minute style audit, and count how many book. If three or more book and one asks what a full package costs, you have enough demand to launch. If nobody books, change the client or the problem before you spend money.

Thinking of launching your coaching business?

Answer a few questions and Coachful builds it around you: your website, programs, booking and payments. Ready in minutes.

Build your platform

Do you need a certification?

No licence is required in most places to advise people on clothing, colour and presentation, and clients mostly buy on visible results. Training still helps with colour theory, body proportion and wardrobe planning, and professional associations such as the Association of Image Consultants International offer certification paths you can add later. Compare what each program teaches, what it costs and whether your target clients would recognise it before paying. Check your state and local rules too: the SBA notes that "most small businesses need a combination of licenses and permits from both federal and state agencies" (SBA, Apply for licenses and permits). If you plan to apply makeup or style hair hands-on, ask your state board whether that falls under cosmetology licensing.

Where does image consulting stop?

Image consulting is not therapy, medical advice or treatment. Clothes and colour can raise confidence, but if a client describes disordered eating, persistent distress about how their body looks, or depression, pause the styling work and suggest they speak to a doctor or licensed mental health professional. Put that scope line in your agreement and in your intake form so nobody is surprised.

Who is your client and what do you sell them?

Sell to one group with one problem first, and build two or three packages that each end in something the client can hold: a written style guide, an edited wardrobe, a shopping list, a set of outfits photographed for reference. Packages beat hourly rates because clients can compare them, you can deliver them the same way each time, and they make the next step obvious.

A strong niche sentence looks like this: "I help women stepping into director roles build a work wardrobe that looks senior without a full shopping overhaul." Or: "I help men over 40 who work remotely look sharp on camera and at the occasional in-person meeting." Each names the person, the moment and the result.

Here are three example packages built around that kind of client. Treat the structure as the template and adjust scope to your skills.

  1. Colour and Style Foundations. Intake questionnaire, one 90-minute colour and body-shape session (in person or by video with photos taken in daylight), and a written style guide with palette, silhouettes and a shopping priority list. Delivered within two weeks.
  2. Wardrobe Edit and Shop. Everything in Foundations, plus a closet audit (in person or by video), a capsule plan with outfit formulas, and one guided shopping session with a pre-built list. Delivered over four to six weeks.
  3. Executive Presence, 90 days. Foundations and Wardrobe Edit, plus a personal brand statement, camera and presentation setup for video calls, fortnightly calls, a weekly outfit-planning habit with check-ins, and a final review before a key event such as a board meeting or conference talk.

A corporate version of the third package works for employers: a half-day workshop for a team followed by short one-to-one sessions for anyone who wants them.

How should you price image consulting packages?

Price from your target income backwards, not from what a competitor charges. Decide how much you want to earn, how many client hours you can deliver each week, and how many hours each package really takes, including preparation, shopping research and follow-up messages.

The table below is an illustrative example, not market data. The figures are made up to show the method; replace them with your own.

LineExample figureHow to get yours
Target annual revenue$60,000 (example)Your living costs plus taxes, savings and business costs
Working weeks per year4652 minus holidays, illness and slow seasons
Weekly revenue needed$1,304Target revenue divided by working weeks
Hours per Foundations package5 (session, prep, writing the guide, follow-up)Time your first three deliveries honestly
Hours per Wardrobe Edit package14Include travel and shopping research
Hours per 90-day Presence program24Calls, check-in replies, event review
Effective hourly target$90 (example, if you sell about 15 paid hours a week)Weekly revenue divided by billable hours
Resulting example pricesFoundations $450, Wardrobe Edit $1,260, Presence $2,160Hours times hourly target, then round

Then sanity-check the mix. In this example, two Wardrobe Edits and one Presence program per month plus four Foundations packages would bring in about $6,480 a month. That is a calculation, not a forecast. Offer payment plans on the bigger packages so cash flow does not depend on clients paying everything at once. Our guide to pricing consulting services walks through value-based adjustments once you have results to point to.

How do you set up an image consulting business legally?

Choose a structure, register with your state if needed, get tax numbers, buy professional liability insurance, and use a signed agreement for every client. The details below are US-focused; check with an accountant or attorney where you live, because rules vary by state and country.

Business structure

A sole proprietorship is automatic once you trade without registering another structure. The SBA calls it "a good choice for low-risk businesses and owners who want to test their business idea", but you can be held personally liable for business debts. An LLC protects owners from personal liability "in most instances", and LLC members still pay self-employment tax. An LLC can also elect to be taxed as an S corp later (SBA, Choose a business structure). If you go into clients' homes and handle their clothes, the liability protection is worth discussing with an attorney.

Tax basics

  • An EIN is free from the IRS and issued online in minutes; "You never have to pay a fee for an EIN" (IRS, Get an EIN). Form your LLC first if you are using one.
  • Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare), and you file Schedule SE once net self-employment earnings reach $400 (IRS, Self-employment tax).
  • If you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file, you generally make quarterly estimated payments (IRS, Estimated taxes).
  • Sole proprietors report income and expenses on Schedule C (IRS, About Schedule C). Keep receipts for fabric swatches, colour drapes, training and software.

Insurance

The SBA describes professional liability insurance as cover for "Businesses that provide services to customers" that "protects against financial loss as a result of malpractice, errors, and negligence" (SBA, Get business insurance). For image work, also ask your broker about general liability if you visit homes or run workshops at venues, and what happens if a client's garment is damaged while you handle it.

Agreements, photos and data

Your agreement should cover scope (styling advice, not tailoring, therapy or medical guidance), what each package includes, the cancellation and rescheduling policy, refunds, who pays for purchased items, and how you handle client photos. Image work creates sensitive material: full-length photos, closet pictures, sometimes body measurements. Store them in one secure place, delete them when the engagement ends unless the client agrees otherwise, and get separate written consent before you use any before-and-after image in marketing.

Two FTC points matter for this niche. If you earn commission from a retailer or get free products from a brand you recommend, the Endorsement Guides say a connection consumers would not expect must be disclosed clearly (FTC, Endorsement Guides). And testimonials must be real: the Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, in effect since October 21, 2024, prohibits fake reviews and incentives tied to a particular sentiment (FTC, Reviews and Testimonials Rule). When you start a newsletter, CAN-SPAM requires a working opt-out honoured within 10 business days and a valid postal address (FTC, CAN-SPAM guide).

What tech stack does an image consulting business need?

You need six things: a website, a booking page, a way to take payments, signed agreements, a place to deliver style guides and follow-up work, and email. Most new consultants stitch together four to six tools for this. We recommend running all of it from Coachful, so the client has one login from first booking to final review and you have one dashboard.

What Coachful is. Coachful is a coaching platform. One membership covers booking, payments, coaching agreements, programs with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant called Michelle. Your clients get your branding inside the Coachful app. It suits solo consultants who deliver programs rather than single sessions, and people replacing several tools.

What it does not do. It is not HIPAA-certified and not built for clinical records. It does not take PayPal; payments run through your own Stripe or Razorpay account. There is no permanent free plan. The client app ships under the Coachful listing with your branding, not under your own App Store account. It is not a general website builder for non-coaching sites.

Here is what each part replaces, with other vendors' prices as listed in October 2026:

JobToolWhat it coversMonthly cost
CoachfulAll-in-oneWebsite, booking, payments, agreements, programs, courses, community, email, AI assistantLite: $29/month for up to 5 clients

A typical do-it-yourself stack of Acuity, HoneyBook and a paid Kit plan already costs more than $80 a month before you add a website or a course tool, and your client still logs into three places. For a full breakdown of every piece, see online coaching business software.

Coachful payments run through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account with a 0% platform fee since August 2026, so you only pay Stripe or Razorpay processing. You can sell one-time packages, subscriptions for seasonal edits, payment plans for the 90-day program, coupons and order bumps (for example, adding a shopping session at checkout). Each transaction gets an invoice, and you can raise manual invoices for corporate clients. Current plans: (Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients). If you have up to 15 clients at once, the relevant plan is Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients.

Why Coachful stands out for a new consultant

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. On every plan, you can open Create, choose "We'll build it for you", describe what you want and attach up to eight reference links and up to ten files such as your logo, photos, brand colours and draft copy. The Coachful team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours. It can be a website, a funnel, a sales page for your Wardrobe Edit package, a program, a course outline, an email sequence, an intake form or a link-in-bio page. Nothing is invented: no fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and gaps are left for you to fill. It does not include recording videos, logo design or running ads. One recent example: a menopause and midlife health coach starting from nothing got a five-page site in sage and cream with every button leading to a free 20-minute consultation, which is close to what most image consultants need on day one. Read more about the free white-glove service.

How do you build the website, booking and payments?

Build one homepage that names your client and the result, one page per package with price and what is included, and one booking button for a free consultation. Image consulting is visual, so your site needs real photos of your work (with consent) and a clean, editorial layout more than it needs many pages.

In Coachful, the section-based website builder has 30 designed homepage templates, a blog, custom domain and SEO settings. Templates such as Atelier or Velvet suit a fashion-led brand. If you already have a site, the Import website option brings it in. See the coach website builder page for details.

Here is a short walkthrough of the website builder:

Booking. Create three session types: a free 20-minute consultation, a paid colour session, and a closet audit with a longer duration and a travel buffer. Coachful booking pages support availability rules, buffers, minimum notice and time-zone detection, with two-way Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook sync. Video sessions can use built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links. Add intake questions on the booking form: current role, upcoming events, budget for new purchases, favourite and least favourite pieces. Email reminders go out automatically, and SMS (24 hours before) and WhatsApp (1 hour before) reminders work once messaging is enabled. The scheduling software page has the full list.

Payments and agreements. Attach a price to each package, turn on a payment plan for the 90-day program, and send the coaching agreement for e-signature before the first call. Signed agreements are stored on the client record. See coaching contracts and coaching payment software.

Funnels. A lead-magnet funnel is the simplest growth tool for this niche. Offer a free "Find your best neutrals" guide or a five-day "closet reset" email series in exchange for an email address, then follow with an invitation to book a consultation. Coachful funnels support pixels and UTM tracking so you know which Instagram post or partner sent each lead.

Which one looks like you?

Coachful builds your coaching website from a few answers, in a design chosen for your niche, with programs, booking and payments ready behind it.

Build your platform

How do you get your first 10 image consulting clients?

Get them through people who already see your clients at the moment they want help, and through proof you can show. Paid ads rarely work before you have results to display. Aim for three groups in parallel.

1. Proof clients (weeks 1 to 4)

Offer two or three people a free or heavily discounted Foundations package in exchange for honest feedback and written consent to use photos and a testimonial. Under FTC rules, if they got the service free, say so next to the testimonial. Document the process: the palette you chose, three outfits before and after, what they said changed.

2. Referral partners (weeks 2 to 12)

Make a list of 20 local or online professionals who meet your clients first: career coaches, recruiters, headshot photographers, hair stylists, tailors, wedding planners and boutique owners. Send a short note:

"Hi Sam, I am an image consultant working with professionals stepping into leadership roles. Your clients often book a headshot right after a promotion, which is the same moment mine book me. Would you be open to a 15-minute call to see if we could refer to each other? I am happy to offer your clients a free 20-minute wardrobe consultation."

Follow up once after a week. Two active partners can fill a calendar on their own. If a partner earns a referral fee, agree it in writing and disclose it to clients.

3. Your own network and content (weeks 1 to 12)

  • Direct messages. Message ten people a week who fit your niche sentence: "I am opening three spots for a style audit this month, aimed at people preparing for a new role. Would that be useful for you or someone you know?"
  • LinkedIn for professional clients. Post one practical tip a week (how to dress for a video panel, three jacket fits that read senior) and one short story from a proof client.
  • Instagram for personal clients. Outfit formulas, colour comparisons and closet edits, always with consent.
  • Talks. Offer a free 30-minute "dressing for your next role" talk to alumni groups, women's networks, coworking spaces and graduate career services. End with a booking link.

Track every lead in one place. Coachful's prospects view records the source and stage of each lead, and the intakes page shows how many consultations convert. More tactics are in how to get clients as a business coach, which applies well to corporate image work.

How do you deliver results and keep image clients coming back?

Deliver each package as a short program with a clear end result, then give clients a reason to return: seasonal wardrobe edits, event preparation, or a membership with monthly outfit reviews. One-off appointments leave you selling from zero every month.

A laptop showing a client program view and a phone showing a habit tracker beside an open capsule wardrobe
A client's enrolled program in Coachful on a laptop and the habit tracker on a phone, beside an open capsule wardrobe.

In Coachful, build each package as a multi-week program with weekly goals and daily tasks. For the Wardrobe Edit that might look like:

  • Week 1: intake form, colour session, style guide delivered as a download.
  • Week 2: closet audit; tasks to remove items that fail the palette and fit checks.
  • Week 3: capsule plan with outfit formulas; a daily habit of planning tomorrow's outfit the evening before.
  • Week 4: shopping session from the pre-built list; evening check-in asking which outfit felt most like them.
  • Weeks 5 and 6: wear-test the capsule, morning check-ins on confidence, final review call.

Habits, streaks and morning and evening check-ins show you who is engaged and who has gone quiet. Every client record holds goals, check-ins, notes, intake answers, payments and sessions, and marks each client as thriving, active, quiet or at risk, so you know who needs a nudge before they drift.

Courses for scale. Once you have taught the same lessons ten times, turn them into a self-paced course: "Build a 30-piece work capsule" with modules on palette, fit, formulas and shopping. Coachful courses support modules, lessons, drip release and completion tracking, and you can sell them alongside your packages or bundle them in. See online course platform for coaches.

Community and groups. A small group program, for example eight people preparing for job interviews, works well with a cohort community. Coachful creates cohort groups automatically on program enrollment, with a feed, group chat and video events. Members share outfit questions between calls, and you answer once for everyone. More on group coaching software.

AI support between sessions. Michelle, the built-in assistant, works from your live practice data: it can draft program content and follow-up emails, summarise recorded sessions and brief you before a call. You can also configure an AI Coach, an AI version of you that selected clients can chat with between sessions about questions like "does this blazer fit my palette?". Questions and planning with Michelle are included in your membership; confirmed builds and changes use AI credits. See AI coaching assistant.

Retention offers. Sell a spring and autumn wardrobe edit as a subscription, a pre-event review before weddings or conferences, and a returning-client rate. Review retention monthly with the measures in six coaching business KPIs.

What does a 30/60/90-day launch plan look like?

Spend the first 30 days on the offer and setup, the next 30 on proof and partners, and the last 30 on paid clients and your first follow-up program.

How much does it cost to start an image consulting business?

A lean launch can stay in the low hundreds of dollars plus your monthly software, while a comfortable launch with certification, a professional photo shoot and a colour drape kit costs more. What mistakes do new image consultants make?

  • Selling hours instead of results. "$100 an hour" invites clients to cut sessions short. Sell the Wardrobe Edit, with a deliverable.
  • Serving everyone. Brides, executives and teenagers need different marketing. Pick one group for the first six months.
  • Using client photos without written consent. Get a separate signed consent for marketing, and honour withdrawals.
  • Hiding retailer commissions. Disclose any affiliate or commission relationship clearly, as the FTC Endorsement Guides require.
  • Promising outcomes you cannot control. "You will get promoted" is not yours to promise. Promise the guide, the wardrobe and the support.
  • Too many tools. Separate booking, invoicing, contracts and email logins mean more missed messages and more monthly bills.
  • No follow-up offer. A client who finished a closet edit in March should hear from you before autumn.
  • Underpricing shopping time. Research before a shopping session often takes as long as the session itself. Count it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run an image consulting business online?

Yes. Colour analysis can be done over video with photos taken in natural daylight, closet audits can run on a video call with the client walking you through their wardrobe, and shopping can be done from links you send. Many consultants combine online packages with occasional in-person sessions for local clients.

Do I need a licence to be an image consultant?

In most places, advising on clothing and presentation does not require a specific licence, but general business licences and permits may apply depending on your state and city. If you apply makeup or style hair hands-on, check with your state board. The SBA's licences and permits section is a good starting point.

How should I structure my first packages?

Start with two or three fixed packages, each ending in a deliverable: a style guide, an edited wardrobe, or a 90-day presence program with check-ins. Price each from the real hours it takes and your target hourly rate, then adjust after your first five clients.

Should I form an LLC right away?

Not necessarily. A sole proprietorship is the default and the SBA describes it as suitable for testing a low-risk idea, but it leaves you personally liable. If you visit homes, handle valuable garments or sign corporate contracts, ask an attorney whether an LLC makes sense for you.

How do I get clients without a big social media following?

Use referral partners who meet your clients first, such as career coaches, headshot photographers, recruiters and stylists, plus direct messages to your own network and free talks for professional groups. A following helps later, but partners and proof clients fill the first calendar.

What is Coachful and who is it for?

Coachful is a coaching platform that puts booking, payments, agreements, programs with habits and check-ins, courses, community, a website with funnels and email in one membership, with one branded app for clients. It suits image consultants who deliver multi-week programs and want to replace several tools. You can start with a free trial and ask the team to build your setup.

What is Coachful's free white-glove service?

From Create, choose "We'll build it for you" and describe what you need, such as a website, a sales page, a funnel, a program or an email sequence, with up to eight reference links and ten files. The Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours, on every plan. It does not include recording videos, logo design or ad management.

Can I sell to companies as well as individuals?

Yes. Package a workshop for a team plus optional one-to-one sessions, quote it as a fixed fee, and invoice the employer. Agree up front what you will and will not report back to the company about individual employees.

What does Coachful not do that an image consultant might need?

It does not take PayPal, is not HIPAA-certified, and the client app runs under the Coachful listing with your branding rather than your own App Store account. It is not a general website builder for non-coaching sites, so use it for your consulting site and booking rather than, say, an online clothing shop.

How long does it take to launch?

With part-time effort, most people can have packages, a website, booking and payments live within 30 days, proof clients by day 60, and their first paying clients by day 90. The pace depends far more on how quickly you contact referral partners than on setup.

Ready to set up the business side? Start a free trial, request your free white-glove build, and have your booking page live this week. If you consult for professionals, the business coaches page shows the features they use most.
