ActiveCampaign Review 2026: Is It Right for Coaches?

ActiveCampaign Review 2026: Is It Right for Coaches?

This ActiveCampaign review comes down to one sentence: it is a strong email automation tool with a contact CRM, and it is not a coaching platform. If your main problem is sending the right email to the right person, it earns its price. If your problem is booking, charging, delivering a program and keeping clients engaged between sessions, you will still need several other tools around it.

The verdict in short

  • Who it suits: coaches with a sizeable list, several offers and the patience to build detailed email automations, especially those who already have their booking, payments and delivery sorted elsewhere.
  • Who should skip it: new coaches, coaches who sell programs rather than newsletters, and anyone hoping one subscription will replace their scheduler, checkout, contracts and client portal.
  • Public rating: Trustpilot showed 2.7 from 1,452 reviews when we checked on 28 October 2026, while the star image on the same page described it as 2.5.
  • Price: from $15 per month billed yearly, or $19 billed monthly, for 1,000 contacts on Starter, as listed in October 2026. Most coaches need Plus or higher, which starts at $49 billed yearly or $59 billed monthly.

We make Coachful, a coaching platform that competes with part of what ActiveCampaign does, so read this with that in mind. We have not run a test account for this article. Every ActiveCampaign fact below comes from what the company documents on its pricing page, pricing catalog and help center, or from what public reviewers report. We also say plainly where ActiveCampaign is the better choice.

What is ActiveCampaign?

ActiveCampaign is an email marketing automation platform with a contact CRM attached. You collect contacts through forms, tag and score them, and build multi-step automations that decide what each person receives next.

Its plans start with email automation on Starter, then add landing pages, site messages, payment and scheduling integrations on Plus. Pro adds predictive sending, conditional content, advanced segmentation and attribution. Enterprise adds single sign-on, HIPAA support, custom objects and Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics integrations.

The product is built for marketing and sales teams across many industries. It does not model a coaching relationship. There is no course hosting, client portal, client app, coaching program, habit tracking or check-in, so a coach using it is buying the marketing layer of the business, not the delivery layer.

What does ActiveCampaign do for each job in a coaching business?

It covers marketing very well, selling partly, and delivery and client experience not at all. This table sets it against a coaching platform for the five jobs a coach has to get done.

Thinking of launching your coaching business?

Answer a few questions and Coachful builds it around you: your website, programs, booking and payments. Ready in minutes.

Build your platform

Marketing: where it earns its reputation

This is the strongest part of the product. Every plan includes multi-step marketing automation, AI-powered automation and campaign builders, more than 250 email templates, more than 950 automation recipes and 500 AI credits, as listed in October 2026. For a coach, a recipe library means you can start from a working welcome series or re-engagement sequence and adapt it.

The catch is how much of this sits above Starter. Starter caps each automation at 5 actions and offers only standard and inline forms, with no landing pages. Plus removes the action cap and adds landing pages, site messages, custom-branded forms and Facebook, Google and LinkedIn ads integrations. The most interesting targeting, such as predictive sending, conditional content and advanced segmentation, starts on Pro.

Honest note: if you enjoy building branching logic, this is a real strength. If you have a list of 300 people and two offers, you will pay for depth you may not use for a long time. Our ActiveCampaign vs Mailchimp comparison and MailerLite vs ActiveCampaign comparison go further on this trade-off.

Selling: useful signals, but no till and no calendar

ActiveCampaign does not take payments or host bookings. Plus and above integrate with Calendly, Acuity Scheduling and Eventbrite, and with PayPal and Stripe, so that bookings and purchases can feed automations. The processors charge their own fees, and ActiveCampaign lists no payment-processing fee of its own.

That means a sale still happens elsewhere. You need a scheduler (see our Calendly review and Acuity Scheduling review), a checkout and usually an e-signature tool, and ActiveCampaign listens to them. Starter has none of these integrations by name, although it does include Zapier, an API and webhooks.

Deal pipelines are the other surprise. Starter has no CRM pipelines, and on Plus, Pro and Enterprise they come through a paid Enhanced CRM add-on, priced in the section below. A contact record with tags and scores is included, but a board tracking discovery calls is not. If that is what you were after, read how to manage coaching pipelines without ActiveCampaign.

Delivery: not part of the product

There is no way to deliver a coaching program inside ActiveCampaign. You can send a sequence of emails that resembles a course, but the documented product has no course hosting, no lesson tracking and no record of whether a client did the week's work. You would add a course host or a coaching platform.

Client experience: email is the only surface

Your client never logs in to anything. They receive emails, and with paid extras they could receive SMS or WhatsApp messages, which ActiveCampaign sells separately. There is no client portal, app, community, habit tracker or check-in. For a coach whose results depend on what clients do between sessions, this is the largest gap.

Admin: light, with a data export limit worth knowing

Admin features are mostly about the marketing team: custom user permissions on Plus, three seats on Pro and five on Enterprise. There are no coaching agreements, invoices or session records.

Contacts export to CSV, covering all contacts, single contacts, search results and lists by status, and the download link stays valid for 7 days. The CSV includes standard and custom fields, lead and deal scores, and tags in a single column. Contact notes cannot be exported, according to the help center. If you keep client notes on contact records, that is a good reason to keep them somewhere else, or to plan a manual copy before you ever leave.

How much does ActiveCampaign cost?

ActiveCampaign starts at $15 per month billed yearly for 1,000 contacts, and the price rises with your contact count and plan, as listed in October 2026. There is no free plan. There is a 14-day trial with email sign-up and no credit card, and paid plans carry a 30-day refund guarantee.

The rendered page prints only the yearly-billing prices. The monthly-billing prices come from the page's own pricing catalog, whose yearly totals divide exactly into the printed figures. All figures here are in US dollars.

PlanPrice at 1,000 contactsLimitsWhat it adds
CoachfulLite: $29/month for up to 5 clientsFlat monthly plans; lower plans cap clients. Unlimited clients: Pro: $99/month with unlimited clientsBooking, payments, contracts, programs, courses, community, website, funnels, email and AI assistant in one membership
ActiveCampaign Starter$19 monthly, or $15 per month billed yearly ($180)10,000 sends per month; 1 seat included; 5 actions per automation; no landing pagesEmail automation, recipes, templates, Zapier and API
ActiveCampaign Plus$59 monthly, or $49 per month billed yearly ($588)10,000 sends per month; 1 seat included; unlimited automation actionsLanding pages, site messages, scheduling, payment and ads integrations, sales automation
ActiveCampaign Pro$99 monthly, or $79 per month billed yearly ($948)12,000 sends per month; 3 seats includedPredictive sending, conditional content, advanced segmentation, attribution, priority support

ActiveCampaign pricing page showing its Starter, Plus, Pro and Enterprise plans
ActiveCampaign's pricing page in October 2026.

What happens to the price as your list grows?

Contact growth moves you into the next pricing band. At 2,500 contacts, the listed prices climb as shown below, so a coach on Plus goes from $588 to $1,140 a year when billed yearly.

Plan1,000 contacts, billed yearly2,500 contacts, billed yearly2,500 contacts, billed monthly
Starter$15 per month$39 per month$49 per month
Plus$49 per month$95 per month$119 per month
Pro$79 per month$149 per month$189 per month
Enterprise$145 per month$255 per month$319 per month

Which add-ons could you end up paying for?

The FAQ on the pricing page says there are no setup costs or hidden fees. Add-ons are still a real line item, and the page only labels them as available, so the figures below come from the pricing catalog and are worth checking at sign-up.

  • Enhanced CRM, Pipelines: base of $49, $85 or $119 per month on Plus, Pro or Enterprise with monthly billing, plus $19, $29 or $49 per seat per month.
  • Enhanced CRM, Pipelines and Sales Engagement: base of $85, $139 or $199 per month, plus $39, $59 or $79 per seat per month.
  • Custom reporting: $159 per month or $1,908 per year on Plus and Pro; included on Enterprise.
  • Extra seats: one extra Starter seat is $10 per month, and Starter is capped at 2 seats.
  • SMS, WhatsApp messaging and transactional email: sold separately. We did not find a price for these on the pricing page, so check before you plan around them.
  • Extra AI credits: available beyond the 500 included on every plan. We did not find a published price for these either.

An illustrative example: a solo coach with 1,000 contacts who wants landing pages and a deal board needs Plus at $59 plus the Pipelines base of $49 and one seat at $19. That is $127 per month with monthly billing, before any scheduler, checkout, contract tool or course host. The catalog prices we saw are for this contact band, so confirm the add-on price if your list is larger.

What do public reviewers praise and complain about?

Reviewers tend to like the automation and dislike the billing and support experience. ActiveCampaign's Trustpilot heading showed 2.7 from 1,452 reviews on 28 October 2026, with the star image on the same page reading 2.5. The themes below come from the public Trustpilot reviews and summaries we could read in October 2026, which is a sample and not a full count. We paraphrase rather than quote.

What reviewers praise

  • Automation: reviewers who like the product usually single out its automation, describing it as working well for what they needed.
  • Helpful individual support: some reviewers describe support staff as personal and say they came away with clear answers. Support appears on both sides of the ledger.

What reviewers complain about

  • Charges after cancelling: one reviewer reported cancelling in August 2025 and asking for a refund, then still being charged in September.
  • Downgrades: another described a poor support experience when trying to move to a lower plan.
  • Price and complexity: a third-party summary of Trustpilot feedback groups complaints around price increases, billing problems, support and a complicated interface.
  • Account suspensions: the same kind of third-party summary includes reviewers saying their accounts were suspended without warning. ActiveCampaign's help center does document account reviews and suspensions, with triggers that include billing issues and abnormal account behaviour.

Two cautions on reading this. Public review pages tend to attract people with strong feelings, and a software company's unhappy customers are often more motivated to post than its satisfied ones. A score this far below 3 still deserves attention, especially when the repeated theme is billing. The practical response is to record your cancellation confirmation, note your renewal date, and start on the trial before committing to a yearly plan. You can also compare against our other reviews of coaching tools.

What are the pros and cons of ActiveCampaign for coaches?

The pros are about marketing depth and the cons are about everything outside marketing.

Who is ActiveCampaign best for?

ActiveCampaign fits coaches whose biggest job is marketing to a segmented audience, and who keep the rest of the business in other tools.

  • Established coaches with a large list and several offers: if different people need different sequences based on what they clicked or bought, the automation depth earns its keep.
  • Coaching companies with a sales function: Pipelines and Sales Engagement, multi-seat plans and the Salesforce integration on Enterprise suit a team working a deal board. Coachful has no multi-stage sales deal board for large teams and no Salesforce or HubSpot integration.
  • Organisations that need HIPAA support on their email: Enterprise lists it. Coachful is not HIPAA-certified, so if that is a requirement, you should look at tools that are.
  • Coaches happy with their current stack: if your delivery works well elsewhere and email is the weak link, adding ActiveCampaign is a clean fix.

It is a harder fit for a new coach. Coaches just starting out usually need one place to book a first client, take payment and deliver the work, and a recipe library does not help with any of that. Coaches who deliver programs will also feel the gap, because the part of the job that keeps clients enrolled sits outside the tool entirely. Our guide on managing client emails without ActiveCampaign covers this from the email side.

Which one looks like you?

Coachful builds your coaching website from a few answers, in a design chosen for your niche, with programs, booking and payments ready behind it.

Build your platform

Where do coaches outgrow ActiveCampaign?

The limit is usually not the email features. It is the setup around them, as more of the week goes on connecting tools and less on clients.

Picture the typical path. A lead fills in a form in ActiveCampaign, books through a scheduler, signs in an e-signature tool, pays through Stripe and receives lessons in a course host, while check-ins happen by email or in a spreadsheet. Each step can be connected, and Plus or Zapier makes that possible. But you now have four to six logins, several bills, and no single record that tells you a client has gone quiet in week three.

That last point is the one automation cannot fix on its own. An email tool knows who opened a message. It does not know whether the client did the program's work, how their habits are going or how they said they felt this morning. That is the point where a coach usually starts looking at a coaching platform instead of another integration.

What are the best alternatives to ActiveCampaign for coaches?

Coachful comes first for coaches who deliver programs, and the email-focused tools below suit those who only want cheaper or simpler email. For a longer list, see our ranking of ActiveCampaign alternatives for coaches and our comparison pages.

Coachful: the whole client journey in one place

Coachful is a coaching platform for coaches who deliver programs rather than only sessions, including solo coaches growing into a small team and coaches replacing 4 to 6 tools. One subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant. The coach has one login and the client has one branded app.

On email specifically, Coachful has lists, broadcasts and multi-step sequences with triggers, delays, branching and A/B splits, included in your Coachful membership. It is not trying to match ActiveCampaign's segmentation depth, and predictive sending is not among its features. What it offers instead is that the sequence sits next to the booking page, the checkout and the client record.

This short walkthrough shows how email works inside the platform:

On the marketing side there is a section-based website builder with 30 designed homepage templates, booking, application, lead-magnet and checkout funnels, and a link-in-bio page. There is also a social planner, and Instagram automations that can send a booking link by DM when someone comments a keyword.

For selling, booking pages include availability rules, buffers, time-zone detection, two-way calendar sync and built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links. Payments run through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account, with one-time payments, subscriptions, payment plans and coupons, at a 0% Coachful platform fee, so you pay only Stripe or Razorpay processing. Coaching agreements with e-signature go out before the first call and stay on the client record.

The real difference is what happens after the sale. Clients get multi-week programs with weekly goals, daily tasks, habits, morning and evening check-ins, goals with progress bars and streaks. Courses, downloads and group calls and cohort communities all land in the client's branded home. On your side, the client record holds goals, check-ins, notes, intake answers, tags, payments and sessions, with a status of thriving, active, quiet or at risk, so the client who has gone quiet in week three is visible.

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, choose We'll build it for you and describe what you want: a website, funnel, program, course outline, email sequence and more. You can attach up to 8 reference links and up to 10 files. The Coachful team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours, on every plan. Nothing gets invented, so no fake credentials, testimonials or prices, and any gaps are left for you to fill. It does not include recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing. In one recent build, a leadership coach with a Squarespace renewal days away got one clean homepage with a repeated "talk with me" button. Read more about the white-glove service.

Coachful Create page showing the white-glove build option

What Coachful does not do. It is not HIPAA-certified, offers no BAA, and is not for clinical record-keeping or insurance billing. There is no PayPal and no permanent free plan. The client app ships under the Coachful listing with your branding, not your own App Store account. There is no multi-stage sales deal board for large teams, no Salesforce or HubSpot integration, and no routing forms that pick a host from form answers. It also is not a general website builder for non-coaching sites.

How to start. Begin with a free trial, then ask the team to build your first website or program through the white-glove service. Clients, programs and content are imported for you during onboarding, and monthly plans cancel in one click. Current plans: Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients. Coachful holds a Trustpilot score of 4.5 from 21 reviews as of October 2026, which is a much smaller sample than ActiveCampaign's.

MailerLite: cheaper email with bookings included

MailerLite homepage on desktop
MailerLite's homepage in October 2026.

MailerLite is the closest like-for-like swap if you want email automation at a lower price. As listed in October 2026, at 1,000 subscribers Comfort costs $19 per month, or $17.10 billed yearly, and Power costs $39, or $35.10 billed yearly. It also includes built-in bookings for one-to-one and group sessions, and digital products with 0% MailerLite commission. It has no client delivery layer. Pick it over Coachful if you only need email plus simple bookings and want the smallest bill. See MailerLite vs ActiveCampaign.

Kit: for coaches whose business is the newsletter

Kit, formerly ConvertKit, has a free Newsletter plan for up to 10,000 subscribers, with Creator from $39 per month and Pro from $79 per month at up to 1,000 subscribers, as listed in October 2026. Automations and sequences need a paid plan. It has no scheduling, client records or client portal. Pick it over Coachful if your audience and income are built around a newsletter and digital products. See ActiveCampaign vs ConvertKit.

Flodesk: for coaches who care most about how emails look

Flodesk starts at $25 per month, or $19 billed yearly, on Lite for up to 1,000 subscribers, as listed in October 2026. Its free plan cannot send email, and it has simple checkout and sales pages but no scheduling, client records or courses portal. Pick it over Coachful if beautiful emails to a modest list are the whole brief. See ActiveCampaign vs Flodesk.

Systeme.io: a budget marketing suite

Systeme.io homepage on desktop
Systeme.io's homepage in October 2026.

Systeme.io has a free plan with 2,000 contacts, three funnels and one course, then Startup at $17, Webinar at $47 and Unlimited at $97 per month, with 0% transaction fees, as listed in October 2026. Our profile from September 2026 shows no native one-to-one scheduling with client records, no habits or check-ins, and no branded mobile app. Pick it over Coachful if lowest cost for funnels, courses and email matters more than client delivery. See Systeme.io vs ActiveCampaign and our Systeme.io review.

Mailchimp: only for very small lists

Mailchimp homepage on desktop
Mailchimp's homepage in October 2026.

Mailchimp's free plan covers 250 contacts and 500 sends a month with no automation flows. Essentials starts at $13 per month for up to 500 contacts and allows only 4 steps per flow, and Standard starts at $20, as listed in October 2026. Pick it over Coachful if you only send an occasional newsletter to a very small list and want the familiar name.

Kajabi: when courses are the business

Kajabi homepage on desktop
Kajabi's homepage in October 2026.

Kajabi is a course, community, website, funnel and email platform with Basic at $179 per month, or $143 billed yearly, capped at 2,500 contacts and 5 products, as listed in October 2026. It has no habit tracking or daily client check-ins, and coaching runs through products and communities rather than per-client plans. Pick it over Coachful if selling courses at volume is your main model and client-level coaching is secondary. See ActiveCampaign vs Kajabi and our course platform page for coaches.

Should you use ActiveCampaign for your coaching business?

Use it if email marketing is the thing you need to be excellent at and the rest of your stack already works. It is a capable automation tool with fair trial terms and a clear plan ladder, though Plus is the realistic starting point and pipelines cost extra. The Trustpilot score is low enough that you should watch your billing dates closely.

Skip it if you were hoping it would run your practice. It will not book, charge, contract or deliver, and the more of those jobs you bolt on, the more the true cost differs from the price on the page. A useful test: list every tool you would need beside ActiveCampaign, add up their monthly bills, and count the logins your clients would need. If that list makes you tired, you want a single platform rather than a better email tool.

For coaches who deliver programs, our recommendation is Coachful, because it keeps the sequence, the sale and the between-session work in one place, and the team can build your first setup for you. If you really do need deep segmentation, predictive sending or a Salesforce connection, ActiveCampaign is the stronger product for that job, and we would tell you so. See the plans page, or the page for established coaches if you are moving an existing practice.

ActiveCampaign review FAQ

Is ActiveCampaign worth it for coaches?

It is worth it for coaches with a large list and several offers who need detailed segmentation and already have booking, payments and delivery elsewhere. For a coach who needs all of those, it covers only the marketing part, so the total cost and effort are higher than the plan price suggests.

How much does ActiveCampaign cost per month?

As listed in October 2026, at 1,000 contacts Starter is $19 billed monthly or $15 billed yearly, Plus is $59 or $49, Pro is $99 or $79, and Enterprise is $179 or $145. Prices rise with contacts, and add-ons such as deal pipelines cost extra. There is no free plan.

Does ActiveCampaign have a free trial?

Yes. It lists a 14-day free trial with email sign-up and no credit card needed. Paid plans also carry a 30-day guarantee of a full refund if you are not satisfied.

What is ActiveCampaign's Trustpilot rating?

The Trustpilot heading showed 2.7 from 1,452 reviews on 28 October 2026, while the star image on the same page described it as 2.5. Complaints we read centered on billing, cancellation and support, while praise centered on automation and some individual support staff.

Does ActiveCampaign have booking or a calendar?

No, it has no built-in booking calendar. Plus and above integrate with Calendly, Acuity Scheduling and Eventbrite, so booking data can trigger automations, but the scheduler itself is a separate product and bill.

Can ActiveCampaign take payments or send invoices?

No. It has no built-in checkout or invoicing, and it does not process payments. PayPal and Stripe integrations on Plus and above feed purchase data into automations, and those processors charge their own fees.

Is ActiveCampaign HIPAA compliant for health coaches?

ActiveCampaign lists HIPAA support on its Enterprise plan only, which starts at $145 per month billed yearly for 1,000 contacts as listed in October 2026. Confirm the exact terms with the company before storing health information. Coaching is not medical care, and clinical records belong in a clinical system.

Can I export my data from ActiveCampaign if I leave?

You can export contacts to CSV, including standard and custom fields, scores and tags, and the download link stays valid for 7 days. Contact notes cannot be exported, according to its help center, so copy anything important before you cancel.

What is Coachful's free white-glove service?

It is a build service included on every plan. You describe what you want, such as a website, funnel, program or email sequence, attach references, and the Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. It does not include video recording, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing.

Can Coachful replace ActiveCampaign?

For most coaches who deliver programs, yes: Coachful has email lists, broadcasts and sequences with triggers, delays, branching and A/B splits, alongside booking, payments, contracts and delivery. It will not replace ActiveCampaign if you rely on predictive sending, HIPAA support, a sales deal board for a large team or a Salesforce integration.
