Mental Health Coach Salary in 2026: Pay, Rates and Real Math

There is no official mental health coach salary figure. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track mental health coaches as an occupation, and no salary site we checked in November 2026 publishes a reliable national number for the exact title. The closest benchmarks put this work somewhere around $52,000 to $77,000 a year: that is the band for health and wellness coaching in our 2026 Coaching Business Report (drawing on Payscale, ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor), and it sits beside a BLS median of $59,350 (May 2025 data) for licensed mental health counselors, a related but different job.
Where you land depends mostly on one choice. Employed coaches at digital mental health companies, employer wellbeing programs and clinics earn a salary set by the employer, with benefits and a caseload you do not have to find. Independent coaches set their own rates, usually somewhere in the $75 to $200 an hour band the same report gives for health and wellness coaching, and keep what is left after costs and tax. Coachful is the platform many independent coaches use to run that practice: booking, payments, coaching agreements, programs with daily check-ins and a branded client app under one login. We make Coachful, so read the software parts with that in mind; the pay data below comes from outside sources and is labelled.
This page is the niche version of our broader life coach salary and health coach salary guides. It covers the scope line that shapes what mental health coaches can be paid for, the employers that hire them, the independent math at three practice sizes, real running costs, and a 12-month plan from first client to a full book.
How much does a mental health coach make in 2026?
Expect roughly $47,000 to $77,000 a year for an established full-time coach, with part-time and first-year coaches well below that and a small number of independent coaches well above it. None of these figures measures "mental health coach" directly, so read each one for what it actually counts.

| BLS: health education specialists and community health workers | See the BLS page | The closest federal category for non-clinical health roles. It does not mention coaching, so treat it as a neighbor, not a match. | November 2026 |
Two honest caveats. First, job boards file mental health coach roles under many titles (wellbeing coach, behavioral health coach, emotional health coach, mindset coach), so any single "average" for one title rests on a thin and shifting sample. Second, independent coaches rarely report their income to salary sites at all, which means the published bands lean toward employed roles. The career-stage figures in the same report show how wide the spread is across all coaching: under one year in practice, $20,000 to $30,000 a year; one to four years, $40,000 to $65,000; five to nine years, $65,000 to $100,000 (Payscale, ZipRecruiter, Salary.com and community estimates, via the report).

What can a mental health coach do, and why does that set the pay?
A mental health coach supports people who are functioning in daily life and want to build habits, resilience, stress management and follow-through. A coach does not diagnose, treat or manage a mental illness. That scope line caps what coaches are paid relative to licensed clinicians, and it also decides which employers can hire you and which clients you can safely take.
Licensed counselors, social workers and psychologists can assess and treat conditions, bill insurance and work with people in crisis. Their training takes years and their title is protected by state law. Coaches are paid less on average because the work is narrower, there is no license, and in the U.S. coaching is generally paid out of pocket or by an employer, not by insurance. In exchange, the barrier to entry is far lower, and an independent coach is free to price on outcomes and packages rather than on billing codes.
Refer out when a client mentions thoughts of suicide or self-harm, symptoms that stop them working or caring for themselves, signs of psychosis, an eating disorder, substance dependence, or trauma that keeps resurfacing in sessions. Put the referral process in your coaching agreement and your intake form before you take a single paying client. Our guide to mental-health warning signs in coaching walks through the wording and the handoff, and Is a mental health coach worth it? covers how clients should weigh coaching against therapy.
Where do mental health coaches work, and what does each path pay?
Mental health coaches work in two broad settings: employed roles inside organizations that need non-clinical support at scale, and independent practices where the coach finds and keeps their own clients. Employed roles trade upside for stability; independent practice trades stability for control of price and caseload.
Employed roles
- Digital mental health and behavioral health apps. Subscription and employer-paid apps hire coaches to run text, chat and video sessions with members, often on structured protocols. Expect a salary or hourly contract, a target caseload, scripted escalation rules and supervision by licensed clinicians.
- Employer wellbeing and employee assistance programs. Vendors that sell wellbeing benefits to companies employ coaches for stress, burnout and work-life sessions. Pay is usually salaried; some roles are part-time or contract.
- Clinics, health systems and health plans. Some clinics and insurers use coaches alongside therapists for care navigation, habit support and follow-up between clinical visits. These roles often ask for a related degree or a health and wellness coaching credential.
- Universities and colleges. Student wellbeing services hire coaches for academic stress, resilience and transition support, usually on campus pay scales.
- Peer support and recovery programs. Lived-experience roles overlap with mental health coaching but have their own certification paths and pay; see our recovery coach salary guide.
Employed pay is set by the employer's band, not by you, and job postings for these roles vary widely by state and employer. The upside is real: steady income, benefits, a supply of clients you never had to market to, and clinical colleagues to escalate to. The downside is a ceiling. An employed coach running back-to-back sessions on someone else's protocol rarely earns much above the bands in the table.
Independent practice
Independent coaches sell directly to individuals, and sometimes to small companies. They set their own price, choose their niche, and can add group programs and digital products on top of 1:1 work. Income starts lower and less predictable, and every cost from software to insurance is yours. The top of the range is higher than any employed band, but only for coaches who build steady lead flow and keep clients for months rather than weeks.
| Path | How pay is set | What it demands | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital mental health app | Salary or hourly contract from the employer | High session volume, protocols, documentation, escalation rules | New coaches who want caseload experience fast |
| Employer wellbeing program | Salary, sometimes part-time contract | Workplace topics, scheduled sessions, reporting to the vendor | Coaches with HR or corporate backgrounds |
| Clinic or health system | Salary on the organization's pay band | Related degree or credential, working inside a care team | Coaches with health or social work training |
| Independent 1:1 practice | Your own session or package rate | Marketing, sales, admin, insurance, tax | Coaches who want control of price and niche |
| Independent with group programs | Package price times cohort size | Program design, community, launch rhythm | Coaches whose 1:1 calendar is full |
Many coaches run both for a while: a part-time employed role for a floor, plus a small independent practice that grows until it can replace the salary. If you are still choosing a path, How to become a mental health coach covers training and scope, and How to start a mental health coaching business covers setup.
What do independent mental health coaches charge?
Our rates data has no figure specific to mental health coaching, so the nearest published band is health and wellness coaching: $75 to $200 an hour (Payscale and community estimates, via the 2026 Coaching Business Report). By career stage, the same report estimates $50 to $100 an hour for entry-level coaches, $100 to $200 for experienced coaches and $200 to $400 at the top end.
Rather than copy a number, set your price with three checks:
- Work back from the income you need. Take your target annual income, add yearly running costs and a tax reserve, and divide by the number of paid sessions you can realistically deliver. A coach who wants $60,000 after costs, expects $8,000 in costs and can deliver 15 sessions a week for 46 weeks needs about $99 a session before tax. Set aside tax on top; in the U.S., self-employment tax is 15.3% on net earnings, before income tax.
- Check it against the market band. If your number lands far above $200 an hour, you need either a specialist niche that supports a premium or a different mix (more clients, a group offer). If it lands below $75, you are probably underpricing.
- Sell packages, not single sessions. Mental health coaching outcomes take weeks. A 12-week package with weekly sessions and daily check-ins in between is easier for a client to commit to and far easier for you to forecast than one-off bookings. Our coaching packages page shows how packages are structured in practice.
Raise prices for new clients once your calendar is about 80% full or you have a waitlist. Existing clients usually keep their rate until their package renews.

How much can an independent mental health coach earn? The income math
An independent coach with 15 weekly clients at $125 a session grosses about $86,000 a year before costs and tax. The table below shows three illustrative practice sizes. These are examples to show how the math works, not typical results or a promise of earnings; most new coaches take a year or more to reach the middle row.
| Practice size (illustrative) | Active clients | Price per session | Weeks worked | Gross | Running costs (example) | Net before tax |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Side practice | 6, weekly sessions | $90 | 46 | $24,840 | $3,500 | $21,340 |
| Full-time 1:1 | 15, weekly sessions | $125 | 46 | $86,250 | $8,000 | $78,250 |
| 1:1 plus groups | 20 weekly, plus 2 cohorts of 12 at $600 | $150 | 46 | $152,400 | $15,000 | $137,400 |
Three things move these numbers more than the session price. Retention: a client who stays nine months is worth three times a client who leaves after twelve weeks, and you did not pay to find them again. Weeks worked: 46 allows for six weeks of holidays, illness and slow periods; plan for them. No-shows and gaps: weekly sessions assume clients are actually booked every week. Prepaid packages and a clear cancellation policy protect the gross figure.
Taxes come off the net column. In the U.S., if you expect to owe $1,000 or more, the IRS generally expects quarterly estimated payments. Rules differ by country and state, so check with an accountant before your first full year.
One more rule if you ever teach other coaches: in the U.S., the FTC has warned businesses, including business coaching, that misrepresenting typical earnings can lead to civil penalties. Present income examples the way this page does, as labelled illustrations.
What does it cost to run a mental health coaching practice?
A lean solo practice can run on a few thousand dollars a year: software, card processing, insurance, continuing education and some marketing. Costs rise with group programs, paid ads and supervision.
| Cost | What it covers | Example budget | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coachful | Booking, payments, agreements, programs, check-ins, courses, community, website, email, client app | Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients | Flat monthly plan; lower plans cap clients, Pro is unlimited |
| Card processing | Stripe or Razorpay fees on each payment | A percentage of revenue | Check your processor's published rate for your country |
| Professional liability insurance | Claims of errors or negligence in your services | Get two or three quotes | The SBA lists professional liability for service businesses |
| Training and continuing education | Coaching certification, renewals, skill courses | Varies widely by program | See our certification guide |
| Supervision or peer consultation | Case review, referral judgment, your own wellbeing | Example: $1,000 a year | Worth it in this niche even when not required |
| Marketing | Directory listings, workshops, paid social, design | Example: $1,000 to $5,000 a year | Content and referrals cost time rather than money |
| Accounting and legal | Bookkeeping, tax filing, agreement review | Example: $500 to $2,000 a year | Have a local lawyer review your agreement once |
The example amounts are illustrations for budgeting, not quotes. Software is the line that tends to creep: coaches who stitch together a scheduler, a payments tool, an e-signature service, a course host, a community app and an email tool often pay more for the pile than for one platform, and lose time copying client details between them. If you are comparing tools, Best software for mental health coaches covers the options side by side.
What raises a mental health coach's income?
Income rises when you charge more per client, keep each client longer, or serve more clients per hour of your time. Each lever below does at least one of those.
- Specialise. "Mental health coach" is broad. "Burnout coach for nurses", "anxiety-and-performance coach for founders" or "postpartum adjustment coach" tells a buyer exactly who you help and supports a higher rate. Keep the specialty inside coaching scope.
- Sell packages and renewals. A 12-week package followed by a lighter monthly maintenance offer keeps clients for months, which is where independent income compounds.
- Add group programs. A six- or eight-week cohort on stress or sleep habits lets one hour of your time serve ten or more people. Price each seat below your 1:1 rate and the total above it. Our group coaching software page shows how cohorts run.
- Win corporate contracts. Small and mid-sized companies without a large wellbeing vendor will pay for workshops, group series or a set number of 1:1 seats for their team. One contract can equal several individual clients.
- Build digital products. A self-paced course, a journaling program or a set of guided audio sessions sells without your time. Treat them as an extra, not your main income, until you have an audience.
- Improve retention. Clients who feel supported between sessions stay. Daily check-ins, habit tracking and quick replies matter more here than any marketing tactic.
Do credentials change a mental health coach's pay?
Credentials change which jobs you can get more than they change an independent coach's rate. Employers, especially clinics and health plans, often list a recognized coaching credential or a related degree as a requirement. Independent clients mostly buy on trust, specialty and results, and few ask which certificate you hold.
There is no license for mental health coaching. Common routes include health and wellness coaching programs approved by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching, ICF-accredited coach training with the ACC, PCC and MCC credentials, and shorter mental health coaching certificates from private schools. They differ a lot in hours, cost and recognition, so compare them in our mental health coach certification guide before you pay for one. A credential also gives you a clearer scope statement and referral training, which protects clients and protects you.
If you are working toward an ICF credential, you will need a log of coaching hours and distinct clients. Coachful counts both automatically and exports an ICF coaching log with paid and pro bono hours; see ICF hour tracking.

A 12-month plan from first client to a full practice
Most independent coaches need around a year to go from first paying client to a steady caseload. This plan assumes you already have training and a clear scope.
- Month 1: scope, agreement and offer. Write a one-sentence niche, your referral policy and a coaching agreement. Design one 12-week package. Get professional liability insurance and set up a business bank account.
- Month 2: practice setup. Publish a simple website with one call to action, a booking page with intake questions, and checkout. Write your welcome flow and daily check-ins.
- Month 3: first clients. Offer a small number of reduced-rate founding spots to people in your network, in exchange for honest feedback. Coach them through the full package.
- Months 4 to 5: proof and referrals. Ask finished clients for testimonials that describe their experience truthfully, and ask who else they know. Start one content channel you can keep up weekly.
- Month 6: full price. Move new clients to your full rate. Add a monthly maintenance offer for clients finishing the package. Target six to eight active clients.
- Months 7 to 8: first group. Run a small pilot cohort on the topic clients ask about most. Use it to test pricing and format.
- Months 9 to 10: one corporate pitch. Turn the cohort into a workshop or group series and offer it to two or three local employers or associations.
- Months 11 to 12: review and raise. Check retention, revenue per client and hours worked. Raise prices for new clients if you are near capacity, and plan next year's cohort calendar.
How does a mental health coaching practice run in Coachful?
Coachful is a coaching platform that puts booking, payments, coaching agreements, program delivery with daily check-ins and habits, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant into one subscription, with one login for you and one branded app for your clients. It is built for coaches who deliver programs, not only sessions, and for solo coaches replacing four to six separate tools.
What it does not do matters in this niche: Coachful is not HIPAA-certified and does not sign a BAA, so it is not the place for clinical records or insurance billing. If you also work as a licensed clinician, keep clinical notes in a clinical system. There is also no PayPal option and no permanent no-cost plan, and the client app runs under the Coachful listing with your branding.
Offers and packages
Each package becomes an offer with its price, what is included and a checkout. Payments go through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account as one-time payments, subscriptions or payment plans, with coupons, order bumps, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Coachful takes a 0% platform fee on client payments; you pay only Stripe or Razorpay processing.

Booking and agreements
Booking pages handle availability rules, buffers, minimum notice and time-zone detection, with two-way Google, Apple and Outlook calendar sync and built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links. Intake questions on the booking form are a natural place for your screening questions. A coaching agreement with e-signature goes out before the first call and is stored on the client record; see coaching contracts.

Between-session support
Programs run week by week with goals, daily tasks, habits, morning and evening check-ins, progress bars and streaks. This is where retention is won in mental health coaching: a client who logs a two-minute evening reflection and sees their streak is far more likely to keep going than one who only hears from you once a week. Each client record shows check-ins, habits, notes, intake answers, payments and sessions, with a status of thriving, active, quiet or at risk, so a client going quiet is visible before they cancel.
Here is how a program is built and delivered:

Groups, courses and the client app
When a client enrolls in a program, Coachful creates a cohort group automatically, with a community feed, group chat and video events. Courses with modules, drip and completion tracking sit in the same client home, so a self-paced resilience course can be sold on its own or bundled with coaching.

Getting paid and seeing the numbers
Every transaction gets an invoice, and you can send manual invoices too. The Analytics tab shows revenue, client activity and retention, which are the three numbers the income math above depends on.

Coachful's plans are flat monthly prices; lower plans cap the number of clients, Pro is unlimited, and team plans add coach seats (current plans: Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients). There is a free trial, and monthly plans cancel in one click. Mental health coaches can start from the pages for mindset coaches or health coaches.
Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, choose "We'll build it for you" and describe what you need: a website, a funnel, an offer page, a program, a course outline, an email sequence, an intake form and more. Attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files such as your logo, photos and existing copy. The Coachful team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours. Nothing is invented: no fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and gaps are left for you to fill. A menopause and midlife health coach starting from nothing, for example, got a five-page site in sage and cream where every button leads to a free 20-minute consultation. Read more about the free white-glove service.

To start: open a free trial, request a white-glove build of your website and first package, then invite your first clients into the app.
What mistakes keep mental health coaches underpaid?
- Blurring the scope line. Taking clients who need therapy creates risk and usually ends badly for both of you. A clear referral policy is part of a sustainable income, not a limit on it.
- Selling single sessions. One-off bookings make income unpredictable and outcomes unlikely. Packages fix both.
- Pricing from fear. Charging $40 an hour to fill a calendar fills it with clients who are least likely to commit. Work your price back from the income math.
- A niche nobody searches for. "Holistic transformation" is hard to buy. Name the person and the problem.
- Nothing between sessions. Clients who hear from you once a week drift. Check-ins and habits keep them engaged and renewing.
- Ignoring tax. Spending the gross figure and then meeting a self-employment tax bill sinks many first-year practices. Put aside a fixed share of every payment.
- Too many tools. Six subscriptions and copy-pasting between them cost money and the hours you could be coaching.
- Overpromising results. Testimonials and claims must be truthful and typical. Do not guarantee outcomes in mental health, and never in a way that sounds like treatment.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average mental health coach salary?
No official average exists for the exact title. The closest coaching band is health and wellness coaching at $52,000 to $77,000 a year (Payscale, ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor, via our 2026 Coaching Business Report). For context, licensed mental health counselors had a BLS median of $59,350 in May 2025 data, but that is a different, licensed occupation.
How much do mental health coaches charge per session?
The nearest published band, for health and wellness coaching, is $75 to $200 an hour. The same report estimates $50 to $100 for entry-level coaches and $200 to $400 at the top end. Set your own price by working back from your income target and costs.
Do mental health coaches make less than therapists?
Employed coaches usually earn less than licensed therapists, because therapists can diagnose, treat and bill insurance. Independent coaches with a strong niche, packages and group programs can out-earn an employed counselor, but that takes time and is far from typical.
Can a mental health coach work without a license?
Coaching itself is unlicensed, so you can work as a coach without a clinical license as long as you stay within coaching scope: no diagnosis, no treatment, no crisis care. Some states restrict titles such as "counselor" and "therapist", so check what you may call yourself where you live.
Who hires mental health coaches?
Digital mental health and behavioral health apps, employer wellbeing and employee assistance vendors, clinics and health plans, universities and peer support programs. Postings appear under many titles, including wellbeing coach and behavioral health coach.
Does certification increase a mental health coach's pay?
It mainly opens employed roles that require a credential. Independent clients rarely pay more for a specific certificate, though training improves your scope judgment and referral skills. Compare programs in our certification guide.
How many clients does a full-time mental health coach need?
In our illustrative math, about 15 weekly clients at $125 a session grosses around $86,000 a year. Higher prices or group programs lower that number; lower prices or short engagements raise it.
Is Coachful suitable for mental health coaches?
Yes, for coaching work: booking, payments, agreements, programs with daily check-ins and habits, groups and a branded client app. It is not HIPAA-certified and is not meant for clinical records or insurance billing, so licensed clinicians should keep clinical notes elsewhere.
What is Coachful's free white-glove service?
It is a build service included on every plan. You describe what you want, such as a website, funnel, program or email sequence, attach links and files, and the Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. It does not include video recording, logo design or ad management.
How long does it take to earn a full-time income as an independent mental health coach?
Plan for about a year from first paying client to a steady caseload, and longer if you are building part-time. Coaches who start with a part-time employed role often keep it until their practice reliably covers their costs and salary.
