Can Anyone Be a Life Coach? What It Takes to Earn a Living

Can Anyone Be a Life Coach? What It Takes to Earn a Living

Can anyone be a life coach? Legally, in most places, yes: there is no required training, occupational licensing or regulatory oversight for life coaching, and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' Career Outlook profile describes a field with no formal requirements. What the law allows and what clients will pay for are different things, though. A good coach has a specific client, a clear outcome, real listening skill and the discipline to stay out of therapy, medicine and legal advice.

If you have already decided to coach, the rest of this guide is about making it a business. In short: pick one client and one outcome, turn that into two or three packages, price from your income target, set up the legal basics, run everything from one platform, sign your first 10 clients from your own network and from conversations, and keep them with programs that work between sessions. We make Coachful, one of the platforms covered here, and we say where it does not fit.

What are the steps at a glance?

Eight steps take you from idea to a working practice, and most can be done in parallel within 90 days. The times and costs below are examples for a solo coach in the US, not quotes.

1. Choose one client and one outcome1 week$0
2. Check your scope and decide on credentials1 week, longer if you train$0 to several thousand dollars

Is life coaching a viable business?

Yes, but it is the easiest coaching niche to enter and one of the hardest to monetize, because "life" is not an outcome anyone can budget for. The same Wikipedia summary reports that most US life coaches find relatively low demand for their services, and that critics see selling training to would-be coaches as the most profitable corner of the field. Go in with those facts in view.

Coachful's 2026 Coaching Business Report compiles public pay data and practitioner reports, and rates this niche as extremely saturated with a low barrier to entry. The figures below come from that report, with the source named for each so you can judge it:

  • Annual earnings: $47,000 to $72,000 from PayScale, ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor data.
  • Hourly rates: $75 to $200, from PayScale plus community estimates.
  • By career stage (estimates, not measured): $50 to $100 an hour at entry level, $100 to $200 when experienced, $200 to $500 at the elite end.
  • Published session rates: $50 to $980 in a small sample of 18 rates collected directly, with most between $100 and $250. Treat this as a picture of the spread, not of the whole market.

Who actually pays for life coaching?

People pay when they have a named problem, a deadline and the money to solve it. Someone leaving a marriage, changing careers at 45, returning to work after caring for a parent, or managing ADHD at a new job can say what they want to change, and that makes the sale easier. "I help people live their best life" gives them nothing to buy. Narrow versions of the niche have clearer buyers, such as career, divorce, confidence and ADHD coaching. Our guides to starting a life purpose or teen life coaching business show how a narrower focus changes the offer.

What makes someone good at it?

Skill shows in behavior: listening without steering, asking questions that change how a client thinks, holding people to their own commitments and noticing when something is outside your scope. A systematic review cited on Wikipedia found effective business coaches were known for integrity, support for the people they coach, communication skills and credibility. That finding is about business coaching, but it is a useful test for life coaches too. Practice on real people before you sell, and record sessions with consent so you can review your own work. Our coaching questions tool and wheel of life give you material for those first conversations.

Do you need a certificate?

Not legally, but some buyers care. Credentials from the International Coaching Federation are voluntary professional standards, not licenses, and they matter most when selling to employers and other organizations. The ICF sets its own experience requirements for each level. For the full breakdown, read life coach qualifications, do you need a license, what training costs and what is really free. If you are starting from zero on the skills, how to become a life coach covers that path, so we will not repeat it here. Coaches outside the US should look for local guidance, such as our Canada certification guide.

The coach development panel tracks demo hours and clients against ICF credential levels.

Where is the line you must not cross?

Coaching is not treatment. Life coaches work on goals and follow-through with people who are well enough to do that work; they do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions, give medical advice, recommend investments or give legal advice. Refer a client to a licensed professional if they describe thoughts of self-harm, trauma symptoms, disordered eating, substance dependence or a condition they want treated, and write that referral rule into your agreement. In the US, someone in immediate crisis can call or text 988. Our articles on coaching and anxiety and therapists who coach go deeper on where that border sits.

How do you define your client and offer?

Write one sentence: "I help [specific person] get [measurable outcome] in [time frame]." For example, "I help mid-career professionals who feel stuck choose and start a new direction in 90 days." Your offer is then the shortest route to that result, sold as a package with a beginning and an end instead of a single hour.

Three example structures work well together, and you should launch with no more than three. The ranges come from package data in our 2026 report, which mixes community reports and a small verified sample, so treat them as estimates.

Example packageWhat it includesWho it suitsEstimated market range
4-week starter4 x 60-minute sessions, email supportOne clear decision or a first step$400 to $600
3-month program8 x 60-minute sessions, email, worksheetsYour core offer: one real change$1,200 to $2,500
Monthly groupGroup calls and a communityPast clients and people not ready for 1:1$100 to $300 a month

Other formats exist, such as a 6-month deep dive at an estimated $2,500 to $5,000 or a VIP day at $750 to $2,000. Add them once the core program is selling. Sell the 3-month program first, because it gives you enough time to see results, and those results become your best marketing.

How should you price your coaching?

Start from your income target, then work back to the number of clients and hours you can realistically deliver. A market range tells you what buyers will accept; your math tells you whether it pays. The table is illustrative only: it assumes 8 sessions per 1:1 client and 1.5 hours of delivery time for each session or group call, counting preparation and notes.

Illustrative scenarioClients per yearPrice eachGross revenueDelivery hoursRevenue per delivery hour
Part-time start8$1,500$12,00096$125
Full-time, year one20$2,000$40,000240$167
Established 1:130$2,400$72,000360$200
Group add-on (12 members, 48 calls a year)12 seats, full all year$150 a month$21,60072$300

Revenue is not take-home pay. Using the $40,000 example, card processing at an example 3% costs $1,200, and software, insurance and other costs at an example $2,400 leave $36,400 in profit. Self-employment tax at the IRS rate of 15.3% takes up to about $5,570 of that before income tax, leaving roughly $30,800. Marketing, admin and sales calls also take unpaid hours that do not appear in the table, so do not plan your income around 40 billable hours a week. If you are building alongside a job, our guide to part-time life coaching covers that route.

Three pricing rules help. Publish a package price and do not sell single sessions to new clients. Offer a payment plan on anything over about $1,000. Raise prices for new clients once your calendar is about 70% full, instead of waiting for it to feel comfortable.

What legal setup do you actually need?

You need a business structure, a tax plan, the right insurance, a signed agreement with each client and honest marketing. None of it is complicated, but rules vary by state and country, so check with an accountant or attorney before you rely on the summary below. It covers the US.

Entity and tax

  • Sole proprietorship: the SBA says this is automatic if you do business without registering another structure and calls it a good choice for low-risk businesses and for testing an idea. You can be held personally liable for business debts.
  • LLC: protects owners from personal liability "in most instances." Members are still considered self-employed and pay self-employment tax. An LLC can also elect S corp taxation; ask an accountant whether that is worth it at your income.
  • EIN: the IRS issues one online in minutes and you never pay a fee for it. Ignore sites that charge for this. If you are forming an LLC, form it with the state first.
  • Self-employment tax: due if your net self-employment earnings are $400 or more. For 2026, the Social Security part applies up to $184,500 of earned income.
  • Estimated taxes: generally required if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file. The final 2026 payment is due January 15, 2027. Moving a share of every client payment into a separate tax account makes these dates much easier.
  • Licenses and permits: the SBA says requirements depend on your activity and location, so check your Secretary of State and local government sites even though coaching itself has no license.

Insurance

Professional liability insurance is the policy that matters most. The SBA describes it as protection against financial loss from malpractice, errors and negligence for businesses that provide services. An LLC can protect personal property from lawsuits, but the SBA adds that "that protection has limits." If you hire employees, workers' compensation, unemployment and disability insurance become required, and some states require more.

Agreements and data

Have every client sign before the first call. Your agreement should cover what coaching is and is not, the referral rule, confidentiality and its limits, fees, refunds, cancellation terms and the fact that results are not guaranteed. Start with our life coach contract template and intake form, then have a local lawyer review them. Keep client notes in a system with access controls, not a shared drive, and do not hold clinical records in a coaching tool. Coachful is GDPR-ready but not HIPAA-certified and offers no BAA, so clinical records belong in a clinical system.

Marketing claims

The FTC watches coaching closely, and you should write your website as if a regulator will read it.

  • Income promises: in 2021 the FTC warned more than 1,100 businesses, including investment and business coaching firms, about false or misleading earnings claims. Its consumer guidance says that promises of guaranteed income, large returns or a "proven system" are likely a scam. Do not promise outcomes.
  • Testimonials: endorsements must be honest, and a connection such as free coaching in exchange for feedback must be disclosed. Exceptional results need proof that they are typical, or the ad must make the usual results clear. The Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule bans fake reviews and testimonials.
  • Email: CAN-SPAM requires a physical postal address and a clear opt-out in commercial email, and opt-outs must be honored within 10 business days.

What tech stack does a life coach need?

You need booking, payments, contracts, client records, a way to deliver your program between sessions, a website and email. You can buy each one separately or use one platform, and we recommend one platform as the home for all of it, because a client should not need five logins to work with you. Prices below are as listed in October 2026, on annual billing where the vendor shows it.

That example stack comes to about $168 a month before transaction fees, and none of its parts run per-client habits and daily check-ins. If your offer is only 1:1 sessions and you never plan to run programs, a simpler admin tool can be enough; Paperbell lists one plan at $97/mo and CoachVantage starts at $35/mo on annual billing, as listed in October 2026.

What Coachful is, who it is for and how to start

Coachful is a coaching platform: one subscription covers booking, payments, contracts, program delivery with habits and check-ins, courses, a community, a website with funnels and email, and an AI assistant, with one login for you and one branded app for your clients. It is built for coaches who deliver programs and not just sessions, for solo coaches growing into a small team, and for coaches replacing 4 to 6 tools. See how it fits at Coachful for life coaches and new coaches. Pricing is flat monthly plans, with lower plans capping the number of clients (current plans: Lite: $29/month for up to 5 clients; Solo: $49/month for up to 20 clients; Pro: $99/month with unlimited clients; Studio: $199/month with unlimited clients). To start, take a free trial and ask the team to build your setup with the white-glove service.

Why Coachful stands out: a free white-glove service. From Create, under "We'll build it for you," you describe what you want: a website, funnel, program, course outline, form, email sequence or link in bio. You can attach up to 8 reference links and 10 files. The team builds it inside your own account, usually within about 24 hours, and it is free on every plan. Nothing gets invented, so no fake credentials, testimonials or prices appear, and gaps are left for you to fill. A menopause and midlife health coach starting from nothing got a five-page site in sage and cream with every button leading to a free 20-minute consultation; a leadership coach with a Squarespace renewal days away got one clean homepage with a repeated "talk with me" button. It does not include recording videos, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing. Read more about the white-glove service.

What Coachful does not do: it is not HIPAA-certified and not for clinical record-keeping or insurance billing. There is no PayPal and no permanent free plan. The client app ships under the Coachful listing with your branding, not under your own App Store account. It is not a general website builder for non-coaching sites, and there are no third-party plugins. If any of those is a deal-breaker, choose another tool.

How do you set up your website, booking and payments?

Build the smallest version that lets a stranger understand your offer, book a call and pay. One page with a clear promise, your story, your process, one or two honest testimonials and one repeated button is enough to launch.

Website

Say who you help in the first line, and make every button lead to the same next step, usually a free consultation. Our website examples and template guide break down what to put in each section, and our bio examples help with the About page. Coachful's website builder is section-based, with a blog, custom domain, SEO settings, 30 designed homepage templates and an option to import an existing site.

Booking

Set availability rules so your calendar reflects the business you want, including buffers, minimum notice and days off. Ask two or three intake questions at booking so you can skip weak-fit calls. Coachful's booking pages handle availability rules, buffers, minimum notice and time-zone detection, with two-way Google, Apple/iCloud and Outlook calendar sync. Sessions run on built-in video or auto-created Zoom, Meet or Teams links, with email reminders plus SMS and WhatsApp reminders once messaging is enabled.

Payments

Take payment and signature before the first session, so nobody starts a program unpaid or without an agreement. In Coachful, payments run through your own Stripe Connect or Razorpay account and cover one-time charges, subscriptions, payment plans, coupons, refunds, Apple Pay and Google Pay. There is a 0% Coachful platform fee, so you pay only Stripe or Razorpay processing. Agreements with e-signature go out before the first call and are stored on the client record.

How do you get your first 10 life coaching clients?

Through direct conversations, not content. Your first clients will come from people who know you or know someone who knows you, so aim for 30 honest conversations before you judge whether the offer works.

  1. Founding clients (clients 1 to 3). Offer a small group of people a reduced rate in exchange for honest feedback and, if they are happy, an honest testimonial that discloses the discount.
  2. Your own network (clients 4 to 6). Message 50 people one at a time, and ask for introductions instead of asking them to buy.
  3. Referral partners. Therapists, HR managers, divorce attorneys, career counselors and clergy meet your future clients first. Tell them who you help and who you refer out.
  4. Where your client already gathers. Run a free one-hour workshop for a parents' group, alumni association, professional network or library, then invite attendees to a consultation.
  5. Social with a keyword. Post about one problem your client has and ask people to comment a keyword. With Coachful's lead records and Instagram automations, a comment can trigger a DM with your booking link, and that person lands in your lead records.
  6. LinkedIn for career and midlife clients. Comment on people's career-change posts with something useful, then message only when there is a real reason to talk.

Here is a message you can adapt. It works because it asks for a referral, not a purchase:

Hi Sam, I've started coaching mid-career professionals who feel stuck and want to choose a new direction within 90 days. I'm taking on three founding clients this quarter at a reduced rate. Do you know anyone in that spot? No pressure at all, I just wanted you to know what I'm doing now.

And a structure for a 30-minute consultation: ask what is going on and how long it has been a problem, what they have tried, what would be different in 90 days, and what happens if nothing changes. Then, only if it fits, say this:

Based on what you've told me, I think the 3-month program is the right fit. It's 8 sessions with weekly check-ins, and the price is [price], or three monthly payments of [amount]. Would you like to start, or is there a question I can answer first?

If someone needs therapy instead of coaching, say so and refer them, even when you need the client.

The Prospects page lists demo leads with the form or resource they came from and their stage.

How do you deliver results and keep clients?

Most of a client's change happens between sessions, so design for that time, not just the hour you spend together. Retention follows from visible progress: a client who can see what has changed is far easier to renew.

  • Programs: turn your method into a multi-week path with weekly goals and daily tasks, so each client knows what to do next. Coachful has more than 40 program templates to start from, and Michelle, the built-in AI assistant, can build a program for you. Confirmed builds use AI credits.
  • Habits and goals: give each client one to three habits, not ten. Streaks and goals with progress bars make progress visible.
  • Check-ins: morning and evening check-ins surface a bad week before the next session, and each client's status (thriving, active, quiet or at risk) tells you who to contact first.
  • Community: once you have enough clients, add a group. Cohort groups can be created automatically on program enrollment, which suits the monthly group offer for past clients.
  • Renewals: at week 10 of a 12-week program, review results against the goals in the intake form and propose a specific next phase, or end warmly and ask for a referral.

AI can help with preparation and between-session support, but it does not replace the relationship people pay for. Our article on ChatGPT as a life coach explains what it can and cannot do. If you are working toward an ICF credential, Coachful's credential tracking counts hours and distinct clients and exports a client coaching log with paid and pro bono hours.

What does a 30/60/90-day launch look like?

The first 30 days set up the business, the next 30 test the offer with real people, and the last 30 build a repeatable way to find clients. The targets below are example goals for someone working on this most days. Your results will depend on your network and niche.

How much does it cost to start?

A lean start can run to a few hundred dollars plus your platform subscription; a comfortable one, with accredited training, runs to several thousand. All amounts other than the EIN are example budgets, not quotes, so check real prices where you live. Training is the swing factor, and our cost guide breaks it down.

Be careful with one cost in particular: programs that promise a client flow or a six-figure income in exchange for a large fee. The FTC warns about online business coaching schemes that claim big money with little or no experience. No certificate or coaching course can guarantee you clients.

What mistakes should new life coaches avoid?

The most common mistakes come from staying general and working on everything except selling. Watch for these:

  • Coaching "everyone." A broad promise gives nobody a reason to choose you, however good you are in the room.
  • Buying credentials before you have clients. Talk to prospects first and find out whether they ask for a certificate. Train if the people you want to serve expect it.
  • Spending weeks on a logo and a perfect site. One page and a booking link are enough to test whether people want your offer.
  • Selling single sessions. Hourly work limits what you can achieve with a client and keeps your income unpredictable.
  • Drifting into therapy. Without a written referral rule, a hard conversation can pull you outside your scope.
  • Making income or transformation promises. They create legal risk under FTC rules and attract the wrong clients.
  • Skipping the tax plan. If you spend every client payment, the first tax bill has nothing to come from.
  • Stitching together too many tools. Each new login is another place for a client to get lost and another bill for you.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone legally call themselves a life coach?

In most places, yes. The title is not protected, and people without formal training can legally use it. The restrictions apply to the regulated work nearby: you cannot diagnose or treat mental health conditions, practice medicine or give legal advice without the required license. Avoid claiming a credential you do not hold.

Do I need a certification to be a life coach?

No, certification is voluntary. It can build your skills and can matter to employers and other organizational buyers, while an individual client may care more about whether you understand their problem. Our guide to life coach qualifications covers when it is worth paying for.

Can I be a life coach with no experience?

You can start, but you should get practice first. Coach a few people at a reduced rate or pro bono, get feedback, and be honest about your experience when you do. Disclose that a client received free or discounted coaching if you use their testimonial.

Who should not become a life coach?

Coaching is a poor fit if you mostly want to give advice, need steady income immediately or are drawn to it because you want to fix people. It also suits you poorly if you dislike selling, since finding clients is a large part of running the business.

How much can a life coach make?

Public pay data compiled in our 2026 report puts life coaches at $47,000 to $72,000 a year, while solo income varies far more than that range suggests. Your earnings depend on your niche, your price and how many clients you sign. Be skeptical of anyone who promises a specific income.

Do I need an LLC to start life coaching?

No. In the US, you are automatically a sole proprietor if you do business without registering another structure, and the SBA calls that a good choice for testing an idea. You can form an LLC later for liability protection, which has limits. Ask an accountant or attorney what fits your situation.

Do life coaches need insurance?

We think it is worth having, even when your state does not require it for a solo coach without employees. Professional liability insurance protects against financial loss from errors and negligence claims. Compare a few policies and check that coaching is named in the coverage.

How long does it take to get 10 clients?

There is no reliable average, and it depends heavily on your network and niche. Plan for at least 90 days of steady outreach, with many conversations, and treat a slow start as information about your offer. The 30/60/90-day plan above sets out the work for that time.

What is Coachful's white-glove service?

It is a free build service available on every plan. You describe what you want, such as a website, funnel, program or email sequence, attach references, and the Coachful team builds it inside your account, usually within about 24 hours. It will not invent credentials, testimonials or prices, and it does not cover video recording, logo design, ad management or ongoing marketing.

Which software should a new life coach start with?

Choose one platform that covers booking, payments, agreements and delivery, so you do not have to rebuild later. We recommend Coachful for coaches who plan to run programs, with the white-glove service handling the first build. See Coachful for new coaches for what is included in your Coachful membership.
