Buffer vs Later: Which Social Scheduler Suits Coaches?

Buffer vs Later: Which Social Scheduler Suits Coaches?

Buffer vs Later comes down to how you post. Buffer is the better pick for most coaches: it charges per channel, covers more networks (including X, Bluesky and Google Business Profile), has a usable free plan for up to 3 channels, and its trial does not need a card. Later is the better pick if Instagram is your main stage and you want a visual grid planner, Stories and carousels, and up to 8 profiles under one flat Starter price. Neither one books a session, takes a payment or delivers a program, which is why many coaches end up looking at a third option.

We make Coachful, a coaching platform with a built-in social planner, so read the Coachful parts with that in mind. Everything below about Buffer and Later comes from their own pricing pages and help centers as listed in October 2026, and from what public reviewers report. We have not run a hands-on test of either tool, and we say so where it matters.

What is the short answer, by use case?

Pick by the job you need done this month, not by the longest feature list. Here is the quick version for the coaches we hear from most.

  • You post to 2 or 3 networks and want to spend nothing: Buffer's Free plan. Three channels, ten queued posts per channel at a time, unlimited AI writing help.
  • Instagram is your shop window and you plan the grid visually: Later Starter. Auto-publishing for carousels and Stories, first comment, best time to post, and a bannerless Link in Bio.
  • You are on X, Bluesky, Mastodon or Google Business Profile: Buffer. Later ended X support on 28 August 2025 and does not support Bluesky or Google Business Profile.
  • You want to answer Instagram and Facebook DMs from a scheduler: Later Growth. Buffer's community inbox handles comments only.
  • You post to 6 or more networks on a tight budget: Later Starter, because one Social Set covers up to 8 profiles for one price, while Buffer adds a fee per channel.
  • Your posts exist to fill your calendar with clients: look at Coachful, where the post, the comment-to-DM automation, the booking page, the payment and the program live in one login.

If you are still choosing a platform for the whole practice, our Buffer alternatives for coaches and Later alternatives for coaches guides go wider than this head-to-head.

How do Buffer and Later compare side by side?

On paper they solve the same problem: write once, schedule, publish, measure. The differences are in how they bill, which networks they reach and what they do with the replies.

Ranked for coaches by: one login for the whole client journey, what happens between sessions, total monthly stack cost, and setup effort.

Public sentiment differs sharply. On Trustpilot in October 2026, Buffer held 4.2 from 146 reviews and Later 1.4 from 352 reviews. Trustpilot skews toward people with a complaint, often about billing, so treat it as a signal to read the trial terms closely rather than as a verdict on the scheduler itself.

How much do Buffer and Later cost?

Buffer charges per connected channel, so your bill grows with every network you add. Later charges per plan, and each plan includes a set number of Social Sets, where one Social Set is one profile on each supported network.

PlanMonthly billingYearly billingMain limits
CoachfulLite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clientsFlat monthly plans; one-click cancel on monthlyLower plans cap the number of clients; Pro is unlimited; social planner included in your Coachful membership

Buffer Essentials$6 per channel$5 per channel ($60 a year)1 user, unlimited scheduled posts (fair use 5,000 per channel), full analytics history
Buffer Team$12 per channel$10 per channel ($120 a year)Unlimited users, approval workflows, branded reports
Later Free$0$01 Social Set, 12 posts per profile per month, no carousels or Stories, no AI credits, no platform analytics
Later Starter$25$18.751 user, 1 Social Set (up to 8 profiles), 30 posts per profile per month, 5 AI credits
Later Growth$50$37.502 users, 2 Social Sets, 180 posts per profile per month, Social Inbox, 50 AI credits
Later Scale$110$82.504 users, 6 Social Sets, unlimited posts, 100 AI credits, competitor benchmarking

A few pricing details matter more than the headline numbers:

  • Buffer gets cheaper per channel at volume. On monthly billing, channels 11 to 25 cost $4 each on either paid plan, and the rate keeps falling after that. Most solo coaches never reach 11 channels, so expect the $6 or $5 rate.
  • Buffer's Start Page counts as a channel on paid plans. If you use it as your link in bio, add one channel to your count.
  • Buffer's yearly discount wording conflicts. The pricing cards say "save 2 months" and the FAQ says 20%. The per-channel prices above are what the cards show.
  • Later's monthly prices are not the default view. The pricing page opens on yearly billing labelled "3 months free | 25% off". The $25, $50 and $110 monthly figures come from the page's own monthly toggle. Later's help center mentions "4 months free" on annual plans, which does not match the pricing page.
  • Later's add-ons are for Growth and Scale only. An extra Social Set is $15 a month ($11.25 yearly), an extra user $5 ($3.75 yearly). Starter cannot add users or Social Sets.
  • Later's Free plan is real but hidden. It appears in the help center, not on the pricing page.
  • Nonprofits: Buffer gives 50% off paid plans; Later gives 50% off annual Growth.

What would a typical coach actually pay?

The same coach can pay more on either tool depending on how many networks they use. These are example scenarios built from the October 2026 list prices, not quotes.

ScenarioCoachfulBufferLater
Coachful: up to 15 clients, posting plus booking, payments and programsSolo: $49/month for up to 20 clientsScheduler only; booking, payments and programs need other toolsScheduler only; booking, payments and programs need other tools

You want DMs and comments in one inboxInstagram DM and comment automations; no unified inboxNot available (comments only)$50 / $37.50 on Growth

The pattern is simple. Under four channels, Buffer usually costs less. From about five channels up, Later Starter's flat price wins, as long as one user and 30 posts per profile per month is enough. Thirty posts a month is roughly one a day per network, which is plenty for most solo coaches.

For the full stack, add the tools a scheduler does not replace: a booking tool (see Calendly pricing), a link-in-bio store (see Stan Store pricing) and somewhere to host programs (see Kajabi pricing). That total, not the scheduler line, is the number to compare.

Which tool reaches the networks coaches use?

Buffer reaches more networks. If you write on LinkedIn and X, or want local search visibility through Google Business Profile, Buffer is the only one of the two that publishes there.

Buffer publishes to Instagram, Facebook Pages, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Pinterest, Google Business Profile, Bluesky, Mastodon and Substack. Instagram personal profiles and Facebook groups are reminder-only, meaning Buffer sends you a notification to post by hand. Coaches who run a free Facebook group as their community should know that.

Later publishes to Instagram, Facebook Pages, Threads, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube (Shorts only) and Snapchat. Later's help center states that X support ended on 28 August 2025. Bluesky and Google Business Profile are not supported.

For a business, executive or career coach who lives on LinkedIn and X, that settles it in Buffer's favor. For a fitness, wellness or mindset coach who lives on Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest, both reach your audience and the choice moves to planning and price.

Which is better for planning and publishing posts?

Later is the more visual planner for Instagram; Buffer is the faster queue for multi-network posting. Both publish automatically on paid plans.

Later's strengths

Later built its name on the visual Instagram planner: you drag posts into a grid preview and see how your profile will look before anything goes live. Starter adds auto-publishing for Instagram carousels and Stories, first-comment scheduling and a best-time-to-post suggestion. On the Free plan you cannot schedule carousels or Stories, and the calendar only shows two weeks back and forward, so the free tier is a taste rather than a working setup.

Buffer's strengths

Buffer is built around a queue and a visual calendar. You set posting slots per channel, drop posts in, and Buffer fills the slots. Essentials adds first-comment scheduling for Instagram and LinkedIn, a hashtag manager, channel groups, custom video covers and custom UTM parameters. The Free plan is a working setup for a light poster: ten scheduled posts per channel at any one time, and the slot frees up as soon as a post publishes.

Post limits

Buffer's paid plans have no practical post limit (a fair-use cap of 5,000 per channel). Later caps Starter at 30 posts per profile per month and Growth at 180; only Scale is unlimited. A coach who posts several Stories a day on Instagram can hit Later Starter's cap, so count your Stories before you choose.

How do the AI writing tools compare?

Buffer is more generous: its AI Assistant for writing and repurposing posts is unlimited on every plan, including Free. Later meters AI by credits: 0 on Free, 5 a month on Starter, 50 on Growth and 100 on Scale, and its AI Caption Writer and Ideas work in English only.

Five credits a month on Later Starter is enough to try the feature, not to lean on it. Later sells extra AI credits at $5 per 100 a month on monthly billing, though its pricing page and help center disagree on whether Starter can buy them.

Whichever you use, AI captions are a draft, not your voice. Clients hire a coach for a point of view, so edit every caption until it sounds like you on a call.

Which handles comments and DMs better?

Later, if you pay for Growth. Buffer, if you only need comments. Neither automates replies.

Buffer's community inbox collects comments so you can reply with AI suggestions (5 suggestions a week on Free, unlimited on Essentials). Direct messages are not part of it, and Buffer lists no DM or auto-reply automation.

Later's Social Inbox, from Growth up, covers Instagram and Facebook DMs plus Instagram, Facebook and TikTok comments. Later labels it beta and desktop only. Starter shows a preview, not the working inbox. Later documents no automated DM or comment-reply features.

For coaches this is the weakest part of both tools. The DM is where a follower becomes a discovery call, and neither Buffer nor Later can send a booking link when someone comments a keyword. You still copy and paste it by hand, then move the lead into your booking tool and CRM yourself.

How do analytics and reporting compare?

Buffer gives more history for less money; Later gives more depth at the top end.

Buffer Free keeps 30 days of Insights; Essentials and Team keep unlimited history, with a performance overview, custom analytics and reports. Paid plans export Insights as CSV, Markdown or PDF, and Team adds branded reports. Buffer has no direct export of scheduled posts, but every plan includes API access.

Later Free has no platform analytics, only three months of Link in Bio click data. Starter keeps three months of analytics across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, Threads and LinkedIn, with CSV export for Instagram, Facebook and Threads. Growth keeps one year and adds hashtag analytics and a shareable report. Scale keeps two years and adds competitor benchmarking for up to 20 Instagram competitors.

For a solo coach, the useful question is which posts lead to booked calls, and neither tool can see that, because neither one knows who booked. That attribution lives in your booking and payment system, which is the next section's point.

What does the client actually experience?

With Buffer or Later alone, a follower's experience ends at your link-in-bio page. Everything after that click (booking, paying, signing an agreement, joining a program) happens in other tools you connect yourself.

Buffer's Start Page is a simple link-in-bio page on every plan. Later's Link in Bio is customizable on every plan, removes Later branding from Starter up, and can collect email sign-ups to Mailchimp or a CSV. Later's version is the better lead capture page of the two because of that email field.

Then the handoffs begin. A typical coach stack built around either scheduler looks like this:

  1. A post goes out from Buffer or Later.
  2. A follower comments or DMs; you reply by hand with a link.
  3. They land on a link-in-bio page, then a booking tool.
  4. They pay through a payment link or invoicing tool.
  5. They get a contract by email from an e-signature tool.
  6. They log in to a course or community platform for the program.
  7. You track them in a spreadsheet or CRM.

Each step is another login for you and another place for a new client to drop off. That is not a flaw in Buffer or Later; they never claimed to do steps 3 to 7. It is the reason the third option below exists.

How do the free trials and free plans compare?

Buffer's trial is the safer one to start. Both offer 14 days of a paid plan, but they end differently.

  • Buffer: 14-day trial of Essentials or Team. If you do not add payment details, the account drops to the Free plan automatically and channels beyond three are locked. Nothing is charged by surprise.
  • Later: 14-day trial of any paid plan, card required at signup. The paid subscription starts automatically unless you cancel before day 14, and each account gets one trial.

If you try Later, put a reminder in your calendar for day 12. Given how many of Later's public reviews mention billing, that small step is worth it.

Which should you pick, by type of coach?

Match the tool to where your clients actually find you.

  • Business, executive and career coaches who publish on LinkedIn and X: Buffer. Later cannot post to X. Pair it with a real coaching platform for clients; see Coachful for business coaches.
  • Fitness, nutrition and wellness coaches who are Instagram and TikTok first: Later for the visual grid, Stories and carousels, or Buffer if you stay under four channels. See Coachful for fitness coaches for the training and check-in side.
  • Life and mindset coaches posting a few times a week to Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn: Buffer Free covers you at no cost. See Coachful for life coaches.
  • Coaches with a local studio or in-person practice: Buffer, because it posts to Google Business Profile.
  • Coaches with an assistant or VA: Buffer Team at under four channels (unlimited users), Later Growth if you also want the DM inbox.
  • New coaches still finding clients: pick the tool that turns a comment into a booked call, not the one with the prettiest grid. See Coachful for new coaches.

Is there a third option that beats both Buffer and Later?

For coaches whose posts exist to win clients, yes: Coachful. It is a coaching platform with a social planner and Instagram automations built in, so the post, the DM, the booking, the payment and the program sit in one login. For pure social media management across many networks, no: Buffer or Later is the better tool, and we explain exactly when below.

What Coachful is and who it is for

Coachful is a coaching platform. One subscription covers booking, payments, coaching agreements, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant, with one login for you and one branded app for your clients. It is built for coaches who deliver programs, not just sessions; for solo coaches growing into a small team; and for coaches replacing four to six separate tools. You can see how it fits together on our coaching software page.

How Coachful handles social posting

The social planner sits under Sell, then How you reach them, then Social planner. Built-in AI helps with post ideas and captions, then you schedule and publish to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Threads and YouTube from one calendar. Each network publishes separately, with a per-network retry and a notification if one fails.

The bigger difference is what happens after the post. Coachful's Instagram automations (under Manage, Your client experience, Automations, once your Instagram professional account is connected under Connections) trigger on a DM, a comment on a post (optionally only when it contains chosen keywords), a story reply, a mention, or a new follower where Meta supports it. The action can be a DM, a public reply to the comment, a DM with buttons or quick replies, or an AI-written reply (1 AI credit per reply).

In practice: you post a short video and ask people to comment "PLAN". Everyone who does gets a DM with your booking link, lead magnet or checkout, and they land in the same Coachful lead and client records you use for coaching. Neither Buffer nor Later documents anything like that.

Coachful's Prospects page with demo leads, the form or resource they came from, and their stage.

From there, the rest of the journey is in the same account:

  • Funnels and website: booking, application, lead-magnet and checkout funnels with Meta Pixel and UTM tracking, a link-in-bio page that sells, and a section-based website builder with 30 designed homepage templates, a blog and a custom domain.
  • Booking: booking pages with availability rules, buffers and time-zone detection, two-way Google, Apple and Outlook calendar sync, and built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links. More on our scheduling software page.
  • Payments: your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account, with one-time payments, subscriptions, payment plans and coupons. Coachful takes a 0% platform fee; you pay only Stripe or Razorpay processing.
  • Agreements: coaching agreements with e-signature, sent before the first call and stored on the client record.
  • Delivery: multi-week programs with weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, morning and evening check-ins and streaks, plus courses and a community, all in the client's branded app.
  • Email: lists, broadcasts and multi-step sequences with triggers, delays, branching and A/B splits.

When Coachful beats both

  • Your posts exist to book calls and sell programs, and you want comment-to-DM automation that sends the link for you.
  • You post mainly to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Threads and YouTube.
  • You are paying separately for a scheduler, a booking tool, a payment or invoicing tool, an e-signature tool and a course or community platform, and want one bill instead.
  • You want a lead from a comment to show up in the same record as their sessions, payments and check-ins.
  • You would rather someone else built your site or funnel for you (see the white-glove service below).

When Coachful does not beat them

  • You need TikTok, Pinterest, Bluesky, Mastodon, Snapchat or Google Business Profile publishing. Coachful does not publish to those. Buffer or Later does.
  • You want social analytics dashboards, competitor benchmarking or hashtag analytics. Coachful's social planner does not include analytics dashboards. Buffer Essentials or Later Growth is the tool for that.
  • You want a unified social inbox for comments and DMs across networks. Coachful has Instagram automations, not a unified inbox. Later Growth is closer.
  • You only need a free scheduler. Coachful has a free trial but no permanent free plan. Buffer Free is hard to beat at zero cost.
  • You manage social accounts for many brands. Buffer Team or Later Scale is built for that; Coachful is built around one coaching business.

Some coaches run two tools: Coachful for the practice and Instagram automations, plus a separate scheduler for a network it does not publish to. That is a reasonable setup.

What Coachful does not do

Coachful is not HIPAA-certified and does not sign a BAA, so clinical records and insurance billing belong in a clinical system. There is no PayPal and no permanent free plan. The client app ships under the Coachful listing with your branding, not under your own App Store account. There is no Salesforce or HubSpot integration, and no third-party plugins.

Why Coachful stands out

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. On every plan, you can ask the Coachful team to build something for you from Create, then "We'll build it for you · FREE". Describe what you want (a website, funnel, sales page, program, course outline, email sequence, link in bio, lead quiz or automation), attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files such as your logo, photos and existing copy, and the team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours. Nothing gets invented: no fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and gaps are left for you to fill. It does not include recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing.

What is the final verdict on Buffer vs Later?

Buffer wins for most coaches who only need a scheduler: wider network coverage, a working free plan, unlimited AI writing help, and a trial that cannot charge you by surprise. Later wins for Instagram-first coaches who plan a visual grid, post to six or more networks on one budget, or want a DM inbox and are willing to pay for Growth.

If what you really want is more booked calls and paying clients from your posts, neither scheduler finishes the job. That is where Coachful fits: posting, Instagram DM automation, booking, payments and program delivery in one login, with the free white-glove build to get you set up.

Frequently asked questions

Is Buffer or Later cheaper for a solo coach?

Under four channels, Buffer is usually cheaper: three channels cost $18 a month on monthly billing or $15 on yearly billing on Essentials, as listed in October 2026. From about five channels, Later Starter is cheaper at $25 monthly or $18.75 yearly for up to 8 profiles. Both have free plans if you post lightly.

Does Later still post to X (Twitter)?

No. Later's help center states that X support ended on 28 August 2025. Buffer still publishes to X, along with Bluesky, Mastodon and Google Business Profile, which Later also does not support.

Can Buffer or Later reply to Instagram DMs?

Later's Social Inbox handles Instagram and Facebook DMs on Growth and Scale, labelled beta and desktop only. Buffer's community inbox covers comments only. Neither documents automated DM or comment replies.

Which has the better free plan?

Buffer's. It covers up to 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, unlimited AI Assistant use and 30 days of analytics. Later's Free plan allows 12 posts per profile per month, with no carousels, no Stories scheduling, no AI credits and no platform analytics.

Do Buffer and Later trials charge automatically?

Buffer's 14-day trial drops to the Free plan if you add no payment details, so it does not charge you. Later's 14-day trial requires a card and starts the paid plan automatically unless you cancel before day 14.

Can either tool take bookings or payments for coaching?

No. Neither Buffer nor Later offers booking calendars, client records, payments, programs or courses. You would pair them with separate tools for those jobs, or use a coaching platform such as Coachful that includes them.

Does Coachful replace Buffer or Later?

For many coaches, yes: Coachful's social planner publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Threads and YouTube, and its Instagram automations can send your booking link when someone comments a keyword. It does not publish to TikTok or Pinterest and has no social analytics dashboards, so coaches who need those keep Buffer or Later alongside it.

What is Coachful's free white-glove service?

On every plan, you can ask the Coachful team to build a website, funnel, sales page, program, email sequence or similar inside your account at no extra cost, usually within about 24 hours. You attach references and files, and nothing is invented: gaps are left for you to fill. It does not include video recording, logo design or ad management.

Which is better for Instagram-focused coaches?

Later's visual grid planner, Stories and carousel publishing and email-capturing Link in Bio make it the stronger pure Instagram scheduler. If your Instagram goal is booked calls rather than a tidy grid, Coachful's comment-to-DM automations are the more direct route; see our AI coaching assistant page for what Michelle, Coachful's built-in AI assistant, can draft for you.
