ActiveCampaign vs ConvertKit for Coaches: 2026 Comparison

ActiveCampaign vs ConvertKit for Coaches: 2026 Comparison

In the ActiveCampaign vs ConvertKit decision, the short answer for coaches is this: ActiveCampaign is the deeper automation engine, built for segmented, branching email and a contact CRM, while ConvertKit (renamed Kit) is the simpler creator newsletter tool with a generous free plan and built-in sales of digital products. Neither books sessions, holds client records or delivers a coaching program between calls. If your business runs on 1:1 or group coaching rather than on a newsletter, a third option, an all-in-one coaching platform, may replace both plus the four or five tools you would bolt on.

We make Coachful, one of those all-in-one coaching platforms, so read our verdict with that in mind. Every ActiveCampaign and Kit figure below comes from the vendors' own pricing pages, pricing catalog and help centers as listed in October 2026, and we say plainly where each tool beats ours.

What is the short answer by use case?

Pick by what your email has to do and what else your business needs. Here are five common situations.

  • You mainly publish a newsletter and sell a few downloads: Kit. Its free Newsletter plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers and it can sell digital products and subscriptions with no monthly fee for its Commerce feature.
  • You run complex, branching nurture sequences and lead scoring: ActiveCampaign. Its automation builder, conditional content and advanced segmentation (Pro and up) go further than Kit's.
  • You coach clients through programs and need booking, payments, contracts and check-ins: neither on its own. That is where a coaching platform such as Coachful fits.
  • You need HIPAA support for email: ActiveCampaign Enterprise lists HIPAA support. Kit does not, and neither does Coachful.
  • You are just starting and want the lowest outlay: Kit's free plan for email alone, or a coaching platform with a free trial if you want the whole client journey from day one.

How do ActiveCampaign and ConvertKit compare side by side?

ActiveCampaign is an email automation platform with a CRM attached; Kit is a newsletter and creator commerce tool. Our ranking criteria, stated plainly: one login for the whole client journey, delivery between sessions, total stack cost, and setup effort (including whether someone will build it for you).

Kit (formerly ConvertKit)Newsletters and digital product salesNoKit Commerce, 3.5% + $0.30 per US transactionNoFree up to 10,000 subscribers; Creator from $39/month

Public sentiment differs too. On Trustpilot, Kit showed 3.9 from 162 reviews when checked in October 2026. ActiveCampaign's page showed 2.7 in its heading (the star graphic said 2.5) from 1,452 reviews. Coachful showed 4.5 from 21 reviews, a much smaller sample, so weigh it accordingly.

How much do ActiveCampaign and ConvertKit cost?

At 1,000 contacts, ActiveCampaign runs from $15 to $145 a month billed yearly, and Kit runs from free to $79 a month. Both raise the price as your list grows, so the right comparison is at your list size, not at the headline number.

ActiveCampaign pricing, as listed in October 2026

The rendered pricing page shows per-month prices billed yearly for 1,000 contacts. Monthly billing prices come from the page's own pricing catalog, and its yearly totals divided by 12 match the rendered prices exactly.

PlanMonthly billingBilled yearly (per month)Key limits at 1,000 contactsAt 2,500 contacts (monthly / yearly per month)
CoachfulLite: $29/month for up to 5 clientsFlat monthly plans; monthly plans cancel in one clickLower plans cap clients; Pro is unlimited (Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients)Price is set by clients, not email contacts
ActiveCampaign Starter$19$15 ($180/year)10,000 sends/month, 5 actions per automation, no landing pages, no payment or scheduling integrations$49 / $39
ActiveCampaign Plus$59$49 ($588/year)10,000 sends/month, landing pages, Calendly, Acuity, PayPal and Stripe integrations$119 / $95
ActiveCampaign Pro$99$79 ($948/year)12,000 sends/month, 3 seats, predictive sending, conditional content$189 / $149
ActiveCampaign Enterprise$179$145 ($1,740/year)15,000 sends/month, 5 seats, HIPAA support, custom objects$319 / $255

The add-ons matter for coaches who want a sales pipeline. Deal pipelines need the Enhanced CRM "Pipelines" add-on, which the catalog prices at a base of $49, $85 or $119 a month on Plus, Pro or Enterprise, plus $19, $29 or $49 per seat. Custom reporting costs $159 a month on Plus and Pro. SMS, WhatsApp messaging and transactional email are sold separately. The FAQ says "There are no setup costs or hidden fees", and there is a free 14-day trial with no credit card, plus a 30-day refund guarantee on paid plans.

Kit (ConvertKit) pricing, as listed in October 2026

Kit's pricing page blocked our fetcher, so these figures come from Kit's own help center. Annual billing is described as "2 months free".

PlanStarting priceSubscribersWhat it adds
CoachfulLite: $29/month for up to 5 clientsEmail lists included; plans set by client countBooking, payments, contracts, programs, courses, community, website, funnels, email
Kit Free (Newsletter)$0Up to 10,000Unlimited forms, landing pages and broadcasts, tagging, digital products and subscriptions, broadcast A/B tests

Kit Pro$79/monthUp to 1,000 at that price, then scalesContent A/B tests, deliverability reporting, engagement scoring, unlimited team members

Kit Commerce has no monthly fee but charges 3.5% + $0.30 per US transaction, all-in, including card processing. As an example, a $500 program sold through Kit Commerce would cost $17.80 in fees. Kit offers a 14-day free trial on Creator and Pro with no credit card.

What does the whole stack cost?

Neither tool is the whole bill for a coach. Here is an illustrative stack for a coach with about 1,000 contacts who needs automated sequences, booking, payments and a place to deliver a program.

  • ActiveCampaign route: Plus at $59 a month (the lowest plan with scheduling and Stripe integrations), plus a separate scheduling tool (see our Calendly pricing breakdown), plus Stripe fees, plus a course or client portal tool, plus an e-signature tool for contracts.
  • Kit route: Creator at $39 a month for sequences, 3.5% + $0.30 on each sale, plus the same separate scheduling, client portal and contract tools.
  • Coachful route: one plan (Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients) with booking, contracts, programs, courses, email and website included in your Coachful membership; card processing is billed by your own Stripe or Razorpay account with no platform fee on top.

The real comparison is your list size and your client count. If your list is large and your client roster small, an email tool can stay cheap; if you serve many clients through programs, separate tools add up quickly.

What is ActiveCampaign, and who is it for?

ActiveCampaign is an email marketing automation platform with a contact CRM, strongest at segmented sequences and multi-step automations. It suits coaches with large lists, several offers and a clear funnel they want to fine-tune.

ActiveCampaign homepage presenting its email marketing automation platform
ActiveCampaign's homepage in October 2026.

Its plan ladder is steep in what it unlocks. Starter gives multi-step automation, an AI campaign builder, 250+ email templates and 950+ automation recipes, but caps each automation at 5 actions, has only standard and inline forms, and has no landing pages or payment integrations. Plus adds landing pages, site messages, scheduling and payment integrations and unlimited automation actions. Pro adds predictive sending, conditional content, advanced segmentation, attribution and split automations. Enterprise adds single sign-on, HIPAA support and custom objects.

What ActiveCampaign does not do for a coach is equally clear from its documentation: no built-in booking calendar, no built-in invoicing or checkout, no course hosting, no client portal or client app, no coaching programs, habit tracking or check-ins. Contacts export to CSV, but contact notes cannot be exported, which matters if you keep session notes there. If you are already wrestling with it, our guides on managing client emails without ActiveCampaign and managing coaching pipelines without ActiveCampaign walk through the alternatives.

Pick it over Coachful if email automation is the core of your business, you need lead scoring, conditional content or Salesforce integration, or you need HIPAA support on the Enterprise plan.

What is ConvertKit (Kit), and who is it for?

Kit, formerly ConvertKit, is an email and newsletter platform for creators, with landing pages and simple digital product sales. It suits coaches whose main asset is an audience they write to every week.

The free Newsletter plan is the strongest in this comparison: up to 10,000 subscribers, unlimited forms, landing pages and broadcasts, tagging and segmentation, broadcast A/B tests, the Creator Network for recommendations, and the ability to sell digital products and subscriptions. The catch for coaches is that automations and email sequences need a paid plan, so a welcome series for new leads starts at Creator. Pro adds engagement scoring, deliverability reporting, Facebook Custom Audiences and a referral system.

Kit fulfills digital products only. It has no scheduling, client records or session management, and no course portal, community, habits or check-ins for clients. Subscribers export to CSV from the dashboard. For how Kit stacks up against other newsletter tools, see ConvertKit vs MailerLite, ConvertKit vs Mailchimp and Flodesk vs ConvertKit.

Pick it over Coachful if you mainly publish a newsletter, your list is under 10,000 and you want to pay nothing, or you sell downloads and paid newsletters rather than coaching.

How do the features compare, one by one?

On email depth, ActiveCampaign leads; on simplicity and free sending, Kit leads; on everything that happens after someone becomes a client, both stop. Here is each area in turn.

Email automation and sequences

ActiveCampaign's builder supports branching, goals, split automations and, on Pro, predictive sending and conditional content. It is the more capable tool for a coach running several lead magnets into several offers. Kit's visual automations and sequences cover the common creator patterns (opt-in, tag, sequence, pitch) and are easier to learn, but they start on the paid Creator plan.

Coachful includes email lists, broadcasts and multi-step sequences with triggers, delays, branching and A/B splits. It does not try to match ActiveCampaign's lead scoring, predictive sending or custom objects. The difference is that its triggers can come from coaching events, such as a booking or a program enrollment, because those live in the same system.

Here is a short walkthrough of email inside Coachful:

Forms, landing pages and funnels

Kit includes unlimited forms and landing pages even on the free plan. ActiveCampaign Starter has only standard and inline forms; landing pages arrive on Plus. Neither is a full website builder for a coaching practice.

Coachful has a section-based website builder with a blog, custom domain and SEO settings, plus booking, application, lead magnet and checkout funnels with pixels and UTM tracking, and a link-in-bio page that sells. About 25 funnel templates give you a starting point.

Booking and scheduling

Neither email tool books sessions. ActiveCampaign integrates with Calendly, Acuity Scheduling and Eventbrite on Plus and above; Kit has no scheduling at all, so you would connect a separate booking tool through its API or another integration service.

Coachful's booking pages handle availability rules, buffers, minimum notice and time-zone detection, with two-way Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook sync, built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet and Teams links, email reminders, and SMS or WhatsApp reminders once messaging is enabled. Intake questions can be asked at booking. More on the scheduling software page.

Payments and checkout

ActiveCampaign does not process payments; its PayPal and Stripe integrations (Plus and above) feed purchase data into automations. Kit Commerce sells digital products and subscriptions at 3.5% + $0.30 per US transaction, which is simple but costs more per sale than plain card processing on large coaching packages.

Coachful takes payments through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account: one-time, subscriptions, payment plans, order bumps, coupons, refunds, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and Stripe Tax, with an invoice per transaction. Since August 2026 the Coachful platform fee is 0%, so you pay only Stripe or Razorpay processing. Coachful does not support PayPal. See coaching payment software for details.

CRM and pipelines

ActiveCampaign has a contact CRM, but deal pipelines need the paid Enhanced CRM add-on on Plus or above. Kit has subscriber profiles with tags, not a CRM. Coachful has a leads board for prospects and a client record that holds goals, check-ins, habits, notes, intake answers, tags, payments, sessions and an AI briefing, with each client marked thriving, active, quiet or at risk. It does not have a multi-stage deal board for large sales teams or a Salesforce or HubSpot integration. See the coaching CRM page.

Data export

ActiveCampaign exports contacts to CSV with fields, scores and tags, but not contact notes. Kit exports subscribers to CSV. Coachful exports full client data as a ZIP (roster, notes, check-ins, goals, habits, sessions, form responses), and courses export separately.

Which one looks like you?

Coachful builds your coaching website from a few answers, in a design chosen for your niche, with programs, booking and payments ready behind it.

Build your platform

What does the client experience look like in each?

With ActiveCampaign or Kit, your client experiences email and nothing else: they receive messages, click links and land somewhere else to book, pay, sign or learn. With Coachful, they get one branded home and app where sessions, programs, habits, check-ins, courses and community live.

That difference shows up between sessions. A client in a 12-week program needs to know this week's goal, tick off daily tasks, log a habit and send a check-in. An email tool can remind them, but the work happens elsewhere, and you see the results only if you build that elsewhere yourself. In Coachful, morning and evening check-ins, streaks and goal progress feed the client record, so a quiet client shows up as quiet before they drift away.

One honest limit: the client app ships under the Coachful listing with your branding, not under your own App Store account. And Coachful does not sync with Garmin, Fitbit, Whoop or Oura. For group work, cohort groups are created automatically when clients enroll in a program; see group coaching software.

Which should you pick, ActiveCampaign or ConvertKit?

For pure email, choose ActiveCampaign if you need depth and Kit if you need simplicity and a free start. For a coaching business, our ranking by the criteria above is:

  1. Coachful: for coaches who deliver programs, want booking, payments, contracts, email and client delivery under one login, and want the setup built for them.
  2. Kit: for newsletter-first coaches with small client rosters, especially under 10,000 subscribers where the free plan applies.
  3. ActiveCampaign: for coaches with large lists, several funnels and a team that will actually use lead scoring, conditional content or a CRM pipeline.

By coach type:

  • New coach with a handful of clients: start on one platform rather than a stack. The for new coaches page shows what that looks like.
  • Writer or podcaster who coaches on the side: Kit keeps sending free while you grow the list.
  • Established coach with an ad-driven funnel: ActiveCampaign Pro gives attribution and split automations; pair it with a client platform.
  • Health or wellness coach handling protected health information: ActiveCampaign Enterprise lists HIPAA support for email; clinical records belong in a clinical system, not an email tool or Coachful.
  • Coach running cohorts or a small team: look at a coaching platform with seats and per-coach availability, such as Coachful's team plans.

What is the third option, and when does Coachful beat both?

Coachful is a coaching platform where one subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant. It beats both email tools when your revenue comes from clients rather than from list size.

Coachful Automations screen showing app automation, reminder and Instagram automation choices
Coachful's Automations screen with app, reminder and Instagram automation choices; no automations are active in this demo.

Who it is for: coaches who deliver programs, not just sessions; solo coaches growing into a small team; and coaches replacing four to six tools. Pricing uses flat monthly plans where lower plans cap the number of clients and Pro is unlimited (Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients).

What it does that the email tools do not:

  • Booking pages with calendar sync, video links, reminders, paid sessions and session credits.
  • Coaching agreements with e-signature sent before the first call; see coaching contracts.
  • Multi-week programs with weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, check-ins and streaks.
  • Courses with drip and completion tracking, a community feed, group chat and video events.
  • Instagram automations: someone comments a keyword and receives your booking link or lead magnet in a DM, landing in the same lead records.
  • Michelle, the built-in AI assistant, which drafts emails and content, builds programs and briefs you before sessions from live practice data. Questions are included in the membership; confirmed builds use AI credits.
  • ICF credential tracking that counts hours and clients toward ACC, PCC and MCC; see ICF hour tracking.

When it does not beat them: Coachful is not HIPAA-certified and signs no BAA. It has no PayPal and no permanent free plan, so Kit's free tier is cheaper for a list-only business. It has no lead scoring, predictive sending or Salesforce and HubSpot integrations, so an ActiveCampaign power user would give up depth. It has no third-party plugins, and its affiliate program records payouts manually rather than sending them.

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, choose "We'll build it for you" and describe what you need: a website, funnel, sales page, program, course outline, email sequence, form, link in bio or automation. Attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files, such as your logo, photos and existing copy. The Coachful team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours, and invents nothing: no fake credentials, testimonials or prices; gaps are left for you to fill. A business mentor for beauty professionals, for example, got a 12-week mentorship sales page, a free start-up guide funnel and rewritten follow-up emails. A leadership coach with a Squarespace renewal days away got one clean homepage with a repeated "talk with me" button. It does not cover recording videos, logo design or ad management. How to start: open a free trial, request the free white-glove build for whatever you would otherwise rebuild from your email tool, and have your clients, programs and content imported for you during onboarding. Then export your list from ActiveCampaign or Kit as CSV and bring it across. The coaching software page shows the full product.

How do you move from ActiveCampaign or Kit without losing anything?

Export first, then rebuild sequences, then switch your forms. Both tools export contacts to CSV, so the list is the easy part; automations and notes are not.

  1. Export contacts. In ActiveCampaign, use Contacts overview, then Export; the download link stays valid for 7 days, and tags arrive in a single column. In Kit, export all subscribers or a segment from the dashboard.
  2. Save contact notes separately. ActiveCampaign does not export contact notes, so copy any client notes by hand before you cancel.
  3. List your live automations. Write down each trigger, delay and email so they can be rebuilt as Coachful sequences, or ask the white-glove team to rebuild an email sequence for you.
  4. Swap forms and landing pages. Replace embedded forms with Coachful funnels and update links in your bio, emails and website.
  5. Run both for a short overlap. Keep the old tool until the new sequences have sent correctly, then cancel.

Frequently asked questions

Is ConvertKit the same as Kit?

Yes. ConvertKit is now called Kit, and its help center documents the product under that name. Plans, pricing and features in this comparison refer to Kit as documented in October 2026.

Is ActiveCampaign or ConvertKit cheaper for coaches?

Kit is cheaper at the bottom because its free plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers, though sequences need Creator from $39 a month. ActiveCampaign Starter is $15 a month billed yearly at 1,000 contacts, but it lacks landing pages and payment integrations, so most coaches would need Plus at $49 a month billed yearly.

Which has better automation, ActiveCampaign or Kit?

ActiveCampaign. Its builder supports unlimited actions from Plus, split automations, conditional content and predictive sending on Pro. Kit's visual automations are simpler and easier to learn, which suits many solo coaches.

Can either tool book coaching sessions?

No. ActiveCampaign connects to Calendly, Acuity Scheduling and Eventbrite on Plus and above, and Kit has no scheduling. Coachful has booking built in with calendar sync and reminders.

Can I take payments with ActiveCampaign or Kit?

Kit Commerce sells digital products and subscriptions at 3.5% + $0.30 per US transaction. ActiveCampaign does not process payments; it integrates with PayPal and Stripe on Plus and above. Coachful uses your own Stripe or Razorpay account with no platform fee.

Is ActiveCampaign HIPAA compliant?

ActiveCampaign lists HIPAA support on its Enterprise plan only. Kit does not list it. Coachful is not HIPAA-certified, so clinical records belong in a clinical system; check your obligations with an attorney if you handle health information.

What is Coachful's free white-glove service?

It is a build service included on every plan: you describe a website, funnel, program, email sequence or similar, attach references, and the Coachful team builds it in your account, usually within about 24 hours. It invents nothing and does not cover video recording, logo design or ad management.

Do I still need an email tool if I use Coachful?

Often not, because Coachful includes email lists, broadcasts and multi-step sequences with branching and A/B splits. If you rely on lead scoring, predictive sending or a Salesforce integration, you may keep ActiveCampaign alongside it.

Can I import my ActiveCampaign or Kit list into Coachful?

Yes. Both tools export contacts to CSV, and during onboarding your clients, programs and content are imported for you. Copy ActiveCampaign contact notes by hand first, since they are not included in its export.

Can I use Coachful at no cost forever, as with Kit's Newsletter plan?

No. Coachful has no permanent no-cost plan, but there is a free trial. If you only need a newsletter for a list under 10,000, Kit's free plan costs less.
