Mailchimp Review 2026: Is It the Right Fit for Coaches?

Mailchimp Review 2026: Is It the Right Fit for Coaches?

This Mailchimp review comes to a plain answer: Mailchimp is a capable email marketing tool, and a poor fit as the system that runs a coaching practice. If you want newsletters, signup forms and automated nurture emails, it does that job, and the Standard plan is the one most coaches would actually need. If you want booking, contracts, client records, programs and payments, none of that is in the plans it sells, and you will be connecting other tools from day one.

We make Coachful, a coaching platform that competes for part of this budget, so weigh our view accordingly. Everything we say about Mailchimp comes from what the company documents on its pricing and help pages as listed in October 2026, and from what public reviewers report. We have not run a hands-on test, and we say so wherever a term is not published.

What is Mailchimp, and what is it not?

Mailchimp is an email marketing platform. It sends newsletters, collects subscribers through signup and popup forms, publishes landing pages, runs automation flows, and offers a basic website builder. Automation flows are the feature formerly called Customer Journey Builder, renamed in June 2025, so older tutorials may use the old name.

What it is not matters more for a coach. Mailchimp's documented plans do not handle session booking, client records, coaching programs or payments for coaching. Those need separate tools, connected through its 300+ integrations. That is a reasonable design for a marketing product, and it explains most of the frustration coaches feel later: the tool is doing what it was built to do, while the practice needs more than that.

So the useful question is not whether Mailchimp is good. It is whether the job you are hiring it for is email, or the whole client journey. If you are still sorting out the wider stack, our overview of coaching software lays out the categories, and the comparison hub covers specific pairings.

What does Mailchimp do for coaches, job by job?

Mailchimp covers the marketing job well and stops there. Selling, delivery and client experience sit mostly outside the plans. Here is the honest breakdown across the five jobs a coaching business has to do.

Thinking of launching your coaching business?

Answer a few questions and Coachful builds it around you: your website, programs, booking and payments. Ready in minutes.

Build your platform

Marketing: where Mailchimp earns its place

This is the real product. You build a campaign from templates, send it to an audience, and read the reports. On the Free plan you get limited pre-built templates, popup and signup forms, and landing pages. Essentials opens all pre-built templates, email scheduling, A/B testing and removal of Mailchimp's branding. Standard adds branded templates, dynamic content, custom reports, predictive segmentation, the ability to send custom-coded templates, and generative AI (Intuit Assist) at no extra cost.

Landing pages are a fair highlight. Mailchimp describes them as free to all users, and they can use your own domain. A coach running a single lead magnet can publish a page, collect emails and send a follow-up without paying for a separate page builder, although the follow-up automation itself requires a paid plan.

Automation flows are where the plan you choose matters most. The Free plan has none. Essentials allows flows of up to 4 steps. Standard allows up to 200 flows with up to 200 steps each, plus branching. A welcome sequence of a delivery email, a story, a case for your method, and an invitation to book a call uses all four steps on Essentials, with no room to branch on who clicked. If email nurture is why you are buying, plan on Standard.

Selling: mostly somewhere else

The marketing pricing page does not cover selling, checkout or which payment processors work for a store. Mailchimp's separate Websites and commerce pricing URLs now redirect to that same marketing page, so any store transaction fees could not be verified in October 2026, and we will not guess at them. If selling through Mailchimp matters to you, get the fee in writing before you build on it.

In practice, a coach using Mailchimp usually takes payment elsewhere and uses email to send people there. That works. It also means the record of who paid sits in a different system from the record of who opened your emails, unless you connect the two.

Delivery: not in the product

Nothing in the plan documentation covers multi-week programs, daily tasks, habits, check-ins or course delivery. You can email a client a weekly prompt through an automation flow, and some coaches do. Email is a reasonable reminder channel, and a weak place to run a program, because there is no record of whether the client did the work unless they reply to tell you.

Client experience: an inbox, not a home

From the client's side, Mailchimp is a series of emails. There is no login where a client sees sessions, documents and progress in one place. For a coach selling a one-off workshop that is fine. For a coach selling a six-month engagement, clients end up searching their inbox for the last worksheet and the next call link.

Admin: decent account tools, nothing for sessions

Seats and roles grow with the plan: 1 seat on Free, 3 seats and 2 roles on Essentials, 5 seats and 4 roles on Standard, unlimited seats with 5 roles on Premium. Data export is genuinely good. You can export the account as a ZIP file once per 24 hours, with audiences as CSV files split by status, campaign content, reports, templates and more, though billing statements and deleted audiences are not included. Leaving is not hard, which counts for a lot in a software decision.

Booking is the visible gap. Your scheduling tool has to pass new clients into your audience through an integration, and you maintain that connection yourself. Our guide to client broadcasts without Mailchimp covers the case where the people you email are mostly existing clients.

How much does Mailchimp cost in 2026?

Mailchimp starts at $0 and has paid plans from $13 per month at the 0 to 500 contact tier, as listed in October 2026. The price then rises with your contact count. The figures below are base-tier prices read from the USD pricing page. Prices above the base tier are calculated by a script on the page and were not captured, so use Mailchimp's selector for your exact list size.

Mailchimp Essentials$130 to 500, tiers up to 50,00010x contact limit (5,000 at 500)Up to 4 steps per flow
Mailchimp Standard$200 to 500, tiers up to 100,00012x contact limit (6,000 at 500)Up to 200 flows, 200 steps each, branching

Mailchimp's pricing page in October 2026.

Some terms are easy to miss on the first read:

  • Each audience counts separately. A contact in more than one audience counts once per audience, so splitting prospects and clients into two audiences can raise your bill.
  • Going over costs differently by plan. On Free, sending is paused if you exceed a limit. On paid plans, overages are billed.
  • The trial needs a card. New customers in select countries get 14 days on Essentials or Standard, with payment details required at enrollment. Free accounts created within the last 90 days can qualify too.
  • No self-serve annual price. Annual plans are available for Premium and for Standard at 10,000+ contacts through sales. The rest is monthly.
  • Discounts exist. Nonprofits get 15% off. New customers on larger lists can get 15% off the first 12 months; the plan data lists this at 10,000+ contacts while the October pricing page banner reads 5,000+, so confirm it at checkout.
  • Support shrinks on Free. Email support lasts for the first 30 days only. Essentials adds 24/7 email and chat, and Premium adds phone and priority support.

Add-ons sit on top. SMS and MMS marketing come as monthly credit blocks on paid plans after an approved application, in select countries, with MMS on Standard and Premium for US and Canada contacts. Transactional Email (formerly Mandrill) costs $20 per block of 25,000 emails for 1 to 20 blocks, on Standard and Premium only. A custom domain on the website builder needs a paid Websites plan whose price is not shown on the current pricing page. Pay As You Go email credits are another route if you send rarely.

One gap in the published numbers deserves a mention. Page code lists maximums of 50,000 contacts for Essentials, 100,000 for Standard and 1,500,000 for Premium, while the help center says Premium stores up to 200,000 before a custom plan. Few coaches will reach that, but it is a reminder that the page and the help center do not always agree. Taxes are extra, and non-USD prices are estimates at current exchange rates.

What does a coach actually pay for Mailchimp plus the rest?

The Mailchimp line is rarely the whole cost, because it covers one job out of five. The more honest way to budget is to list each job and write down who does it.

As an example, take a coach with a 500-person list who wants a nurture sequence. Standard at $20 per month is the realistic plan, since Essentials stops at 4 steps. That buys email. The same coach still needs a booking tool, a payment processor, a contract and signature tool, somewhere to host program content, and possibly a community. Each has its own subscription, login and integration to maintain. We have not put a total on this, because the answer depends on which tools you choose. Write your own quotes into the five lines and compare that total with a single plan (Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients).

There is a time cost too. A new client who books, pays, signs and starts a program in four separate tools creates four places where a step can fail silently. Someone has to notice. If you are a solo coach, that someone is you.

What do public reviewers praise and complain about?

Public reviews are sharply split, and the negative side dominates. On Trustpilot, Mailchimp held a TrustScore of 2.5 from 1,557 reviews on October 31, 2026, with 66% one-star and 20% five-star ratings. Review sites can attract people with a problem to report, so read this as a map of what can go wrong, not a measure of how often it does.

What reviewers praise. The positive themes are consistent: strong email deliverability, easy setup and an intuitive interface. A few reviewers say live chat solved their problem quickly and name individual support agents who helped.

What reviewers complain about. Customer support is the most common complaint, with reviewers describing long waits, unhelpful answers, and chats closed or escalated without a resolution. Others report account lockouts or suspended sending that lasted days or weeks, unexpected charges and refused refunds, campaigns or imports flagged by compliance, and costs that climb compared with alternatives. One reviewer could not find how to delete their account.

Three recent reviews capture the pattern:

"Mail Chimp has excellent deliverability but is let down by their abysmal customer service." (1 star, October 29, 2026)
"It rapidly gets very expensive compared to other similar options." (2 stars, October 25, 2026)
"Mailchimp can switch off your sending at any time, including just before a weekend" (1 star, October 5, 2026)

For a coach, the suspension complaint is the one to plan around. If a launch or cohort start depends on an email going out on Monday, a compliance flag on Friday is a real business risk. Sensible protection is simple: only import people who opted in, warm up a large imported list gradually, and keep a current export of your audience. You should also know the basic rules for commercial email. The US Federal Trade Commission's CAN-SPAM compliance guide sets out the requirements, including a working opt-out and a valid postal address, and rules differ in other countries.

What are the pros and cons of Mailchimp for coaches?

The pros are real and mostly concern email. The cons appear once your business depends on more than email.

Who is Mailchimp best for, and who should look elsewhere?

Mailchimp is best for coaches whose main need is a list and a reliable newsletter, and who already have a working setup for everything else. A few specific cases where it makes sense:

  • You are testing an idea with a small list. Under 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, the Free plan costs nothing, as long as you accept the branding and go without automation.
  • You run a content-led business. If you mainly publish a newsletter and sell a few workshops through a tool you already like, email is the whole need.
  • You work with a marketer. Dynamic content, predictive segmentation, custom-coded templates and multivariate testing on higher plans are useful to someone who knows how to use them.
  • Your organization has already standardized on it. Inside a larger firm with an existing list and integrations, switching may simply not be worth it.

Look elsewhere if any of these sound familiar:

  • Most people on your list are clients. You want to message them with context: what they are enrolled in, how they are doing, what comes next.
  • You deliver programs. Weekly goals, habits and check-ins need a place to live that is not an inbox.
  • You pay for 4 or more tools and spend real time keeping them connected.
  • You are starting from nothing and do not want to assemble a stack before your first client. Our page for new coaches covers that path.

How does Coachful compare as the alternative for coaches?

Coachful is our recommendation for coaches who deliver programs, because it replaces the email tool and the other tools around it with one login. It is not a better email marketing specialist. It is a different purchase: email sits inside a platform that also runs the coaching.

Which one looks like you?

Coachful builds your coaching website from a few answers, in a design chosen for your niche, with programs, booking and payments ready behind it.

Build your platform

Coachful is a coaching platform built for coaches who deliver programs, not just sessions, for solo coaches growing into a small team, and for coaches replacing 4 to 6 tools. One subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant, with one login for the coach and one branded app for the client.

Email. You get email lists, broadcasts and multi-step sequences with triggers, delays, branching and A/B splits. The difference from a standalone tool is that the sender and the client record live in the same place.

This walkthrough shows how email works inside Coachful:

Website and funnels. A section-based website builder includes a blog, custom domain, SEO settings and 30 designed homepage templates. Booking, application, lead-magnet and checkout funnels come with pixels and UTM tracking.

Booking and payments. Booking pages include availability rules, buffers, time-zone detection and two-way Google, Apple and Outlook calendar sync. Payments run through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account, covering one-time charges, subscriptions, payment plans, coupons and refunds. There is a 0% Coachful platform fee, so you pay only Stripe or Razorpay processing. Coaching agreements go out with e-signature before the first call and are stored on the client record.

Delivery and client experience. Multi-week programs carry weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, morning and evening check-ins, goals with progress bars, and streaks. Courses, downloads and community are delivered into the client's branded home and app, and cohort groups are created automatically on program enrollment. See group coaching software if you run cohorts.

Client records and AI. Each client record holds goals, check-ins, habits, notes, intake answers, tags, payments and sessions, with a status of thriving, active, quiet or at risk. Michelle, the built-in AI assistant, works from live practice data, drafting emails and content, building programs, summarizing recorded sessions and briefing you before sessions. Questions and planning are included in your Coachful membership, while confirmed builds and changes use AI credits.

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, choose "We'll build it for you" and describe what you want: a website, funnel, program, course outline, email sequence, form and more. You can attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files, and the Coachful team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours. Nothing gets invented, so there are no fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and gaps are left for you to fill. It does not include recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing. A leadership coach with a Squarespace renewal days away, for example, got one clean homepage with a repeated "talk with me" button. Read more about the white-glove service.

Coachful Create page with the We will build it for you card
The Create page in Coachful, with the card that starts a white-glove build request.

What Coachful does not do. It is not HIPAA-certified and offers no BAA, so it is not for clinical record-keeping or insurance billing. There is no PayPal and no permanent free plan. The client app ships under the Coachful listing with your branding, not under your own App Store account. There is no Salesforce or HubSpot integration, no multi-stage sales deal board for large teams, and it is not a general website builder for non-coaching sites. If you need a deep marketing suite with predictive segmentation and multivariate testing, a specialist email tool may serve you better.

How to start. Begin with a free trial, then request a white-glove build for the piece you most want done first. Clients, programs and content are imported for you during onboarding. Monthly plans cancel in one click. Current plans: Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients.

What are the best Mailchimp alternatives for coaches?

The best alternative depends on whether you want a better email tool or a broader system. We ranked on one login for the whole client journey, between-session delivery, total stack cost, and setup effort. Our full list is in Mailchimp alternatives for coaches. All vendor figures below are as listed in October 2026.

MailerLite

MailerLite is the closest like-for-like swap, and it adds something Mailchimp's plans lack: built-in bookings for 1:1 and group sessions, free or paid via Stripe, with Google Calendar and Outlook sync. Its Free plan allows 250 active subscribers and 2,500 emails a month, with 3 automations. Comfort starts at $12 per month for 500 subscribers, and MailerLite states 0% commissions on digital products and bookings. See Mailchimp vs MailerLite. Pick it over Coachful if you want a low-cost email tool with light booking and do not deliver structured programs.

Kit (formerly ConvertKit)

Kit's Free Newsletter plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers, and paid automation starts with Creator at $39 per month for up to 1,000 subscribers. It sells digital products, with Kit Commerce charging 3.5% + $0.30 per USD transaction. It has no scheduling, client records or session management. See ConvertKit vs Mailchimp. Pick it over Coachful if your business is a newsletter first and coaching second.

Flodesk

Flodesk leads on design. Its Lite plan is $25 per month, or $19 billed annually, with a base price up to 1,000 subscribers, and its Free plan cannot send email. Checkout works only in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Euro Area countries. See Flodesk vs Mailchimp. Pick it over Coachful if beautiful email is your main marketing channel and your clients are handled elsewhere.

Systeme.io

Systeme.io is the budget all-in-one for marketing: funnels, email, courses, community and a blog, with 0% transaction fees even on its Free plan of 2,000 contacts. Startup is $17 per month. Its profile notes no native 1:1 scheduling with client records, habits or check-ins, though that part of the profile is older, so check it. Read our Systeme.io review and Mailchimp vs Systeme.io. Pick it over Coachful if you sell funnels and courses on a tight budget and do not need client delivery.

ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is for coaches who want more automation depth. Starter is $19 per month, or $15 billed annually, for 1,000 contacts, though it caps each automation at 5 actions and has no landing pages. There is no built-in booking or checkout, and deal pipelines need a paid add-on on Plus. Its Trustpilot heading shows 2.7, close to Mailchimp's score. See ActiveCampaign vs Mailchimp. Pick it over Coachful if complex email logic is the core of how you sell.

Kajabi

Kajabi sells knowledge products through courses, communities, websites, funnels and email. Basic is $179 per month, or $143 billed annually, with 5 products and 2,500 contacts. It has no habit tracking or daily client check-ins, and coaching is handled as products and communities, not per-client plans. See Kajabi vs Mailchimp. Pick it over Coachful if a course catalog is your main business and one-to-one coaching is secondary.

How hard is it to move from Mailchimp to something else?

Moving your data out of Mailchimp is the easy part, because the account export is well documented. The ZIP includes audiences as CSV files split by status (subscribed, unsubscribed and cleaned), a campaigns CSV with HTML and text content, reports, templates and gallery files. You can run one export per 24 hours.

A sensible order for the move:

  1. Export the account and keep the unsubscribed and cleaned files. Do not email those people again from the new tool.
  2. Rebuild your welcome sequence first, using the campaign content from your export. Trim it while you are there.
  3. Replace signup forms and landing pages, then update links in your bio, site and email signature.
  4. Send to your most engaged segment first, and widen gradually over a few sends.
  5. Cancel only after the new setup has been sending for a few weeks. Billing statements are not in the export, so download what your accountant needs first.

If you are moving to Coachful, clients, programs and content are imported for you during onboarding. Coachful also exports full client data as a ZIP, so the same exit stays open later.

What is our verdict on Mailchimp for coaches?

Mailchimp is a fair email tool and a partial answer for a coaching business. It deserves credit for a working free tier, serious automation on Standard, broad integrations and a clean export. It also carries a 2.5 Trustpilot score, with repeated complaints about support, lockouts and billing that you should weigh before a launch depends on it.

Choose Mailchimp if email is genuinely the only job, your list is small or your marketing is sophisticated, and your other tools already work. Budget for Standard if you need real sequences, and keep audiences merged to avoid counting contacts twice.

Choose Coachful if you deliver programs and want booking, payments, contracts, delivery, website and email in one login, with a white-glove build to get set up. That is the choice we recommend for most working coaches, and it is why we built it. Our reviews page is a good next stop, then see the plan that matches your client count: Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mailchimp good for coaches?

Mailchimp is good for the email part of a coaching business: newsletters, forms and automated sequences. It does not handle session booking, client records, programs or coaching payments, so you need other tools for those. It suits coaches with a simple offer or an established stack better than those delivering structured programs.

Is Mailchimp still free in 2026?

Yes, as listed in October 2026. The Free plan covers up to 250 contacts and 500 sends per month, capped at 250 per day, with one seat and one audience. It has no automation flows or email scheduling, keeps Mailchimp's branding, and pauses sending if you exceed a limit.

Which Mailchimp plan should a coach choose?

Standard is the realistic choice for most coaches who want a nurture sequence, at $20 per month for up to 500 contacts. Essentials at $13 limits each flow to 4 steps. Premium starts at $350 for 10,000 contacts and mainly suits larger teams and lists.

Why is Mailchimp's Trustpilot rating so low?

Reviewers most often complain about customer support, account lockouts or suspended sending, and billing disputes. The score was 2.5 from 1,557 reviews on October 31, 2026. Reviewers also praise deliverability and ease of use, and review sites can attract people with a problem to report.

Does Mailchimp handle booking and payments for coaching?

Not within what its marketing plans document. Session booking and payments for coaching need separate tools connected through its 300+ integrations. Selling and checkout details are not covered on its current marketing pricing page, so confirm any store fees directly.

Does Mailchimp have a free trial?

New customers in select countries get 14 days on Essentials or Standard, and Free accounts created within the last 90 days can also qualify. Payment details are required at enrollment. Premium has a 1-month trial for qualified new customers through sales.

Can I export my list if I leave Mailchimp?

Yes. The account export arrives as a ZIP file, available once per 24 hours, with audiences as CSV files split by status, plus campaigns, reports and templates. Billing statements and deleted audiences are not included, so save those records separately.

Can Coachful replace Mailchimp?

For most coaches, yes, on the email jobs they actually use: lists, broadcasts and multi-step sequences with triggers, delays, branching and A/B splits. It also covers booking, payments, contracts, programs and a website in one login. If you rely on predictive segmentation, multivariate testing or a Salesforce or HubSpot connection, keep a specialist tool.

What is Coachful's white-glove service?

It is a free build service on every plan. You describe what you want, such as a website, funnel, program or email sequence, and attach references, and the Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. It does not include recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing.

Is Coachful suitable for health coaches with clinical data?

Coachful is not HIPAA-certified and offers no BAA, so clinical records belong in a clinical system. Coaching is not medical treatment, and clients with medical concerns should be referred to a qualified clinician. For non-clinical coaching work, see our page for health coaches.
