Mailchimp Free Trial (2026): Length, Card Rules and Costs

Mailchimp Free Trial (2026): Length, Card Rules and Costs

The Mailchimp free trial lasts 14 days on the Essentials or Standard plan, and you must enter valid payment details when you enroll, as listed in October 2026. If you do nothing, the trial ends and Mailchimp starts charging the monthly rate for your contact tier: $13 for Essentials or $20 for Standard at up to 500 contacts. Premium has a separate 1-month trial through Sales for qualified new customers, and Mailchimp also keeps a Free plan for lists of up to 250 contacts.

So the trial is genuine, but it is opt-out rather than opt-in. For a coach, the bigger question is what you are trying out. Mailchimp is an email marketing platform with forms, landing pages and automation flows. It does not handle session booking, client records, coaching programs or payments for coaching, so those tools stay on your bill beside it. We make Coachful, a coaching platform where email sits in the same login as booking, payments, agreements and program delivery, so weigh our view accordingly. Every Mailchimp figure below comes from its pricing page and help center, as listed in October 2026.

How long is the Mailchimp free trial, and is a card required?

The trial is 14 days and payment details are required at enrollment. Mailchimp's own example: start on August 29 and the trial ends on September 12. The terms say "valid payment information must be provided at the time of enrollment," and Mailchimp accepts major credit cards, PayPal and, in select countries, direct debit.

Eligibility is narrower than the button suggests. You must be a new Mailchimp customer, or an existing Free plan customer whose account was created within the last 90 days, in select countries. You must also sign up through the "Start Free Trial" option. The terms we read do not list the countries, so check that the option appears for your account before you plan around it.

Here is how the published terms read in plain language.

TermWhat Mailchimp lists (October 2026)What it means for a coach
Length14 days from enrollment on Essentials or StandardTwo working weeks. Enough to import a list and test one sequence, but too short to judge results from a slow nurture series.

Premium1-month trial for qualified new customers, through SalesNot self-serve. Premium starts at $350 a month, which is more than most solo coaches need.
Not coveredTransactional email, SMS marketing, Website plans, Pay As You Go credits, Google adsThe trial covers the marketing plan only. Add-ons are billed from day one if you buy them.
Annual purchaseBuying an annual plan ends the trial immediatelyDo not switch to annual billing mid-trial if you still want the remaining free days.

If you are comparing this with other tools, our guide to coaching software with a free trial covers platforms built for client work, and what is actually free in coaching software sorts free plans from time-limited trials.

Build your platform

What happens when the Mailchimp free trial ends?

You are charged automatically at the current rate for the plan you chose, based on your contacts and email sends, and billing continues until you cancel or change plans. Mailchimp says it emails you before the trial expires, with reminders and upcoming billing estimates. Treat those as a backup, not as your plan.

Two details are easy to miss. First, the amount of your first bill can differ from the price you saw at signup. Mailchimp says that if your audience or email sends grow during the trial to the point where a different contact tier would be more economical, it may move you to that tier so you are in it when billing begins. Second, after the trial, Mailchimp bills overages automatically if you pass your contact or send limit. As long as you pay those overages on time, your campaigns keep going and the bill rises, rather than sending stopping.

Your exits are to cancel, to change to another paid plan, or to change to the Free plan. If you cancel during the trial, Mailchimp says you will not be charged for any services. You can pause your subscription or delete the account from the Settings tab in Account & Billing.

Upgrading or downgrading during the trial

You can change plans at any point in the trial. If you upgrade to Premium, Mailchimp says you pay the difference between the two plans for the remaining days. Downgrades take effect at the end of the monthly billing period, and previously billed charges are not refunded, though you keep the features until that period closes. If you started on Standard and decide Essentials is enough, make the change before day 14 and confirm it under Account & Billing.

What happens if you drop to the Free plan?

The Free plan does not include automation flows, email scheduling or SMS, and it allows one audience. The pricing page does not spell out what happens to flows you built during the trial, so assume they will not keep running. Sending is paused if you exceed 250 contacts or 500 sends per month, so Free has a hard stop where paid plans bill overages. Export anything you want to keep before you switch.

What does Mailchimp cost after the trial?

As listed in October 2026, Mailchimp costs $0 on Free, $13 a month on Essentials and $20 a month on Standard at up to 500 contacts, and $350 a month on Premium at 10,000 contacts. Prices rise with your contact tier, and taxes are extra.

PlanMonthly (USD)AnnualContacts and sendsSeats and audiences
Free$0Not applicableUp to 250 contacts; 500 sends a month, 250 a day1 seat, 1 audience
Essentials$13 at 0 to 500 contacts; rises by tier to 50,000No self-serve annual priceSends = 10x contact limit (5,000 at 500 contacts)3 seats, 3 audiences, 2 roles
Standard$20 at 0 to 500 contacts; rises by tier to 100,000Through Sales at 10,000+ contactsSends = 12x contact limit (6,000 at 500 contacts)5 seats, 5 audiences, 4 roles
Premium$350 at 10,000 contacts; rises by tierThrough SalesSends = 15x contact limit (150,000 at 10,000 contacts)Unlimited seats and audiences, 5 roles

Those are base-tier prices, read from the USD version of the page. Above the base tier, the number comes from the contact selector on the page, so enter your real list size there before you start a trial. Other currencies are shown as estimates at current exchange rates, and Mailchimp says to refer to USD for exact base pricing. Pay As You Go email credits exist as an alternative to a monthly plan. For a wider assessment of the product, read our Mailchimp review.

What does each Mailchimp plan add?

The useful line for coaches falls between Essentials and Standard: Essentials allows 4 steps per automation flow, while Standard allows 200. That decides which plan to try.

  • Free. Email campaigns, limited pre-built templates, popup and signup forms, landing pages, a website on a mailchimpsites.com address and 300+ integrations. Mailchimp branding stays on emails and forms, and email support lasts for the first 30 days only. No flows, no scheduling, no SMS.
  • Essentials. Automation flows of up to 4 steps, all pre-built templates, email scheduling, A/B testing, branding removal, 24/7 email and chat support and the SMS add-on.
  • Standard. Up to 200 flows with up to 200 steps each and branching, Intuit Assist generative AI at no extra cost (Mailchimp describes it as a beta for certain users in select countries, in English only), branded templates, dynamic content, custom reports, predictive segmentation, custom-coded templates and one onboarding session. It also makes you eligible for the Transactional Email add-on and MMS.
  • Premium. Everything in Standard plus phone and priority support, Enterprise SSO, a dedicated onboarding specialist for up to 4 sessions, multivariate testing and migration services through Sales.

A typical coach nurture sequence runs longer than four steps. A lead magnet delivery, a welcome, a story, a client example, an objection and an invitation to a call is already six emails, before you count the delays between them. If that is your plan, start the trial on Standard, because a trial on Essentials cannot show you the thing you need to test.

In fairness, this is real capability at the price. Landing pages are free to all Mailchimp users and can use your own domain. Standard's flow builder is deep, and A/B testing arrives on the first paid plan. If email is your whole marketing system, those are solid reasons to use it.

What fees and add-ons sit outside the trial?

Mailchimp states no transaction fees on its marketing plans, but several paid extras sit outside both the plan and the trial. The separate Websites and commerce pricing pages now redirect to the marketing pricing page, so any store transaction fees could not be verified, and we will not guess at them.

What does a coach actually pay at three sizes?

On Mailchimp's listed prices, a coach pays $0 at 200 contacts, $13 to $20 a month at 500 contacts and $350 a month on Premium at 10,000 contacts, plus every non-email tool beside it. The table below shows that, and it shows the other side of the comparison. Coachful prices by clients and Mailchimp by contacts, so these are different units, and it is worth checking both against your own numbers.

OptionSizeMonthly priceTools still needed beside it
Coachful5 clients, 15 clients or unlimited clientsLite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clientsNone for booking, agreements, program delivery, courses, community, website and email. You connect your own Stripe or Razorpay account and pay its processing.
Mailchimp FreeNew coach, 200 contacts$0Booking, checkout, agreements, client records, program delivery, a website on your own domain. No automation flows, so welcome emails go out by hand.
Mailchimp Essentials or StandardPractice with 500 contacts$13 or $20Booking, checkout, agreements, client records, program delivery, and a website if you want more than landing pages.
Mailchimp PremiumEstablished practice, 10,000 contacts$350 starting priceThe same list. Lower plans at this size are priced by the selector and may suit you better, since Premium's extras are mainly support, SSO and testing.

As simple arithmetic at the base tier, before tax, a year costs $156 on Essentials and $240 on Standard. Between 500 and 10,000 contacts the price rises by tier, and we did not record those amounts, so the selector is the place to read them. This is where most coaches actually sit, so it is worth five minutes before you enter your card.

The non-email tools are the harder part to see. A one-to-one coach on Mailchimp also needs somewhere to take bookings, somewhere to take money, somewhere to get agreements signed and somewhere to deliver a program. Prices for those vary too widely for us to give an honest single total. List the ones you already pay for, add the Mailchimp tier you need, and compare that one number. Our guide to free booking software is a good starting point if you want to keep the booking line at zero.

What are the hidden costs and gotchas?

The main traps are automatic billing, list size creeping up during the trial, and duplicate contacts inflating your tier. None of these is concealed, since they are all in Mailchimp's terms, but each is easy to overlook in a two-week window.

  • Importing your whole list changes your tier. If you import every old contact to see how it looks, Mailchimp may place you in a higher tier when billing begins. Clean the list first and import only people you would pay to email.
  • Duplicates across audiences count separately. A contact in more than one audience counts once per audience. Coaches who make one audience per offer pay for the same person repeatedly. Use one audience with tags or segments instead.
  • Add-ons sit outside the trial. SMS and Transactional Email are not part of it, so you cannot test them for free on the trial's terms.
  • The Essentials limit is easy to discover late. With 4 steps per flow, a real nurture sequence will not fit. Moving to Standard mid-trial is allowed, but plan for it from the start.
  • Free-plan support runs out. Email support on Free is for the first 30 days only, so if you drop back after a trial, expect to rely on the help center.
  • Free-plan accounts age out of eligibility. If you sit on the Free plan for more than 90 days, you no longer meet the published trial terms. A coach who plans to try paid features should do so early.
  • Annual billing is not self-serve. Annual plans exist only for Premium and for Standard at 10,000+ contacts, through Sales, so most coaches cannot get an annual discount.
  • Your own domain costs more on the website side. Landing pages can use your domain, but a full Mailchimp website on a custom domain needs a paid Websites plan, and the price is not shown on the current pricing page.

Public sentiment is worth a look too. Mailchimp's Trustpilot score was 2.5 from 1,555 reviews when seen on October 28, 2026. A single score says little on its own, so read a sample of reviews about billing and support before you enter your card.

If you leave, what do you take with you?

Mailchimp offers an account export as a ZIP file, one per 24 hours. Audiences come as CSV files split by status (subscribed, unsubscribed, cleaned), along with a campaigns CSV with HTML and text content, reports, templates and gallery files. Billing statements and deleted audiences are not included, so save those separately.

Keep the unsubscribed file. Under the US CAN-SPAM Act, commercial email needs a working opt-out and a valid postal address, and opt-outs have to be honored within 10 business days, according to the FTC's compliance guide. An opt-out does not expire because you changed tools. Rules differ elsewhere, so check with an attorney if you email people in other countries.

Which one looks like you?

Coachful builds your coaching website from a few answers, in a design chosen for your niche, with programs, booking and payments ready behind it.

Build your platform

How should a coach use the 14 days?

Decide what result would make you pay, then test only that. A trial with no question attached usually ends with a charge and no decision.

  1. Before you enroll. Enter your real list size in the contact selector and note the monthly price. Clean the list. Write down the trial end date, plus a reminder two days earlier.
  2. Days 1 to 2. Start on Standard if your nurture sequence runs past four steps. Import the cleaned list into one audience, using tags rather than extra audiences.
  3. Days 3 to 5. Build one signup form and one landing page for your lead magnet, on your own domain if you have one.
  4. Days 6 to 9. Build one real flow, from lead magnet delivery through to an invitation to a discovery call. Send it to yourself and a colleague, then turn it on.
  5. Days 10 to 12. Send one newsletter with an A/B test on the subject line. Look at the reports, and see how a booking link and an agreement would fit into the sequence outside Mailchimp.
  6. Day 13. Decide: stay on Standard, move to Essentials, move to Free, or leave. Check the billing estimate Mailchimp sends you. If leaving, export the account first, then cancel.

Two weeks will not tell you whether a nurture sequence converts into clients, because few people go from download to booked call that quickly. Judge the trial on whether you can build and run the sequence, not on sales from it.

Is Mailchimp worth paying for, by coach type?

It is worth paying for when email is the main thing you need. It is a poor fit when you are trying to run client delivery around it. Here is how that plays out.

  • New coach with a small list. Under 250 contacts, skip the trial for now, since Mailchimp itself points businesses of that size to the Free plan. The catch is that you get no automated welcome sequence. If you have clients to serve rather than a list to grow, look at Coachful for new coaches instead.
  • Newsletter-first coach or author. A good fit. Standard's flows, segmentation and A/B testing suit someone whose business runs on email, with booking handled by a simple separate tool. Also compare Kit against Mailchimp and Flodesk against Mailchimp.
  • One-to-one life or business coach. Mailchimp covers only the marketing end. Once a lead says yes, the booking, agreement, payment and follow-through happen elsewhere. Life coaches and business coaches in this position usually save more by consolidating than by finding a cheaper email tier.
  • Program or group coach. Outgrows it quickly. Mailchimp can announce a program, but it has no place for weekly goals, habits, check-ins or a cohort. Group coaching software does that work.
  • Health or fitness coach. Keep marketing email separate from anything clinical. Coaching is not medical care, so refer clients with medical concerns to a qualified clinician, and keep clinical records in a clinical system. Coachful is not HIPAA-certified either, so the same limit applies there. For workouts and nutrition delivery, see the Fitness & Nutrition pack and the page for health coaches.
  • Small coaching team. Essentials gives 3 seats and Standard 5, then the next step is Premium. If the need is really per-coach availability and staff permissions, look at Coachful for teams.

How does the Mailchimp trial compare with the alternatives?

Mailchimp is stricter on card rules than several rivals: Kit, Flodesk and ActiveCampaign list 14-day trials with no card needed, while Mailchimp requires payment details. Its entry price is low, but its tier covers 500 contacts while several competitors quote 1,000, so compare at your own list size.

Why do we recommend Coachful for most coaches instead?

Because most coaches do not have an email problem. They have a too-many-tools problem, and a better email trial does not fix that. Coachful is a coaching platform: one subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant, with one login for you and one branded app for your client.

Coachful's client overview on a laptop on a coaching studio table

It is built for coaches who deliver programs and not only sessions, for solo coaches growing into a small team, and for coaches replacing 4 to 6 tools. Current plans: Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients. Plans are flat and monthly, lower plans cap the number of clients, and monthly plans cancel in one click. On Trustpilot the company has 4.5 from 21 reviews, which is a small sample.

How does email work in Coachful?

Email lists, broadcasts and multi-step sequences with triggers, delays, branching and A/B splits are included in your Coachful membership. The difference from Mailchimp is what the email connects to. Your email runs beside your lead and client records, and each client's sessions, payments, agreement and notes sit on one record. Here is a short walkthrough of the email tools. For the broader case, read how to send client broadcasts without Mailchimp.

What replaces the tools beside Mailchimp?

Booking pages come with availability rules, buffers, minimum notice and two-way Google, Apple and Outlook calendar sync. Sessions run on built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links, with email reminders.

Payments run through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account, with one-time charges, subscriptions, payment plans, coupons and refunds. Coachful takes a 0% platform fee, so you pay only Stripe or Razorpay processing.

Then comes the part an email tool does not touch. Multi-week programs carry weekly goals, daily tasks, habits and morning and evening check-ins, delivered into your client's branded home and app. You see who is thriving, active, quiet or at risk, which is often more useful than an open rate.

What Coachful does not do

It is not HIPAA-certified and offers no BAA, so it is not for clinical record-keeping or insurance billing. There is no PayPal and no permanent free plan. The client app ships under the Coachful listing with your branding, not under your own App Store account. It has no Salesforce or HubSpot integration and no multi-stage sales deal board for large teams. It is also a weaker fit than Mailchimp if you are a pure newsletter publisher with no clients to serve, and if that is you, stay with an email tool.

How to start

Start with a free trial, then let the team do the setup. Clients, programs and content are imported for you during onboarding.

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create > We'll build it for you, you describe what you want built: a website, a funnel, a sales page, a program, an email sequence or a form, among others. You can attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files. The team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours. Nothing gets invented, so no fake credentials, testimonials or prices; gaps are left for you to fill. It does not include recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing. In one recent build, a business mentor for beauty professionals got a 12-week mentorship sales page, a free start-up-guide funnel and rewritten follow-up emails. In another, a leadership coach with a Squarespace renewal days away got one clean homepage with a repeated "talk with me" button. Details are in our white-glove service guide.

How can you save money on Mailchimp?

Clean your list, use one audience and pick the lowest plan that runs your sequence. Those three moves matter more than any discount, because price follows your contact tier.

  • Prune before you import. Remove old contacts you would not email again, so that you enter billing on the lowest tier you can.
  • Merge audiences. Use tags instead of one audience per offer, so nobody counts twice.
  • Stay on Free while it fits. Under 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, you do not need to pay, as long as you can live without flows and with Mailchimp branding.
  • Shorten flows to fit Essentials. If four steps is enough, Essentials saves $7 a month at the 500-contact tier compared with Standard.
  • Consider Pay As You Go credits. If you only email occasionally, credits are listed as an alternative to a monthly plan. Compare the cost at your own volume.
  • Check the discounts you may qualify for. Nonprofits get 15% off, and new customers with 10,000+ contacts get 15% off the first 12 months. The trial's terms say it cannot be combined with other Mailchimp offers, so pick one.
  • Watch your limits before a launch. Overages are billed automatically, so check your send allowance before a big campaign and move up a tier deliberately if it is cheaper.
  • Add up the whole stack. Saving a few dollars on an email tier matters little if you pay for four other tools. Our page on coaching software shows what one subscription can replace, and the plans page shows what it costs.

Mailchimp free trial FAQ

Does Mailchimp have a free trial?

Yes. As listed in October 2026, Essentials and Standard come with a 14-day free trial for new customers, or for Free accounts created within the last 90 days, in select countries. Premium has a 1-month trial for qualified new customers through Sales. Mailchimp also has a separate Free plan for up to 250 contacts.

Does the Mailchimp free trial require a credit card?

You must provide valid payment information at enrollment. Mailchimp accepts major credit cards, PayPal and, in select countries, direct debit. If you want to try Mailchimp without entering payment details, the Free plan is the route, though it has no automation flows.

Will I be charged automatically when the trial ends?

Yes. Once the trial period ends, you are charged the current rate for your plan, based on your contacts and sends, until you cancel or change plans. Mailchimp says it emails reminders with billing estimates before the trial ends. Set your own reminder as well.

How do I cancel the Mailchimp free trial?

Mailchimp says you can pause your subscription or delete your account from the Settings tab in Account & Billing, and that cancelling during the trial means no charge for services. You can also change to the Free plan. Export your account data first, since deleted audiences are not part of the export.

Can I use the trial more than once?

No. The offer is limited to one per Mailchimp account, and offers cannot be applied consecutively. A Free account older than 90 days also falls outside the eligibility terms. Time your trial for a period when you can actually use it.

Which plan should a coach choose for the trial?

Choose Standard if your nurture sequence has more than four steps, because Essentials caps each flow at 4 steps. Choose Essentials if you mainly send newsletters and a short welcome. You can change plans during the trial.

Does the trial include SMS or a website on my own domain?

No. The terms exclude add-on and one-time fees, including SMS marketing, Website plans, transactional email, Pay As You Go credits and Google ads. SMS also needs an approved application. A custom domain for a Mailchimp website needs a paid Websites plan, and its price is not shown on the current pricing page.

Can coaches run their whole business on Mailchimp after the trial?

Not on its own. Mailchimp covers email, forms, landing pages and a basic website, but not session booking, client records, coaching programs or payments for coaching. Those need separate tools connected through its 300+ integrations. Coachful puts them in one login, included in your Coachful membership.

Does Coachful have a free trial?

Yes, there is a free trial, though there is no permanent free plan. You can see the current plans on the plans page. Coaches who would rather not set everything up themselves can use the white-glove service.

What is Coachful's white-glove service?

It is a free build service on every plan. You describe what you want (a website, funnel, program, email sequence or something else) and the Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. It leaves gaps for you to fill rather than inventing credentials, testimonials or prices. Recording videos, logo design, ad management and ongoing marketing are not included.
